Percy wasn’t aware of the demon. “An unspoken partnership,” is what the demon said. Even in-game, the player didn’t know what was going on until the reveal. Vax and Keileth are both half-elves. :)
My thoughts on the demons control being severed from Percival when he shot himself was that he had broken the "contract" between them by firing and hitting someone who wasn't the target (named on the gun) so he had to temporarily retreat...have loved this series and even the head Canon for piecing together such things is so fun. Been a div player for many years and just recently got into dnd but have always been a tbs or ttrpg player.
Correct. Sam & Travis have said that they carefully tracked his bullets all season, and Percy never shot more than 6. Any other time, Percy wasn't in control.
Percy did not even know about the deal. Demons don't really care about details like that. In DnD, Demons and Devils are different. Devils are the sticklers for details. Demons don't really care about consent. They just grab any excuse to cause as much destruction as possible.
Vengeance demons apparently are different than other demons. Devils are contractual, whereas demons are chaos. Vengeance demons canonically make deals. That's how they get their power. They just conveniently leave out the downside to their deals.
The reveal of Orthax having possession of Percy is a great reveal. For all these episodes we just think it's No Mercy Percy seeking righteous vengeance and we cheer him on, then we realize how far gone Percy is and can look back at how we also basically cheered on a demon of bloodthirsty vengeance lol YIKES!
Yep. And how long that demon had been waiting. Matt has said the demon was there since the dream about the pepperbox. Orthax waited years to start really affecting Percy. Prior to the Briarwoods in Emon, it laid dormant and wasn't affecting his psyche yet. There was actually a thought his player had that if the rest of Vox Machina hadn't stopped him, Percy would've become a recurring villain.
Congrats on finishing season 1! Now comes the mind-blowing journey that is season 2. Strap in and secure all overhead luggage for one of the craziest seasons of TV.
On the point of Percy basically having unlimited ammo that was thanks to the demon empowering the weapon. They hinted at this when Percy killed Stonefell as Percy shot him 7 times even though his weapon only had 6 barrels.
You're right I think the dragons turning up was really close to the solstice ritual Delilah was meant to do. The tree teleportation got them home really quick and Matt tends to make very dramatic things happen on solstices. The cast is so familiar with movie/tv tropes being directors and actors that I think Sam did suspect that the gun still had a demon in it, it was 100% a guess but making items in d&d takes a lot of time and ingame buying supplies so I understand the frustration of loosing it.
Even more than it being magic, the gun had two different enchantments on it. That's an insane amount of time, energy, and money spent on this thing. Sam admitted (I think in the campaign wrap-up) that he didn't know the weapon was magic. It really was a guess that it would work, and even if it didn't Percy could just make another. I don't think they ever had enough time for him to make another.
The sigil you mentioned is the symbol of Tiamat, goddess of evil dragons. She has five heads. Dragons of different colours have different abilities. Also, dragons get stronger as they get older. Brimscythe was basically an older teen/young adult. These are ancient.

Keyleth notably though doesn't say she isn't interested- she just thinks it would interfere with/is not as important as Work/Responsibilities- also recall she struggles like heck with self-confidence, especially regarding the expectations she feels her people have for her. And is also basically a rural small town homeschooled girl who's only been in the big wide world (or you could say adventuring university) for only a year or so. Apparently, with Tal'Dorei, the xenophobia isn't as common. Matt's touched on it at different times when asked, but basically, there are only a few places that still treat half elves as social outcasts.
Dude, the reactions to this episode from you two was so worth the watch :). I was loving how impressed and "woh"ed you were especially at the climax of this series in showing No Mercy Percy for who and what they truly were for this. That was awesome. The guy playing Percy had NO CLUE that Mat took his small idea at the beginning and turned it into - THIS - . Like this was unexpected and utterly shocking to him and the crew when Mat Mercer brought this out. And to see you react like everyone else... it was truly jaw dropping and this is so cool... can't wait to see season 2 with you two :D
As a critter it really excites me to see yall enjoying this show that means so much to our community. You guys are really attentive to the details the show gives. I love that. Ill definitely be back to watch yall react to season 3!
Remember that eye that called Vox machina “intruders” when they entered Brimscythe’s Lair? And the Sovereign believing Brimscythe was part of a larger plot, before Vox machina ever met the Briarwoods? Brimscythe said “there was a time before where we, dragons ruled all of taldorei”. It was Lady Allura (and Lady Kima) the blonde woman and her red head halfing girlfriend who are a part of the council that who where the ones that fought a red dragon “years ago”. Also the solstice where the planes got closer, the briarwoods used it to summon something. Who’s to say others in the world took advantage of the solstice as well.
