Running saved my life in prison Running is my solace and my escape. For twenty minutes running every day except when it rains. In prison i pretend that it doesn't exist outside of the prison Walls. Now I'm out. Still running everyday for freedom.
Two movies from my childhood that changed me forever, Rocky & Jericho mile !! This movie taught me that sometimes the law must be broken & to never let anyone put you in a box & keep you down...BREAK FREE & SHINE 🌞
Saw this movie at age 10, and boy did it leave a mark on me. Running the mile for nobody but himself. I'm 43 years old now and I just started training for a marathon. Every time I think of quitting, I remember this scene, and the music! Gets me over the wall every time.
Quite possibly the greatest. most inspirational ending to any sports movie, ever. Saw this movie when I was a teenager, and I have never forgotten it. Still get chills at this ending . . . when they look at his stopwatch and the word spreads that "he beat Davies" and then the iconic ending of the stopwatch shattering. Man, I don't think I will ever get tired of seeing that. I never see it offered on DVD or streaming. I have the VHS :)
yep me too Jeff, watched as a teenager and never forgotten it. I've just watched it again, it gets me emotionally every time! I had quite a tough time during my teenage years. My dad died when I was just 11, I was the target of some nasty bullies at school, and my brother left home to join the navy, I really missed him and my dad. Running was my escape from my problems, I could run like the wind back then. Running was like my own world away from everybody. I ended up achieving multiple school records that weren't beaten for about 15 years, and when we had cross country in physical education I would finish the race and then have to sit on the grass for about 5-10 mins before the 2nd place runner came in behind me, I always felt proud of what I achieved with my running. Unfortunately my running took a back seat when I was about 19, I will always wonder how far it could have taken me.
It says something about the performances when a film made for television stays with you over thirty years later. Excellence for the sake of excellence. And doing the time in your own way... This story of Murphy has depth and this scene still moves me in a profound way. The stopwatch crashing into the wall is just perfect.

One of my most favorite scenes of any movie. And to put it into context for anyone who never saw the movie, the Olympic committee voted not to allow him into the Olympics because he was an incarcerated felon serving a life sentence (and unjustly so). When he ran the Jericho Mile in this scene, he beat "Davies" who represented the US in the Olympics in his stead. Truly great stuff. One of the most underrated movies of all time.
I saw this when I was a kid and it blew me away as well. I'm 55 and am training for a marathon. The last one I did was when I was 30. This type of stuff motivates me to get up and run when there are days that I'd rather stay in bed. Peter Staus's best performance. Thanks for posting this scene. A great way to start the day!
I was 20 & sitting in the county jail when this aired in '79. Needless to say, all us inmates were riveted to the TV. I haven't seen it since, but I've always remembered it. One scene that really stood out for me was when he was given the pair of freal running shoes, & he sits up in the middle of the night & sits them just so & gently places the laces across them evenly. For some reason, I was very moved by that scene.
it is a unique insight into those usually solitary rituals running racers succumb to; my esteemed coach explained to those he had trained that he had a friend who got so amped for the upcoming Marathon, whenever he travelled he got two beds one for himself and one for his uniform. Thus, at least the uniform would get a good night's sleep!
@Rain Murphy I ran and use to love to run. I was not TRULY a good runner but I liked doing it. 1986 I was hit by a car never to run again. SO NEVER stop running, unless it bothers your knees.
I am 60 years old and a fat 315 lb. diabetic. I saw this in'79 and was svelte, fast and thin. This GREAT flick inspired me then and this wonderful clip forces me to get out there and have a future. We old dogs still got something of ourselves left. Get out and live, you old hippies. Run. Walk. To the wall one more time. Run that Jericho mile, Baby!
When I was a kid, I saw this on TV and remember being blown away by how great the music was. That memory has stuck with me all these years. Now, finally hearing it again, I see why. It's so much like "Sympathy for the Devil." Though in some ways a little more rockin', with no time for vocals and more time for guitar solos. A really cool song and I'm glad I finally got to hear it again. Thanks for posting.
me too bro! he set the record but broke the proof. it was his victory. i learned that off this in 8th grade lol and 40 yrs later still do epic ish and never mention
For years, I use to drum a beat. I didn't notice I was copying this song then I watching the video clipped and realized for years this song, the beat stuck in my head. Amazing. I'm a Christian but it's just a song. lol
Yea, I first saw this flick when I was locked up in ‘87. I’ll never forget it... Disabled now with much pain. I watch this movie when I need to, just to be able to keep struggling through... RbM
Saw this movie when I was a teenager, then heard the song on the radio on the way to a track meet. Had it going through my head the whole time. Blew away my personal best in the 400m by 4 seconds and cleaned the field. Wish I had a stopwatch to throw...Never ran that well again lol. Wish I'd tried to tap into that energy again. Great movie.
Such a great film. That pause in his cell facing the wall, walking out with his spikes, the absolute focus on the track, and along with that music... wow! Gives me goosebumps every time I watch this scene. Brings back such good memories of my middle distance track days back in the 80's, I sure miss those times!
I still think of this movie every time I hear Sympathy for the Devil. The inspiration and exhilaration I still get makes me think there's still some life left in this getting older body of 51 years. When I was young, I was a good runner. My Jr. high coach told my mom "he runs like a deer!". Unfortunately never did anything with it and busted up my right knee years later riding motocross. Thanks for uploading this clip, added to my playlist!
Remember watching this with my parents when I was 5, Dad loved Sympathy for the devil and recorded it from this movie on the old school tape recorder. Got into classic rock because of this song
In 1997 my coach who was an old timer already gave me a VHS copy of The Jericho Mile before the county championships. My parents videotaped the race next to coach in the stands. On the backstretch of the final lap of my 1600m race all you can hear on the tape is coach screaming "Jericho....Jericho... Jericho!" I got 3rd place in 4:32, but the 2 guys that beat me were my teammates (we went 1,2 3) and now I realize he probably gave them a copy as well!
Best ending of a movie ever. Saw this the first time as a 12 year old boy. Never seen anything like it since. ” You best him man. You beat Davies”. Then the stop watch symbolyzing he Will never tear down the walls gets thrown in the wall. Just the best. This must have been Peter Strauss best Acting ever. I remember him playing more romantic movies other wise.
Finally running again after a injury laid me low and I put on a lot of weight,,now 6 stone lighter I'm running again....slower than a 3 legged donkey...but moving forward. awesome clip from an awesome movie.
Unforgettable as a 13 year old growin up in San Diego. Unforgettable at 59. Sure miss the days when my pops would take me and my brothers to the fliks.

