As someone who often plays games on the hardest (or harder) difficulty settings, I'd like more videos like this: videos that critique those settings and let people know if they're worth the time, or if they're poorly implemented and unfair.
Perhaps those are the gaming novices. Those who do not spend time learning on their own or rather, simply, never were interested in "the world of heroes" as are we. Never got their importance. Talking about these characters can be fun. And dare I say it - informative. The gaming platforms now have found a way to tell stories of our favorite heroes. Wolverine, Spider-Man, Call of Duty - to name a few. Lol. We all know it's Lara
Honestly, my major issue with the game is how you could lose an entire hour if you make one wrong move on deadly obsession. I had to play over an entire hour of the same chapter so many times and it made the game experience monotonous. I think it was a very stupid idea to have very limited saving points between different scenes/chapters.
Gamespot you should re review this game , it deserves a 8+ score. They have put so much love into making this game and it looks very "TOMB RAIDER" and clearly better than the previous two. You gave Rise 9 and this 6? Come on! This game is going to be amazing. I don't understand one thing why some uncharted fan are hating on tomb raider. Its not a question of which one is better, we may have individual preferences. I think Uncharted fan should celebrate Tomb raider because this is something they will like if they like Uncharted as they have more or less similar gameplay. Again, I am a huge Tomb raider fan but I think Uncharted is freaking amazing as well... Why the stupid fan fight... Enjoy both games.
Toufiq Bari deserves an 8, going to be great, these things dont make sense. You haven't played it, how do you know it deserves an 8? I agree a 6 is stupid but you haven't even played it yet, what the fuck?
I’ve heard people say One with the Jungle is actually pretty fun, so I’m glad someone went over their experience. Can’t help but respect this guy for responding to comments too.
4:27 "Deadly Obsession is doable and really rewarding, but I think it's a better fit for a second play through where you feel more comfortable with the game." Not what I did. I jumped off the deep end immediately and went straight for Deadly Obsession. Hearing five trophy chimes in a row (since difficulties stack) was so satisfying...
Deadly obsession is doable but you gotta know how to do without dying much. Lack of checkpoints fucks you over. But unlike Uncharted Brutal mode even with a tutorial it's fuck hard.
Just unlocked my last Achievement on SOTTR, I figured the final boss would be the most difficult on deadly obsession, but they give you a base camp right before you get there, also, as long as your stocked on Ammo and special arrows it wasn’t a problem at all 💯 That being said, getting to that point was no small task! Great game, can’t wait for the DLC’s!
Congratulations, man. I have yet to 1000 the game. I have beat it on easy and went to new game+ and I have to find all of the collectibles all over again. Is it me or is that how the game supposed to be?
@@OneLovePsych Thanks. I will give the very hard difficulty a chance in the coming days. First, I have to do another playthrough on easy and collect all of the collectibles again throughout the entire game. I had completed the game w/ 80.77% completion.
Just got my platinum also today and I was so damn relieved cause there were times it was very very frustrating when you die and you have to do many things all over again and again and again :D
I'm glad that playing without instinct mode seems to work fine. I hate features like that. I'd rather explore naturally and miss a few things than obsessively click the right stick every ten seconds throughout my entire playthrough.
I just recently played Shadow of the Tomb Raider on the hardest difficulty Deadly Obsession for PS4 and I was so happy when I unlocked the platinum trophy after finishing the game
Makes me want to play the game even more. Usually I get these kinds of games for simple fun and the story, but now I can enjoy the story and have a challenge.
Why give the game a 6/10 though? This game is such a masterpiece compared to Rise. Eidos Montreal really listened to feedback and added lot of stuff that fans of the series wants. This is the closest modern Tomb Raider game we can get. The game deserves more than a 6.
kevindatsun2010 This game was boring, had very little combat and a dumb story that made no sense Laura running around in a tribal mask and some nonsense about a Mayan Apocalypse? It was crap!
This is so bizarre... The previous two games were both unanimously praised and this game even is being given 8's and 9's mostly elsewhere. Looking at it another way too, there are many people out there who don't think Witcher 3 or RDR are that fun to play, but they wouldn't dare give them a 6 in a review cos of how popular they are lol Gamespot here however are prepared to face the inevitable backlash from the many fans who (rightly so) think this game will be every bit the masterpiece it's prequels were.
As someone who is about 3/4 of the way through a deadly obsession playthrough now, only saving at base camps is ABSURD. So many times I've messed up somewhere, or missed a ledge and had to go back an hour+.

Hey Marc, just wanted to say thanks for dropping in to downvote my video. I wasn't even the one to review Shadow of the Tomb Raider but I'm glad you still found the time to click the dislike button on my unrelated video.
setting the combat to hard is really great! As for the exploration for some reason as you progress through the game even if it's all normal it just changes
I just beat the game, wow I'm glad i didn't pay attention th the review score gamespot gave this game. This game was good!! I felt like a female john rambo.
