GROW YOUR OWN GARDEN STAKES + TRELLIS POLES // upcycle, repurpose sunchoke stalks : permaculture
While there is nothing wrong with using bamboo for trellises and stakes in the garden, I’m a big believer in using what you have. Today I am harvesting the stalks from my sunchoke plants to use as a support for next year‘s crops. Sunchokes reach somewhere between 10 to 12 feet tall, so I will be cutting off the top half of the stalk where the blossom, foliage, and skinnier/weaker stem portion reside. I am cutting the base of the stalk at the soil line above the tuber. Discarded plant material like the tops or stalks that are deemed too slender/weak to use can be composted.
To store my sunchoke stalks, I will be keeping them inside of my barn throughout the winter. Though as an experiment I...

Creating a Sustainable Garden w/ Rotting Logs + Woodchips on the Permaculture Homestead
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.Месяц назад
In nature we see rotting logs on every forest floor. These fallen trees provide shelter and food to insects, small critters, and mushrooms. They contribute to the greater mycorrhizal network, add nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium to soil, and provide a place to grow a mushroom crop. Rotting logs and large wood chunks can be a great addition to growing spaces and fruit tree guilds. There needs ...

Hot composting and cold composting. Totally different processes and end products. One kills weed seeds, pathogens and parasites. One does not. The product you are looking for and how you intend to use it will determine the process. HOT COMPOSTING - You will 2/3 carbon (brown) 1/3 nitrogen (green) ingredients. - Balance of nitrogen, carbon, aeration, moisture by tarping to trap heat and turning ...

