👇 ABOUT ME:
Hey! I'm Damian Keyes and I've worked with musicians every day of my life for the past 20 years. The internet is deeply untrusting understandably and here is my background so you can have the full picture.
When I was 18, I was signed to a major label (dropped 6 months later) and at 23 I co-founded a Music University in Europe called BIMM (valued at $300M). I’m also a bass player, I’ve played for a number of artists including Eric Clapton, Alanis Morrisette and Billy Cobham. I initially retired at 30, but realised that life gets boring if you’re not building!
I have always been in-between the music industry and education which is how I ended up building my RUclips channel - I’ve been teaching artists how to release music long before it was a ‘niche’! I now educate artists around the world with my Academy, RUclips channel and I work directly with labels internationally alongside owning a live agency and management company.
It’s great to meet you and looking forward to working together on your music!

For the person(s) that disliked this video... you already lost my friend. This is the truth whether you like it or not. Time to stop with the excuses and start making some changes to your career 😊🤟
Damian Keyes great video dude. I will take your advice and let’s see what happens. Much love, Ch’O
@@myhomeonthenet3120 Good one 😂😂😂
Right on the spot!!! I am exactly one of those who say "see what happens". I am still unsure about my future. Hopes and dreams have been forming, but I'm not deciding and I'm not going for something. This video is a gem!!! 🤘🏼
@@myhomeonthenet3120 Now that is an acceptable use of the phrase 😂
Damian Keyes thanks bud. Miss you all, living in France now dude so hopefully that will give me a chance to get across to see you all again now I’m a few thousand miles closer. Hahah. Ch’O
Genuinely thought those 3 words that ruin your music career were going to be "Let's have kids!" 😂
"The condom broke." followed by a couple of other words is another phrase I believe.
" damn i laugh "
Am I the only one worried about his tea getting cold 😩
That’s my song on a Damian Keyes Video 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Thanks so much guys ❤️
So cool! Nice song and congrats to the placement in the video! 😁🏆
Even though you know this, I want everyone to know how good you are at this game. You work so hard and allow everyone (me included) to come on your journey. Attention isn't something that can be demanded, it's earned and you show this every day. Keep on smashing it and your fan base will keep growing! Also great job on the new single! 🙂🙂
Cool
Thank you@@GusWMusic, I'm so chuffed :)
@@DamianKeyes That was such a lovely comment I don't even know how to respond!! Thank you! I'm so grateful for your support and all of your hard work to help people like me, I learn so much from you, its seriously appreciated!! Can't wait for book 2! :)
I've been in that position where I work hard on an EP to just release and be stuck, I learned the hard way!
We are all guilty of not using our money the right way. SO RIGHT YOU ARE SIR.
The thing with "see what happens" is that we can not control what happens next. That's not just in music, that's in life. Nobody can predict the future. So if you release an album, you never really know how well it's going to do unless you're already established. I'm sure someone like Lady Gaga doesn't have to worry as no matter what, she'll sell enough copies of her next album to keep her from needing to get a "real" job at the very least. My band on the other hand (which I didn't intend to rhyme but there we go)...we sold 2 copies of our last album. It had a lot of plays on BandCamp, but only 2 people were willing to pay for it. We are getting ready to release the next one soon, and again we have no idea how it'll do. It'd be nice to sell at least 3 or 4 copies this time. I know there are things that can be done in regards to marketing, getting word out, etc, but even that does not guarantee sales. Plus marketing is complicated. Get it right and it can work wonders, get it wrong and it can do serious damage to the band/brand. It can also be very expensive, which is fine when you're Lady Gaga, but not when you're broke. Sometimes it feels like "see what happens" is the best we've got. We can only do so much when it comes to promotion on a zero budget before we just have to do just that.
I have a bunch of ideas for some challenge videos coming up and I'd love to work with you on one of them if you would be up for that.. I don't have an idea on which one yet but hopefully I can help if we work together on something 🙂🙂🙂
@@DamianKeyes Sure, that's be awesome. Thanks!
too many people protect themselves with indifference. being vulnerable is about facing fears, which is the engine of creativity.
This is a brilliant video. It's too easy to become complacent once you've put out a single or album and it's a hit. You've got to treat the music business AS a business and your band as a going-concern assumption.
The goal is to engineer what happens so you can guide what happens next. With the right strategies and tactics music is a wide open field of possibilities. I would guess only 10% ever give it a real go and probably only 10% of those folks go long enough to ever really “see what happens.” But the 90% sure do talk a lot! Good stuff Damo!! 🐒
Thank you dude, you are so right 🙂🙂🙂
"See what happens" doesn't necessary means do nothing. When you don't have experience in promotion you can't plan exact sequence of actions in order to promote the track. So in order to learn how to promote you need the data - need to experiment with different methods - some works some don't. So you need to run the experiment and SEE WHAT HAPPENS in order to analyse the result and learn from it.