I've been playing Rise of the Tomb Raider so that I'm up-to-date before this game comes out, and I can already tell it's an excellent game. So if Shadow is of a similar quality, I'm already pretty sure that 6/10 is too low. I'm going to believe IGN's 9/10 based on the evidence I have right now.
Hello! Glad you respect us. I would love to know what you found about the review unfair? (btw, I'm not the guy who reviewed the game, but I am the guy that made this particular video)
Good to hear that you can disable puzzle hints. I hated how (in at least one of the two previous games - don't remember which specifically) Lara would keep butting in and telling me what she thought she needed to do next, when I was simply enjoying looking around at the scenery most of the time. And at those times where I *was* momentarily stuck for what specifically to interact with next, I wanted to figure it out myself.
I will play on Hard exploration, Hard Puzzles and easy combat, i hated how much combat was in the two previous games, it’s not the reason why I am a fan of Tomb Raider, for me it’s the exploration and tombs.
The only hard part of the other games (on harder difficulties) are the combats, because the enemies get buffed. Tomb Raider wasn't supposed to be an action/shooter game.
Just finished a Deadly Obsession first play through and it's for sure the BEST way to play. My favorite of the trilogy. The tombs are so good without the handholding.
I love it when higher difficulties are extremely rewarding. Be it Halo Reach's intimating enemy AI or The Witcher 3's preparation for combat. I despise generic damage modifiers though as it can go against the movement system a game is designed around e.g. the Uncharted series or Wolfenstein 2.
the big problem with deadly obsession is the climbing and catching a ledged sometimes for whatever reason lara don't respond causing u to die and being that its limited check points is fucking annoying
With Hard mode if you find a certain section too tough you can change one of the settings down to Normal and it will still be on One with the Jungle setting.
One With The Jungle is definetly the best difficulty setting for this game. Rite of Passage makes it way too easy, while Deadly Obsession gets frustrating very quickly unless you really like hardcore gaming experiences, so I'd say this one balances them both. You can actually have a challenge, with stronger enemies and no white paint indicators, but at the same time have checkpoints to prevent you from losing hours of progress. I went through DO for the platinum, and yest it was frustrating at times.
I usually go for normal mode even if just to have an excuse to replay it in a harder setting. Only exception is in franchises I'm already very seasoned (like this one, so I'll take this advice)
Because button presses don't register half the time, really only when the game feels like it .. deaths on deadly obsession were solely from jumps and scripted events.
Gamespot says a lot more than they think they do, with their absence of a response to people questioning why they rated this game 6/10. Their lack of response plainly tells us all one thing. Do not trust Gamespot!!
Haven't played it yet but I definitely think more games should have customisation options like this! It's one of the things I thought would be in all next gen games back in the ps2 going into ps3 days xD
I played it Puzzle and Exploration on hard, combat on easy because I never liked the combat in the new tomb raider games. It just was more streamlined in the older ones.
I play all my games on the hardest possible difficulty. Games are to easy these days imo. I get way more satisfaction and much more fun out of a game played on the hardest settings. Last a bit longer also..not to mention most games AI are way better on the hardest diffs and not dumbed down. Overall a better experience imo.
I always play these type of games on hardest difficulty and I still wont die. Back in the 90s we used to die over the same trap repeatedly until we finally have the muscle memory to get pass it.
Fun game. I first played it on medium and got 100% completion. Now onto Deadly Obsession with new game+ where you keep all skills , supplies, and weapons which makes this difficulty much easier!
Neat difficulty settings here I'd put puzzle pretty high, I doubt helping hand is that needed, seems more like people got to used to being helped they forgot to think for themselves as the commentator said, just made him genuinely think about it Same to exploration, seems more like unneeded outside lost save potential of hours lost, that. Would make me second guess whether to put it too high or not
Complex puzzles have become a staple of the Tomb Raider franchise? What? WHAT? The two reboot-games require no thought what so ever, in any of the puzzles.
I mostly enjoyed the Tomb Raider franchise because of the expanded exploring options and puzzles. The sound effects always made it to a relaxing game and I'd spend hours playing. Shadow Of The Tomb Raider provided all of the aspects of the game I was mostly interested in. I didn't mind the shooting and stealth in the previous games, but it just wasn't why I liked those games. Adjusting the difficulty saved me _so_ much time.
I play em on easy but then I go online and tell everyone I beat it on the hardest mode and tell others to git gud and everyone is super impressed with the size of my epeen and not the least bit annoyed by my posturing.
