    He is probably an introvert with a tendency to observe, a lot, in detail. That is usually how you get folks like him who integrate so well that if it weren't for their appearance, you wouldn't know they aren't from that country. Being so introverted that you do not want to stand out at all and thus do absolutely everything possible to blend in as much as possible.

    Dogen is an interesting example of what happens with a lot of students of Japanese who aim for a level of perfection, but don’t actually really engage with Japanese people in the end. His ability to communicate is amazing, but it’s sad to hear that all of that experience and knowledge has not brought him closer to the culture and engaging directly with many Japanese people in his daily life.

      He doesn't work a job with other Japanese people. And it's not like people tend to randomly start up conversations with strangers, particularly foreigners. The people who do tend to want to do so to practice their own English. So where are the opportunities to engage with Japanese people in his daily life? It's not even uncommon for Japanese people to not engage directly with Japanese people in their daily life.

    • @rui5421
      @rui5421 Месяц назад +27

      @@zeidrichthoreneanywhere. As someone else said it might be a introvert thing, but it’s not a matter of striking up conversation with strangers, (which does happen) it’s about creating a social circle. His social circle exists and based on recent videos it seems like his circle is other English speaking Japan content creators. He could make Japanese friends or business acquaintances anywhere, but he apparently hasn’t made that circle or doesn’t feel it’s necessary. Nothing wrong with that, but it’s an odd contrast given he’s specializing in Japanese language and culture while not seemingly actually engaging in it much.

    • @BenMConner
      @BenMConner Месяц назад +7

      I was speaking with a friend recently, and it’s a very American thing to make friends with random strangers. I think when you’re living as a Japanese person, you tend to be more insular and keep to yourself in general. But when I’ve traveled over there because of my Americanness I tend to make a lot of friends because I’m very open and talkative, which is out of character for a lot of Japanese people but totally normal for an American.

    Great video, very entertaining!
    Auditory and visual learners, particularly those who may have neurodivergent traits or who were raised in some types of environments, will have a much stronger ability to not only learn new languages, but to learn them fluently and even mimic mannerisms!
    There's something called 'mirror neurons' in our brains, and for people who learn in those ways mentioned above, they are much stronger/more numerous (the neurons). These 'mirrors' in the brain are what allow people like Dogen to not just enter a new culture/society like that in Japan, but to 'fit in' much easier through this natural mimicry!
    Basically, by spending more and more time in Japan, and having a natural affinity for the cultural norms, Dogen (and people like them) are able to sort of ABSORB the particulars of how people culturally act/speak/move. They 'mirror' the people around them as they enmesh into their communities, and slowly their brains will pick up on the differences and begin to utilize them to aid in a sense of connection/cooperation/safety.
    There's a whole study on this sort of thing in psychology that we looked at in one of my university courses! It's really interesting, but it's what leads to people like Dogen being able to seem 'more like' a non-native culture than their own!
    It's fascinating to see, thank you for bringing it up to speak on it and for doing the interview to display this impressive skill. :)

At 4 years I was doing realtime interpretation at my work (not my job, It was just something I could do) and people thought I was Japanese over the phone. I know other people who did similar, but the higher the age they started, the less able they were to become naturally sounding fluent. I've been fluent for 30 years but Dogen takes the cake. His skits are full of very subtle humour that you can easily miss, and has me cracking up every time. He reminds me that I don't speak enough these days and am getting a little rusty!

    Americajin here. 4:18 - Pronouncing authentic Japanese-English (such as “mochibeishon”) is easy: You just have to _spell_ it in kana in your mind. Then it sounds itself out naturally.

    • @Stabichan

      the emphasis in japanese english may not be the same as in pure english, so there's that trap too. But imo, the hard part is to fluently use the right japanese english words are the right time. you have to know which words japanese people are actually switching with the english version of/and when.

    Looking down or away during a conversation isn't just a thing Japanese people do. it's something shy or introverted people do. I know, because I'm generally both. And, I'm American.

    • @Redpoppy80
      @Redpoppy80 Месяц назад +12

      That is true but the American culture itself is very direct and confrontational. Japanese have for the most part taken a non-confrontational stance. Obviously, this is painting in very broad strokes and should not be taken as a given but more of a base line when interacting.

      eye contact is so hard, it either feels like i'm awkward, or too aggressive/intense. some people can pull off 100% eye contact without seeming intense or imposing, some people can have like 40% eye contact and not seem awkward. i'm neither lmao

  • @Baka_Crazy
    @Baka_Crazy Месяц назад +24

    I'm from Germany and I also think that excessive eye contact is so aggressive to me. But especially older people see that as rude when I don't look constantly in their eyes during a conversation. I hate eye contact so much!

      @southcoastinventors6583 Idk it's considered to be polite to keep eye contact with a person while talking. So people can assume that you're following the conversation. But I think it's creepy and exhausting

    Also I don't know why but i was sure you had already met the guy before. But they could be someone else like Yuta or Saito, don't remember.

    i want to give some clarity after having tried to have conversations with probably thousands of japanese, old/young/man/woman/obachan
    not all of them are like this but a large majority of them are: extremely, extremely sensitive, overthinking everything so much they often get the complete wrong perspective on what you mean or what you may be thinking
    the level of insecurity i have witnessed, is about as "you wouldnt believe it unless youve seen it" as it gets
    let me be clear how bad it is,
    im having a good conversation with some japanese guy, he is relaxed, we are chill, i am avoiding any kind of lighthearted teasing or joking that might make him anxious (yes. really. us americans are actually very mean, please be careful.)
    anyways im having a good conversation, and i try to compliment his english confidence by saying "usually japanese people seem very shy, or they leave quickly, but youre very chill"
    they get a nervous expression, get real quiet after that, and then leave.
    over a very slightly negative comment, about other people.
    this isnt a specific story, this has happened to me more than several times now specifically.
    let me be absolutely clear, japanese people are "shocked" by everything. almost a forced reaction it feels.
    imagine how easy it is to offend people,
    just remember, not all japanese people are like this. some of the coolest chillest people ive met are japanese.
    but also remember: mainstream audiences are very unintelligent/surface level.
    the odds that anyone is actually doing anything socially harmful is slim to absolutely nothing
    these people think chi gyuu is a form of harrassment and bullying ok?
    this is like, when we americans made it so kids can be arrested for fighting in school, the absolute ignorance,
    ofcourse kids are going to fight in school, they are kids, they have hormones, emotions, no life experience, but punished seemingly for life (effecting school and then effecting job/future)
    the real problem is since abput 10 years ago or so, the entire world seems to have forgotten the internet is not a real place, and the people on it are not behaving as they would in their normal day to day.

    I don’t speak Japanese, but I lived in the Middle East for years. When I was talking to locals, I would think in Arabic when having conversations. When I spoke to other Westerners, I would think in English. I’m assuming that’s what he meant when he said it depends on the situation. You stop translating in your mind and think in the other language once you get comfortable.
