- I got fired from my ballet company. Hey guys! In todays video I share the story about when I gott fired from my ballet company. OOF!!! Painful. Geting fired or let go from a ballet company is SO NORMAL!!!! As painful as it was at the time, it honestly was the best thing that could have happened to me in my ballet career. Obviously the last thing that I ever wanted to have happen was to be fired from my ballet company, but I TRULY believe everything happens for a reason. Being let go from a ballet company is just a part of the process unfortunately. It happens to 99% of dancers out there, and I just felt like not enough people were talking about it!!!
I hope by sharing the story time about when I got fired from my ballet company, it sheds some light on the reality of being a ballet dancer. I also hope it helps ANY OF YOU struggling with rejection or audition season. I have had my fair share of rejections as a ballet dancer but the greatest thing about all of them is that I have learned SO MUCH!!!!
I hope you enjoy this video today about when I got fired from my ballet company many many years ago!!

Never give up your passion. Stanley Herbert told me I'd never be a dancer when I was in his ballet company. My feet are not a ballerina' s feet, so , true I never became a ballet dancer, but there are many more forms of dance than just ballet. I worked hard and discovered other avenues, performed, was a successful professionally paid dancer touring doing musical theater and non-ballet dancing. I was paid to do the thing I loved most.
And best if all ... I still dance and perform even tho I'm over 70, but just for charity... CHOC Follies is such a great way to give back using my previous talent.
Fantastic! Yes keep dancing forever. "Never Stop Moving" Luigi
You’re very inspiring, thank you for sharing your story☺️
WHY HASN'T THE CREATOR ACKNOWLEDGED THIS COMMENT!? What ?
Amazing! ♥️ Thank you for your story luv! ✝️ It’s so true to never give up.
My goodness, you did such a big service for others by being so honest! You are definitely resilient and brave!
Thank you so much💜
You didn’t fail they’re the one who fired you go out there who cares do what you love what you love what you love is ballet find another company maybe the Royal ballet the Bolshoi ballet do what you care about girl don’t care about them girl they suck
Ballet mom here. Thank you so much for sharing your story. Sometimes the route from training to career seems so mysterious to those of us unfamiliar with the ballet world. I know lots of people do not move from trainee to a company their first try, but hearing your story personally really helped paint a clearer picture.
Thank you so much 💜💜. I love all the moms that watch this channel!
Oh my gosh you were so brave to go back the next day I would have been like BYE
GIRL I wish I had that option hahaha
Thank you so much for sharing!! I’m graduating next year and I’m really scared about what will happen and if I’ll get a job but you’ve made me feel more relaxed and know that whatever will be will be!! Thanks x
Omg Thank you for such a sweet comment!!! There is nothing to be scared of. You got this girl.
I was a competitive dancer from central Ohio so when I saw the BalletMet logo I clicked!! I took many classes there over the years so I’m fairly familiar with the company but I never officially joined the academy. The director is super kind and I always appreciated him. But many of my friends that went there officially, most had a great time, but like every ballet school, if they don’t like you, you’re out. I’m glad you were let out kindly! Everything happens for a reason and I’m glad to hear you’re doing better now.
Everything happens for a reason for sure!!
Thank you so much for this video 🥺💓 I literally had a similar experience with a ballet school I won’t name but this vid is giving me so much courage to talk about my experience and the tea that came with it.
Yes, Goldie!! Your honesty and perspective are so refreshing and I'm sure very helpful for other dancers in the phase of trying to land a more permanent contract!
Thank you Kirsten!!! 💜💜
Oh my goodness yes this reminds me of my first year of college. Looking back on it is wild! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you so much for opening up and sharing! I would love to hear more about what it's like to be in a second company as I'm not that familiar with the process or experience. I probably won't ever even join a company as I'm too old and unskilled but still am loving your videos and learning!
Yes!! Id love to share more about my second company days. Thank you!
Contractual dance positions are pretty normal in the industry unfortunately. Thanks for informing us on the whole process of getting let off and how seasonal work happens. Auditioning for other companies shouldnt be anything to be ashamed of! It happens.
Same thing happened to me in a contemporary ballet company. Had no idea how to stand in rehearsal in pointe shoes for hours with almost no purpose. Now 6 years later I have learned so much and am working with a contemporary company that is perfect for me. I relate to your story, thank you for sharing!!
Thank you for sharing and being so honest and vulnerable! It would be super cool if you posted a 2nd company video
I love this!! I also would love to see a 2nd company advice/general company advice video!!💕
coming right up!!
Thank you so much for sharing your story!
That’s why I’m here!!
i just recently found your channel and i am OBSESSED. I love your personality and it is so great to get a look inside a professionals career and experiences as a student. whenever you upload i get so excited to go watch
you just made my day!!!!! thank you
Very brave to share your story. Wish you all the best!
Thank you!
This is indicative of a lot of dancers experiences, however I hope they paid you! Alot of the time dancers in 2nd companies aren’t even paid, and are lucky enough to get a Stipend. It’s not worth sitting in a rehearsal learning everyone’s parts it’s just not haha.
