When I was dancing, we were forced to wear pink or white stockings. As a dancer of color, my skin color shined through the stockings looking horrible! I am so happy many schools now allow the dancers to have stockings AND shoes the color of their skin! It looks so much better! When Precious Adams competed at Luzerne, she went bare leg with matching shoes! She looked so spectacular and won an award!
Yes! I mentioned the skin tone tights thing to a teacher at my studio and apparently they're changing their policy now, which brings me much joy. Precious Adams is fabulous as well I love her so so so much.
Hey, I'm actually the admin of the JCS Instagram where I the. that photo is from and a student there currently. So at JCS the girls teachers each choose a different uniform for each class, so every class is different. For example the Akademie B girls wear navy blue, and the graduate girls wear a plum wear moi. And the studios in the new building we have are amazingly temperature controlled so I know the girls never have problems with the heat.
Could you do a review of the show Dance Academy and about how realistic the show is to real life ballet dancers, also what the actors technique was like in the show, etc?
I’m from Dutch National, so a fun fact. Every year has their own colour! So from youngest to oldest it’s: white, sky blue, light grey, dark grey, navy blue (which I am), dark red (from the video) and than black. 🙃
Black 3/4 sleeve was always my leotard of choice when I got to the upper level of my school and we could wear whatever we wanted. I’d be sweaty no matter what I was wearing so the heat was never a big deal.

My favorite leo to start the day in for company class was a 3/4 Vneck black leo. I found a brand that sold a silky soft one that kept me warm as I was beginning a long day of work. I often changed at lunchtime into something sleeveless, but those black sleeved leos saved me so much in cold winters!
@@kristavait3155 Really? It looks soooo much like the Wear Moi Galate style! And I can't find them anywhere on the Freed website, are they made especially for the RBS or something?
I think the brown uniform, in the purple colour, but with the shorter skirt of the white uniform would be my optimal set. At RAD we had a similar style to the SF School without the seams, and it with short wrap skirts for the juniors and knee-length for the seniors. Cotton leos for class, satin for Dress. Absolutely loved it. And of course, either a ballet wrap for warm-ups (knitted by your mum or gran) or an oversized black sweat with no neck and cut off sleeves that you used for leg warmers. Ahh, the 80s. LOL
Paris Opera Ballet School uniforms are (were... haven't ckecked lately) all Degas. Each division has a different color. The 1st division which is the upper level, shown on the picture, is wearing the "taglioni" leotard from Degas. And yes, this "chest criss-cross" shape is tricky. Little trick : you have to sew it so it doesn't open and fits well on you.
The last ones were my favourite. I think the black makes a statement and I LOVE the neck line. The neck lune on the paris one were so beautiful as well.I also really love the light brown one with the skirt. I love how the skirt and detailing are a darker brown than the leotard.
I have always loved the vaganova leotard with the ribbons and hated the colour, never really thought about the skirt issue. Royal Ballet I love that they have matching tutus.
My current uniform is a white Leo and skirt ( in the exact style of your aurora 🤭 ) but the new one is the same style but in teal and velvet with a crown embroidered on the back! I think it’s pretty cool 👍
My school was affiliated with the Royal Ballet and we had a Vee neck sleeveless leotard in a different colour every year-white, baby pink, baby blue, maroon, navy blue, Diploma and Technical levels were all black with different cuts-the same Vee neck then cap sleeves, 3/4 sleeves , long sleeves and then the final year was a navy blue long sleeve with long skirt. We also had the option to wear a matching short wrap skirt in the first three years. We spent almost as much on our uniforms as we did on our shoes and fees every year!
A given colour, choose your cut is really common in the US. PNB is similar but black in their preprofessional division, but at least a few years back lower down it was a fixed model, which changed colour as you went through the levels.
I learned ballet online initially and I learned Balanchine technique. Then I started lessons in classical- you’re right it’s so different! I think I prefer Balanchine though
Loved this video! My studio has us wear any solid color leo for the highest level which is what I am! We can also wear skirts! For the younger girls it’s either a black leotard or blue leotard and then the level below that (the youngest one) is lavender leotard or black leotard!

