    I have an LG G4 and its amazing. Since i didnt get the G4 only for its camera (because I dont take many pictures) I mainly got the G4 for its performance and software. The only problem I have with the G4 is that it can over heat too quickly and then I'd have to charge it again. But overall its a great flagship phone.

    I have had the lg g4 for about 2 weeks now. I really like it. Im not a photography expert by any means so I am still trying to learn how to use the camera in manual mode. Auto mode is pretty good by itself but a lot of photography people in the know are very impressed by the camera's manual features. I hope to learn more about it to be able to use the manual features in the correct settings. I'm still a noob when it comes to ISO, shutter speed, etc. Nice video!

    I really enjoyed the video and it was a nice touch that your friend came along and helped you. He was kind and he is also a professional photographer which is a great addition. I was hoping you do more comparisons, like closeups or long exposures and night photos and show it us one picture at time, at the end of the video probably after the discussion.
    Also, something else I would like to point out is that at 7:13 I agree with you. I understand what you say. You were right actually, but what can you do. At least, one should not take advantage of this and show up on a wedding with a "crappy" camera that looks like a DSLR just to make higher profits because of the reduced cost one has with not spneding much in equipment. Or in the other way around, one must not take a really high end phone and shoot a video in a private area, so he could make money out of his project without paying loyalties, just because his high end equipment was disguised as low-end. Aside from perception there's also the ethics.

    Very impressive that a tiny camera does almost as good as a Dslr camera (I personally thought it outperformed the dslr)
    And phone cameras are always getting better every year. Won't be soon till Lg cameras are just as good.

      alex santana Yeah I thought the Canon dumbed down real sunlight and the G4 didn't. Makes you wonder if that $2,000 lense was really all that great. Wonder if he used a Nikon DSLR instead. I have a 5100 and I always use it to take photos, but the cost of Nikon lenses make you pay for their name. This G4 would be awesome. I think it has a Digital Zoom mode too, but I have not seen anyone showing off that feature of the phone.

    Not bad for just point and click. For us non professionals that just want to have good quality photos to capture those precious moments...this is perfect! It's was great to see those photo comparisons to see how close they were...but with the critical eye of Rommel I wouldn't have even seen those subtle differences! Btw....we have purchased some of Rommel ' s work at Motolyric...the photos he took of our race cars were amazing...and we have the prints up for display at our shop!

    I was VERY impressed at first. (waiting for my G4 to arrive at the moment.) Then i switched the video to 4K (Thanks for offering this!) and watched it in Fullscreen on my 4K Screen. Not there was quite some difference noticable. While the LG G4 is still super impressive for a smartphone, I think you should have mentioned the sensor grain and especially the artefacts (especially in the grass, the fence, the asphalt). What is the point in a 100% Crop if most people are watchng the video in 480p on their 1080p screen? I think you are giving a false impression about the quality.

    Have to say I love the conclusion... You make a very valid point. I was given a LG G4 to try before my wedding by LG but didnt get much chance to take any pictures on it. I did however do a lot of preparation photos and our professional photographer we had on the day was impressed by the camera when I showed him the ideas I had taken. Its valid that as cameras on phones get better, will they be banned from places where "professional" cameras are banned.

  • @YaronRosen
    @YaronRosen 9 лет назад +1

    Hi Armando! i identifies with this video, as a photographers that in the last 5 years i was going with my nikon dslr and lenses to shoot like family \ trips and so on.. since now we have really good phones and good quality camera, i prefer to take my nexus 5 instead of cerry the nikon bag, but let put the true out there, no matter what you can't do anything with the phone, like getting good depth of filed like you shoot with 85mm f/1.8, or 70-200 f/2.8 and shoot in a studio with a flash strobes. the phone has a good place in the market but as professional photography dslr still a little market share.

    • @mondobytes
      @mondobytes  9 лет назад +2

      Yaron Rosen Both are very important, though I will say I use to take my DSLR on all family trips including local trips to Disneyland. Those days are over, my cell phone is my primary camera for those situations.

