  • Welcome to my first ever video game review! In this video I review the Tomb Raider reboot trilogy, which consists of Tomb Raider (2013), Rise of the Tomb Raider (2015), and Shadow of the Tomb Raider (2018). I go over the basics of the trilogy and how each game executes on them. I also discuss my favorite parts of these games, as well as things I wish had been done differently. It was a lot of fun playing through this rebooted Tomb Raider trilogy, and I hope this video is both informative for newcomers to the series and interesting for series veterans!

    personally, i also found the 2nd one to be the best of them, the issue with the 3rd one was really the overabundance of NPC's that really made the game feel a lot slower, tho i appreciate the option to have them speak in their native language (even tho Lara awkwardly replied to everyone in English)

    • @stijnvdv2

      yeah, Rise is definitely the best; I like that it heavily borrows from Indiana Jones and The Last Crusade stuff; you can even find the False Holy Grail in one of the tombs that is almost an exact replica of the movie. However the only puzzle that was really a puzzle was in Croft Manor where you had to combine knowledge from the items to crack the safe, I wish there were more puzzles like that but I guess that would have made it far too hard for the game journo's that are nothing more then political activists and commentators; that really don't like games. I think game dev's pander to them far too much.

      Yeah I liked the graphics/style of the first game. It had a gritty look that fit the feel of the game. While Rise and Shadow's graphics are objectivly better, I feel they kind of had a different feel to them. The first games graphics perfectly went hand to hand with the survival feel of the game.

    • @pablomonsalve3911
      @pablomonsalve3911 Год назад +8

      @@vengeance1450 Yeah, the first game has a different tone. It's much more oppresive, raw and desperate. I guess it's only natural since in Rise and Shadow, Lara sets on the adventure of her own volition, while in TR 2013 it's a situtation she didn't want to get in and survival takes priority. I wish the other games had kept a feeling of desperate survival. The only times I felt it again was when Lara tracks the jaguar at the beginning of Shadow, and suddenly the jungle is so scary and Lara stops tracking because she realizes that she has been spotted first by the jaguar, and also when Lara risks being trapped under the ice in the river in Rise, but since Jacob bails her out, it's not as good.

      1st one will age terribly. Gameplay is fun but graphics are not the greatest, effects for example look terrible. 2013 was year of The Last of Us, Bioshock Infinite and GTA V to get the perspective. Not to mention Uncharted 3 looked way better in 2011.

    At the 18 minute mark, you describe why I liked Shadow of the Tomb Raider the best. Less combat, more puzzle solving and exploration. The first two games were way too close to Uncharted for me. I was missing some of the classic feel of Tomb Raider and I think Shadow provided that. Less action can sometimes be a great thing.

    • @sagemodejedi6041
      @sagemodejedi6041  3 года назад +64

      That's a fair point. I personally like these games best when they balance puzzle solving and exploration with the right amount of combat, but I can totally understand if you prefer more puzzles and exploration. The tomb's in Shadow were some of the best ones of the trilogy I think

      Yeah that for me is why Shadow is my favourite as I liked the characters story and puzzles and I'm not really that big a fan of the whole run out of there like your ass is on fier stuff that the first 2 games had. I think if you do appreciate a good balance of everything then Rise is probably the best one. But personaly I prefer puzzle and good stor ytype games as I've always struggled with QTE's due to my diasbility making me slower on the controls and the 2013 game certainly had a lot of those which for me is why it's my least favouriet and whilst I love the puzzles and story of the game I think they overdid a lot of the fast paced stuff. I know there is less heavy action in Rise and Shadow but for me those 2 managed it better so at least it still felt like Lara was trying t oout think theenem yrather than just outrunning or outfighting them. I still need to back in and plaqy Shadow's DLC's at some point but I'll probably do that when I next feel ready to revisit the games

    • @vengeance1450

      @@MyRascle Yeah, I think Rise is my favorite but near the end of the game it gets so annoying with combat. Like when you start fighting those magical guys (I forgot their name) the game starts to get annoying and repetitive. I like when there is a good balance of combat and puzzles/exploration.

