Thinking back to the 1982 footage, there's nothing alien in this map. Fantastic recreation - the browns, greys, and blues. Wish there was a Scottish map ;)

Yep, exactly this. I could recognize multiple landmarks and areas! And I've only seen pictures in books and videos about the war. That's remarkable. With the weather set to a matching preset the islands look incredibly real.

Good review, I am definitely happy to have it in the game. I think dcs need to be cautious not to follow fs with map texturing, but happy to see where the team can take it from here. For the scope of project & the number of developers on it I'm pretty impressed with the early access state

I picked this map up today and flew around the Falklands in a Mirage and on and off HMS Invincible in a Huey. I like it so far and will continue to explore it. Frame rates dropped a bit in some locations but it opens up a lot of possibilities. It really calls for a Sea Harrier and other period assets but it’s a good start.

I also spent 4.5 months down South, from November 86- March 87, based out of Fox Bay, West Falklands, and it's barren, inhospitable and downright brutal during the 4 seasons daily changes, I deployed mostly to Mount Alice EW , but did regular foot patrols all over West Falklands, and loved Saunders Island Patrol(s) the best.
I'd question the Patagonia side of stuff, and also spent time in X Region of Chile, and at times the tree lines started almost at sea level, not bought the map yet, I will, I knew from the get go this wasn't going to be the Caucus or Syria type detail, and anyone with a bit of knowledge of South America/South Atlantic would also know it's not known for it's populated regions !!

Your video convinced me to pick this one up. I thought it was a cool, new location ripe for missions, but I was on the fence due to some things I had been hearing. I knew it was EA and a small development team, so I expected it to be a work in progress, but you sold me on taking that leap. Thanks.

Want it just for the fond memories but will wait :)
My job was communicating with the guys deployed with Rapier and co-ording them when the Taiphoons played red aircraft (or were we playing opfor AD?), so we may have been exercising "against" each other!

I love this map. Even as is. I’ve cobbled together a mission that starts off with a runway strike at Stanley (in Harriers, of course), return to ‘Hermes’ - actually Tarawa - and then rearm with sidewinders only and defend a landing at San Carlos against A4 (using the mod) and Mirage ground attack. Ok, my mission creation is rubbish and I’m using a few mods like HMAS Vampire as destroyers - the default ones trash the A4s before they can drop anything. If I squint and ignore the versions of the vehicles it looks like news footage from 1982. Also, those glaciers! Gorgeous!

I'm thinking there's even more potential than mentioned in the video. S3 getting new textures? Hmmm. Perhaps sub hunting in a Combat Hoover? Or how about this? Perhaps a combined arms like module, where you have live captains at the helm of the ships in a task force? There are LOTS of different avenues this could go down. This theatre could be the start of something VERY big

While I appreciate the effort of the mapmakers it just feels wrong to spend 55 euros on just a map when the flight simulator includes literally all of earth on a level to be bearable when you're doing air to air combat.

Ithink your comments here sum up my opinion of the map perfectly. I also run on an old PC that I'm unlikely to be able to upgrade for a while so the sheer performance I was getting while bombing low level over the Falklands in a helicopter was really nice. I've already started playing around with turning Dunnose Head into a FARP using the invisible heliports.

Thanks for the review, to put into perspective, it's imposible do not love what is representing the map, they are giving us the chance of fly over my land, just fly over the Andes, Perito Moreno, Ushuaia, etc, is outstanding, I never thought that we could have even the chance to do it in our favourite combat sim. I'm pretty aware of release status and the condition of the development, the only critisism is the price at this EA stage, is one of the expensives modules over the DCS platform, for some people it cost, is an investmen hard to do. As I said, I love the area, have finally the chance to recreate some historical fights over the islands, but I will patiently wait for it, even if the map is pure feeling for me, I'll give it time, and maybe take advantage over a juicy offer, and of course, make some room in the disk. Regards.

I think it's a stunning map and I'm looking forward to purchasing it in the future when it's more complete. However I think you were being quite generous with the performance.
One of the members of our group who bought it has had unplayable frame rates in several sections of the map.
Given his performance is usually rock solid in any liberation campaigns we try, with his high end pc, 1080p monitor and history of streaming previous campaigns. This has led most of our group to hold off until significant performance improvements are made.
To be getting rough performance prior to putting any units in is not a great start. Especially if performance will prevent full scale campaigns being utilised on this map which I agree it's perfect for.

A lot of reports from the community and members of our group is that the performance sits between Syria and Marianas.
The latter nobody uses partly because the performance is so poor and Syria becomes unusable in high unit scenarios such as a big liberation mission.

  • @Americium-120
    @Americium-120 2 года назад +4

The "early access" excuse only carries so much weight when they said they've worked on this for 4 years and it's this incomplete at a price that can get you a complete aircraft module that you can play on anything. There is also no guarantee that RAZBAM will ultimately follow through with fixes when this map is already so poorly received; especially with the knowledge that RAZBAM works incredibly slow and inefficiently to begin with. Product releases like this make me question if the F-15E will be as equally incomplete and lacking of proper dedication and love.

