You're not understanding that it was a different time. Honor, integrity, self determination, freedom, they weren't just words to these people. They lived it. And we've sadly lost that.
no, we ... the Veterans, have not lost that. some never learned it. and sadly, with the downfall of boys clubs, girls clubs, scouting and organizations that have been demonized ... many will never develop that sense of service to their communities, and I fear fewer will become soldiers and learn that service to our Great Nation.
The story of William billy Lee is awesome too. A true hero. George Washington needed fresh horses and billy rode with him throughout the war. That was 7 years of riding a horse everyday. Talk about determination and resilience
If the flag hit the ground, it would mean we surrendered. This is the reason you NEVER let the flag touch the ground. People fought and died for our freedom. I hope some day this will be sung in schools again. Our kids need to hear this video.
They don't sing or teach the star spangle banner in schools anymore !?!??!! Why. I know I hear they don't say the pledge of allegiance anymore I think because it has the word God in it but I'm not sure. All though elementary school we did this every morning ..every morning.
The point is we stand and die on our feet not on our knees an 100s of Patriots die held the flag up for a day an night the truth is yes that flag went dawn doing every hit but because so much smoke the British did not see after the smoke clear the flag was being hold up by 20 or 30 men but I think of 24hours over 100 men die all holding that flag until there was dead.. So never kneel against that flag or your jusy Surender that FLAG to all that hate an your not a American Patriort. It's nice I bet if someone could show this True HISTORY about our National American Anthem history I bet those that Thart so bad about our nation or was the Wones that kneel against the flag will be so move an will never allow that FLAG to fall an will stand proudly an as American Patriots will stand for this Nation FIRST an now know the truth will be change for ever.. I wish in a baseball game or football or NASCAR or Hockey game or a event is happing with so many people to have this story live an I know all would just stop doing what ever an watch this in silent an I bet when all is hearing this first time will start tearing up then in the end when it's singing comes on I bet u will see all American PATRIOTS rise an Stand up Proud just listing the song I bet then all that will change how they feel about this nation an be truly American Citzens Patriots and be proud to be it... GOD BLIST THIS NATION AGAIN..
During the Obama admin it was starting to get bad. I was mentoring high school students that were having difficulty in school during my limited time off and some of those teachers in my old high school tried blocking me from entering the school not because I might be a security risk but because they had issue with my USN dress blue and summer working white uniform worn by all officers in the USN today.
I am Native American. I am the daughter/wife/mother of veterans!!! I've learned that our family has been fighting from day 1, and even though we lost, we still fight for this country!!
I'm a mix. I pass for white because I'm blue eyed and pale skinned. I came out looking like my daddy. But I have jet black thick hair. My maternal grandfather was from Carolina. 1/4 black and half Cherokee. He married my grandmother, who was a blonde headed, blue eyed, white girl in Alabama in the 1930's. I know many atrocities were committed in the past by every side but I'm also a US Marine! Infantry! I've fought shoulder to shoulder with Americans from New York Italians to Massachusetts Irish to California Hispanics to Montana Indians to Georgia and Mississippi black men and Tennessee hillbilly crackers! We were all brothers! It's NOT "this" country! It's OUR country! God bless you and God bless America!
I was born and raised in Alabama. Most folks, just looking at me, consider me a white guy. I'm pale and have blue eyes but truth is my great grandfather was from Carolina. He was half Cherokee and half black. He was so tall he'd have to bend his head to walk through a doorway! He fought in WW 1. After the war he moved to Alabama and married my great grandmother (a blonde haired, blue eyed, white woman and the daughter of the Bibb County sheriff) in the 1920's! In Alabama! And got away with it! He was one helluva man! I joined the Marine Corps and went to Iraq in 02 right after 9/11. Lost my right eye and got an ugly scar on my head but proud to be an American and proud of my Big PawPaw! I was 13 years old in 93' and he was 93 years old. I miss that old man! RIP Willard Jackson 1900 to 1993 It's not a white man's country nor a black man's country nor a red man's country nor a yellow man's country nor a brown man's country. It's OUR country!!! My daddy was a fiery, redheaded white man and we could pass for identical twins if not for my hair. Every morning when I wake and look in the mirror I see my white face and blue eyes but my jet black, semi-afro reminds me of my Big PawPaw! It’s a complicated thing with conflicting emotions. Though I don’t love all the government has done through its history I respect the sacrifice and still care for our people. Don’t have to love our government to care for our nation and people

