First I apologize for a comment that is a year later, but I figured this story would be one you might be able to appreciate. I was deployed to Egypt as a part of a joint allied training exercise back in 2007. At the area we did training there was a line of flags of all the countries that were participating. In the middle was the flag of the United States and Egypt, with others such as UK, Italy, and quite a few others. I was on the night shift, so it was usually quite dark and in that time of the year there was no wind and it was chilly at night. In the morning the sun would rise and usually a fog would roll through.
There was a particular morning that stood out at me. The fog had rolled in a bit earlier but like most nights there was no wind or anything. When the fog had spread thin enough we were able to see the flag poles. The American flag was flying while the others were drooping as there was no wind. The reason our flag was flying is because it was stuck on the top of an adjacent flagpole. No other flags were stuck in the same way.
Again there was no wind that evening. There was also no way for those flags to be tampered without us being able to hear it. But it was definitely a sight to see under the morning daylight. Here's a picture I took: cdn.discordapp.com/attachments/673432780105056257/1159716343453589544/image.png

The flag is very important to us. The US is home to people from many different countries. The flag is recognizable to everyone and has been a rallying point throughout our history. The stripes represent the original 13 colonies and each star represents a state. We have a list of flag etiquette. Examples are the flag may not touch the ground and it’s folded into a triangle with the blue field showing. When I was in the Navy the flag was raised on a flagpole at sunrise and lowered at sunset. Everyone, all ranks, were required to face the flag and salute while the flag was in motion.

Burning the flag or kneeling during the national anthem is what people gave their lives for. I remember when my cousin from Poland came and saw the show little Bush. And could not believe that they would allow that on television. making fun of a politician, especially in Communist Poland would have gotten you thrown in jail. this country is very special because we have the freedom of speech and whether you like what someone has to say and agree with it. Or whether you revile it, you still are free to say it. It is easy to stand behind something. Someone says that you agree with and call yourself someone who believes in freedom of speech. it is a lot more difficult to allow someone to say things you hate or completely disagree with Because that is a person who has the spirit of what it means to be truly free in his or her heart. I wish they would teach history as accurately and fairly as possible. I wish our country would stand as unified patriots again but, even as someone in their 20s, I don’t know if I’ll ever get the chance to witness such a time. My generation is full of degenerates and those who aren’t are drowned out by those with disgustingly loud voices preaching about inequality and unfairness in a nation that is constantly trying to adjust policies to be more fair; a nation where its very soul protects their right to disrespect it. Because of such people in my generation, I have no idea how I’m supposed to face my ancestors who fought for our freedom, for the dream and belief that was and hopefully still is the United States of America. Turd Ferguson, please don’t cry, 95% of the video that the Korean couple is referring to is FALSE. There was no prisoner ship with “cargo holds full of men”, Key was negotiating for the release of ONE person; Dr. William Beanes, a civilian Prisoner of War, who was tending to injured British Sailors. Key did not witness the bombardment, he was held below decks on a ship some distance from the ‘battle. The British Fleet consisted of 19 ships, 16 of which were warships, and they were 2 miles away from Ft. McHenry, the very limit of their mortars, and out of cannon range. There was a total of 4 American dead and 22 injured, and 1 British death. The flag was hit once or twice, there were two holes in the flag after the battle. The flagpole was not hit, a British round landed near the base, causing it to lean. Key emerged onto the main deck after the battle was over to see the Garrison Flag flying, which was normal every morning for Revele.
With all that being said, ‘The Star Spangled Banner’ always brings me to tears, but not from the exaggerated story, but for all those (American, Canadian, British, French, Australian, Korean, Vietnamese…need I go on?)who gave their lives in times of senseless war to insure the freedom of others.

The 50 stars are the states in the union, the 13 stripes are the original colonies when we formed as a country, and the red stripes generally represent the blood of battle while the white is the purity of the nation. We get a lot wrong as a country, as many do, but one thing we got right is the communal togetherness in extreme times. My grandfather came to South Korea back when the north was trying to take over. Many years later, my uncle flew my grandfather to Seoul to visit and see what it looked like now. Someone must have told somebody important that my grandfather was a marine that fought there because when they got off the plane and into the airport, people were standing there clapping and shaking grandpas hand. It shocked grandpa and my uncle. He was always happy about that.

I visited Seoul a few years ago, and one of the most touching things I’ve ever encountered in my life was a statement on a wall at the Korean War museum (which flew the flags of many nations out front) that read in Korean and English, “Our nation honors her sons and daughters who answered the call to defend a country they never knew and a people they never met.” How beautiful, that people would fight and sacrifice for humanity regardless of borders, and how beautiful the gratitude returned.

As an American, born and raised, I thank you for making this video. It seems that the majority of the world doesn't or won't understand why Americans are the way we are. Why we are so proud as a nation, why we hold to our ideals the way we do. We are often hated or ridiculed for it.
I know we have made a great many mistakes on our path, many of them grievous and unforgivable. We've been the bad guy, at times. I know that. At the time, we didn't realize we were being the bad guy. Sometimes you don't know until 5, 10, 20 or 50 years later. But we're learning, adapting. America is the largest and longest running social experiment in the world. We're not always going to get it right. But we try. Most of us strive for greatness every day, setting an example for the world to follow whether we are aware of it or not.
I served in the US Army infantry. It's been over 10 years since I medically discharged. Even so, I had held our countries ideals in higher regard than many other Americans. Still do. Yet, I had forgotten this story. Thank you for sharing it and reminding me. Yes, I cried during this video. All I ever wanted was to be just a fraction of what those men holding up the flag that night were. And I only hope that I can raise my son with the same pride of country that those men had that night.

