Installment #4/Some lesser-known ‘classics’ that deserve more attention (continued):
Ross/The Pit And The Pendulum & s/t - these are some real ‘lost classics’!
    Ruby/Red Crystal Fantasies
    Ruphus/Ranshart
    Russ Ballard - s/t
    Sandy Davis/Inside Every Fat Man
    Sapo - s/t
    Secret Oyster/Sea Son
    Seguida/Love Is…
    Sherbet/Slipstream
    Splinter/The Place I Love
    Squeezer/Joy Jell Fantasies
Starry Eyed and Laughing - s/t - criminally underrated band!
Stray Dog/ While You're Down There
    Streetwalkers/ Chapman Whitney Streetwalkers
The Sutherland Brothers & Quiver/Beat Of The Street
    Tea - s/t
    Tempest/Living In Fear
    Thundermug/ Ta-Daa
Tom Fogerty/ Zephyr National & Myopia - a two-fer (both releases from ’74), the last name is (obviously) well known from CCR but his solo work post CCR just didn’t catch on. This is John’s brother
Tom Scott/ Tom Scott & The L.A. Express
Tony Ashton & Jon Lord/First Of The Big Bands & Live 1974 BBC In Concert - Sept 12 1974 - another ‘name’ act but how many own these?
Ville Emard Blues Band/ 1973-1975 Au Complet - some great blues rock from ’74 is included
    Wally - s/t
Wild Turkey/Rarest Turkey - includes stuff from 1972-78 but the ’74 stuff alone qualifies this…
Zzebra - s/t - I think quite a few have heard of the other Zebra from the 80’s, this is the 70’s UK jazz/prog/fusion/rock band formed from the ashes of greats If & Osibisa. There’s A LOT happening on this one!
‘Honorable Mentions’: Big year for Tommy Bolin (does get love on SoT but still not enough!) as reflected in: Live At Ebbets Field 1974, Live ’74, From the Archives, Vol. 1 & Bottom Shelf…Three Man Army also had a big year in ’74, not so much for one single album but for Two plus Mahesha…Waterloo’s s/t, this is the short-lived US psyche/prog band NOT Abba! Thirsty Moon’s You'll Never Come Back almost made it, same with Stepson’s & Shanghai’s s/t and Satin Whale’s Desert Places…

Great to see Russ Ballard mentioned. He’s an incredible songwriter. I have a few of his ‘80s albums and one from 2006 that I love, not to mention songs he’s written that others have covered.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 8 месяцев назад

@@larrysmith5249 Good album for sure, his '76 album Winning is another really good one (he wrote that track which Santana covered so well). At He Third Strike is also good - even his 2020 It's Good To Be Here has nice moments. Argent is one of my all time fave prog bands, so underrated, their '74 album Nexus (still with Ballard) is a winner...and their Encore - Live In Concert

You mentioned Tommy Bolin above. I don't really need additional albums from 1974 but I'm considering picking up the album Miami by James Gang.

    • @wolf1977
      @wolf1977 8 месяцев назад +1

@@andymudrock322 I can pretty much guarantee that you wouldn't throw it away if you bought it😎. Not as good as the all time classic (and one of THE best 70's rock albums by anyone) Bang from '73 but 8 really good numbers on that one (skipping "Wildfire" & "Miami Two-Step"). This was right before joining DP, Bolin is credited with at least partial songwriting credits on every single track (a VERY good thing). "Sleepwalker" is an intense tune, and some of it sounds like additional material from Bolin's solo albums. Roy Kenner's vocals are excellent combined with Tommy's contributions, the great Tom Dowd on some keys...TBH I can't imagine any true Bolin fan not liking this album - a lot

    • @richardmay8153
      @richardmay8153 8 месяцев назад

@wolf1977 not to be a wet blanket... I assume you realize the 1974 solo material by Tommy Bolin was not released at that time, as you suggest. (Easy editing mistake.) They were released by his family in the nineties well after his death. (For the benefit of the three people that might read this.)
Better late than never, indeed. Great stuff all.