I'm British, and I didn't know the story behind the lyrics. It's a deeply moving song, and everyone in the US should be proud of those brave men and women who died that night. So glad we're all friends now. God bless America, and God bless Great Britain.
Ok, I read a few comments below and realized that quite a few Americans don't know their history. This story is embellished. This is The War of 1812. The Brits had just put fire to the white house and came down to put fire to Baltimore. They attacked the city with ground troops but were halted by the city defenses. So they decided to send a fleet of 20 small and large ships(not hundreds) to go up the river to the dockside and attack. Had to pass Ft Henry First. The fort was held by 1000 US Troops (unknown civilians). Remember we are a nation at this time, for about 50yrs. Out of that 6 were killed(soldiers)and civilians unknown. They fail to take the fort. The quote that Washington said is actually credited to the Mexican revolutionary Zapata and his men yelling it as they were gunned down by the Federals(look it up). The mission the doctor was on was to get the release of a well-liked doctor who was on those prison ships. He wrote the poem of the national anthem, but it did not become our national anthem til around the mid-1930s. When the lyrics were added. The pastor who narrated and put this all together was called out on his, let's say exaggerations? He has since made a second explaining his video, but what it comes down to is a "what if in your imagination" type explanation. OOH! I almost forgot. Yes, I do love this country. I served in the military like most in my family. I just don't dilute myself, understanding we aren't perfect.
Wow! This is amazing! As a black American who served in the Military seeing this makes me proud to be an American. I love my country! However, it is a shame that so many people take for granted how God has blessed us and how our kids are being taught to hate this blessed land. It we don't stand up and love our country we will loose it. Pray for our country, God Bless America!
Now I understand why we try so hard to not let the flag touch the ground. Because these patriots held it up all night. Thank you for sharing. God bless the USA! 🇺🇸
All the tears at the Super Bowl, while Chris Stapleton sang this song, are from the heart. Freedom isn't Free. Canadians are learning this the hard way.

@Paige Gee your lineage is very long and strong mine is similar. grandson, son, nephew, cousin, father and uncle. i am also a veteran myself. my daughter and youngest nephew both joined the US ARMY last october. tell your family thank you for their many years of service
@uncletoy please extend my gratitude to you and yours for all you do/did. And thank you for your love of our country and to help lay the very blanket of freedom that so many take for granted.
I’m a 63 year old white guy who served our country for 29 years in the Army. Quite frankly, with the direction our country has been going, I’ve wondered why I served at all. You guys give me hope! Keep learning and keep up the good work!
You served for GREAT reasons. I still have my freedom today because of men like you. We need a strong military today in order to protect those freedoms that especially the younger generation doesn't respect, or value. You never know what you have until it's gone, after all. And we will NOT let it go! The American people will fight, even if it means fighting our own government and military. That's why we have our 2A right. As the government becomes more and more tyrannical, we value our 2nd Amendment even more.
You served our country, how dare you. You have a country because these man gave their lives to make sure that flag did not touch the ground because they knew what that would mean. I come from a military family. Shame on you. 😥😥😥😥😥😥
@@happygus1304 Its their right, lets ask why they dont want to stand, and maybe have a discussion about it. So that they too can be proud of being an American.
I was an ignorent foreigner that found it weird that you pledge allegiance to a flag a piece of fabric. Untill i saw this and i understood the meaning of why the flag was so important. It was standing up for something you believe in no matter the cost and that is honorable and eventhough i'm not american this gets me every time i see this God bless.
Unfortunately this video is propaganda and not history. Only 4 people died at the fort. There was no pile of bodies holding up the flag. Also, Washington never said anything about the "American Christian would rather die on his feet than live on his knees." There's nothing patriotic about spreading, or believing, lies. Please get your history from reputable sources and not from RUclips. RUclips is where intelligence goes to die.
@@bf5175 “I'll die on my feet before I'll live on my knees!” - George Washington (*often attributed to Washington, but cannot be confirmed.) and what if he is not the one that said this first, the meaning is more important. @I’ve got questions - that’s the definition of ignorance. And it’s still ridiculous to pledge allegiance to a piece of fabric, especially when you claim to be of a judeo-Christian faith, where practicing idolatry is frowned upon.
@@brynneholt1990 how i see it now is that the flag stands for a free America where God is leading and the rights that God gave the Americans is symbolically connected to that flag. So what's the fuss.
true story my grandfather told all of us and those who would listen. It was dramatic, for life for freedom! Proud! Thank you for showing!🙏💪You all singing at the end really got me🥹😊
Gentlemen this story is very true. It happened during the War of 1812. It is well documented. The actual flag is under glass on display. It's HUGE! Many of our anthems and hymns are written from personal experiences. They give tours of the Fort McHenry where this battle took place. It is very true. Sadly, hardly any of our American history is taught accurately in our schools. You should check out pictures on line of this Fort and the flag. 😊
Go to the Smithsonian and see the flag. It was one of the incredible times of my life. Don't take anyone's word for it. Learn history. Not just what the left has been telling you for years, then make your own decisions on what you take the time to know for yourselves.
it was actually a poem that he wrote. We took the words and put it to music. personally, my favorite verse is the last. we have a lot of faults in this country but we have a lot of good, too....And we have shared it with other countries.
This story as told is pure Bullfeathers. The battle happened, but the rest of what this wight-wing white nationalist minister doing the narration is pure lies. Washing ton never spoke that quote, a Mexican did, and it had nothing to do with the USA, and there were no women and children in Fort McHenry.