Thanks for the great review. I have the map and while interesting and I too see the potential, I wonder how many DCS players relish the idea of flying an hour...refuel...fly another hour to a target and back...refuel and head for home? I know that is what is like in real life and the map has the potential for those types of missions... but I suspect that what we will see are shorter range scenarios over small select portions of the map....as in my experience in DCS, most will not like really long flights...especially in multiplayer.... time will tell. I think the scenery is beautiful and stunning in places too. My only negatives are performance issues at low level...but with optimization that should improve...and I was hoping for some sheep and penguins to liven up the landscape :-)

Really was looking forward to this map, very excited to see how it is in a few months or when leaving early access.
In its current state is rather concerning for me, the map was delayed a lot yet there is still soooooo much nowhere near finished for me to be comfortable buying; i simply can't see them completing it to the current scope. I know the original scope was just to include the Falkland's themselves but vast majority of the SA American continent is nowhere near completion on their map progress map, just by the sheer size of that area I cannot fathom how it ever will be done. The size of the map is also worrying, they've stated they cant use full detailed textures or it would be 250gb yet its already 70 with so much incomplete, surely its going to balloon in size or sacrifice details. Furthermore Falklands war era options are important for me, they've said this will be supported in the future but with so much other stuff yet to be completed, once again I cannot see it being done in a reasonable timeframe. The asset pack is also rather underwhelming, while i am begrudging to complain about free stuff its a weird mix including a lot of pre falklands war ships, (though the blame may lie with ED) upon release a lot of the weapon systems of these assets are incomplete or not working fully.
Really hoping this map is successful but i fear they've feature creeped the scope and size of it far too much.

What's next? DCS: Saskatchewan? $60 for the Syria map is already high enough. But compared to this insignificant and boring piece of land, Syria has to offer so much more when it comes to conflicts and history, and scenery as well. Haifa, Beirut, Damascus, Adana, Aleppo, many detailed famous cities. The iraq expansion alone offers more value for me personally, than the damn falkland islands or the entire south atlantic map as a whole.
I don't like it at all that they want to ask $70 for a couple villages and small airports in one of the most deserted places on this planet. The map is incompatible with most modules, in contrast to Syria and PG. Saving my money for WWII Marianas+Afghanistan, and hopefully a SEA and a desert storm map. In the end it's the lack of historic events and "cultural significance" that keeps me from buying the south atlantic map, not visual/quality issues.

Like this map a lot. Adds variety to the gameplay. Speaking of gameplay: I think, the only flaw of this region is, its not a much contested part of the world with high tensions between local- or super- powers. Scenarios have to relay heavy on imagination besides the falkland war. The terrain itself is fantastic.

    • @TacticalPascale
      @TacticalPascale  2 года назад

Is Syria contested by superpowers, the Marianas or the Persian gulf? Carriers aren’t allowed in the Black Sea so that scenario is a work of fiction.
The islands and surrounding regions allow for huge potential, suspension of reality is required as it currently is for most other maps.

Bought it, had a good fly-around, and hoping my squadron might do something with it. But, super struggling with the textures, lots of areas that make me reminisce of FSX's satellite imagery. What Razbam could do, is send someone with a fixed-wing mapping drone to the Falklands, even if it is just high traffic areas like Port Stanley, airports, and anywhere with a 50m reasonably flat run to take off and land. Might even be an RC model hobbyist already on the island to do it (it's really not hard, the software does 99.9% of it for you). Wouldn't be bank-breaking at all and would make a world of difference!! Do suspect this will sit for a while on my install until they do some more work on it. For heli pilot's ... I can't recommend.

"Early Access" is a cop out - look at how many modules in the libray/store that are still in EA after years and years of being available without any end-goal. ED should enforce a max EA period of two years to full release... but saying that they are one of the worst offenders.
In regards to the SA map - they should have done as Urga Media did with the Syria map - started small and gradually expanded as areas became more polished. The Falklands, whilst yes I would agree that the islands are mostly complete - none of the building have had any sort of ambient occlusion shadows added to them do not have that monopoly house appearance. They keep stating "every object has been hand placed on the map" but they have blatantly - in areas that are of interest in a relatively barren landscape - been misplaced, for example Mt. Kent base - they have placed a whopping big antenna, right on top of the helipad for the base?! You can clearly see the "H" in the centre of the square pad right underneath the base of the mast. I don't really care for the glaciers and the valleys in the remote areas of the SW parts of Chile - but for a fairly high profile area of the map that has been marked as "80-100% complete" to have such glaringly and blantant mistakes is unacceptable and I've lost a lot of confidence in the team.

Sadly its true what your saying, ED has to pickup their slack. Important topics like Vulkan / Performance / Terrain quality / Legacy code. I know its not fair to compare a Sim engine with a Unreal Engine 5, but the difference in visuals and performance are day and night. If ED is continuing this path, i will lose interest eventually. I have to many modules which are still in Early Access or are released but still feel unfinished. The AV8B, my first purchase back in 2017 is still having a major overhaul.

