Willow has quite the motor! It's only in the last few years that I've thought about nuances in translations. It began when my sister gave me a copy of "The Good Earth" by Pearl S. Buck. She bought it Korea. This particular edition had been translated into English from Korean (which had been translated from English).
Well, it is well written. It does deal with a harsh time in China and brutal realities. But, yes, worth reading. Though I did need to read a simple romance with a happy ending afterwards.

And that's why basic broad Scots is a wonderful, warm language. The flow, the diction, the rhythm, the cadence...and the turns of phrase. I call my ain cat "a wee monkey" when he's being foolish... 11:00
I've just bought the Ready translation, I have P&V and Katz. I find the P&V's English somewhat clunky, especially in the Brothers Karamazov. Katz is OK, but American spelling is slightly irritating. Also the Ready is a beautiful volume.
Yeah, those Classic Deluxe editions are such a joy to read. And, honestly, I think that's as good a reason as any for picking a translation. I agree on the Katz. It just feels weird to have American spellings. I know it shouldn't, and it probably doesn't for American readers. Also the quality of the Liveright edition just doesn't do it for me.
@@battybibliophile-Clare It's 99p on Kindle! I just got that to have for travelling. I have War and Peace and Tale of Genji on Kindle too for the same reason. I travel sometimes twice a week to accompany my son to school on the mainland.
"Два билетика" - я думаю речь идет о кредитных билетах - это название банкнот. "Государственные кредитные билеты" в России разновидность бумажных денежных знаков.
Yeah, possibly. Although I would imagine that Larissa Volokhonskaya would have been aware of кредитные билеты, and in their translation they've chosen to go with roubles. It just illustrates the kind of challenges that translators have to deal with.

Those are the most gorgeous meows I've ever heard from a cat. And hell of a motor♥ I might go for Pevear and Volokhonsky (I like the cover) as the main in paperback form, but I'd like to also get Ready and Garnet translation in Kindle as a reference.

The good earth is one of the greatest novels ever, primarily because it has one of the most poignant characters ever conjured. Seriously, read it!