    My Day 4 Pick:
    Kiss (self-titled)
Yup, the album that started it all. It kicks off with a bang with "Strutter," and eventually ends in a bigger way with "Black Diamond." The only weak spot here, I think, is "Kissin' Time" - a track hated even by the band themselves. I absolutely dig "Nothin' to Lose," "Firehouse," "Deuce," and "100,000 Years." But my absolute favorite is the Ace Frehley-penned/Gene Simmons-sung "Cold Gin" - even with the irony kicking in, since Gene doesn't drink.
Their second best, in my personal opinion, after Love Gun.
    My January Picks (so far):
Day 1: Judas Priest - Rocka Rolla
Day 2: The Doobie Brothers - What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits
Day 3: Deep Purple - Burn
    Day 4: Kiss (self-titled)

Neil Young - On The Beach …🏖️
The album cover is one of the best. There is an umbrella and some chairs and Neil facing away from the camera on the beach with yellow color everywhere …and the rear of a 1959 Cadillac sticking out of the sand complete with red tail lights. Pretty cool !!!
This is part of the doom trilogy of records after the pop success of Harvest. It was released before “Tonight’s the Night” but recorded after. It’s pretty bleak stuff with Neil in a depressed state. It’s not the first record you want to listen to if you haven’t heard much Neil Young. But if you want to hear some gut wrenching rock music , you’ve stumbled onto the right album !!!
“Walk On” is a typical type of Young tune that starts it off. But it gets a little strange from here out.
The rest of side one is great. Many members of The Band and Crazy Horse contribute to the music.
But side 2 contains three astounding songs that will blow you away …if you have the stomach for it.
“On The Beach” is stunning in its delivery and powerful soundscape. It clocks in at 7:04 and worth every second of it.
“Moving Pictures” is about movies I guess. I love movies…got my popcorn ready. !!! 🍿
“Ambulance Blues” is very long at 8:57. It’s riveting and mysterious.
I’m being deliberately opaque here with very little actual content. It doesn’t matter really. Either you listen to it or you don’t. When I think of this album I get a little down in the gutter of life either way Neil…and it’s a fine wonderful place to be…!!!
This album is also remastered to perfection. It sounds stunning especially when compared with “Tonight’s the Night”…which has a very flat sort of a sound. But don’t get me wrong…both of these records are masterpieces. But then I have always loved anti radio non pop tunes that feature wrenching amplified dirge rock …Love it !!! Killer stuff folks…check it out and fill in the blanks yourself ……..????!!!!!

Deep Purple Burn is my chosen album nomination today. The first of the 2 mark 3 line up albums. If ever there was a statement of intent to say "We're back and firing on all cylinders with our new line up" it's the barnstorming title track, one of the greatest of all album openers to any hard rock album (and Purple had a good few storming album openers). One of Ritchie's best and most iconic riffs and both Hughes and the then new discovery Coverdale provide stunning vocal interplay. It's a different sound for Purple of course, with more blues and soul influences than mark 2 and more groove than before as evidenced on the likes of Might Just Take Your Life, Sail Away, the pacey You Fool No One and A 200. Then there's the stunning blues workout Mistreated featuring another iconic Blackmore riff and a superlative and emotive vocal from David Coverdale. Although the album heralds a change of direction for the band there are still enough reference points with the hard rocking nature of the material to hark back to the previous albums. With the subsequent album taking the band further into the realm of rnb and soul influenced rock and taking on a more laid back approach, Ritchie was gone, dissatisfied with its direction. However he still left us with this barnburner of a mid 70s Heavy rock album.

I won't be able to see what Pete's pick is until tomorrow afternoon due to a busy morning tomorrow, but for pick #28: Thin Lizzy's Nightlife. A lot of different moments in the Thin Lizzy discography could be chosen as far as where things truly get rolling depending on who you ask. I don't dislike any of their albums prior to Nightlife but this is the first album to me where things click, at least as someone who has only really been listening to their full albums for a few years now. Also, I've realized there were quite a few bands in 1974 who released multiple albums per year, and at the risk of cheating, I decided it's so much easier to combine those into one entry for the sake of adding variety.

