    If there was any character that was at the forefront of the fifth generation, I wouldn’t doubt that some would say, Laura Croft. A character that encompassed the badass adventuress fantasy and delivered games that were received and sold well. It was unfortunate then that due to being overworked through releasing a game every year from 1996 to 1999 that we received one of our final major Tomb Raider releases, Angel of Darkness, which was received so poorly that the entire series was put on hold. Laura's initial run was headed by Core Design who showed a sentiment of wanting to move on from the character and so Eidos Entertainment shifted Crystal Dynamics in place to pick up the pieces, which they successfully did, releasing a few new titles and remakes along the way. In 2009, Eidos was acquired by Square Enix and had a team working on yet another reboot of the series, this time focusing on a more grounded and gritty Laura Croft, and how she became a Tomb Raider. This new trilogy titled the “survivor trilogy” was met with critical acclaim, at least, for the first entry.

    Something interesting to note about Laura Croft's time out of the spotlight during the 7th generation is how a seemingly spiritual successor took its place, and gamers noted this as this particular title would be given the fan title of “dude raider”. Now let’s not get too ahead of ourselves here. I’m not saying Uncharted is some Tomb Raider rip off and I highly doubt anyone would suggest that but I think it’s important to note how significantly Uncharted and Nathan Drake not only influenced games in the 7th generation but became the new face of the action-adventure genre. So even though Uncharted didn’t borrow too heavily from the original tomb raider games, Tomb Raider 2013, certainly borrowed from Uncharted. If Laura Croft was going to reclaim her throne atop the adventure genre, then she’d have to reinvent herself, and she had one key advantage over Nathan Drake. Uncharted 1, 2, and 3 were all released to critical acclaim and the flaws with the series were clear. Tomb Raider had a perfect opportunity to learn from Uncharted's mistakes, while also reimagining its successes. This is what makes Tomb Raider so interesting to me and that’s why throughout this video I’ll be looking at the game through this lens. Tomb Raider was dethroned by Uncharted and was now back with something to prove, and its confidence was part of how successful it was at surpassing Uncharted in some ways. There were many points where it felt that Tomb Raider was painfully and humorously aware of its competition and inspirations, which is why I felt it necessary to look back on the trilogy, starting with this entry.
    No series in the adventure genre is as iconic as Tomb Raider. Within this Tomb Raider Critique and Tomb Raider Analysis, I analyze the reboot that followed a long run of Tomb Raider games, in this adequately titled, Tomb Raider 9 Years Later. This Tomb Raider Review while mentioning the previous games, will focus solely on the Tomb Raider Reboot. With a New Tomb Raider around the corner, there is no better time to do a Tomb Raider 2013 critique, and needless to say Tomb Raider 2013 holds up 9 years later. This Tomb Raider 2013 Analysis, the first part of my Tomb Raider Retrospective, will consist of all 3 games in the Tomb Raider Reboot Retrospective. This is A Critique of Tomb Raider and the Tomb Raider DLC but this isn't a Tomb Raider Walkthrough or a comprehensive History of Tomb Raider. This video will be a pseudo Tomb Raider vs Uncharted video with accompanying tomb raider gameplay, that discusses both Uncharted and Tomb Raider Years Later. Created by That Boy Aqua

    for me, it was all about the atmosphere of the 2013 game; so beautiful but subtly hostile and ominous when you look closer. there was always something tragic about it, a mood set immediately as soon as you see the coastline littered with downed planes and ships from all eras. it's something that the next 2 games, as much as i may have enjoyed them and as advanced as they were, failed to replicate

    "One side wants to kill one person to save thousands and the other side decides to kill thousands to save one". This truly would have made for an interesting point, and I also believe this would fit quite a lot with the character of Lara Croft from older Core games. She is honestly quite a mean and self centric person in some of those. The old Lara would definatly kill those she doesn't like in order to further her own goals/save her friends.

But what's interesting is most of the people we killed in the game, didn't actually count as canon, only the ones we saw Lara directly deal with, that's why they titled it as a survivor is born. because it's not the just the people, but finding a way to get off the island and make it is what really what it was about. so Rise is really about Lara stepping out of her shadow, but she didn't go crazy like people thought.

    I just recently played Shadow of the Tomb Raider for the first time, years after I had played the first and second game of the survivor trilogy. And something that got very clear to me is just: these games are just really, really fun. I don't think that they are telling the best or most memorable stories, but it just feels good to play, explore and do all that. Also the more horror-ish elements that these games do, they do somewhat exceptionally well in my opinion. If this trilogy would have actually been a Survival Horror Trilogy, I think it would have been really good.
    Playing the third installment, now more grown up and with a better understanding of games, their mechanics and a better judgement therefore (I believe), I really wanted to revisit the entire trilogy again. To have a look again at all games and not just the third.

    Actually, Uncharted borrowed a LOT more from the LAU trilogy than you remember. Certain puzzles from UC4 amd Lost Legacy were heavily influenced by TR Underworld (2008). Ledge climbing and the use of the grappling hook were in the original TRs first as well as in TR Legend (2006). And UC straight up copied the climbing of vertical craggy walls from TR 2013. And use of vehicles has been in TR games since the TR2 so it isnt anything new if its brought back to future TR games.