No freakin wonder!! The frustration is real on one withe jungle. I went through it the first time on that setting. The reviews don’t lie, she dies quick!! Proud I
It is incredibly grating to hear Laura instead of Lara, in my head I can see a highschool friend called Lara biting through her pen because our Maths teacher kept botching her name. [Edit - before anyone says anything, yes he managed to get it right after the 4 minute mark]
I know, right! I don't know why SO many people have a problem with Lara's name. It's downright strange. It happens so frequently it's as if some humans have a biological quirk that prevents them from saying it correctly. lol
It almost exclusively seems to be Americans (our teacher was an import) so I'm wondering if it's an accent thing where ah sounds come out as or's if they don't try and catch themselves.
Maybe. That's as good an explanation as any I've heard. There has to be some logic to it. I don't see people getting Nathan Drake's name wrong, or any other video game hero's, so often, and Lara's been around much longer than most of them. Her actual name should be burned into people's minds.
I think over my entire education there wasn't one class without at least one Laura (in college we had four in one class!) but for a chunk of it we also had a Lara and dear god she could be vicious when people got it wrong... I mean Doc Marten's to the crotch vicious... I miss her.
my first playtthrough iam doing one with the jungle.. I feel like survival instincts is to helpful and I like to figure everything out on my own. more of a challenge
When you were a kid/teenager = Come at me bro (Ultra mega epic hardcore ranger bdsm difficulty) When you know you'll go to work tomorrow = Lemme just have fun bro (ez-medium difficulty :s )
Deadly obsession were crazy easy haha, even compared to Uncharteds Crushing difficulty. The only two or three annoying areas are two or three climbing spots, as Laura loves to do the akward jumping as shoved in the video. But even Deadly obsession is kind and forgiving and actually saves during the quick 'running while jumping' parts in the game. The puzzles arent hard either, hints or no hints, I found Laura annoying on the lower difficulties as she would give hints EVERY time you use focus 😥 just, shhh Laura! Shh! The combat is easy no matter the difficulty, and even on Deadly obsession you will never really run low on ammo as the dodge-and-strike-back move is the best to use in the melee combat sections anyway as Laura insta-kills them after hitting triangle 🤷♀️ Shadow of the Tomb raider is a fun game and I loved the tombs and what not, very easy to platinum, not as easy as Marvels Spiderman, but close 👌
That's funny. I said to my friend when I started the game I'm starting on Hard because the last tomb raiders felt too easy. Funny I am at the end of the story and I found Hard to be a pretty normal if not easy difficulty at some points (health packs and bullets galore!) Fun regardless.
I am playing SOTTR on Hard difficulty. It is a terrific game and wll worth it. I still prefer legacy Core games for fun and enjoyment, but SOTTR is the best of reboot series.
You really shouldnt play on deadly obsession at this current state of the game... I have come so far only to get glitched to death and lose 40 mins of playing.. 4:10 sums it up.... that really happens a lot sadly...
When I get a new game, the first thing I do is maxing out it's difficulty. If you think about it it's a no-brainer: you get more hours of gameplay for your money and that little rewarding sensation you get when you progress
no no no, it just that the only way to save is by campfire. So if you die you just go back to the previous save file .. . which is the last campfire you interacted whit LoL. (Also cut scenes doesn't have auto-saves, and hints is unavailable permanently).
You didn't cover quicktime events, like the disaster runs. That mudslide one killed me about 20 times, and I was playing on easy. Mostly because the white paint is only there for half of it, and my instincts didn't match with the games expectation. Curious to know if those were harder in the upper difficulty.
Well the game is around 30hrs average if I play on the hardest difficulty I'll play it for around 35 to 40hrs so that's fun to increase campaign time but also its frustrating so I'll stick to maybe medium difficulty
The game has been pretty good so far. I am about 40% of the way through and have been playing on normal mode although I did up the puzzle difficulty because I can't refuse a good puzzle.
I put it on the hardest difficulty setting and then made the mistake of buying the skill that give you your survival instincts back and now i'm relying on it again...
it's not short, what the fuck ... Do you people just rush the main story and not explore anything? 28hours to 100% normal and another 23 to 100% deadly obsession.. Piss off, seriously.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider "...And also I noticed. There is a difference in enemy class types on each difficulty level. When I completed the game on "Deadly Obsession" the enemies were a lot tougher (as expected) and fully armored. (Packing heat and had impressive equipment.) To the point; Different in attire... Forgive me if I am wrong about this."

Fun game. I first played it on medium and got 100% completion. Now onto Deadly Obsession with new game+ where you keep all skills , supplies, and weapons which makes this difficulty much easier!