The British used guns on the fort that were impossible to be accurate enough to hit the flag, even if they had TRIED to aim for it. They weren't aiming for the flag at all, but rather the fort's cannons that were keeping the fleet from passing by. Also, there were no civilians in the fort, just soldiers. So, no one was holding up the flag. 24 soldiers were wounded in the fort and only four others died.

As a descendant of soldiers in every American conflict including both sides of the civil war, this song moves me profoundly and even as I listened to this I stood at salute facing my American flag. That's what we fight for, both civilians and military. Our brothers and sisters at home and abroad, but more importantly the rights that flag represents and the blood that was spilled to make this nation what it is. It's not perfect but we live in a society so plentiful, so enriched by freedom that we have young people burning that flag in the streets and they don't fear execution as they would in say north Korea. It IS absolutely against the law to burn that flag and I'm ashamed of the law enforcement that doesn't uphold that law but I know they think it's their right to do so and disrespect the millions that have perished under that flag. I don't think they should be allowed to but they live in such a free land that they don't suffer consequences for doing so. This country needs to get back to teaching it's youth to be proud of our American heritage. Good and bad. Because it's the tapestry that has woven the fabric of the most powerful and sometimes most prosperous nation in the world. We hope the participants in this video are stateside and have been welcomed into this tapestry to be Americans themselves.

Yes, the American flag is important to most of us Americans. However, I view it as a symbol for so much more than just our country. One of those things it symbolizes (although it's currently been under threat), is the freedom of speech/expression; even if it is a citizen who protests by "desecrating" the flag or vehemently disagreeing with our Constitution, laws, leaders, elected officials, etc. We are allowed to criticize & mock; even offend.
There are limitations such as we _not_ allowed to threaten the health & welfare of persons &/property, incite riots, commit perjury, etc. I can live with that.

What's sad to me is that even most Americans aren't aware that our national anthem has more than one verse, and the others are just as important and beautiful. I'll paste them here in case somebody's curious. There's even an inspiring unofficial 5th verse that was written during the civil war. My family makes sure to sing all the verses at least once a year on the 4th of July. I hope it can inspire someone today.
    2. On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep
Where the foe's haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o'er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning's first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream,
'Tis the star-spangled banner - O long may it wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
    3. And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has wash'd out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
    4. O thus be it ever when freemen shall stand
Between their lov'd home and the war's desolation!
Blest with vict'ry and peace may the heav'n rescued land
Praise the power that hath made and preserv'd us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto - "In God is our trust,"
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.
    5. When our land is illum'd with Liberty's smile,
If a foe from within strike a blow at her glory,
Down, down, with the traitor that dares to defile
The flag of her stars and the page of her story!
By the millions unchain'd who our birthright have gained
We will keep her bright blazon forever unstained!
And the Star-Spangled Banner in triumph shall wave
While the land of the free is the home of the brave.

This specific story shows that people are willing to sacrifice themselves for freedom so the future can benefit from change. A few other American songs you may like are Lee Greenwood “God Bless the USA” and Toby Keith “Courtesy of the Red, White, and Blue”, Toby Keith’s song was done after 9/11 and he toured army bases and sang this sing to the military men and women. Thanks again! God bless you!

Carolyn Coppola, please understand that 95% of the narrator’s story is FALSE. Francis Scott Key was negotiating for the release of ONE person, Dr. William Beanes, a civilian Prisoner of War, who was tending to injured British Sailors. He did not witness the bombardment, as he was held below decks during the battle, he emerged the following morning to see the Garrison Flag flying, as was normal for Revele every morning. The British Fleet consisted of 19 ships, 16 of which were Warships, none of the ships were Prisoner Ships with “Cargo holds full of men”. The British Fleet was 2 miles away, as the Americans had blocked entry to the harbor with 22 sunken ships, therefore the British mortars were at their absolute limit, and the cannons were out of range of Fort McHenry. The British mortars were not very accurate. The accuracy was further diminished due to heavy rain, and the rolling seas caused by firing said mortars. The Storm Flag flying during the battle was hit once, maybe twice, as there were two holes in after the battle. It was on display at the Smithsonian Museum of History, and still may be. The flagpole was never hit, a British round landed near the base, causing it to tilt. American casualties were 4 dead and 22 injured, so there were no piles of dead Patriots holding the flagpole up.
With that being said, “The Star Spangled Banner” always brings me to tears, but not due to the grossly exaggerated story presented. It brings me to tears due to the countless men and women who have given their lives to protect the freedom of others in senseless wars.

So this story is kind of inaccurate, yes the British wanted to take Baltimore and the fort, yes they bombed the fort for twenty five hours, yes that flag got hell shot out of it, but because of each side being outside of effective range of their weapons and had poor accuracy and the fort being recently improved meant very little damage was done.
The Americans only lost 4 people. Yeah the strongest fleet in the world at the time bombed a stationary fort for an entire day and killed only 4 defenders plus an unlucky civilian helping with supplies and wounded 24 others.
I don't know who this speaker is but he's not telling the truth or didn't pay attention in history class and likes to listen to himself talk.
If you guys read the description in the original video the poster even says the info in the video is inaccurate.

The original video seems to be from a religious speech (here they edited the blessing at the end of the clip that mentions America is strong... when it's under God). Not to mention the constant references to christian behaviour throught the story (like in the quote from George Washington and what the "prisioners" do).
As for the bombarding failure... 19 ships is still quite some force (at least in numbers); and, at the time, night operations were not a regular thing. We can assume the british were not exactly trying to "blow the fort out of the face of earth" (as the admiral in the video says), but rather stress it (and if they hit it, the better).
By the way... did you know the attack had a second part that included taking the fort by land/with a landing party? As with the shelling, those attempts didn't succed.