I was a heavy teenager when I saw this film on its first run. I took an interest in running. I. Two months later I was running 3-4 miles a day. Also made me love the song.
“Has it ever struck you that life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quick you hardly catch it going?”― Tennessee Williams.
That was definitely a motivating movie for me. I didn't stay a runner but that movie let me know that with that drive and for me faith anything is possible.
I saw this movie with my Dad in the early 1980s, always remembered it. Michael Mann is one of the best. Caan was really good in "Thief", the precursor for another great Mann film, "'Heat". Both De Niro and Caan's characters are based on Chicago criminal Neil McCauley. The famous "Heat" warehouse scene where DeNiro has his crew walk really happened, but cops alerted him in a department store.
Have always rated this movie very highly. Peter Strauss carried the part of well. Always thought he was wasted in those turgid tv mini series they used to inflict upon us in the late 70's early 80's.

Ok... most of you are close. He had a chance to compete. The board asked him, if he felt remorse--he said same circumstance he would kill his father again. The board elected to keep him incarcerated. But he did beat Davies time, and this movie is just plain inspirational.
Greatest marriage of cinematography AND music .....1st) bongo drums 2) fender bass? 3) piano 4) electric guitar ...and especially 4) acuostic guitar @2:40 (mark) then the strings. I love the rawness and the power of the scene with virtually no dialouge. I cry everytime I watch this; right before I go running in my all-white neighborhood...Scaring the Sh!T out of my neighbors :0
The building I live in has long hallways. Anyway, the other day I was watching this and it hyped me up so much I grabbed my roomies Note 4 and started the timer. I took off out the door and ran the corridor as fast as I could and when I was about 15 feet from the door at the end of the hall I threw the Note 4. It smashed to bits. My roomie and I looked at each other and we had a good laugh.
It doesn’t get any better than this they cannot Capture the spirit and energy of this scene fcking incredible I wish there were stronger words to describe this scene but maybe it’s for the best bc I can keep it to myself lol...
He threw the watch because he realized he was the best. He no longer needed to prove this to anyone, only to himself. They can lock up his body, but not his humanity. His spirit. *Obvious Comment Guy* at your service.
I needed inspiration to get off my ass and try a 5k. I know there will be a lot of pain endured as I train but this vid is definitely inspirational. When my body is ready to quit i'll just envision the Jericho mile
@TheAthleteProject The movie was very well received when it was first aired. Made a lasting impression on the viewers who saw it, got nominated for Emmys (back when they meant something). The Jericho Mile is over the heads of audiences in 2010, who expect to see explosions, superheroes, or screaming teenagers.
I am a Villanova alum, age 71, and this story was written by a Villanova prof. I am still a runner but can't make my 4th of July 5k race this year because I lost valuable training time due to a bad tooth. So, once I am good-to-go again I'm going to run the route and time myself. against my former times. I hope I get to toss the stopwatch as Peter Strauss did. I found the story and movie inspirational, of course.
Watching this when I was younger did a couple things, one it got me into running, not competitively, but just for endurance and my heart and lungs for the sports I was playing --- and also, it humanized a lot of prisoners -- guys who got caught up in situations that had some grey area, but they made a choice to end somebody's life or otherwise break the law. People make bad choices, but people also make tough choices in horrible situations -- it's tragic. Would've been cool to see Murphy on a real track -- he had to always rock those tight turns at the end of that prison track -- with more straightaway his times would've been even faster.