    Speaking of deaths... Light spoiler if you don't wanna know ahead of seeing it.
    I think the most messed up one is if you die while you're hung upside down in that one segment. The enemies will come to Lara's body and slit her throat to make sure she's actually dead.
    Watching a character die in a game is one thing... but to see a character you play as die and then have their death visually confirmed afterward like that is something you don't really see in games and it makes me feel a sense of shock and disbelief since the protagonist is meant to be alive unless the story says otherwise.

      Yeah, Nathan Drake just has that charm about him that Lara doesn't. I like her but she never tells jokes, is always serious, and sometimes doesn't seem like she cares about others except herself. Plus the story in the Tomb Raider games are not memorable at all, except for Lara and Jonah, I could not name you one other character from any of the games. But with Uncharted, I could name pretty much every character since they were either unique or cool. Another thing is the final "boss" fights. In Uncharted all the boss fights are very good and memorable. Especially 4s fight with Rafe, that is my favorite fight scene in any game or media at all. But the Tomb Raider boss fights were so bland and kind of like any other enemy just slightly stronger. Only one that was sort of fun was Rise of the Tomb Raiders boss fight since it wasn't just a head on attack and you have to use stealth, it reminded me in The Last of Us when you have to fight David as Ellie. Anyway sorry for rambling on so much, I just love Uncharted and thought I'd give my intake as well.

    I've never understood the Mary Sue accusation. It's a very selectively played card. If Lara is a "Mary Sue" because she doesn't end up becoming a paraplegic or dying of septic shock by the end of chapter 2, then what is Nathan Drake? Just an action hero? I mean sure, Nathan grew up on the streets where he developed some inexplicable parkour abilities, but none of that helps you fight helicopter gunships, well armed paramilitary and artillery etc. nor escape vertical trains ... unless you're an action hero.
    And anyway, Lara has had a lifetime of archery lessons, and it's pretty clear she's had training as a climber. I would also wager she's had a lot of horse riding lessons. Gymnastics. Maybe martial arts too. It's a pretty easy thing to get.
    And yes, she kills a lot of people by the end of the game, but it's also an action game ... what else is she going to do? Nathan is a veritable mass murderer by the end of his first game. Yet no one bats an eyelid. One thing's for sure, Nathan never shows an ounce of shock or remorse at the carnage he causes. :/

    • @ThatBoyAqua
      @ThatBoyAqua  2 года назад +1

      That’s my bad I wasn’t trying to say she’s a Mary Sue, and I don’t think she is. It’s her fault they ended up on the island and she makes plenty of mistakes which refute any arguments of that IMO.
      Regarding her killing ability it strikes me as a ludonarrative dissonance more than anything else and that has never bothered me in either this game or Uncharted. Her adept surviving abilities are expanded upon in audio logs that explain her and Roth did a lot of exploring together prior to the events of the game.

    However it's all stops there the 3rd instalment, is bad I don't like it feel like a cheap knock off and it's a shame to

      same thing here, and i really want them to ditch the "serious" Lara and go back to the charismatic/badass/adventurous Lara like in the old games

    I'm pretty sure The Tomb of the Lost Adventure is Amelia Earharts wreak. Even though it's not especially told its heavily implied.
    10:00: I can remember exactly one, and its "A Survivor is Born". Basically it's Lara's theme for this game, and is also the 1st main menu music. Granted though I did play through the PC version, and Definitive Edition like 20 times between the two, and in 2014-2016. I will readily admit this game was my favorite game for a while lol.

    I'm pretty sure "A Survivor is Born" was the original subtitle for the game before they switched to just calling it "Tomb Raider", so the words at the end were just a nod to that rather than some cheesy letting you know that Lara's a survivor now.

    was interesting to see your perspected on this. because yea from this game it looks like a nathan clone. but if you look at the originals you can see they made it look more like farcry then anything. The originals had great puzzles. and lovable characters. even the movies were fun. so it was interesting to see your style. I watch the hole thing and it was a good interesting review :) lovely view of the ending video ^^

    Im probably in that small minority of people who playd the reboot Trilogy first and then went back to the old Games out of curiosity. So without any Nostalgia to grasp on to: Man do I prefer Old Lara Craft to the new one. The Survivor Lara is trying so hard to be this deep charakter but it ultimatly just comes off as very shallow and boring tbh. Old Lara didnt need to be dark and tortured for you connect with her cause she ultimatly wanted what you as a Player wanted: Having a fun Adventure traveling the World. I feel that kind of a lost art in Video Games where just through the Design and very few lines you could instanly create a reconisable charakter. I know some people think that is outdated but I way prefer that over having to constantly talk my ear off.

      Old Lara was developed when video games provided escapism.
      New Lara was developed with realism in mind. Perhaps too much realism. A mentally fragile young women strong enough to take a million bullets.

    • @Lolotrixx
      @Lolotrixx 2 года назад

      @@satyakisil4289 it isnt really realistic either. Thats what your lead to believe when looking at the marketing but in actual Gameplay you still leap ridicoules distances and gun down hundrets of Enemies easily. I just dont see the point of making your Game realistic when you have barely anything in the Game that supports that theme. I wouldnt even be against Survival Lara Croft but then atleast commit to the idea, but they didnt do that at all, they just turned it into an action game cause Uncharted was popular at the time.

    What annoys me about the multiplayer is that it had achievements which by now are close to impossible to get because of the inactivity in that game mode. Many aren't also "one-action" achievements and require repetition so on the off-chance you do manage to get into a match once, you're unlikely to get many, if any, achievements done.
    I really wanted to complete the achievements for this game, but the multiplayer ruined that.