  • @charliequinn_

    Shadow is my personal favourite in terms of gameplay, because it felt the closest to a classic Tomb Raider experience. It had a much greater emphasis on puzzles and exploration, with combat taking more of a backseat which is how Tomb Raider was, before the reboot. Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE the combat, it’s so much fun. But as a long time fan of the series, there was just a bit too much of it. TR (2013) had the strongest story, whilst Rise had the best visuals. It’s an all round great trilogy.

      Thank you! Finally someone who prefers Shadow, even for the same reasons as I do. I don't get why this one isn't as popular as the other two. I played them, enjoyed bits and pieces here and there, but never felt like I was playing Tomb Raider (more like a weaker Uncharted with way less humor and more emphasis on survival). With this game, I finally did. The exotic locales, the atmosphere, the gameplay, the pacing - after so many years the magic was back. And in came the professional and customer reviews in rare unison: NOT AS GOOD AS THE OTHER TWO!
      I fail to see why. I don't care for the other two, but I'd have loved to see the franchise continue in the vein of Shadow.

    • @_tsu_

      Nah shadow has the best graphics by far.

  • @victormunhozzz
    @victormunhozzz 2 года назад +28

    Honestly... Each game suits a certain play style.
    If you're looking to gun down people or do elaborate stealth kills through the possible sequences, Rise provides you with a lot of good fights;
    Shadow is much more focused around the world-building and organic exploration of the environments, puzzles and whatnot (and cuter outfits);
    And the first game is a great balanced linear experience, with the optional tombs being a simple (which isn't bad) bonus to the adventure. And of course, 2013 has the best hook I've ever played in a game ever. The horror introduction is very different from what the game is like going forward, but it feels very engaging going into it.
    Overall, this trilogy rules

    Love all 3, have played them multiple times. Rise is probably overall the best one. I really do think Shadow suffered from having a different writer then the other two. The first writer didn't get to finish telling their story from 2013 and Rise and then the second writer had to try and work out how to continue the story without knowing what the first was thinking.

      Except Lara's not even slightly a badass the second the game takes away control from the player. She's nervous, jittery, naive, weak, and vulnerable for almost the entire story. The first instance of her having a spine comes in when she claps back at "Everyone close to you seems with wind up dead" with "Better keep your distance, then". The entire rest of the game she's in danger, running from danger, or keeping her trap shut and just letting Reyes dick around with everyone's safety. The only other instance I can think of is when she goes against what Roth tells her to do and goes to save the second pilot.

Also, the two cities you get to explore...there were downsides to these areas (specifically pacing) but they were both really beautifully designed and interesting to explore. Further, the cities were nothing like anything in either of the other two games.

    Great review!! I loved playing all 3 games but, just like you, I'm so incredibly in love with Rise of the Tomb Raider. While Shadow brought a few improvements in mechanics, graphics and Lara's design, I still think Rise has got a superior narrative. And I really missed Lara's longer rants at campfires in Shadow, mostly bc it allowed us a glimpse of what was going through her head at the time. I don't think Shadow delved much into Lara's psyche, like.. I still don't know if she was doing all that for revenge or what..

      Gosh, I hate these pathetic monologs of this overdramatic Lara in Rise :D Shadow is much better for me. It's a real Tomb Raider game.

    • @vengeance1450
      @vengeance1450 2 года назад

      Yeah I didn't really like Lara as a person in Shadow. She seemed like she didn't care that she got tons of innocent people killed and didn't care who died as long as she got to her goal. In the first two games she was very kind and supportive of other people but in Shadow she only seems to care about herself. Like Jonah will be talking about his dead brother or something and she'll completely blow him off and continue talking about her or the riddles. I heard that Lara in the original Tomb Raider games is kind of a bitch which upsets me because I would like to play those games but if she is stuck on herself the whole time I don't know.

    • @vengeance1450
      @vengeance1450 2 года назад +1

      @@Cez24 I wouldn't say they are "overdramatic" she literally almost dies every five minutes so I think her sitting down and talking about everything that happened is realistic and understandable. That's yout opinion though and you're welcome to it but saying it's being overdramatic is kind of the wrong choice of words.

