PROTECT YOUR ELDERBERRIES: Everything You Need to Know About Bagging Berries from Birds

Growing elderberries tends to be fairly easy and many folks experience little pest pressure and disease to the actual plant. However, the berries themselves can be difficult to harvest before other critters get to them first. Right after flowering birds are already snatching the tiny, undeveloped berries long before they even have a chance to ripen.
I have used a net to "protect" my elderberry plantings in the past with little success. The nets would need to be very large to cover the full plant and then garden-stapled to the ground to keep them secure. Birds and squirrels easily find a way under the net, climb the branches, and successfully retrieve berries. Applying individual bags isn't at all time consuming and ensures a harvest.