I would argue that isn't seeing what happens, I would argue that is reacting, experimenting and improving in order to build. That is a smart strategy which allows a creator to learn and evolve and grow. When musicians say 'I'll see what happens' they almost always mean it in a negative way. Musicians now have a plethora of free amazing education to help with a strategy even if that strategy doesn't work.
I do appreciate what you are saying though, you need to study what is happening in order to change the course of action 🙂
I just realised that a lot of your vids are worth watching a couple of times not just once - sometimes I even take notes! this is one of them...having to totally revamp my image of myself as a singer - singing is merely what I do...apparently I'm a sales and marketing expert first and foremost. Thats actually my main career..my own singing is the product I happen to sell.
Having to really educate myself in this. totally alien viewpoint for me.
I just love your videos. I definitely think that the words we speak determine our future...always be positive about our journeys :)
Anger is a gift...... great video. I’ve said “see what happens” too many times in the past largely as I’ve bottled it, not ‘cos I’m lazy. No more.
Thanks Damian. This past year I have given more time & attention than ever to the business aspects of music making. Your videos are an absolute goldmine & thank you. Just to add to your pet hate, mine ppl saying “That’ll Do”. Only tells me you’re not giving your best & not prepared to dig deeper :( When is the book out btw??
I say "see what happens" all the time, but I actually have very concrete plans and am working really hard to promote my releases.
I just say it so I don't have to go in details about music marketing ideas with people that might not be interested in listening to it.
I think thats completely acceptable as long as you are focused that will be a winner! 🙂🙂🙂
that's so true! I also get irritated by people saying that. It makes me feel they don't have the minimal interest to be serious and dedicated.
I might subscribe Damian,
but we'll see what happens ;)
lol I'll have to try harder 😜
@@DamianKeyes haha love your work man! Of course I'm already subscribed! You told me to! Great advice in this btw, will have to get the book too, awesome marketing!
Boaz Anema 🤣
You are killing it evrytime but people think you are their enemy, when you only talk about the reality, people don't want the reality ! Keep doing it, it's awesome !
3 words: *“Here’s my Paypal”*
😂😂😂😂😂
The only thing I own that I could possibly get a decent amount of money for is my Rickenbacker, and that'd be like selling all of my internal organs. The misery that would come from being without that guitar just wouldn't be worth it. Even on the off chance that the $1000 or so was enough to make the next album sell enough to buy another Rickenbacker, it wouldn't be the same one (or at least it'd be highly unlikely). Perhaps I get to sentimentally attached to these things, but that's who I am. It took me years to save enough money to buy that guitar. It was a dream to own a Rickenbacker, it'd be a nightmare to have to part with it. And then what if the album still didn't sell? There's still no guarantee that spending that money would make even the slightest bit of difference.
The Neon Chimp Channel advertising companies will guarantee nothing... which is not to say don't advertise, but save up a little in advance and NEVER sell a good instrument in order to give the money to GOOGLE or RUclips...
Do NOT sell your favorite guitar. It obviously makes you happy. There are other ways
You have to spend atleast 2 times as much time marketing/promoting as you spend making it.
that is very very true. never forget that you are a businessman too
Realising this more and more every day
Thank you. You are telling it as it is. It is in truth really hard to not get bummed when a release or exhibition wont fly, but I need to hear this. This is how the world works now. No one has the time to care about a release unless you push hard for it it seems. It is a full time job, that does not really pay unless you keep going and push hard.
hay Ole; you're absolutely right , now how to split your time/resources between actually creating music and selling it? and yes... you've also got a day job on top to get going .
@@sfundawge Personally I have to consentrate on one or the other. When working on music or art, that is my focus and when I have the product ready its all about having fun with the presentation. Even though it sometimes feels like shouting out into the void.
Wow! I just shared this with my wife who is my helper as well and told her this guy just keeps getting better... this is the best! I just found you on RUclips and I’ve been steady watching your videos. Thank you. I am implementing right now.
Awesome tips Damian! My band are releasing a single at the end of this month and I've been using a lot of your lessons to plan our marketing around the launch. We are putting an album out later this year and I plan on following all your tips on how to get the word out there! Very exciting times!