    Subbed, awesome review of the trilogy, love each game equally, they are one long story, and each game is a part of that, I love the combat, exploration,the puzzles, the storyline, honestly,I hope they continue the series one day, not rebooting it again, as this trilogy still stands to this day as one of the best versions of Lara Croft ever made, so hopefully it comes back with a 4th game, that'd make me happy. 🙌😃💯

I get lost in those because i dont know whos jurnal lara read. This is HUGE problem for me because i dont get involved in story. Stealth also dont work for me in shadow.

    Thank you for making this review. It's a breath of fresh air to finally see a review that judged these 3 games on their own, rather than to constantly compare them with past games ("she's not as badass as the past games", "she's too wimpy", "she's not as acrobatic", etc). I like every iteration of Lara, and these 3 games are awesome.
    However, different from you, I like Shadow more because of the puzzles. They were more challenging, and I love to set the difficulty to be hard because I love to solve the puzzles on my own. Lara commenting on how to solve them sometimes annoy me because it robs me the chance to really scratch my head, so I love when she didn't give any clues or the solution not shown to me if I unintentionally press the survival instinct, lol. I'm more of a puzzle-solving guy than a combat guy, so the last entry is the one I most love.
    Great review!

      @@sindelscat9336 those people stopped thinking as soon as they heard someone say it was “woke”. It’s not woke, it’s the perfect way to update an aging franchise. They’re so hung up over politics and their own issues that they can’t think. It’s not woke, it’s actually realistic, and Lara gets scared, but she also gets BRUTAL. Wading in a sewer full of blood, killing everything. It’s nonsense, you can see though it easily if you look at reality.

    The third game always felt to me that it just kind of meanders aimlessly for a significant amount of the time. In its effort to give the player so many gameplay options to unlock, villages to explore, NPCs to meet, etc., it loses a lot of its forward momentum IMO.

    You should have mentioned the dlcs too.
    Especially the Croft Manor DLC for Rise is amazing and provides a better understanding of Laras past, her family, what happened to her mother, what happened to her father, why her father was searching for the divine artifact and why she wants to continuing it and so on.
    It's a shame that they put all this information in a DLC. Many people will miss out on this one.

    Great job on the review. I hope you continue to make videos as the editing and all worked great, no umms.. ahhs or anything to really bore me or make me want to click away. i found there was a few times the shadow of the tomb raider needed a bit more polish, the mirror puzzle for instance escaping the tomb after it's solved the jump after you glide out of the place is a little too specific. In Mexico when it starts to flood Lara should automatically jump but nope! Some of the camera angles could have been a bit better as some deaths felt like the game did a poor job hinting what I was supposed to do. They handled challenges better, there was a reward for talking to certain villagers. The piranhas felt like an after thought. I do have the definitive edition of all 3 games and found there was too many guns. not metal gear solid 5 bad but still it was a bit much. The first game is the best, the ending chapter a bit silly and the tombs not very rewarding but my second is shadow of the tomb raider though it's really straying away from the formula that made it work. Rise of the tomb raider in the trilogy my biggest issue was when I had to back track to get 100% of the relics and so forth some of the levels you had to go back and forth on base camps. The story was dull, the saw mill and geothermal levels (off the top of my head) were massive obstical courses at times. The challenges were crappy in Geothermal (thankfully they fixed diving in #3), the worst being throwing pumpkins in a basket like hoop. This isn't an NBA game. However going up that waterfall to get certain items when back tracking 9 out of 10 i just used the camps. One of the worst places where there is no save point is in the lost city i think it's called in rise of the tomb raider there is a relic and after you get it, you need to do so much crap, the game looks great, the snow especially walking through it but the wildlife had too much health even with fully upgraded weapons. Plus the grapple hook required too much luck and not skill so back tracking once you have that relic is not fun. Back to shadow of the tomb raider. The maps suck in #3, they look better but can be very unhelpful to the point i had to google how to get a few places. There's still no way point marker such as in GTA or saints row. I don't know why they won't let lara drag corpses either, or allow for a non-lethal approach such as tranquilizers. Maybe you'd get more exp and the down side is that the enemies would be back in certain places when you back track? who knows. Plus the DLC in shadow of the tomb raider was hard for the sake of being hard. I hated all of them.