    28. Steely Dan - Pretzel Logic (MCA)
It took a while for me to fully get on board with the Dan, even when I committed to buying a used box set in the 90s (guy behind me said, "All those CDs for one guitar solo? Dude." "Rikki Don't Lose That Number," for example was ubiquitous on FM radio growing up, and it was like part of the wallpaper. I didn't mind it, but nor did I ever spend a second thinking about them. That came later when I finally started listening to the albums. Nowadays their first eight albums are so highly regarded, it's hard to rank them. Currently this comes around fifth, but it shifts every few years. I often don't get around to playing them for a couple years, then go on a kick. This countdown inspired a new one.

Day 4: The self-titled debut by Kiss. Classic hard rock right here. The production isn't the best, but it gives these songs a raw feel. "Nothin' to Lose", "Firehouse" and "Cold Gin" are awesome, the latter two are even better live. One of the best moments on this album is the outro to "Let Me Know". "Love Theme from Kiss" is pretty out of place on the album, but it is interesting, as is their cover of "Kissin' Time", which is gloriously corny and over-the-top, but very fun. But my top 4 on this album has always been "Strutter", "Deuce", "100,000 Years" and "Black Diamond". The guitar solo at the end of "Deuce", killer. The bass on "100,000 Years", killer. And I also think it's perfect that "Love Theme from Kiss" is right before it. And "Black Diamond", with the acoustic intro, Peter Criss' vocals, the guitar solo, and finally ending with the tape slowing down. What a way to go out. Frehley's guitar and Criss' drumming was always my favorite part of early Kiss, but the band kicked ass all throughout the 70s.

Hi Pete. My pick today is CRIME OF THE CENTURY by SUPERTRAMP. My intro to this band was the single Dreamer, which broke them in the UK, but very soon this album was one that everyone at college was playing. Dramatic title track (that instrumental break is magical) and I've always loved Bloody Well Right. But probably the track I relate to most is Hide In Your Shell - as I used to be a bit shy and mixed up!
Terrific choice of yours, and I agree about Rikki Don't Lose That Number.

    4) Al Green - Explores Your Mind
This album is Al Green's coup de gras. There is not a bad song on here. The deep emotion in every word carries you away, the music is timeless. Al's inimitable smooth Southern Soul vocalizing is backed by the masterful playing of the Hi Records house band under the direction of the incomparable Willie Mitchell, resulting in the unique Memphis Soul sound.
Of course, the big highlight here is the hefty funk groove of "Take Me To The River", that later on Talking Heads would discover and reimagine. The urban tribute, "The City" and the yearning "Stay With Me Forever", actually take the uptown Soul shuffle of the Motown sound of the 1960s, take a little of the polish off of it, allowing the upbeat and melodic Gospel/Soul roots of the sound to come through. "One Night Stand" is a powerful and sensual groove, as is the hit single "Sha-La-La (Make Me Happy)", and the steamier "Hangin' On". The most beautiful songs on the album are the gorgeous, Gospel-rooted "God Bless Our Love", and the album closer, the quiet, reflective "School Days", that looks back to the '50s and early '60s for its more innocent feeling.
Al Green's sound was able to transcend its time, and inspire other artists, even after his peak period seemed to be behind him. It was largely the records from those years, such as, Explores Your Mind that did that. And it's what makes this album truly timeless.

STANLEY CLARKE- STANLEY CLARKE- no it’s not MO or RTF, it’s SC and he brings with it his take on fusion led bass which still cuts it 50 years later. I even like the much criticised vocals on Yesterday Princess, which of course were a feature of his first album Children of Forever. Stellar supporting cast of musicians also helps Clarke shine. The 72 year old Clarke is still making some great sounds. Another artist from 1974 ,who fifty years later, can be added to the pantheon of aging and still delivering musicians. Age is no barrier to greatness as Pete demonstrated by putting Mick Box at the top of his releases of 2023.