    • @theDudeOfDudes
      @theDudeOfDudes 9 лет назад +1

      Yaron Rosen I am a recent(one year or so) nikon to fuji guy. I was going to school for photojournalism and I had a decent nikon setup of a d600, 24-70, 70-200, ect. This setup was amazing and rock solid which was perfect for what I was planning on doing with my life. I did however switch majors after deciding that the workflow didn't really fit my personality. Once I changed my major to engineering I decided that I didn't have time to shoot any weddings/portraits on the side and I couldn't justify all of the pro glass without the pro pay, so I sold all of my nikon gear, minus speedlights, tripods, ect.
      I couldn't go without a good camera, so I bought a used fuji x-t1. This camera is amazing for it's size, and I would place it above my old D7000, but it doesn't stand a chance when shooting moving subjects compared to a DSLR. I would however recommend a fuji as a small spare shooter for anyone who doesn't want to lug around their full kit, but wants to not be crippled to cell cameras. I try to do the whole cell shooting thing every now and then, but the phone controls and limitations drive me up the wall. That being said, if I was a rich man I would still have my fuji, but I would also have a D4s w/70-200, & 24-70 for fast subjects.
      I really don't know where I'm going with this. Food for thought I suppose.
      p.s. I always thought that wifi enabled cameras were just a gimmick. I now can't imagine living without it, especially if I was still doing photo journalism.

    It is SO true about 'perception' that you mention in this video !!! Although in events like concerts and similar venues, they don't allow ANY camera, cell or otherwise, but people still manage to hold up their smartphone and take photos ! So with the LG G4 they would be at a real advantage !

  • @Jones12ax7
    @Jones12ax7 8 лет назад +3

    I really would like to see a test like this but with low light, where the big sensor of the DSLR would take much diference in image quality. Also, we have to take account that in G4 we can't control the aperture ( it's always F1.8) and so, no control of the depth of field by this way. We are also tied to a 28mm equivalent focal length.

    • @flok93
      @flok93 8 лет назад

      If G4 took that picture with the helmet with 1.8 apperture that way, then it's shitty. I expect much more bookeh at 1.8, no matter what camera.

    • @rainbowmerlin1
      @rainbowmerlin1 8 лет назад

      remember the G4 has a much smaller sensor size - the bokeh is a function of both f number and sensor size. For example an APS-C sensor at f1.8 would still produce less bokeh than a full-frame sensor at f1.8. It's part of the price you pay for having a tiny sensor is that you can't throw the background out of focus to the same extent - if you need to do that, you have to get a bigger camera!

    • @Jones12ax7
      @Jones12ax7 8 лет назад

      I ended up buying a G4. It has a very nice camera, even in low light, but as expected, it is easy outperformed by my D5200 APS-C sensor with a 50mm F1.8 lens.

    Cellphones won't replace DSLRs and mirrorless for a long time coming, not until they allow interchangeable lenses and have 35mm sensors. These two components are the most important parts of a camera and for how good the g4 can do with social, they suck at prints. I work at a camera shop and have a print out of the same photo taken with the iPhone 6 and the Sony a7ii with the zeis 85 1.8. The iphone looses pixels and definition at 8x10 size while the Sony can be blown up to 13x19 size and still keep all the sharpness of a 4x6.

    • @ChrisDruif
      @ChrisDruif 9 лет назад

      Yeah but iPhone 6/6+ only have 8MP sensors, LG G4 has a 16MP sensor. How many pixels does the Sony?

    It's definitely just perception. Smartphone tech has already eaten up many industries and because of its rate of advancement and cameras are definitely not immune to this effect.

    First off, great review!
    As a professional photographer myself, I would love to have a phone that can shoot great quality photos when I do not have my dslr around me (because random shots/opportunities appear and the urge to capture them is there). BUT, there is no way that I would be shooting a wedding with a camera phone. I can't change lenses, I cant use external lighting, I cant have certain controls that I would like that are not available on the G4. That's my personal 2 cents.
    BTW, I do own a G3. I love it. I wish I had a G4 tho...