I feel what you're saying about having a super expensive guitar but not marketing, but only because it's a 2000 dollar guitar. music is top priority and you put all your resources into that when you're starting out, you dont think about marketing and all that you just want to get good at making music
thanks for your great video and tips just subbed ya :) appreciate the advice! cant just sit by and see what happens. push that shiiit
Stuff always happens when you're knocking on doors.... putting out content.. being consistently persistent...
Mr. Keyes, thank you for the advice before I do anything stoopid. Complete transparrency: I'm clueless. It's the first time I'm doing this (making music for consumption online) and I'm also at the end of my teather and DESPERATE! So "see what happens" is not an option.
Haha love your brutal honesty. It’s why I tune In and watch. You make sense and cut through all the shit. Seriously the videos where your a bit “grumpy” crack me up cause I see your frustration and know it it to be true. Your advice is beyond helpful it’s vital to achieving your goals in then music industry. THANK YOU!!
How would one send you music? I’ve got a ton of royalty free stuff that your show could benefit from.
Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
I know someone personally, who's motto are those three little words: See what happens. And this person is probably the happiest person I know. This person has a potentially deadly disease, is doing all medically and psychologically possible - to my knowledge - and yet lives every single day more conscious and happier than any other person I know. This person is not expecting the unexpected. This person found out the hard way that total control is a fiction. Nobody knows what's gonna happen tomorrow. Perhaps your music career is over for another reason. Damon , don't be grumpy. It's a waste of energy.
To be fair, that's a different circumstance. A deadly disease is out of your control, and acceptance is valuable to a good mental state. HOWEVER, the problem this guy is talking about, is that it isn't out of your control for music. You can market it, you can get it out there. If you put it down to chance, you take it no further. The point is that people need to take control, something that isn't applicable to a terminal illness.
Jürgen Schuler great comment
Great video! As a musician myself it’s hard to accept the truth sometimes, but you were spot on with everything! Keep making helpful subjects!
Mate, I'll buy your book. I'm sure the cost of that to me won't come anywhere near covering the true cost of the ideas I've gotten from your videos for free. Bring it on!
Ah Neil, thank you so so much that has made me happy and started my morning off with a bang! 🙂🙂🙂
Nothing worse than seeing a Band with a really good album and not marketing it . Down to the local pub for the launch and expecting a miracle afterwards. Another No No is after a gig, they say " you can find us on facebook etc etc . They then pack up and leave ? What about finding you after the gig for a chat and maybe Collect a few Emails ? No money required for that. What most Artists don't realise is you need a year to two years to prepare, market and tour an album. It needs to be given the greatest possible chance of success. Michael ( Venue Manager 25 years, Artists promoter/ Manager 12 years & Events.)
I am new to your videos, I just want to let you know I REALLY appreciate the reminders, different perspectives and the opportunity to share it in someone else's words to others I know need to hear this content..have a great one! Thanks!
Chris Harding
I think that "See what happens" is more like saying that you're putting a "halt" on your progress, which envitibly keep you from growing in your music career. Honestly, what's worse is the 3 word phrase "I give up". It sounds obvious, but I don't think people realize that this is truly where your music journey will end. So, if you decide to give up, then that's worse than saying "see what happens". Although, I do agree that this too is a pretty unhealthy way of thinking.
Great video, I have done this myself with another band and basicly when you "see what happens" almost always, nothing happens. Keep making great videos! Cheers!
Thanks dude, we have all done it and it never works out well 🙂🙂🙂
Another great video, Damian! I think "see what happens" translates to "Lack of Motivation" to really put in the effort to grind daily.
Love your videos and channel man! Really awesome :)
Make it happen 😃 This channel is gold, thnx man 🎸🎸🎸🎸👍👍👍👍
+Antonio Saric thank you so much Antonio 😊😊😊
@@DamianKeyes no, thank you 🤩
Thanks for being rude bcoz that's the reality and I loved it Mr. Keyes
Love your content man! Your Channel deserves to be so much bigger! Keep it coming
Love your attitude, passion & eloquence dude. Subscribed & can’t wait for the new book. 🐍🖤✨
+James Cassidy thank you so much James 😊 book will be released in the next few week 😊😊😊
Nice one Demo!!!
Really excited about the book. Im definitely getting my copy
Definitely gave me a good bit of motivation to stop half arsing things and get serious! I shall be purchasing the book!
Thank you so much Kristian 🙂❤
Really solid advice! I especially like the 2k guitar example. I play a small 3pc drum set that I pieced together and refinished myself and have worked the last 3 years to minimize my expences so I could have the resources and time to invest in my music!!! Ty for the great videos!!
Thank you so much Mario 🙂🙂🙂
Finally, finally a useful video on this topic
Subscribed. Thank you for great info.
