PREPPING EVERYTHING for HURRICANE SEASON on a flood plain FARM + HOMESTEAD
Hurricane season is tricky. Throw a homestead into the mix and it's a challenge for sure. Add a flood plain and there's a recipe for a long to-do list. I'm sharing how we prep for hurricanes and tropical storms from gardening to animal care to water catchment. This is a smattering of info on many facets of our permaculture farm. Though we have a lot of infrastructure in place for extreme weather events, we also have to think about stocking on hay, any feed, placing animals in suitable areas, etc.

Is COMFREY REALLY worth the hype? Chop & Drop Tutorial + Uses on the Permaculture Homestead

The comfrey I am recommending and use in my growing spaces is Russian Comfrey, which produces sterile seed. This strain of comfrey does not become invasive. I use it heavily throughout my farm for its loads of value and function. EVERY GARDEN NEEDS THIS PLANT

EVERY GARDEN NEEDS BORAGE // Let’s talk about another permaculture powerhouse plant that’s actually in the same family as comfrey. It’s borage and, hopefully, after reading below, you’ll add it to your growing space too. 🤗 🌱 Similar to comfrey, BORAGE has a taproot. It mines and releases nutrients, especially potassium and calcium. This makes it an AWESOME companion for tomatoes and squash crop...

BREAK the Fruit/Apple Tree PEST CYCLE! Graze fallen fruit from your apple and pear trees.
Просмотров 470Месяц назад
There are three main reasons to pick up fallen fruit: 1. To break pest life cycles; 2. To reduce soil-retained diseases; 3. To deter an influx of wasps and stinging insects. Rather than pick up fallen fruit by hand, animals can be used to graze fallen fruit. This food-source is a means of nutrition for the animal, reduces work for the farmer, and allows the soil to gain fertilizer from dropping...
PROTECT YOUR ELDERBERRIES: Everything You Need to Know About Bagging Berries from Birds
Просмотров 893Месяц назад
Growing elderberries tends to be fairly easy and many folks experience little pest pressure and disease to the actual plant. However, the berries themselves can be difficult to harvest before other critters get to them first. Right after flowering birds are already snatching the tiny, undeveloped berries long before they even have a chance to ripen. I have used a net to "protect" my elderberry ...
Prune Tomatoes Like a Pro! Tips for Healthy Tomato Plants
Просмотров 532Месяц назад
As a permaculture homesteader and grower, I'm largely hands off when it comes to planting. I'm not really interested in micromanaging nor manicuring my growing spaces. There are a couple of exceptions when it comes to pruning for the health of the plant/harvest though; fruiting trees, shrubs and tomato plants fall into that category. I think pruning can truly be as complicated or as simple as t...

BLUEBERRY GUILDS: Permaculture approach to growing better blueberries

    Good point about taking carbon from the air and getting it into plants, through regenerative farming! I didn't make that connection but it's so clear that this is what needs to be done.

    Been working to rid a 12x12 vegetable garden of landscaping fabric we put down 4 or 5 years ago. We had put dirt on top of it and forgot about it. I guess it was the easy way at the time to prevent the old lawn from growing up through the newly dirted area. Ugh. I didn’t forsee the problem it would cause me. I planted carrots last year. None of them grew more than four inches long. Hmmmm. Omgosh! I forgot about the fabric. 🙄😂 Then, life happened and I couldn’t garden this year. Weeds took over like nobodies business! They grew up to my shoulder in such a short time! But the time I was able to start hacking away at them they’ve grown in and through the fabric making their removal a very difficult, sweaty job!!! I’m already 6 hours in (broken into three days) and not done yet!

    You look very well prepared. Your farm is so well thought out; clearly a lot of work to get it to this stage and keep it there. Best of luck weathering the storms. PS How are your olives doing?

      Thank you for watching! We try!!! As for the olives, the “cold hardy” varieties weren’t cold hardy enough. I keep mine in pots and bring indoors in winter.

    I had a comfrey plant in a container by my front door last summer. The deer do eat it. It was eaten to the dirt. Now it is upstairs on my deck.

    • @AxeAndRootHomestead
      @AxeAndRootHomestead 6 дней назад

      Bummer! The hairy foliage and bitter flavor are enough to deter most deer. Perhaps there’s not a lot of available natural forage in your area?

    • @MarlenevT
      @MarlenevT 6 дней назад

      @@AxeAndRootHomestead There is in the spring and summer. In the fall the natural foliage starts to die off for winter. The deer got it in late September so their options were limited. They move south down to New Mexico for the winter. They can't have it now its upstairs on the deck. New landlord has not had the yard maintained now so the "weeds" are now 2-3 feet high. Lots for them to eat. I live in the mountains of Colorado... maybe foothills.

    You don't need to dilute compost tea, there is very little nitrogen in it. Ask yourself why would it be ok to chop and drop but tea needs to be diluted? Soaking it in water doesn't add nutrients. I like permaculture but there are so many old wives tales and psuedoscientific beliefs being spread

    • @AxeAndRootHomestead
      @AxeAndRootHomestead 8 дней назад

      You don’t “need to” but your plants will smell like rotting sludge if you don’t. Diluting helps with that. Also any mold spores that might accumulate during the steeping process are diluted. Not really a myth, just common sense friend.

    I replanted comfrey in several places, front and back, and sorry I did it! The bees do love it but it grows out of control and takes over areas of my yard. Even though I plan to control it it grows too fast and I am very sensitive to it - seems like little needles all over it!

I bought a three pack of the Neeva black-and-white deodorant, which is a glass roll on container. Emptied out the bottles, removing the roller ball and put the milk of magnesia in then put it back and I’ve got my deodorant works very well.