Loved this video! So interesting! Maybe do a part two with other schools, and more American ones please! And I actually loved John Cranko’s uniform, 3/4 sleeve leotards are the best!
It would be nice to see a comparison between all the different exam boards too. Most little dancers here in the U.K. wear the uniform for the syllabus they’re following such as RAD or ISTD for all their classes and exams, for example.
Yes, I wore the same colours as the Royal Ballet School at my local RAD classes. Up to grade 3 it was lilac, grade 4-5 was navy and grade 6+ was burgundy!
Good luck to everyone in school now❣️ Upper body support is key for me as I am too large on top, ha! I appreciate Claudia taking that into account always, thanks Claudia❤️
When I was at boston ballet my uniform was the one at SFB, but in a few different colors! comfy, my only critique is that the seam where the bust layer met the regular fabric and the top in the back as pointy!
The funny thing about the SF Ballet one: If you do any kind of dance that you need a leotard (I'm an aerialist) in the Bay Area...you own a variation of this leotard because its the only one you can find last minute (even I own one lol) I adore the brown one. It looks so classy and elegant.
Loved the video!! Would you make a video about the economy when you enter an academy? I really want to be at an academy, but my family doesn't have enough amount of money.
I am at Paris Opera Ballet School and the uniforms changed a couple years ago. The last year is now a burgundy color, same shape as royal ballet except there is no shoulder-sleeve. We don’t wear a skirt at the barre but then we do in the center. Sending love 💕
yes! they constantly come down, and i have to replace them very often, as they lose their shape. The straps are also super stretchy and don't hold up very well
Went to ballet school in The Caribbean; we started off with a bright blue, then about grade 5, we wore black leotards. No skirts to hide our turnout. So you had to be on point.
Would love to see a story time or a collab with someone who went to SAB to learn more about the differences between technique and pedagogy. In terms of appearance, the Vaganova leotards definitely look the nicest, but wouldn't really suit people with warmer skin tones.
my studio has black for all levels, with the exception of pink for the lil ones. But we're also allowed to wear some other colors if we choose, and any cut we'd like as well as skirt optional. i typically prefer black tho because yes it looks great on everyone and its also ideal for *those days*. i agree with you about black, Claudia lol
I've had I think the same leotard as the Australian ballet school and mine was from capezio. The leotard is very uncomfortable because of that cut... also mine was too big from the straps so we had to sew them in little
Interesting, I have broad shoulders and I love to emphasize them. I think it’s because I have wider hips though, so they create a more hourglass shape, then an inverted triangle...or maybe I’m just weird.
When I was at White Lodge ,we wore black and white. We had some exchange students from the Paris Opera. The girls wore pale blue with spaghetti straps, they were soooooo sexy but a bit snooty.
POBS has different colours according to the year, and they change regularly. The photo you showed was from a few years back, when 6th-year students wore white leotards. Now they wear burgundy uniforms. I'm pretty sure it's the same for Vaganova and SAB uniforms (I think SAB imposes a colour for each year, but not the leotard itself). You can see lots of pictures of POBS uniforms on their Facebook page: facebook.com/EcoledeDansedelOpera/photos/?ref=page_internal
My studios what we call the "Company Leo" is a custom Anna Duo Yumiko leotard. It's really pretty but a lot of us don't like it because it comes down a lot lower than what we're used to and it makes us feel kind of uncomfortable
Great video!❤ I believe you think long sleeves would be so sweaty and not breathable because you live in Australia, where i personally live the studios are almost cold especially in the winter.
I actually love VBA's brown uniform! xD But, a little biast as I attend Mont Royal Ballet Academy and we train in Vaganova! My level has a camisole silver leotard and I love it! I also agree on the JCS: I personally do not like long sleeved leos lol xD
If i'm not mistaken the Royal Ballet School leotards are the same fabric Freed uses for the RAD exam leotards, thankfully RAD are allowing alternatives now as long as it's the style permitted so my Grade 7 got Bloch tank style. The fabric doesn't ball as quickly as the official Freed ones but it's still my least favourite. Vaganova's uniform is just so modern, some of the other schools are still stuck in the dark ages. Personally I don't like built in skirts because they don't always sit in the right place depending on your size.
my students have pink, burgundy, light blue, purple all in a boat neck from theatricals, different color for each level. when we get to pre-pro we have either plum, navy, or black wear mois. i like our uniform quite a bit, definitely gets boring though.