+123ThisIsMe thank you so much I really appreciate that 😊😊😊
Stumbled across this and those three words resonated instantly!
DON'T apologize for getting triggered by something that you're passionate about. EVER❣️awesome thoughts as always 👊
Interesting comments. Sheeesh. I've been guilty of saying those 3 words and I'm certainly not smashing it right now. Perhaps there's a correlation? Perhaps! Good advice here. Stop saying "see what happens"....and see what happens! Haha. Thank ya sir!
🙂🙂🙂 Thanks Chris
I like grumpy videos. Great tips as usual!
Thanks Josias 🙂🙂🙂
Excellent points. My problem is, however, that I set goals but don't know how to achieve them. Say, you want 100 people to come to your next show. How do I do that?
Now that is where it's completely acceptable and I can help with that. I am working on a few challenge videos coming up which hopefully will be more of a map of showing what to do while doing it rather than me talking about it. All 3 are being filmed over the next month as they are bigger production jobs than usual but hopefully will help
🙂🙂🙂
@@DamianKeyes Brilliant. Looking forward to them.
Best video thus far man. It really got to me. I hear you and thank you very much.
Thank you so much! 🙂🙂🙂
and don't apologise for being grumpy, people need to hear this! :)
FACTS!
Besides, he's funny as fuck when he's "grumpy."
Some really sound advice Damo, I’m going to see what happens when I implement it 😉
Thanks for the tips Damian! Much appreciated 🙏🏾
Thanks so much Durreyl 🙂🙂🙂
Damian, you can sleep well tonight. Hallelujah, I soo like totally agree with you here dude! Sorry I called you dude - uugh. I just spent (wasted) the morning with people who are saying they are dying for something to happen but the moment they are asked to do anything they back down (often with anger at me). "see what happens" = I have given up. Own that and don't waste the space on the stage (which is limited even on the internet) which others more interested in expressing themselves could be using. Do or not do (Yoda).
Yes Marketing can suck but that is probably because you are coming at it wrong, far more than any fact about the suckiness of marketing. If you want people to buy your product them make a product that is exceptional then find the people (all 4 of em) who are dying to get that record. You= Professional Marketer. Do it again.
I love your content. Thank you for putting so much time and energy into this channel.
I can’t wait to see the videos about marketing your new book. With that said, I’d like to ask you to do something for me..... and possibly many others.
Could you record an audio version of the book this time? While I am an avid reader, I am also dyslexic and consume most of my content via video and Audible.
I’ve never publicly shared that before, but I want the book, so I’m taking one for the team here.
Either way, keep up the good work!
Thank you so much Shaheed, you are in luck I have already recorded the audiobook and it will be out around the same time. Thank you so much for this message bro I really appreciate it! 🙂🙂🙂
Damian Keyes that’s fantastic, thanks brother!
Great advice and love the idea for featuring artist in your videos. Thanks for the work you do Damian!
Thank you so much! Hopefully we can help showcase the work of people putting in the shift and give them an extra pat on the back 🙂🙂🙂
@@DamianKeyes It's a noble idea and I think it will make a big difference to a lot of artists. 🙂🙂
Just wanted to say that yout insights and ideas have made us reassess and rethink all that we (thought we) knew about this game and wanted to thank you for that. You've made a community that's learning and improving in what they are doing and it's a beautiful thing. Thank you for that 🙂🙂🙂
Thank you for the great advices...
Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
i tick all five the fact is it makes a massive difference x

What's suck about not selling your music, no more gold, platinum, diamond disk plaque..
I love your videos bro, you totally changed my perspective

Great advice. Look forward to reading the book!
Thank you so much, that has made me smile! 🙂🙂🙂
Very catchy title that caught me instantly! Congrats! 😁
Thank you so much 🙂🙂🙂
Great advice 👍♥️😘
Those words never even occurred to me
We all need to get told off sometimes, nothing but love here....I find my phrase is "what did I do wrong" lol
Thanks dude, yeah sorry for my rant it came from a place of love 🙂🙂🙂
@@DamianKeyes no need for sorry bud, it came from the right place, always good nuggets of truth in your vids, and the truth is what pisses people off 95% of the time 😉😀🍻
How do you push a single? Besides keep reposting it on social media?
ZAAY I don’t know but I watched your ‘Matches’ Video and all I gotta say is KEEP GOINGGGG🔥
Durreyl P sheesh that’s love! Good looking out 🙏🏽🙏🏽
ZAAY no doubt I’m gonna follow you on IG let’s connect!
Durreyl P most def just hit you with the follow back!