The Secret to Protecting Your Flock and Gardens from Wildlife / Permaculture Homesteading
This is awesome information. Thank you so much for sharing!
Can it be damaged or expired if stored for a long time?
Friends back yard in rhodenisland had a 70 year old one
Not to ruin your thunder but the oranges on that tree are unedible pretty much
Landscaping fabric is terrible stuff. For all the reasons you give, and also, it breaks down after a while and the pieces become either permanently rooted into the ground, or, start flying off and creating a real rag tag looking section/yard. I will never touch it again!!!
Another plant that works well for this purpose is giant miscanthus. They are sterile and only spread slowly, but grow 12 feet tall every year while producing a very sturdy cane.
Bitter orange... orange peel candy... Marmalade, orange extract... Did you know the peels can be dried and used to treat congestion and sinus pressure? Also- check out the Cancer research done on this tree, seeds, leaves, peel and bark ❤
Out here in SoCal, we have reseeding sunflowers. They are a year-round provider of food and shelter for backyard birds, and they provide me with dozens of poles. I even use them to weave barriers in my raised beds. Green on! 😊
Believe I will stick with harvesting my bamboo. After all I have almost an acre of that! Wish it was gone! Can't cut enough to get rid of it. There are Asian people who come harvest young shoots every spring. They refuse to cut all the new ones. They say they must leave some to help next year's crop. They want it to keep coming back. 🤷
I'm really glad I found this, planted sunchokes for the first time last week. I'll definitely be using this, thanks!
How do you deal with rain water getting in the jar?
To anyone from Europe wondering: These are Topinambur (name may be slightly different in your european language) or jerusalem artichoke. 😄 It seems "sunchoke" is a term mainly used in North America, epsecially the USA and Canada and it was a marketing term from the 20th century used to make it more appealing to customers and to make clear it's not related to globe artichokes.
😮I really appreciate the use of plant base diet and herbs supplements for Tmau/Body odor & Armpit sweat smell alongside Bad breath smell by DR.UWENBOHERBALHOME on RUclips....❤❤❤
Hey, that was neat. Thank you very much.
Thanks for taking the time to watch!
Cool! Thank you for this video.
Cool! Thank you for this video.
Thank you for watching!!!
Thank you for the informative video! Where can I find mesh bags like the ones you have?
Hi! I found these on Amazon
Damn your hot!
Baking soda irritates some people,. You can use arrowroot powder
Ahh so what’s the SECRET to weed free paths???
Your soooo RIGHT sista. My husband is a landscape architect and he says the same thing. GEOFABRIC is designed to stop silts from moving into rock etc with layering geology. Not for weed control.
Just give it another season or two. Landscape fabric doesn't work long term but I guarantee you will be grovelling around on your knees weeding regardless. Weeds will always find a way. I used a thick layer of cardboard and topped it with a good layer of shredded bark mulch. I still get weeds but they come out easily with a screwdriver.
Thank you so much! I am making a permaculture homestead outside of Saint Petersburg, Russia. Now I’m your follower😊 your advices are very clear and helpful, thanks again!
In my native language that plant is called a "katjie roer my nie"
🖤🖤🖤
Do you mean upwind side so it blows downwind?
How deep is your gravel?
It also keeps squirrels away from the food
Nice video.
Thanks for watching!
Termite loves too, sorry in raised bed it's good don't remember how it call, Sweden something 🤔
If you have termites then this wouldn’t be a good fit for you. Remember to always evaluate your site before implementing any efforts into action in permaculture.
Great Information. Reallly appreciate your naturalist approach and emphasis on soil health. Personally have moved countless loads of wood mulch for use around fruit trees, garden paths or to fill low spots. Like to have a pile tucked away for use at the ready. Good stuff.
Yes that’s so great! Sounds like you’re doing such a good job with building soil. And thank you for watching!
I'm gradually starting to grow food for my livestock. I've got an area where I might get 2 or 3 regular fruit trees, but can get multiple Cordon style trees 2 to 3 feet apart. Would you still put a guild right around the trees or spread them out throughout the trees? I will be planting dwarf trees near the back and doing exactly what your doing, but with plants native to tge Kootenays in S.E. British Columbia
That's awesome, thank you!
Thank you for watching!!!
Where csn I buy the seed or the Safrron but from? Also can I grow it in Arizona?
Hi! Yes you can! I get mine from ShesRootedHome.com. She grows in the Mojave Desert!
I've seen these and wondered. Maybe you could expound on an upcoming video. The results don't look like compost - does it use heat? What kind of scraps can you use? Will the resulting compost attract animals if you sprinkle it on plants? etc If you like them, I'm intrigued!
Hi! These are good questions! I’ve been using mine for almost a month. It does require a small learning curve to get compost texture results. For example, all food scraps in the karfo yields a moist paste-like result. Just like composting outdoors, we want a balance of carbon and nitrogen ingredients. So when I add in newspaper or leaves, I get a more earthy, compost-like result. The high level of heat this reaches produces the finished product in just 5 hours (2.5 on the express cycle) so I’m not sure about the integrity of any my mychorrizae or microbes. But still, I’m excited to have another way to keep food waste out of landfills. I hope that helps!!
Interesting. Didn't know you could add carbon components and get closer to a hot compost. And as you say, so fast is very useful. Great info - thank you!
Cool!! They look like pequin peppers!!😅
beautiful!!
Thank you! I think is what I'm going to go for with about the same size in my front yard. I might be able to pull off a small solar pump, but that's not guaranteed to work all the time/etc., so this makes sense. What I've dug out so far (with no lineer) is cracked clay now in draught-stricken SE Oklahoma, but it's a "wet" area in the yard (I've found crawdads while digging!) so it might work. One rather large concern I have is that the PVC water pipe to my home goes directly through this someday pond. Is that bad? It would be exposed under the water.
I compost everything pretty much. I even had a chicken that died of heat stroke get composted and it slow cooked, when I turned the pile the chicken actually smelt like cooked chicken. My compost gets pretty hot though cause of all the chicken poo I add to it and I have to turn it daily to keep the heat down.
Good stuff. Learned something new. ❤❤❤ Thank you.
Thanks for watching!!
I raised my geese separately to other poultry, but they seem to be fascinated by the idea of smaller species existing around them. During breeding season my geese would feverishly guard groups of chicks in the pasture, like the chickens were, uh, their pets of sorts.
🤣
Thank you for making things approachable!
Of course! Thank you for watching!!
so the rock was layed on dirt? because we had weed fabric barrier [plastic] put down and its trash..weeds are crazy..i want to pull barrier out and just lay rock
Hi! Yes, after removing the fabric I moved the rock back over the condensed ground/clay. I hope that helps!
Great video! May I ask where you purchased your saffron bud? Thank you!
Thanks for watching! I got mine from shesrootedhome.com
Finally someone said this!! Thank you. It works!!
Can you show us the results?… everyone has an idea, but I’d like to see your jar full of moths, or are they attracted to your tree?.
You are my rockstar 🤩
You're sweet! Thanks for watching.
Where do I get the seed
❤❤❤ i love them all. thank you.
Thanks for watching 🖤
Any suggestions where I can buy some of the flowers or seed❤
Hi! I get mine from ShesRootedHome.com 🖤
Thanks for the info