Good album but didn't quite make my list (and I'm a jazz/rock fusion guy). There was always something about the solo Clarke albums that didn't quite totally click with me - I think it's the songwriting. There are definitely some high points & the playing's obviously top-notch. I prefer his later team-ups such as on Vertu (with Lenny White/Richie Kotzen) or The Rite Of Strings (with Ponty & DiMeola). His 2010 s/t album is pretty good - for me probably as good as this one. For '74 Fusion I'd pick RTF's Where Have I Known You Before ahead of this one (Clarke/White/DiMeola with Chick)

For me, it's Bill Connors' playing that puts this album way up there for me. His solo on Life Suite is one for the ages....it's starts out very subtle, builds and burns slowly into a fiery assault. A masterpiece of improvisation. @@wolf1977

Great choice Pete! Underrated track is Parker’s Band to my mind - what a rhythm section groove as mentioned in the lyrics. ‘where did you get those shoes?’ double down from Donald in Prezel Logic so perfect! The funky Monkey in your Soul, and everything else. Snarky intellectual lyric rants throughout! The melting Skunk solo in Ricki….Happy almost birthday Pete!

BTO - Not Fragile - In a 1995 interview, Randy Bachman indicated that he thought that using the word "fragile" as a title for a rock album, as Yes had done with their 1971 album Fragile, was "strange." He thought that BTO music could be "dropped and kicked" without breaking, so, without intending any commentary about Yes, the band "tongue-in-cheek" called their next album Not Fragile.
The album marks the debut of guitarist Blair Thornton, who, unlike his predecessor Tim Bachman, is billed on the album liner notes as "second lead guitar". Thornton's dual-guitar work with Randy Bachman is a prominent feature on many Not Fragile tracks. "Roll On Down the Highway" and "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" were hit singles, with the latter hitting No. 1 on the Canadian and US singles charts in November 1974, receiving GOLD certification by the RIAA. Other cuts had significant airplay on FM rock radio. The album produced the only BTO singles to chart in the United Kingdom. "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" hit No. 2 on the UK charts in November 1974, and "Roll On Down the Highway" hit the No. 22 position in January 1975.
"You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" was a leftover track that was not originally intended to be included on Not Fragile. It was only after Charlie Fach of Mercury Records heard the other eight tracks, and did not see hit single potential in any of them, that he asked if the band had anything else he could hear. They played him the leftover track and he assured them it was more radio-friendly than any of the others, convincing the band to add it to the album.
The Not Fragile album contains the only instrumental track in BTO's discography, a Blair Thornton composition called "Free Wheelin'". This track would appear as the B-side to the "You Ain't Seen Nothing Yet" single.
Not Fragile has gone on to achieve triple platinum status. Randy Bachman has called it the band's "crowning achievement," stating: "Not Fragile was when it all came together for us. We captured the album-oriented rock audience as well as the singles audience with that album. Not Fragile made BTO recognized around the world."

    Honorable Mention:
    Jon Lord... Windows
P-Funk's major label debut for Casablanca Records. This is before the spaceships and giant roach clips.
This is where P-Funk started to get commercial with the hit title track here. This is essential funk music. Blows away my prior pick of the Ohio Players.
Anybody else has a whistling solo like track five here, I Just Got Back....?
Jon Lord gets another classical/rock piece out in-between the two 1974 Deep Purple albums.
He brings in the two Deep Purple singers at the time, future Whitesnake boss David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes. As well as future P.A.L. partner Tony Ashton and Ian Gillan Band guitarist Ray Fenwick.
This is more raucous music than one would anticipate. Cool.

Today’s pick is possibly the greatest Heavy Blues album of all time: Bridge of Sighs by Robin Trower. What can I even say about this one that hasn’t been said a thousand times before? Trower’s guitar and Dewar’s vocals were a Blues match made in heaven that, in my opinion, hasn’t been topped since. Every single song on this album is fantastic, from the high-energy “Day of the Eagle” to more somber songs like the title track and “In This Place,” to the powerful “Too Rolling Stoned.” This is a perfect album to my ears, and definitely a top album of 1974.