  • @Caseylawton

    ***** I think we're still a bit away from professionals being able to use them. Primary due to just zoom alone. But for most shots its incredible what the G4 and the S6 can do.

    • @RisinT96
      @RisinT96 9 лет назад +2

      Casey lawton Yup, one of the biggest problems with lenses is being able to zoom optically without distorting the image, and being able to focus on any object within the split of a second.

    I'm sure the LG G4 has a wonderful camera, with state of the art optics. But what wasn't mentioned or tested (at least in the video) was the low light performance. The ability to take photos in the dark depends on how clean looking and capable the ISO is, and how big the sensor is. The sensor on a full frame DLSR is 35mm, about the size of a postage stamp. The sensor on the LG G4 is about half the length of a grain of rice. Therefore although the aperture hits 1.8 on the lens, which is phenomenal, the sensor simply isn't big enough to capture DSLR quality low light photos, which is essential for nighttime outdoors or indoor photography. I would go into interchangeable lenses, but I don't want to waste any more of your time :)

    You made it way too easy for the G4. In bright daylight any smartphone camera can take great pictures. We get that the G4 has a great camera, but you were making it too easy. You could have tested the low light performance and the dynamic range. That's where it gets interesting.
    And with a fair comparison the G4 wouldn't stand a chance against a DSLR. He was shooting sports. Sports photographers use tele lenses. Have fun cropping those smartphone pictures. You talked about wedding photography. Good luck getting flashes to work with the G4. It is raining? Too bad the G4 isn't weather sealed.
    Yes, the G4 has a nice camera, but please stop pretending it would be something close to professional camera gear.

    One thing I noticed about this video was that all of the photos were taken outside with lots of sunshine. That's when, at least for me, camera phones perform the best. Camera phones haven't been able to reproduce the quality you can get with a DSLR camera in low light situations. I would like to see how the LG G4 does in low light compared to a DSLR camera.

    Could you by any chance also compare to the G3?
    Awesome to have the perspective on the G4 from a non-bias pro photographer. Great job Armando!

    A really good unbiased assessment of the LG G4's camera, brilliant.
    I'd love to see Samsung's S6 given the same treatment.

    It's just mind blowing, how fast cellphone cameras have evolved. 13 years ago I was content with my phone's VGA camera just because it could take pictures anywhere. Then we started getting phones that could almost compete with entry level $100 digital cameras.
    The mere fact that a $600 phone that has a camera as a secondary feature can compete with a Canon DSLR is just sorcery. It's amazing how fast mobile technology advances.

    Low light capability is very impressive too, I rarely use the flash indoors in relatively low light. I'm amazed with the camera on this phone.

      Yep, you can actually take astrography with the G4 (tried it out!) which blew me away.

    I have the G4, and a Canon 6D (no tape... I'm not hung up on logos), and will always choose my 6D when specifically going out to shoot photos. The G4 has a great camera, for a cellphone, but being unable to change the aperture and optical focal length, and it's funky noise handling in low light (not bad for a phone, but the dSLR blows it away)... I won't be selling off my "real" cameras any time soon. One thing I will whole-heartedly agree with, though: most venues don't seem to care whether you're taking photos with a cellphone, so it comes down to having the best camera you can get away with bringing in.

    Good stuff! You just made yet another reason for me to go with tje g4! I'm so ready for this phone to release in the US.

    Just FYI guys the reason sky or some background is very slightly pixilated is because LG uses algo to compress jpg up to max 70% compression rating. Mod changing it to 100% compression (no compression) will leave jpg essentially close to RAW (DNG) format or DSLR quality so if those pics were taken with 100% compression rating they would be perfect like DSLR as i'm assuming DSLR is set for 100% compression rating as well. So his comment needs to be taken with that in mind but nevertheless still great pics. My camera has 100% compression always. You can do NR off too but that's rough on white balance etc.