you mean instead of kneel for the flag? like the football players trying to say? the saying in this by Mr. Francise key, was "we will die standing". so this is why kneeling is actually a disgrace! people need to know this truth of our national anthem and how we got our song, not just memorize the words and singing it out of memory not knowing what the song really means! we sang this in schools across America for generations, and we were never ever taught this!
@@Laiinkyree There was an experiment in china, to see how they would react to the flag on the ground at a door way...They respected the flag more than our athletes do. As a combat vet I've had brothers buried under this flag. We maintain that mentality to this day, hold that flag to the last man. Duty first service always.
Absolutely! When the whole "kneeling" thing started it made me so angry! My dad joined the Air Force at 15 with a doctored birth certificate. By 16, he was in Germany for the end of WW2. He stayed in 24 years, through Korea & early Vietnam. I told people then, "One day that flag will cover my dad's coffin. If that were the ONLY reason to respect it, THAT would be enough!" He passed away in 2020 & indeed that Flag DID cover his coffin. It was then folded by 2 Airmen & handed to me by a 3rd while 3 others fired their rifles in salute. That was the saddest & the proudest moment of my life at the same time. God bless you for your service & May God bless America always 🇺🇸❤️
@@HollerMa71 Yes, that kneeling bs, angered me as well. It’s utterly disgusting! I thank you and your Dad for your service as well. That same flag just draped my Grandpa’s casket, too. May God bless you and yours always. 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
My dad as a 21 yr old Marine watched that flag go up on Mt. Suribachi and even as an old man he would struggle to his feet when this song played. God bless you young men for playing this.
In the USMC, over the 8 years I spent in active duty, we were trained to have the utmost respect for that flag. Always rendering a salute, never allowing the colors to touch the ground and presenting all fallen veterans' families with a folded flag for the service their loved one paid to their country. Amazing how much disrespect is shown to that flag. To all my patriots who still stand with their hand over their hearts when this song is played and to all my fellow Marines, Semper Fi.