Neat difficulty settings here
I'd put puzzle pretty high, I doubt helping hand is that needed, seems more like people got to used to being helped they forgot to think for themselves as the commentator said, just made him genuinely think about it
Same to exploration, seems more like unneeded outside lost save potential of hours lost, that. Would make me second guess whether to put it too high or not
I am loving this game SO much!
Sorry to say, but I'm fuck playing this game on the hardest difficulty. I'm gonna play this on easy instead & I'm being serious as well.
Deadly obsession sounds like something I will pass on
it's easy ..
Heck yeah! Bring it on!!!
I play em on easy but then I go online and tell everyone I beat it on the hardest mode and tell others to git gud and everyone is super impressed with the size of my epeen and not the least bit annoyed by my posturing.
Played it on hard right out of the gate, did not feel like an effort. Made it worse when tool tips showed up and told me what to do.
I am fully aware I said it wrong in the video. I've always done it my whole life. My guess is because I had a friend named Laura lol.
When you were a kid/teenager = Come at me bro (Ultra mega epic hardcore ranger bdsm difficulty)
When you know you'll go to work tomorrow = Lemme just have fun bro (ez-medium difficulty :s )
Any single player I get I always go for the hardest difficulty
I finished the game on deadly obsession on my first playthrough and I give this game 9 out of 10! it was an awesome experience!
I play everything on Hard first....except for Nier Automata. That game's hard mode can kick rocks. Intro level took me 2 hours.
I am playing SOTTR on Hard difficulty. It is a terrific game and wll worth it. I still prefer legacy Core games for fun and enjoyment, but SOTTR is the best of reboot series.
Ill try the hardest setting after finishing off the normal mode.
You really shouldnt play on deadly obsession at this current state of the game... I have come so far only to get glitched to death and lose 40 mins of playing.. 4:10 sums it up.... that really happens a lot sadly...
Played on deadly obsession for my first playthrough. Best decision ever💪🏼💪🏼💪🏼
I found one with the jungle just right but I'm now playing very hard and dame that first bit I had to do a few times before my first base camp
Actually is a whole different game. Feels like Bloodborne
When I get a new game, the first thing I do is maxing out it's difficulty. If you think about it it's a no-brainer: you get more hours of gameplay for your money and that little rewarding sensation you get when you progress
Or you piss yourself off. Alien isolation comes to mind.
Can someone tell me where is this place on 00:15 .. I've played a lot and i never see this
They finally fixed the gun size ratio, in prior games the guns were stupidly huge, it bothered me that they looked the way they did.
Can anybody tell me.. are there no checkpoints. In the hardest difficulty.?? I mean if you die in the game.. you start over again.??
no no no, it just that the only way to save is by campfire. So if you die you just go back to the previous save file .. . which is the last campfire you interacted whit LoL. (Also cut scenes doesn't have auto-saves, and hints is unavailable permanently).
I personally enjoy hard on all games. I like to push myself to learn, adapt, strategize or i just feel like im ticking boxes on a checklist.
1st play thru on normal....2nd go will be the one that gives me that trophy
How’d you rate Rise 9 and this 6? What is even Gamespot?
You didn't cover quicktime events, like the disaster runs. That mudslide one killed me about 20 times, and I was playing on easy. Mostly because the white paint is only there for half of it, and my instincts didn't match with the games expectation.
Curious to know if those were harder in the upper difficulty.
Well it is hard especially some of the tombs, but the thing is that if you set it to hard you can't make the controller automatic to lock the targets
Well the game is around 30hrs average if I play on the hardest difficulty I'll play it for around 35 to 40hrs so that's fun to increase campaign time but also its frustrating so I'll stick to maybe medium difficulty
I say give it a try on hard and if it ever gets frustrating you can always lower it later. The game is very nice like that.
Deadly Obsession ROCKS
The game has been pretty good so far. I am about 40% of the way through and have been playing on normal mode although I did up the puzzle difficulty because I can't refuse a good puzzle.
I put it on the hardest difficulty setting and then made the mistake of buying the skill that give you your survival instincts back and now i'm relying on it again...
I love this game!!! I'm a big hugh fan of Tomb Raider got the previous 2 also so I ha the complete trilogy
Not to mention playing it on hard will actually make it last as long as a regular game does instead of being really short
it's not short, what the fuck ... Do you people just rush the main story and not explore anything? 28hours to 100% normal and another 23 to 100% deadly obsession..
Piss off, seriously.
Shadow of the Tomb Raider
"...And also I noticed. There is a difference in enemy class types on each difficulty level. When I completed the game on "Deadly Obsession" the enemies were a lot tougher (as expected) and fully armored. (Packing heat and had impressive equipment.) To the point; Different in attire...
Forgive me if I am wrong about this."
So why the hell you gave it 6? Cuz you wanted it to be have lower score than uncharted?