@@ilonacabley Ah okay 🥰 so you don't use Degas leotards anymore
Those RAD Leo’s suck! The dye runs and they get baggy as cotton rich outer layer! X
yes! they constantly come down, and i have to replace them very often, as they lose their shape. The straps are also super stretchy and don't hold up very well
I'm just glad I only just had to wear them for exams - I had a different uniform (black shiny lycra with red accessories) for everyday class.
I am in love with the sports top you're wearing 😍 how supportive is it?
I really like the look of 3/4 sleeves
My favorite uniform of all times is the Vaganova uniform in junior years, it has THE perfect purple
Yay my fav time of the week!! I have an ABT audition today!! Wish me luck!!! ❤️
You're going to do amazing!!
Good luck! You are gonna be AMAZING! ❤️
Omg! Good luck! Don't be afraid or stressed! And be hopeful and sure for yourself! Because you're going to be A MA ZING !!!!!🤍💜🤍💜
Good luck! You will do great!❤️
Good luck with your audition!
My school does pink for younger ages, purple for middle and black for the older- but older are allowed to wear wharves they want every now and then:))
This is such a creative video!!!!!
We have those leotards from the Australian ballet school and it is really uncomfortable because I have a bust 😭😭
So fun! Would love to see a review of the junior schools too!
Love you Claudia. Great video as always!❤️❤️
my studio has black for all levels, with the exception of pink for the lil ones.
I love that brown. It seems very contemporary
My dance uniform was black leotard and pink tights. Color leotards were for rehearsals.
Omg I've never heard the expression buzzies before lmao
Soooo Australian!
When I was at White Lodge ,we wore black and white.
We had some exchange students from the Paris Opera.
The girls wore pale blue with spaghetti straps, they were soooooo sexy but a bit snooty.
My fav might be CJS because I'm a fan of sleevs and for me it seems more like dark blue instead of black but I am not sure :)
You’re right! I guess people don’t look close enough haha, I’m a part of that class in the picture and we all love ours
yaaaay such a fun video!!😍😍
Haha... I’m a Balanchine baby... I’d be out of my depths with most other styles!! Embrace the claws 😂😂😂😂😂
You think of the best videos that dancers love to watch!
I don't know if they still do, but Northern Ballet School in the UK used to have a burgundy long sleeve, great colour, terrible leotard.
The Vaganova colour is the best colour ever!
You can see lots of pictures of POBS uniforms on their Facebook page: facebook.com/EcoledeDansedelOpera/photos/?ref=page_internal
love your accent !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! teach me, I'm Jamaican btw, haha
It’s Australian
i wear custom royal blue leo’s with matching skirts for pointe! :) level 5a
the only thing i hate is the straps are tight and they don’t have higher cut legs :(
Claudia you are glowing! I love your tan xx
My studios what we call the "Company Leo" is a custom Anna Duo Yumiko leotard. It's really pretty but a lot of us don't like it because it comes down a lot lower than what we're used to and it makes us feel kind of uncomfortable
i love the way you say buzzies 😭😭😭
Great video!❤ I believe you think long sleeves would be so sweaty and not breathable because you live in Australia, where i personally live the studios are almost cold especially in the winter.
I actually love VBA's brown uniform! xD But, a little biast as I attend Mont Royal Ballet Academy and we train in Vaganova! My level has a camisole silver leotard and I love it! I also agree on the JCS: I personally do not like long sleeved leos lol xD
I actually REALLY hate cap sleeve leotards 😂😭 they make me feel so inelegant
I do vaganova
Well my teacher was from vaganova
Love you Claudia! 💗
Personally I don't like built in skirts because they don't always sit in the right place depending on your size.
omg that’s me in the sf ballet photo!!
my students have pink, burgundy, light blue, purple all in a boat neck from theatricals, different color for each level. when we get to pre-pro we have either plum, navy, or black wear mois. i like our uniform quite a bit, definitely gets boring though.