My American military husband brought me to America. I didn't speak English, but in time I taught myself. When I understood the words to the American Anthem, I cried over the bravery of those patriots. Knowing they would get killed holding the Flag up, they help it up proudly. They had no desire to live under British rule. The courage it took made me cry. I still cry every time I heat it. I hold my right hand over my heart and cry. To me it's the most beautiful song. I salute all military personal past and present. Thank you America for allowing me to live here in this awesome country. God bless America and my homeland Germany. I will always respect the Flag and the American law. I'm a proud Texan now.
You and my aunt have basically the same coming to America backstory. My Uncle a US Marine met his wife a Korean woman while on his way back to the United States from a tour in Vietnam as a Force Recon Marine and on his stop in Korea he saw this beautiful young 19 year old girl and he was 21 and he fell in love lol. They married and he promised her he would come back to get her and she believed him and he kept his word. When he returned however long it was they married and came back to America and they’ve been married to this day. She learned to speak English and she became a citizen and my aunt is the funniest person you will ever meet and she was so proud when she became a United States Citizen. God Bless you and your true patriotic American husband and thank you for his service to the greatest nation on the planet! 🇺🇸🇺🇸
@@Joyc1956 Hi Joyc1956. Do you speak German? I consider myself a Texan now. Lived here for quite some time. Texas has always been good to me. The people here are so friendly and helpful. I don't have one bad word about Texas.
This is a true story. It’s when America was fighting for all the freedoms so many take for granted. England was the world power at this time. It was called “The British Empire” for a reason. Their military was strong, and they still lost the war. This video is not just explaining the words to this song, but it’s how much these patriots believed in this country from the beginning. I liked your reactions to this bit of American history. I pray we can be united, and realize that we are all Americans. We are more alike than we are different.
Britain didn't lose the war (War of 1812). It was a draw. Britain Kept Canada land ( Canada is bigger land than the US). Remember the war started once the US attacked British Canada in order to avenge the British naval blockade in the Atlantic. Still a huge feat by the Americans to draw up with a superpower ( without much French help this time as in during the Revolutionary war). The British attacked and almost took New Orleans in the South. The US had to enlist some Haitian soldiers to help fight the British. Haitian Offc Joseph Savary was the first black officer in the US military. He was recruited to fight the British during the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. Look him up, interesting story..
As a disabled Marine, it should now be obvious to most why so many Americans became disgusted and upset at the site of athletes taking a knee. For my family, who have served in all the 20th century battles, it was appalling. Nice job on the reaction guys.
Jim, you’re taking it all wrong. I don’t blame you because those with an ulterior motive told you it was disrespectful and you believed them. Look at it another way. The way it was meant to be taken by those who did it. Taking a knee is a sign of respect. Respect for our country. It was also meant as a message from those who felt they were being discriminated against. Not by the flag or our country as a whole, but by those people in our country who, because they held positions of authority, passed laws that deliberately kept a certain segment of our society from enjoying all the rights and freedoms meant for every citizen here, not just some. This is the absolute truth, and it has been deliberately hidden from you by those who don’t want you to know. Here’s an example: Did you know that when our brave soldiers returned from fighting WW2, simply because of the color of their skin, our black and brown solders were denied the right to access the benefits of the GI Bill? That bill allowed returning soldiers to buy homes, attend college, and start businesses. Because the black and brown soldiers were denied those funds, funds they earned by fighting for the US in WW2, they were left poorer and less educated in comparison to their white brothers. And that’s only one example of the unfairness built into our system. That unfairness is what taking the knee was trying to point out, and the message was lost because some people decided to be insulted instead of honestly looking at the reasons for it. Taking a knee has always been meant as a show of respect. We take a knee in church, before kings and queens, and to honor heroes. It was never meant to be disrespectful.