You both are so observant, I'm impressed you remembered the sigil from episode 2! Of the other reactions I've watched (a lot) I don't think anyone else has picked that up on first watch. Excited to see you keep putting the pieces together in s2 :D
Another fun reaction with you two, always excited to see them pop up on my feed! Now that you're this far in, I can spoiler-free point out one of the subtle details they put into this show. When Percy is letting the demon be in control, not only does he have unlimited ammo like others said, but also shoots with the opposite hand! As for the dragons, Brimscythe was a young adult by D&D standards (350-400 years old). Those four are all ancient (800+ years) and are, individually, each a flying apocalypse in terms of raw power. Together they make Delilah and Silas look like Mary Poppins and Dick Van Dyke. 🤣
Love the reaction and can't wait for Season 2. We Critters are easy to please. We just want other people to enjoy and discover the awesomeness of Critical Role. We would love to see a reaction to the livestream stuff
Well depends. Since campaign 2 he critters became quite toxic, ofc cr pandering helped it s rise a lot. I remember during c1 every voice and opion was welcomed. Sadly thats no longer the case. Politocs seep into everything. Smh.
When they return to town, Vex calls Keyleth Kiki, Vax's nickname for her. It's a great way for the show to show that Vex has come to appreciate Keyleth, and is coming out of her fear of Keyleth taking Vax away. Addition: Vax saying "I'm going to walk away" is another fun easter egg for the campaign. Since everything is "theater of the mind", Liam (Vax's player) would often indicate that a conversation was over by saying "And I walk away." He got to say it in the show too and it served the same function, ending a conversation.
Percy was legit going to dive into the acid after it. They had to cast a hold spell on him to keep him from dissolving himself. Taliesin's expression was like a kid watching an ice cream cake left out in a warm rain shower. It was wondrous.
Doesn’t help that in the game he has sort a lot of time and money to get two of the six barrels of that gun enchanted you do mágica fire and ice damage. Not an easy or cheep thing to do
18:29 So Vex, Vax and Keyleth are all half elves, though in the twins' case they have an elven father and a human mother and Keylth has two half elf parents. As for the fantasy racism of the situation... well, kinda, but not really. Keyleth's people, the Ashari, are a very varied group of lots of different races, there's not much in the way of racism there. Vax's background's a little different, but they'll get into that more in the show, so I won't spoil anything. But suffice it to say, right now Keyleth's reasons for turning Vax down are partially what she said, that she's too worried about her own responsibilities to focus on a relationship atm, and partially something that, again, they'll explore a bit more in the show.
I love how everyone forgets that Vox Machina got named to the Council in second episode. It makes their expressions of surprise when he gives the council power so much funnier. Keyleth is from a tribe (air) of the Ashari, which are made up of many races and are a tolerant society. In order to be their leader she has to travel to the other elemental tribes to introduce herself and prove herself through challenges. She cannot return home unless she passes all the tests. Her mother went on the same journey and never returned. To this point in the story Keyleth has no idea what happened to her. If she died in a challenge or just in the wider world, or did she just give up and settle elsewhere? The uncertainty is part of Keyleth’s issues.
It's funny, in a way. Keyleth always had the option of giving up her aramente and going home. That's part of the rules for the aramente. It's always seemed like Keyleth is aware of what happens to druids at higher levels. A large fear that makes close connections difficult.
For Orthax to enter into an agreement all he had to is say, "Say no if you don't want revenge." He doesn't have to go say the word yes for that agreement to be complete. It's silent assent. Because he didn't show any magic until the Brairwoods showed. In the campaign everybody was shocked when he cast hex for the first time.
Uriel isn't actually retiring per se. He said he was ceding power to the council, which he is probably part of. He is simply making sure that one person can't overrule everyone else.
Originally, Delilah lost an arm... but realistically, she would've bled out. As usual, things went less dramatically than this, except for her death. She never had a final gambit, she just wanted to die. When Cassandra approached, she told her, "You could have been my daughter." Cassandra replied, "No. Cassandra is a deRolo. And you took them away from me. Now we're taking everything away from you," before running her through. Cassandra went through a lot more mindfuckery than was presented in this version; and after she betrayed the second uprising, some residents of Whitestone were slow to trust her again. She does *not* want to be in charge of Whitestone, but her brother keeps going off on adventures... I'll get into the dragons, next time. Meanwhile, there must be a supercut of all the conversations Keyleth had with the Sun Tree. You should watch them at some point, it's pretty trippy - kinda literally - but maybe wait until after the second season.
