As a proud spb143 owner I have to say that’s it’s awesome what they’ve done! Just a cool version 3.0? Great specs all around! I’ll keep mine tho. The ash grey dial of the 143 with the steel bezel is one of the most attractive combinations I’ve seen in all of watchmaking imo and I’ve owned many watches. However I might get the gilted version. I always thought about it and the bracelet upgrade is very tempting. It’s not competition here, it’s actually enrichment!
I disagree about "plain black dial". Seiko does black dials extremely well. So satisfying to look at. Even the simple turtle black dial is amazing. Another standout is the old Stargate. The grey dial is underwhelming to me, as is the matte black on the slim turtle. Glad to see they are doing an all black dial.
I should've made it sound more sarcastic. I'm a sucker for Seiko black dials. You'll seldom see me buy a non-black dial. oh yeah the Stargate looks clean too, nice suggestion.
Would sell my 143 and upgrade in a flash…. If the movement now more reliable and possible to regulate. Losing 20 seconds a day a real pain no matter how great the watch looks.
Already have the SBDC141 and love it. I'm not going to sell it for this new version just because I have really grown attached to it and have a lot of memories with the watch but I'm definitely buying the black one couple of months after the release date.
Beautiful watch but would have preferred they kept the water resistance at 200 meters (656 ft) if it slimmed the watch down to 12 mm and could do without the extra text stating "Automatic 3 Days." The world record for the deepest scuba dive is 332.35 meters (1090 ft). The descent took 15 minutes while the ascent lasted 14 hours.
I’m a sucker for symmetry and i’m loving this new release , the 300m water resistance is a welcome upgrade too! Now if Seiko could only release a simple Sunray black dial and black bezel version of the SLA073 , honestly can’t wait for the day it happens cuz i know for sure it will happen sometime soon in the future 😩
I did sell the 143 and no regrets. Both are great but the slightly smaller size and almost invisible date (only see it when you want to) makes it well worth it.
These new models are superb and would have (due to the 300m water resistance) deserved the Marinemaster designation. The price doesn't bother me at all given these specifications. Thanks for this video. 👍👋🇨🇵
@@KirbyYoungkeeping my 143 as i believe it will become more sought after down the road .. I will get the chocolate dial with gilt and it will live along side the mm200 the 143, and a captain willard ...
Wouldn’t call my experience with the 6R35 in my Alpinist “nothing but bad luck”, but it does lose significant time (about 2-3 minutes) over the course of its power reserve. I’ll take it out of the roll, set and wind it, wear it for the day and as I rotate through my other watches, notice the Alpinist is off after two days. Love it otherwise and am considering taking it to my local Seiko AD and having the watchmaker take a look at it.
One of my favorite seiko, but the problem with seiko is that there is no big esthetic diference beetwen a 200$ model and a 4000$... of course the finishing and mouvment are very diferent but when you look them if youre not a specialist you dont see the difference...curious no?
To my eye on the original SPB 143 the Prospex logo, Automatic, and DIVERs 200m, form an agreeable (-ish) pyramid, they look considered, designed and proportional, this text arrangement looks awkward. I'd need to see it in the metal, but for the moment I'd say my SPB143 (no 3pm lum) is pretty safe, but the next itteration who knows...why no lumious date wheel at 3pm?
Agree with this, the aluminum insert on the SKX's look messed up after a few years, I also saw some sumo's with easily messed up inserts. I guess ceramic is the answer, but every advantage has a disadvantage.
There’s zero chance I will flip my 143 for one of these. If the new version had a three o clock date, 11mm thickness, and no prospex logo then I’d consider it… on the other hand, that’s basically a smaller Casio duro. The duro looks fantastic on a nato but the seiko looks out of place. The seiko looks amazing on a green rubber strap.
Choco and gold looks so sick,I am like a heroin addict I just need my dose of Seiko every year,I even don’t know how manny Seiko watches I own, they are in every part of my apartment.
That 'Automatic 3 Days' on the dial is dumb. I don't need to be reminded of this feature every time I look at the time. That's a feature I'd consider in purchasing the watch.
the positives are the new dimensions, movement (maybe), 300M with new caseback. However, the matte black dial and bezel does not look as good as the 143’s sunray grey and brushed bezel. And that date window is a deal breaker in my eyes. If these are replacements i’m very grateful for my 143. I’m also awaiting for my sje093 so I feel like I have the best of both worlds.
I like my diashield on my spb147 as it suits the aesthetic of the gilt but it does take away any potential for patina... microbrands can create hardness coatings without a warm hue, Seiko should be able to do the same!
Noone would dive professionally with this watch. who really cares if it has 200 or 300m. You wear it for style, so really it's just a gimmick. I wish more people would admit that to themselves.
Highly unlikely that dive watch owners dive with their respective watches, but that's just like having more horsepower without having the need to go too fast, but it's nice to know you can if you do.
The spb143 is a piece of junk, the 6r35 is crap. This might be better but the bracelet is the same as the spb143, crap diver extension not enough micro adjustments but most important, buying it I'll be cheering Seiko for not regulating their movements. The watch looks really nice a better version of the spb143 with that dead grey dial no thanks.
No classic grey dial, the date at that position works on the 317 but not on a case where the crown is at 3. If they redid the Willard's with that date position it would probably work but if it ain't broke, don't fix it (unlike the erratic movements).
@@sys-administrator yes it is. It’s the same as the 6R35. Only difference is two more hours of power reserve and a corny gold plated rotor. The 6R35 was problematic for many; I assume this movement will be, too.
Can't wait for June to arrive. The special edition version immediately caught my eye when I saw the photos.
Wish seiko kept the grey sunray dial, it was iconic IMO. Though i agree the black one looks nice indeed!

X3. Prefer the date at the 3 and much prefer the grey sunray dial. Will probably pick up a Tudor Pelagos next.

Small and does not distract the hour markers. No lume BS (Who needs to know the date under water in the dark?)

Nice watches. I'll keep my 143 since I almost wear it every day. Man I cant go without the 143...Maybe I need professional help😂
Just wear the spb143 every day, and you'll be fine.
donty worry, you are normal
Maybe great. I hope the alignment of the bezel pip is solved, and there will be a better movement. Also the bracelet should be updated.
Looks amazing ! Just hope the bracelet buckle has been updated - mine wasn’t good at all
Throw it away and put a custom leather strap.
Good review, but I will keep my original grey dial.

The one thing they sorely need to improve is the clasp. But everything else is almost perfect.
this has a new clasp but only 2 micro adjustment
I might have to get this one. Reads like a no date with that new placement.
Now that's a quick decision. Which one?

Good looking Seikos. May be time for me to trade up from my Seestern 62MAS V3 for the real thing at 10X the price. :)

Sounds like you won't need any other 62Mas variant when you get the SJE093, that may be all that you need.
I'm sure the grey is coming. This is just the beginnng
Big bracelet upgrade
will be a big seller
Looking forward to your foresight.
Date placement looks pretty weird though - not a big fan of this detail..
They should of included the gray dial or possibly green
Maybe a future release which will be either a special edition or limited edition.
I’m in the minority, but divers on my 8” wrist need to be (at a minimum) 42mm in diameter for me to even consider them.
Guess I’m passing on this one.
Love my spb143 but this looks boring and too generic for me
the grey dail gives the spb143 some distinction form other sub style watches, this has nothing to offer in terms of standing out