I understand how it was viewed as disrespectful by some. But there are countries in the world where someone doing that in a public venue against their government could actually be imprisoned, maybe executed. As Americans we need to value freedom of expression, give voice to the voiceless. Athletes taking a knee, we may not agree, but that is one of the things that make our country great, that people have the ability to express themselves, one of the things you fought for. Just my two cents.
First, Thank You for your service. Real men love, respect and serve. ❤🇺🇸🫡 Why are you proud of these men? They started off listening, then became disruptive, disrespectful and disappointing. They have acted like juvenile delequents in the 10th grade. Through to the end. 😞❤🇺🇸
In 2009 my daughter at the young age of 22 became a widow. Her husband-Lance Corporal Jordan Chrobot, a US Marine was killed in action in Afghanistan. I will always love and honor our flag because it represents the land of the free and the home of the brave- the BRAVE that fought to keep it FREE.
I am truly sorry for your daughters loss, but what does this fabricated story have to do with honor or freedom? And while I have family enlisted and always have and always will support the troops, do you really think our troops were over in Afghanistan for freedom? What's the difference between us going into Afghanistan for 20ys, and what Russian is attempting now to do in Ukraine? The ONLY difference is Afghanistan isn't our neighbor, and we have a military that's not falling apart, in fact it's so powerful, that no one else in the world had the balls or the military to put sanctions on the U.S. for doing our imperialistic think in the middle east for 2 decades. As far as freedom, we fell to 24th last year on the international freedom index scale, so countries like Taiwan, Czech Republic, Australia and 20 other countries have more freedom than the U.S.
My real dad's father had to shot one of his own second to the oldest brother in WW2 in Normandie and his oldest brother on D-Day. All my grandfather cause do was cry and ask himself why. When I found out that was the reason why my grandfather never talked about WW2. I would go and hug him and tell I would not be here if he did do his job. And he would just smile and your right JJ.
This was written during the War of 1812. The return of the British to take back the territory won in the Revolutionary War. Now that you have heard the story, the meaning of the song, the belief in keeping the flag from touching the ground, and the sacrifices made to keep this country a nation is all the more important.
@@BestKCL You can see the garrison flag of Fort McHenry in the Smithsonian Museum of American History. The bombardment lasted for 24 or 25 hours. The Battle of Baltimore, I believe, was when the fort was engaged. This flag didn't fly over the fort throughout the battle, because there was a rainstorm during the siege. A smaller flag, known as a storm flag, flew over the fort. The garrison flag was hoisted at dawn, "By the dawn's early light", as the British withdrew to celebrate the victory which inspired Francis Key to pen the poem. You guys do a great job with your reactions. It is inspiring to hear all of your perspectives on sensitive topics. I’m like you though, I don’t know how many times in my life I’ve felt tears flow freely and quietly when I heard our National Anthem at sports games. I taught it to my eldest during our state's shutdown. I learned about it during my Civics class she was a wonderful teacher. It was a requirement for us to enter high-school.
This goes back to the War of 1812, when we were fighting the British. Francis Scott Key wrote it as a poem first. Written on the back of an envelope as he watched the bombing of Ft. McHenry by British ships. It became known as The Battle of Baltimore. The flag in the song is the flag that flew over Ft. McHenry, and it was still standing after the battle was over and the British retreated. Every elementary school kid in Baltimore has been to Ft. McHenry on a school trip. It's a National Monument and Historic Site now, and you can still visit.

