Great video, very entertaining! Auditory and visual learners, particularly those who may have neurodivergent traits or who were raised in some types of environments, will have a much stronger ability to not only learn new languages, but to learn them fluently and even mimic mannerisms! There's something called 'mirror neurons' in our brains, and for people who learn in those ways mentioned above, they are much stronger/more numerous (the neurons). These 'mirrors' in the brain are what allow people like Dogen to not just enter a new culture/society like that in Japan, but to 'fit in' much easier through this natural mimicry! Basically, by spending more and more time in Japan, and having a natural affinity for the cultural norms, Dogen (and people like them) are able to sort of ABSORB the particulars of how people culturally act/speak/move. They 'mirror' the people around them as they enmesh into their communities, and slowly their brains will pick up on the differences and begin to utilize them to aid in a sense of connection/cooperation/safety. There's a whole study on this sort of thing in psychology that we looked at in one of my university courses! It's really interesting, but it's what leads to people like Dogen being able to seem 'more like' a non-native culture than their own! It's fascinating to see, thank you for bringing it up to speak on it and for doing the interview to display this impressive skill. :)

Do you find the Japanese language difficult compared to English? I'm also autistic and always hear that so much of speaking Japanese is about picking up on social cues. So I've never attempted to learn it.
i want to give some clarity after having tried to have conversations with probably thousands of japanese, old/young/man/woman/obachan not all of them are like this but a large majority of them are: extremely, extremely sensitive, overthinking everything so much they often get the complete wrong perspective on what you mean or what you may be thinking the level of insecurity i have witnessed, is about as "you wouldnt believe it unless youve seen it" as it gets let me be clear how bad it is, im having a good conversation with some japanese guy, he is relaxed, we are chill, i am avoiding any kind of lighthearted teasing or joking that might make him anxious (yes. really. us americans are actually very mean, please be careful.) anyways im having a good conversation, and i try to compliment his english confidence by saying "usually japanese people seem very shy, or they leave quickly, but youre very chill" they get a nervous expression, get real quiet after that, and then leave. over a very slightly negative comment, about other people. this isnt a specific story, this has happened to me more than several times now specifically. let me be absolutely clear, japanese people are "shocked" by everything. almost a forced reaction it feels. imagine how easy it is to offend people, just remember, not all japanese people are like this. some of the coolest chillest people ive met are japanese. but also remember: mainstream audiences are very unintelligent/surface level. the odds that anyone is actually doing anything socially harmful is slim to absolutely nothing these people think chi gyuu is a form of harrassment and bullying ok? this is like, when we americans made it so kids can be arrested for fighting in school, the absolute ignorance, ofcourse kids are going to fight in school, they are kids, they have hormones, emotions, no life experience, but punished seemingly for life (effecting school and then effecting job/future) the real problem is since abput 10 years ago or so, the entire world seems to have forgotten the internet is not a real place, and the people on it are not behaving as they would in their normal day to day.
Even though your stuff is quite exaggerated (and hilarious cause of it) I use it for my Japanese listening comprehension cause it’s still more natural than stilted textbook talk and the fact it’s entertain is just a cherry on top!
I don’t speak Japanese, but I lived in the Middle East for years. When I was talking to locals, I would think in Arabic when having conversations. When I spoke to other Westerners, I would think in English. I’m assuming that’s what he meant when he said it depends on the situation. "People who grew up in Japan tend to glance down during conversations" 😅
As an autistic japanese american I'm glad to hear that I won't stand out when I go to japan
Do you find the Japanese language difficult compared to English? I'm also autistic and always hear that so much of speaking Japanese is about picking up on social cues. So I've never attempted to learn it.
My favourite sketch of his is the one with the difference between taking a train in Tokyo and taking a train in the countryside.
Hi KJ!
I adore listen to Sora speak. For a few minutes, I feel like I actually know something.
i want to give some clarity after having tried to have conversations with probably thousands of japanese, old/young/man/woman/obachan
not all of them are like this but a large majority of them are: extremely, extremely sensitive, overthinking everything so much they often get the complete wrong perspective on what you mean or what you may be thinking
the level of insecurity i have witnessed, is about as "you wouldnt believe it unless youve seen it" as it gets
let me be clear how bad it is,
im having a good conversation with some japanese guy, he is relaxed, we are chill, i am avoiding any kind of lighthearted teasing or joking that might make him anxious (yes. really. us americans are actually very mean, please be careful.)
anyways im having a good conversation, and i try to compliment his english confidence by saying "usually japanese people seem very shy, or they leave quickly, but youre very chill"
they get a nervous expression, get real quiet after that, and then leave.
over a very slightly negative comment, about other people.
this isnt a specific story, this has happened to me more than several times now specifically.
let me be absolutely clear, japanese people are "shocked" by everything. almost a forced reaction it feels.
imagine how easy it is to offend people,
just remember, not all japanese people are like this. some of the coolest chillest people ive met are japanese.
but also remember: mainstream audiences are very unintelligent/surface level.
the odds that anyone is actually doing anything socially harmful is slim to absolutely nothing
these people think chi gyuu is a form of harrassment and bullying ok?
this is like, when we americans made it so kids can be arrested for fighting in school, the absolute ignorance,
ofcourse kids are going to fight in school, they are kids, they have hormones, emotions, no life experience, but punished seemingly for life (effecting school and then effecting job/future)
the real problem is since abput 10 years ago or so, the entire world seems to have forgotten the internet is not a real place, and the people on it are not behaving as they would in their normal day to day.
At 7:08 I was almost expecting the dreaded "キモッ😶"
That 180 degree bow would require zero belly fat.
So nice for Japanese Dogen to comment on an American’s video!”
Even though your stuff is quite exaggerated (and hilarious cause of it) I use it for my Japanese listening comprehension cause it’s still more natural than stilted textbook talk and the fact it’s entertain is just a cherry on top!
Dogen: - opens his mouth -
People: - laugh hiysterically -
Dogen situation is crazy
Bro this is gold
Dogen’s English has gotten a lot better. And Sora’s Japanese has gotten better. Keep practicing you guys.
I don’t speak Japanese, but I lived in the Middle East for years. When I was talking to locals, I would think in Arabic when having conversations. When I spoke to other Westerners, I would think in English. I’m assuming that’s what he meant when he said it depends on the situation. You stop translating in your mind and think in the other language once you get comfortable.
9:32 That's just the two kinds of people. Not every American is confident, especially in the modern day where social anxiety is trendy
the situation is insane
Damn. Once again, the ai knows me better than I know myself. I didn't know these two people existed, and now I can't live without them. Troll recognizes troll.
This guys flashbacks are straight anime hahahaha so good
Dogen is looking down when speaking with people because he is like 8 feet tall giant 😆🤣😂