Love this. My advice is think about what you do before the release instead of after it. As soon as it comes out it's old news very quickly unless you have a lot of opportunities with magazines, radio stations etc whereas if you can release singles as part of the build strategy to look after your audience coupled with content coming out every few days so people are on your journey it becomes more about building momentum.
While this video is about EP's there is a section in it on singles and I will start working on a single release video this week to put out.. Thanks ZAAY 🙂🙂🙂

I love your videos! Super insightful... my band is releasing a new album in 5 days and your strategies are extremely useful. Thank you
Thank you so much Mike 🙂🙂🙂
Damian Keyes id love all of your advice. I’m hungry to succeed and I’m hat in hand when it comes to your advice. Please take a look at ruclips.net/user/TilAllIsOneOfficial and give us all the sage like advice that we can use! We release our first full album release today. Your help is deeply appreciated!!!
Hey Damian, I'm at a bit of a crossroads in my life, and I know you don't have all the answers, but possibly your own take on it or some advice from when you were younger?
I recently graduated from college with a music (entertainment) business degree through a business school. During one of my classes, we took a trip down to Nashville to meet industry professionals, and all of them just kept saying stupid cliches like, "just get your foot in the door." I get the sentiment, but then it's almost always followed up by some shitty nonpaid internship in a city where the cost of living is $55-70,000 p/yr like LA or Nashville, or a normal desk job that pays half as much as any similar job, but OH... yOu'Ll WoRk In MuSiC.
I like music, but should I give up on trying to pursue it as a career, because lately, I've felt as though its an industry that's filled with people that for whatever reason will take the lowest pay in the most expensive cities to just be an entry-level HR or IT or sales account manager to be able to say they work in the music industry. If I don't feel like music is the sole and only path to being able to fulfill my personal and professional goals, should I stop pursuing a career in it?
Thank you for a great video. Very insightful and actually I have learned more about where I am going wrong.
Thank you so much Gwynn, it's all about learning and improving and experimenting while being patient. So keep on smashing it and I'm here to help wherever I can 🙂🙂🙂
Damian Keyes thank you so much. I will certainly keep watching and keep in touch and importantly making those improvements. It is challenging but, worth all the effort and all the fails for those little successes. You are a legend. Looking forward to your next video
I don't think we have the same definition of grumpy...nice video btw
When you need a good kick up the pants, this is the go-to channel. This is relevant to any business. thx.
Never said that, never will. I'm writing and recording my album at the moment absolutely independent... I guess release might even be somewhen 1Q next year... and I'm still thinking about how to best publish it and what I can do to make it come out as great as possible! Have no real idea yet, but I guess ideas will come overtime... I'm sure about that ;-)
did I mention, that I literally have no audience, yet? I originally wanted to wait, until I got at least 1000 fans on spotify :D Yeah, but I'd like to get it out this century :D...
Great stuff dude, I would recommend the answer is how you are going to look after the beginnings of an audience even if that audience starts as friends and family and grows from there. If you look after your audience with value they will spread the word for you. That value can come in the form of video performances or vlogs or blogs or stories etc
If I can help with any ideas let me know 🙂🙂🙂
The truth is painful and (often) hurtful, hence the backlash in downvotes etc. But I salute you for putting your neck on the line! Now, let's 'see what happens' with my upcoming single release 😅 (kidding)
+Fergus Daly Music thanks Fergus 😊😊😊
Micro efforts are mega important for sure. Thanks for keeping it real
I love that phrase... Micro efforts are mega important! LOVE IT! Thanks Nino 🙂🙂🙂

Cheers Damian, excellent counsel.

Gonna press play on this video and just see what happens.
Reality therapy at it's best. Good video lesson.
I just have to say this again: Thank you Damian!
Good video, I'm 100% guilty of doing this. (side note: A bit of a weird mid resonance going on with the sound, maybe just the room?)
Our band agreed on a goal at the beginning of the year (record an album). We're not going to reach that goal, and the attitude has turned into "let's see what happens (when it happens)". What should I do? I don't want to go about it like that but everyone else seems to
Try to send them this video :)
Thanks for another great video Damo! I think your tea might have gone cold though :'D!
HA HA Thanks Don, You are so right by the time I got to it, it was tepid to say the least Thanks dude! 🙂🙂🙂

Thank you! :)
Hey..... if it happened to Justin Beiber, it can happen to me (even though I'm 45 and overweight).
So if I was to spend £50 on marketing like you suggested, would I be better off putting £50 on one post or £10 on 5 posts?
Might be worth doing a few quid on 5 different posts and seeing which performs better. Then £50 on one you have a little bit more confidence on what your audience is after