@Chuck4TNvols actually the British were retaliating after American forces stormed across your border to the north with British North America. Your Gov declared war against Britain to stop the impressment of US sailors into the British navy and to stop the naval blockade of American shipments to France. The burning of your White House and Atlanta was in direct response to the burning of Niagara and York in Upper Canada. American ass was kicked from the northern border down to Atlanta and the British were not stopped until the battle of New Orleans. By that time a peace treaty had already been signed. God bless the greatest country of all time. Your country of America from a Canadian who loves the USA!!
@@Webber105 First off,you need a history lesson on the cause for the War of 1812.The two leading causes of the war were the British Orders-in-Council, which limited American trade with Europe, and impressment, the Royal Navy's practice of taking seamen from American merchant vessels to fill out the crews of its own chronically undermanned warships. We didn't have a Governor,we had a President of our United States.same as we do now,and on June 17, 1812, the Senate approved a House-passed resolution declaring war with Great Britain, with three amendments, by a vote of 19-13. President James Madison signed it into law the following day.The British were seizing merchant ships, that is one of the aggressions which resulted in the act of war declared by our Senate and signed by the the President and on December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent officially ended the War of 1812, but the delayed news couldn't stop nearly 1,000 British troops from being killed at the Battle of New Orleans. We declared war for good reason and it was mainly the aggression their massive Navy that even gave reason for the war.The burning of Atlanta never happened in the war of 1812,it was burned down duiring the Civil War in 1864 after the Union had pretty much cut off all the South's supply line and had basically won the war, still decided to burn or destroy everything from Atlanta to Savannah. The Union victory in the largest battle of the Atlanta Campaign led to the capture of that critical Confederate city and opened the door for Maj. Gen. William T. Sherman's most famous operation-the March to the Sea and the capture of Savannah. This is all history, good with the bad,no one now is to blame for our ancestors decisions. What makes the USA so great is the fact we won't take any nonsense or aggression from anyone, that is the only thing that all Americans have in common with our fore fathers.God Bless The USA!
This is how it happened, I'm sure there is some dramatic flair but the facts are here. I am 51 and learned this in American history as a kid. It actually happened. We learned how the song was written after this also. It is 💯. That is why we stand for our pledge and cover our hearts to recite it, why we sing our anthem and why our flag is to NEVER touch the ground. @@enderwiggin5572 i do hope you know this story is complete bullshit. the flag had nothing to do with the battle, all this "if they take down the flag" crap is a complete fabrication. not only that but there was only one prisoner on the ship with key, a man who key was there to negotiate release (and did so successfully). idk where the "narrator" of this is getting his facts but the flag had nothing to do with the battle. moreover the flag that was being flown during the battle and the one rose in the morning were completely different flags. a single google search will tell you this. the idea that is was the same flag flown during the battle is a stunning inaccuracy only repeated by people wanting to storm up some bullshit patriotic fervor.
Hopefully enough time has passed since you posted this that you appreciate this story for what it is. I know you have all grown into proud Americans. God Bless
At least they became more respectful after the story deepened.. Freedom is NEVER free……these patriots gave their lives to keep America free. To keep it free so that losers like Brittany Griner feels the need to ask for it not be played at sport events…and Kapernick would not stand for the anthem, instead kneeling. Question is should they be allowed to represent America in sports at home & abroad?😡
@@michaelb.3982 They've been taught that perspective, it's not their fault. They've also been taught that this isn't their history, but rather white history, so they don't fully appreciate it as Americans. Give them some time and encouragement.
Yes, the story is true! I actually wrote a term paper about it for American History. A lot of people now point to the 2nd verse where he mentions slaves. But you have to know your history! He wasn't talked about ACTUAL slaves, as many of them were fighting for the US also. He was calling the citizens who were loyal to England "slaves". Because they preferred to be ruled by a King than to be free! I actually get emotional every time that I hear this song. So glad that y'all took the time to learn the REAL meaning of the words! And you're right, it will hit different now❤❤
I am well-versed in its history and lyrics. The third verse of the anthem contains lyrics that have been interpreted as alluding to slavery: "And where is that band who so vauntingly swore, That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion A home and a Country should leave us no more? Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave, And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave." The phrase "the hireling and slave" is believed by some historians to refer to the British use of African American slaves as soldiers during the War of 1812. The British forces offered freedom to slaves who joined their ranks, which was a common practice by the British at the time. This offer led to tensions and concerns among American slave owners, who feared that their slaves might join the British forces. Wish they would have won then no ignorant negroes
Jimmy Hendrix did a guitar version of the Anthem at Woodstock which most Americans don't know about. It's absolutely brilliant. Take a listen if you haven't yet. Great guitarist.
His version in my opinion was crap....if he would have left all that guitar feedback and all that other noise he made playing it, then yes it would have been awesome, but he was fcked up on acid and it was made a psychedelic tune.
I shed a tear every time I hear the National Anthem. I cry when I hear Whitney sing it. We should all consider ourselves so lucky to live in this amazing country.
The Star Spangled Banner was written here in Bmore. I grew up about 10 minutes from Ft. McHenry. So I've heard this story so many times in school and on field trips to Ft. McHenry. This story is real although dramaticized. The flag kept flying because people were holding it up and kept it up dead and all lots of blacks. It is still there now.
75% of this story is so fictionalized as to be unrecognizable to real historians. Much of it never happened at all, especially the most dramatic parts of the story.
@@MrVvulf It's kinda the same about this 'woke' agenda to kneel on one knee when this song plays at events. Their 'story' to justify such action is so fictionalized as to be unrecognizable to real historians.
stop it. Black people have been living on their knees, since the end of the Civil Rights era. I know you think you are strong in the mind. but these people were strong strong back in the day, and they were willing to die for what they believed in. black people on the other hand Want others to die, to save them. that's just the truth. in fact, you're still on your knees today Kaepernick taught you well.
Watching all of you at the end, singing the National Anthem and putting your hands over your hearts, made me so happy that it brought tears to my eyes. Keep up the great content, and God bless you all. 🙏✝️🇺🇸