    Very interesting video! I would've liked to see raw images shot with G4 and the canon and post processed and compared in lightroom. Maybe that will be a part 2?

    A very smart way to conclude the video. I totally agree with you. I remember being harassed by some security guards at a mall and eventually kicked off from there back when the first camera phones were released. Who would've imagined that now people can even take pictures/selfies almost anywhere without being followed and banned from public places... Liked your video (Y)

    Yeah, Irvine Spectrum mall is photographer un-friendly too, even when I was testing a consumer grade lens, a Tamron 70-300 VC, they told me I couldn't shoot there.

    Most cameras from last few years can take fantastic photos in bright sunlight. But as soon as you go into darker environment (indoors, evening etc.), DSLR starts to really outclass smaller cameras. So indoor shot comparison at artificial lighting would be better.

    Big fan Armando, continue the great work.. My thoughts though is just let the user think about the sensor size, that's always been the case unless if the implementation is really really bad. Bigger sensor always equates to better images on whether it's a sunny day or low-light.

    What you said about perception is correct. Went to my cousins wedding with my mirrorless camera, and they could not believe the photos "that small camera" took. Some of which were better than the photographer.

    I see people making comments that state the main camera in the LG V10 is better than the main camera in the LG G4 and that is NOT true. The V10 and the G4 have the exact same camera, as they both have 16MP, a f1.8 aperture and they used the exact same lens on both. The differences in them is in the video software features, as the V10 allows for manual mode in video mode and the G4 manual mode is only for shooting photos. The V10 and the G4 are very similar phones, both use the Snapdragon 808 systems chip, a Hexa-core 1800MHz, Arm Cortex-A53 and Cortex-A57, 64- bit processor, Adreno-418 Graphics Processor, similar displays qith the V10 having a second display and the G4 having a slightly higher PPI than the V10, both use the 3000mAh battery. There are plenty of other little things that make each phone a little different than the other. IMO the V10 is an slight upgraded version of the LG G4 or some might say the the G4 should have been what the V10 is.
    The rumors are that LG is looking to continue with the "V" series line as one of the LG flagships, as the LG "G" series line has been there major flagship seller. If those rumors are true and LG does decide to continue the "V" series as a flagship device, I really hope that LG keeps the placement of the power button and the volume controls on the back of the phones, as they had claimed they would keep doing with their "G" series phones, but did not do with the LG G5. I personally fell in love how LG chose to place the buttons on the back of their "G" series phones within minutes of using them when I had got my G3 and I was happy to see LG continued this design with the G4 that I have now. I didn't think LG was going to change the button placement on their "G" series, after all one of the top people at LG stated that the button placement on the back of the phone not only makes total sense, as the fingers land in that area naturally when holding your phone, but it is what set LG's phones apart from the others. Maybe LG will use the rear button placement on the G6 or maybe LG will use that design on the "V" series line of phones..if they continue the V-series, that is.

    Good review. I'd also like to see a comparison in low light conditions to see how effective the G4's optical image stabiliser is, and high ISO noise levels. Californian sunshine makes most cameras look reasonably good ;)
    I certainly need my SLR still, but mainly when I need to use my large Nikon Speedlight, which of course a phone will never compete with.

    I really would've liked to have seen the pro mode vs the DSLR actually. To see what the camera can REALLY do when pushed to it's potential.

    This phone is one of my "old collection" which sometimes (or always) used for photography & videography especially when i didn't (ir forgot to) bring my camera📷. With those perfect camera specs and of course 4K video, G4 will be the best budget friendly for photo & videography on this year. But if someone say "there's no phone camera can beat DSLRs" that's true enough. I mean G4 performs better when compared to older generation of "real camera" (-2014). But if you have more budget, buying DSLR, Mirrorless or HDV camcorder (for video) is more reccommended.