Thanks for the tour but the map isn’t worth it to me yet, will wait to see if they will continue to improve on such a fantastic land area or let it hibernate like many of the other modules they have developed . Best of luck to them…

  • @me-low-key

South Atlantic would be worth it, if it weren't for all that landscape covered with low res textures. In it's current state it's so ugly to justify that price tag.
I guess it's better to wait how it would turn out in graphics and performance after the development is mostly complete.

Interesting region, not a needed map. Yes the Falklands war blah blah... give us Iraq, Afganistan, Vietnam... anything. This is another Channel/Nevada map imo. I'd rather they used more of the existing maps area or polished existing maps.

I'd take Vietnam over any other map. Afghanistan and Iraq - meh, until they improve the ground war. The channel map is excellent imo, one of the most important areas that have ever had pilots dueling in air to air combat. The Falklands too is one of the most recent regions that saw air to air combat. Its opportunities in DCS are vast.

Until ED make trees destructible a Vietnam map would be the most frustratingly annoying map with the enemy safe from us thanks to a tripple canopy we can't penetrate.

@@TacticalPascale they recently did. Infantry got way better at route finding. Line formation now uses leap frogging and a couple weeks ago they finally adjusted the infantry damage model so you do no longer require a headshot to kill an insurgent with a rocket.
I'd personally looooove to have an Afghanistan map. Good mix of different landscapes, recent conflict and 80ies era invasion, matches a lot(!) of the modules we currently have in DCS...

Map should've been smaller, quality over quantity i would say, or at least do it for the pilots who fly helicopters. They should've at least aimed for Persian Gulf quality of textures. Not worth 55 and even 65 dollars in my opinion. Its 2022 guys please. Hopefully the Sinai map won't disappoint.

This is a hugely sub par map. The textures and overall look remind me of Caucus map from DCS 1.0! Of course I can see the potential scenarios possible but the map is simply very bad quality! I bought it on release and my god was it a let down! The asset pack was something I wanted and it’s being released as part of an update so everyone will get access (which I think is a fair move). 55 euros is too much for this. Syria is 100 times better and Mariana’s is also light years ahead and it’s free! Forget whining about early access and chants of it will improve! the South American portion of the map is absolute bollox! just my view but for those on a budget this ain’t worth it!

Painted polygons everywhere. Ground textures (e.g. mountains) have not really improved much since the late 1990s, the maps have just got bigger. Port Stanley looks comical at ground level.

It seems to me, the "hate" faction pretty much focuses on the "heavily work in progress" part of the map. Like if someone would review the Syria map based on western Iraq, the south fringes below Palmyra and things like the city of Afrin... There is always enough bad parts to be found, if you look long enough.
The thing that's up to us, is, to find the beautiful spots and details, rather than search for the (obviously) bad parts.
I still need a review showing the gras strips around the islands, especially the beauty one at Lorenzo Farm, or the Argentine forward base on Pebble Island, or Pleasant Harbor, or the nice sources of creeks and rivers, or anything else I forgot or haven't seen, yet.
There was a complaint about the "tiles" like look in the Argentine cities. Well, look at them (Google Maps), that's what they have done in real life. Checkerboards with standard houses, embedded in a street grid, on large parts. But people have more fun bashing stuff, than enjoying what we have already, it seems to me.
I mean, yes, I am not blind to the textures in some places, neither did I miss the coastline blending still in need of some love, but for an early access with such a huge and diverse(!!!) landscape it is pretty good. And Specter and the team were very open about the things still in the works and where they will improve later. They communicated that in interviews, on the discord and release notes.
So I love the detailed parts, like the WIP parts, with the outlook on what they can be in the future. Btw. there are seemingly more airports in the works already on the mainland... On the Falklands I found 5 Gras strips and bases, not in the F10 map, yet. East of Ushuaia at Puerto Williams is an airfield it seems. And at Tolhuin another airport that looks like it already got some love...

This is a Falklands map plus some South American airfields to make it more useful.
IMHO Razbam did clearly communicate this in their blogs and those are the areas that are full detail.

Great review, and thanks for pointing out some aspects of its continued development. I love the SA map too, and I absolutely enjoy its 'forbidding' quality; however, I am from the Pacific Northwest (Seattle, US) and probably biased towards poetically rocky and foggy beaches, as opposed to the sunny radiated California/Florida beaches.
I'm quite amazed that I frequently run across statements of how this map doesn't have much campaign potential (excluding the Falkland Wars). For me, l see it as a great map for campaigns between China and the West/NATO. With all the business corruption (oil, diamonds, agriculture) China is practicing in South America, along with the potential political unrest, from some SA politicians supporting such corruption, the map has potential for great SA campaigns.
Please, you guys, don't take this as a 'political' post. Just trying to add more flavor to DCS campaigns. If interested in the SA map for potential campaign/mission building, here are a couple of links that gave me some ideas, and may help out -if you're looking for a kick-start.