I attended the BalletMet summer program as a young dancer and in a private meeting with one of my ballet teachers that summer she told me I was too big to be a dancer and that I would never make it (and at the time, I had pretty bad disordered eating ) so I am NOT A FAN !!!!! My best friend there had to leave the trainee program to go to an inpatient eating disorder treatment. She said other girls there were sick and were not getting help. This was quite a while ago, but there was just a really toxic environment in the school. Poor management, just there for the money. Not sure about their company culture, but I got a lot of negative vibes from the school!
Wow I am so sorry that you had such a terrible experience there. There is SOOOO MUCH that the ballet world needs to learn. It’s time for this type of behavior to END.
Two of my best friends grew up in the BalletMet school and these meetings are very common. The ED culture at BM is deep rooted.
Omg my eyes also get so swollen after crying and I always wonder why. Glad I'm not the only one :'D
It’s the worst!!
My eyelids also get so heavy which makes me feel so sleepy😭
Yes please second company videos!
Your videos are so informative is it possible for you to make a video on being a trainee how is it different from being an apprentice or dancer in a second company.
Yes!! Stay tuned!!
Hi! could you do a video on trainee programs vs. second companies? or just your opinions on trainee programs
Yes!! Coming next week!!
This was a great story! Thank you for sharing! Writer question: I thought a second company like a trainee program? Is that correct, or can it be something else entirely?
You are right! Some second company programs include the trainees as well. Typically they have a smaller group of dancers that receive a paycheck in the second company, and then they have a trainee program as well that is still more of a professional training program before they become actual Professional dancers.
@@GoldieJane Thank you so much for telling me this! You made my day!
One more question: in that case, is a second company like an apprenticeship, or is that different, too? And do they provide pointe shoes for second company members (okay, two more questions)? I’m writing a fiction about a young dancer in a professional company, and I want to get my info as accurate as possible.
omg when you were talking about the cyclone I was on the floor laughing e all know that feel
Please please please make a video on second company/trainee life!!!!
coming right up
Your sweater is so pretty! Where's it from? :)
How do you know when to leave a place that is toxic? How you know that you have endured enough?
Never give up🙌🙌🙌🙌
You’re 25??? You look like a grown up teenager OMG
hahah I think Im going to take this as a compliment?
Loved this vid, so unfortunate that introspection comes with aging at times but I doubt ballet met would’ve made you happy for a long time anyways! I’d love to hear about your second company experiences - was that also your role in the company you left a year ago?
I started as a second company member tree and worked my way into the company before I decided to leave 💜
If it makes you feel any better, you look a lot like Nina Ananiashvili! Idk if you’ve gotten this before but it’s the first thought that popped into my head lol.
What reason did they give you?
Or you were in the CO! How did you like that first year?
What school did you go to?!
They should have told you in your meeting that they were letting the entire group go, and not make you think you were singled out. That’s unnecessarily stressful. In fact, why didn’t they just inform you all as a group??
Go to ballet Magnificat in Jackson ms
Where is your sweater from?
Zara!
Omg tbt🤣🤣🤣what a year
HA feels like another lifetime ago!!!
I feel like the company failed you. You were naive bc it was your first season as a professional. They knew that when they selected you and they should have given you the tools to be what they needed you to be not just left you to your own devices and then go "woah this girl doesnt know how to do things the way we want/need her to lets get rid of her instead of showing her how to be the ballerina we need"
Im sure there is a lot more to the story that you couldnt include bc of time but from what you shared I 100% say the company should have done better for you. Im glad it worked out for you in the end.
Well, it wasn’t just her. They let the entire group go.
Tell us an injury story
Oooo great idea!
@@GoldieJane I’m watching Don Q ballet on RUclips because I never heard of it until I started watching your videos.
soo choppy
Get married to rich man and create studio and theatre for yourself...
The reason why you were let go; I’m sure you might have figured it by now. Was not because of Ballet Met’s decision, rather it was your behavior ; “ you were not the most professional in the studio during that season.” As an ambassador to the arts that’s the most critical part and engaging in out reach programs should be slightly more satisfying than being on stage. But don’t let my subjective opinion hinder with your career I’m glad you were able to recover and dance professionally for another company but I hope that you can re-edit and re-post this video to clarify to the younger generation that Ballet is not full of rejection. If everyone can put their best foot forward they can get far and take on a ballet career. I’ve never been fired nor have been let go rejection in ballet is not as common as people presume, And Lizzo still doesn’t like you.
i believe she made it very clear by taking accountability and being honest in this video. in the moment that's a very heartbreaking thing to happen, regardless of how it happened! i'm not sure what you mean by "an ambassador to the arts" but if you have dance experience then you're aware that in the transition from training to professional you are suddenly not told what to do and it's hard to know your place right away.
There seems to be alot of ballet dancers on RUclips who speak about their rejection stories as they say it's a very competitive industry and I read that in the dance schools only about 12% of trainee dancers become professional.
Did you miss the part where she said her ENTIRE GROUP was let go????
@@haltiamava she said ambassador to the arts because that was literally what the 2nd company’s job was - she said it in the video. To go out in the community and represent the company. That’s what an ambassador is.
You talk about ALL of the good, the bad and the ugly. These conversations are important for someone to reveal what it's really like. Good stuff! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🩰
