Without Limits

  • All of my life, man and boy, I have operated under the assumption that the main idea in running was to win the damn race. Actually when I became a coach I, I tried to teach people how to do that. I tried to teach Pre how to do that. I tried like hell to teach Pre to do that. And Pre taught me, taught me I was wrong. Pre, you see, was troubled by knowing that a mediocre effort can win a race. And a magnificent effort can lose one. Winning a race wouldn't necessarily demand that he give it everything he had from start to finish. He never ran any other way. I tried to get him to. God knows, I tried. But Pre was stubborn. He insisted on holding himself to a higher standard than victory. A race is a work of art. That's what he said. That's what he believed. And he was out to make it one every step of the way. Of course, he wanted to win. Those who saw him compete and those who competed against him were never in any doubt about how much he wanted to win. But how he won mattered to him more. Pre thought I was a hard case. But he finally got it through my head that the real purpose of running isn't to win a race. It's to test the limits of the human heart. And that he did. Nobody did it more often. Nobody did it better.

And Sutherland wasn't the first choice for the Bowerman role, but one cannot imagine anyone else doing it better in the end. Perfect.

If you read the book Bowerman and the Men of Oregon, this is exactly what they did for Pre's memorial service. I'm glad Hollywood did it as it happened. They tend to try and 'glamourize' things. The way Pre ran is such an inspiration.

Coach Bowerman coached Oregon well before Pre in the 50's and was sending track athletes from all fields to the Olympics. Most of his athletes just happened to be distance runners.

I've watched Pre run and I didn't like him very much at first, I thought he was cocky and arrogant but he began to grow on me, you might say he made a believer out of me and by the olympics he was my favorite runner. Now Ive run myself against some good runners in my day even frank shorter in one race, not that I was that good but none of them ever inspired me like pre did. He is not the bet runner Ive ever seen run but for sure was the guttiest. He gave all that he had.

Every American Track and Field athlete since Pre and his colleagues, owe them so much. If it was not for their fight against those who controlled what they competed. US Track and Field would not be what it is today.

Pretalks... well seeing your own national heroes can be inspiring:)) So it goes also in Europe. As a kid i was watching Lasse Viren in 1976 cross country national championships in Finland - Viren won. That day in that same race there was also Tapio Kantanen (4th in olympics), Martti Vainio (european champion 1978), Pekka Paivarinta (world cahmpion in cross country 1973)...

@@eviltwin3219 Amen to what you said. I see more runners and better runners every year. I am so proud that you who love him still remember him. He would have said, Me? What did I do?” He was as humble as anyone could be-goes along with the “Rube” name that Bowerman gave him. Only those closest to him would know that. I was. And am forever. He is all of my families hero forever. May you all keep his name out there as an example of what can be. Hugs to all of you.