Love this reaction video to the ultimate underdog story. They went up against an empire, impossible odds, and won. Thank you for your hospitality America! Great job guys!
Got to say I've been watching you all for a few years... I want to say you young men give me hope and I'm honored to share this land we call America with you all. You all give me some hope.
The Anthem has 4 stanzas. Here is the whole song: Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming? Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight, O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming? And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air, Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there. Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave? On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep, Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes, What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep, As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses? Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam, In full glory reflected now shines in the stream: ‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! And where is that band who so vauntingly swore That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion, A home and a country should leave us no more! Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution. No refuge could save the hireling and slave From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave: And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave! Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand Between their loved home and the war’s desolation! Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation. Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just, And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.” And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
The funny thing is most don’t even know this both this and lift every voice and sing in my experience don’t even know there’s more to it or ever heard it till I played it for them.
This is a true story! This is why we stand for the anthem (we will die on our feet before we live on our knees) and why we never let the flag touch the ground.
Francis Scott Key wrote the Star Spangled Banner. The story is absolutely true. This is why our country is the greatest country in world. We will never stand down. We will fight till the death. Let Freedom Ring!
Absolute bullshit is what it is. It takes a special kind of gullible person to think that the US side had info on what the English were saying and thinking...about a flag.
It isnt true though. Not this version of the story. This version is a myth. At least 80% of what is said here is made up. The lawyer got on the boat to make a deal, battle happened, he saw the flag after battle and it touched him. All the rest is completely made up. It is sad people have to invent extra shit to make it sound more amazing than it is.
this story is a work of fiction. key was in baltimore to secure the release of a single civilian prisoner, not a bunch of soldiers. he wasn't on a british ship during the bombardment. you need to do better historical research.
This video always makes me cry. Two of my ancestors gave their lives for our freedom at The Battle of Cowpens during the Revolutionary War. My mom's oldest brother gave his life in Korea. Freedom isn't free. It's cost a lot of lives over the years.
Too bad we have so little here in the U.S. You do realize that the above video is almost completely made up, and that it's not the Revolutionary War that is going on, it's 22yrs later.
Listen to the words of the Star Spangled Banner and think of the story. It was written at this time. The words came from somewhere. It was a true story. Also thank you to the gentleman who removed his cap, at least for a moment. It is respectful to do so. As is standing and putting a hand over your heart.
Thank you for these words. It was the War of 1812. We were fighting the British empire again , after winning our independence in 1776. We were not ready for war. And in fact were losing badly. Holding out in this battle in the Baltimore harbor gave us the morale to continue and win. Also the foundation of our Navy occurred in this War. Lots of other interesting facts about this war, but not really talked about much.🤩👍
I am so proud to be an American and most people don't even know what our flag truly represents. I am also a veteran and know the lives that were given for our freedom. I hear so many people complain about our country and my advice to them would be to find another country to live if you're not happy.
I was a combat medic in a particular heavy combat area (Ramadi 2004-05) as my unit came home, you march into a stadium filled with your family’s. They played the national anthem tears from every damn one of us. The horrors we witnessed were over and we were home…never felt anything so powerful for something I never found important before tbh. There wasn’t a dry eye in formation that day.
God bless you guys...your reactions are priceless. I grew up with a military father and lived on Army bases. Knowing in real time what it was for these men to fight for our freedom! Pray this gets to thousands to watch....thank you!
Watching you young men pay homage to our great nation, even though this nation did not show your ancestors justice, yet you still pay respect, makes my American heart smile. Great job fellas, I am a big fan.
It is ignorant fools who know nothing about this Country and how hard it was to be free, that squat like idiots when our flag is flown and honored. I throw up in my mouth everytime I see such ignorance.
I disagree, and so does anyone that kneels or genuflects to anything. It is a respectful gesture and a plea to the brothers and sisters of America to be seen. I think its a beautiful American act, and I SEE IT. No one chose to turn their back, they chose to kneel. If it is a call to defend the certain and unalienable rights, then we need to answer that call.
As a Marylander, I love to tell people that Fort McHenry still stands to this day. It's a National Monument in the NPS and an American Flag still waves high above it. Francis Scott Key was indeed a lawyer in Maryland during the war of 1812 (I live in the town that he's from) and because it is a true story, you can also see the actual Star Spangle Banner Flag at the Smithsonian museum in DC.
@@75colstonb There are videos online of the restoration work that was done, it's fascinating. Really hard to wrap your head around how big it is without seeing it. And what's left is not even the full flag, many parts were cut up and given away as gifts while the flag was in private ownership.
You're not understanding that it was a different time. Honor, integrity, self determination, freedom, they weren't just words to these people. They lived it. And we've sadly lost that.

