  • On October 9, 1989, ignoring the threat of violence against them, over 70,000 people took to the streets of Leipzig to peacefully demand more freedom and democracy in East Germany. Armed only with candles in their hands, they stood up to the authorities and helped launch the peaceful revolution that finally led to the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.
These events are still an encouragement to people, and the memory of that day is kept alive in Leipzig today through Lichtfest - the Festival of Lights. Held every year on October 9, it serves as a reminder of the power of prayer and of the people, and is celebrated and remembered with various exhibits and the lighting and carrying of candles. It is a moving event, one that is worth attending and setting aside as a time to reflect on the past and hope for the future.

About us: One year ago, after a long time of hoping, dreaming, and planning, we sold or gave away almost everything we owned and left the United States to begin our journey with four children as an expat family. We moved to Leipzig, Germany, a beautiful city in the state of Saxony. This is our story.

This was our second time visiting Lichtfest Leipzig. It is always a great evening to stop, reflect, and remember. Especially with all of the craziness in the world, times of reflection become even more important as we look to the future.
Have you ever been to Lichtfest before? What did you think of it?

Wow, that brought memories. I was born in East-Germany, but we excaped when I was 8 years old and I now live in Canada. I remember when I was sitting on the TV all day and night, watching was was happening. December 1989 was my parents 50s Anniversary and I went to visit them in Nuernberg, where they lived after we excaped. And the relatives from the East were able to visit for the first time. I can't believe it was that long ago. Thanks for the memories.

Thank you for sharing that story! Glad our video could bring some good memories for you. Living here in former East Germany has certainly given us some new perspectives on the history here.
We recently visited Nürnberg (and we have a video from there too) and we loved the city, although I'm sure it looks different now compared to 1989!

I went this year again and the Lichtfest has changed a lot. The 89 was usally in the Augustplatz and there where less people I think because there where 3 stations in the city. Also the march around the city didn't happend, it always felt like a demonstration is happening.
History wise the people not only demonstrated for free speech, travel...while the police threat with violence but they risk there lifes because they police had an order to shot (read that in the Nikolai church).

I only have last year and this year to compare, but even these two events were quite different. (I have to admit, I found last year's Lichtfest much more moving than this year). I must have forgotten to mention the order to shoot that the police had. I remember reading about it and it really puts it into a different perspective.

Den March um die City herum gibt es nur alle 5 Jahre beim "großen" Lichterfest. Also erst wieder 2024.