Anyone that has seen this entire movie knows its quality. I understand RUclipss position but fact is dont let them slip by! If you have or can get the capability to capture do so. This rare jewel of a movie is gone unless someone can fill in the missing parts. This movie has "RockY" quality and then some, it should not fade away. What a shame!
He threw that watch, but its the slow mo scene of the watch hitting the wall that defines the reason. This is the 70's coming out of the 60's, so what was the spiritual hippie trip if you recall about time like the song for instance Time has come today.... Or in the movie easy Rider we're at the beginning he looks at his watch and pulls it off his wrist and takes one last look at it and then throws it to the ground and how the camera took a quick pan in and pan out move perhaps to signify time now starts officially, and at the hippie commune where the guy gave them some acid and told him at the right time and place to take it and dude looks at up and says yeah I'm real hip about time.... And going into the seventies that hippie trip about time moved over to more of the rugged blue jeans American freedom\outlaw trip, where time had basically the same meaning no different than super fly saying he just wants time to think his own thoughts and not be all burdened with time itself. Of course that stop watch is getting thrown after all that crap he went through because let's face it, everything he has went through as a result of time itself being used as punishment and something about that isn't right and maybe the Old testament had the right idea where the guy killed his father and despite whatever reason there may have been doesn't matter I for an eye and a tooth for a tooth and he dies along with his father which one could argue is certainly more justified when considering the torment of time itself being hung over his head and how is that rehabilitation that no matter how sorry is in rehabilitated he can never leave.
heard the stones version the other day and this movie popped into my head. was hoping someone had it on here. saw it only once on tv way back then...and it was good enough to stay in my head somewhere! i think it was suposed to be tv's answer to the longest yard, but with more heart....forget the demographics..just make tv movies like this again. brians song, the day after....come on, hollywood, you can do it...again!!
Peter Strauss was awesome in this! I can totally believe he is in prison, and I can almost totally believe he is capable of breaking the mile record. His Emmy was well deserved.
I was 19 years old, when this movie changed my life. It may have saved my life. Im still running today... having a good life.
love this

What is moral and what is legal are not always the same thing.
Something you can't lock up, the human spirit. Another Mann masterpiece...
"He beat it! He beat it man! He beat Davies!" Can't get enough of this great movie.
@Rain Murphy I think it was Davies' Olympic qualifying time of 3 minutes, 50.6 seconds that they announced on the radio at the start of the vid.
Saw this movie at age 10, and boy did it leave a mark on me. Running the mile for nobody but himself. I'm 43 years old now and I just started training for a marathon. Every time I think of quitting, I remember this scene, and the music! Gets me over the wall every time.

He threw the watch because he realized he was the best. He no longer needed to prove this to anyone, only to himself. They can lock up his body, but not his humanity. His spirit.
*Obvious Comment Guy* at your service.
No, wrong
Remember the guy who ran in Chariots of Fire. He said " When i run, i can feel God's pleasure"
I needed inspiration to get off my ass and try a 5k. I know there will be a lot of pain endured as I train but this vid is definitely inspirational. When my body is ready to quit i'll just envision the Jericho mile
Sometimes, when running, it feels like my feet aren't even touching the ground.
@TheAthleteProject The movie was very well received when it was first aired.
Made a lasting impression on the viewers who saw it,
got nominated for Emmys (back when they meant something).
The Jericho Mile is over the heads of audiences in 2010,
who expect to see explosions, superheroes, or screaming teenagers.
You're God damned right!
I also love it when the inmates start to give him their food...chokes me up every time
Great movie !!
Top 10 TV programming ever