Do you know where the tune came from?

Unfortunately this video is propaganda and not history. Only 4 people died at the fort. There was no pile of bodies holding up the flag.

If that were the ONLY reason to respect it, THAT would be enough!"
He passed away in 2020 & indeed that Flag DID cover his coffin. It was then folded by 2 Airmen & handed to me by a 3rd while 3 others fired their rifles in salute. That was the saddest & the proudest moment of my life at the same time.
God bless you for your service & May God bless America always 🇺🇸❤️

My dad as a 21 yr old Marine watched that flag go up on Mt. Suribachi and even as an old man he would struggle to his feet when this song played. God bless you young men for playing this.
Wow. Much respect for your dad. May his legacy be remembered forever.

Welcome, we're glad to have you! All the best to you and your husband!

Look him up, interesting story..
go do some home work
As a disabled Marine, it should now be obvious to most why so many Americans became disgusted and upset at the site of athletes taking a knee. For my family, who have served in all the 20th century battles, it was appalling. Nice job on the reaction guys.
@Jim, Thank you for your service.
Semper Fi Marine. Oohraaahhh!
As a Us war vet. Served as a MP and raised by cops, I was not offended as I knew the protest was about a real grievance.
You guys all singing absolutely made my hèart happy. I saw in all of your faces the bravery of those men...thank you for showing what men should be

God bless you and your daughter.

And you're right, it will hit different now❤❤
Bingo, same as I learned it.... Hat Tip!!!
I am well-versed in its history and lyrics. The third verse of the anthem contains lyrics that have been interpreted as alluding to slavery:
"And where is that band who so vauntingly swore,
That the havoc of war and the battle's confusion
A home and a Country should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footstep's pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave,
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave."
The phrase "the hireling and slave" is believed by some historians to refer to the British use of African American slaves as soldiers during the War of 1812.
Wyclef did a pretty good rendition at Woodstock '99 as well. But he was being pelted with bottles while he performed it.

His version in my opinion was crap....if he would have left all that guitar feedback and all that other noise he made playing it, then yes it would have been awesome, but he was fcked up on acid and it was made a psychedelic tune.

The Anthem has 4 stanzas. Here is the whole song:
Oh, say can you see by the dawn’s early light
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars thru the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket’s red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
Oh, say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?
On the shore, dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner! Oh long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country should leave us no more!
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
Oh! thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation!
Blest with victory and peace, may the heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation.
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!
The funny thing is most don’t even know this both this and lift every voice and sing in my experience don’t even know there’s more to it or ever heard it till I played it for them.
Respect and Honor, should always be given because Freedom lsn’t Free
Who is this that knows the Star-Spangle banner so well?
Thank you!!!!
You gentlemen are such a blessing to me!
Thank you, Lord Jesus, for these men of honor!
I thank those brave men for their sacrifice so that I could be born free.
This is a true story! This is why we stand for the anthem (we will die on our feet before we live on our knees) and why we never let the flag touch the ground.
I bet you will never feel the same Everytime you sing this song. Thank you.
Yes, it's in the video right up there. Check it out.
this story is a work of fiction. key was in baltimore to secure the release of a single civilian prisoner, not a bunch of soldiers. he wasn't on a british ship during the bombardment.
you need to do better historical research.
@@TheRedStateBlue YOU need to do research. They aren't going to lie about how the National Anthem was written smh
And still is...God bless!
Lots of other interesting facts about this war, but not really talked about much.🤩👍
thanks for sharing. this is good to know.
I am so proud to be an American and most people don't even know what our flag truly represents. I am also a veteran and know the lives that were given for our freedom. I hear so many people complain about our country and my advice to them would be to find another country to live if you're not happy.
I always tear up with this song. It touches the soul deeply. How people can be disrespectful. I just don't understand. 😢
Crying...I love my country and all it's people. ❤🇺🇸
I was taught this i. Elementary school, I am 74yrs old.😢❤
Watching you young men pay homage to our great nation, even though this nation did not show your ancestors justice, yet you still pay respect, makes my American heart smile. Great job fellas, I am a big fan.
Kneeling to disrespect the flag is beyond insulting to the memory and history of those who gave us our freedom and independence.
It is ignorant fools who know nothing about this Country and how hard it was to be free, that squat like idiots when our flag is flown and honored. I throw up in my mouth everytime I see such ignorance.
It is because of honor, integrity, freedom, and self determination that you can kneel and still not be disrespectful!
@@newinrcno
Rather die on our feet than serve on our knees. That’s why you dont kneel
Francis Scott Key was indeed a lawyer in Maryland during the war of 1812 (I live in the town that he's from) and because it is a true story, you can also see the actual Star Spangle Banner Flag at the Smithsonian museum in DC.
lol remember Francis scott key mall?
@@ds-zd9qz Haha, yep, still there btw
Oh wow! Would love to see the actual flag. What a piece of history.
@@75colstonb There are videos online of the restoration work that was done, it's fascinating. Really hard to wrap your head around how big it is without seeing it. And what's left is not even the full flag, many parts were cut up and given away as gifts while the flag was in private ownership.
I live in Md and my aunt worked at the gift shop for over 40 years at fort McHenry