The sigil they saw had five dragons in different colors: blue, green, red, white, black. VM killed a blue dragon. Four more are rolling up now. Also remember, Brimscythe/Krieg's plan was to get Uriel to send his armies out of Emon, which would leave it defenseless, probably something that it would only take a single dragon to take over.
Dude i love how many people are enjoying this series, from watching the Tabletop Version on twitch from the beginning to campaign 3. Ive had the pleasure of seeing it all live. But animated?! It just feels so much more real. 🥺 honestly, you guys are in for a great ride! Im jealous you get to watch it blind! Hahaha.
When Percy get possessed, he actually doesn't have to reload his weapon, the Demon putting the ammunition directly in the gun. Which means, that normally, he can only fire six times, and Orthax can fire indefinitely.
I'm sure everyone have seen this at this point but this is part of the inspiration of how Percy will forever see himself after inventing a new type of weapon with the guns. Oppenheimer on the first successful atomic bomb test. ruclips.net/video/lb13ynu3Iac/видео.html
It's interesting that Percy knew exactly what he was releasing on the world. He knew the cost. He knew thousands would die to what he was creating. And he thought the cost was worth it. No demon meddling in his thought process. That's something his player has talked about many times, and it clearly told me how much he was willing to sacrifice in order to get what he wanted.
On the point of a dragon being hidden in the council. That dragon was brimscythe who they killed in an episode two. The only thing I will say here is… strap him and hold on tight. Many things yet to come.
You'd THINK Percy would have been able to make another gun like the List, but no, he just took Ripley's instead - in the game version of the story. His wasn't just the first gun ever, he also was able to bind two enchantments to two barrels (extra fire and ice damage respectively) despite him not being a magic user. Without Orthax's help he didn't have the time nor could he justify the cost of doing it again when he was no longer obsessed with vengeance. In the game version, Percy had been hunting Ripley since before he met Vox Machina, which is why she knew about Percy's gun and had decided to make her own. That's how she lost her hand.
To understand part of Keyleth's reluctance to be with Vax, you have to understand a druid's relationship with time. As druids become more powerful they start to age slower. By the time they reach archdruid level they age 1 year for every 10 years. So it's entirely possible for a druid to live to be 1000 years old. So knowing that she would outlive all of Vox Machina weighs on her.
Yes, we had to wait for a year for season 2 and the next arc! These dragons are terrifying, they are much stronger than Brimsythe was. And you`re one of a very, very few reactors who acknowledged Uriel`s retire. i also was very sad because of his decision, even though I knew everything from the campaign. But there`s logic in his words: a whole council of rulers is not as easily mind-controlled as one king (who also usually has an absolute power). Poor Vax, this is the second time he chooses the _wrong_ moment to talk to Kiki. It`s very interesting to watch your reactions, because you both notice *a ton* of foreshadowing and small thrown-out phrases and build theories on them and interpret things *correctly* most of the time, to the point I start to think that you may have catched spoilers somewhere.... and then you say something absolutely off, which would be obvious to those who have watched the campaign :DDDD I don`t even want to correct your mistakes, because 1) your thoughts are so cool and interesting, and 2) you`ll get your answers anyway, I don`t want to spoil anything.
Season 2 makes so many good callbacks to season 1. A lot of meaningful lines get turned around or said by other characters. Such great writing by the animation team.
The movie was very well received when it was released and Batmania was sweeping the nation. No one had any issues with Batman getting his ass handed to him by anonymous henchman # 5. Billy Dee was chosen by Burton personally bc he was going to have BDW become Two Face in Batman Returns
So im not 100 percent about this but pretty sure those dragons at the end are like elders ans like thw most powerful of the deagons of each type, storm dragon (the one the killed at tbe start of tbe seaso), frost dragon , poisen ragon , acid dragon and fire dragon ...
I think I can safely tell you that the timing of the dragon attack had nothing to do with Uriel's proclamation, but everything with the solstice ;) And I would DEF watch your reactions to the origin videos :)
... did it? I can't remember any connection to the solstice from the canpaign. I think the solstice was already past by the time they got back to Emon, they spent like a week or two in Whitestone after the fight with the Briarwoods.
@@theanyktos They spent 2 weeks in Whitestone in the lead up to Winterscrest, after Ethan they returned to Emon and it was 6 days between the solstice and the attack. I guess red and green were just....hanging out somewhere waiting for the others to show up?

Yeah, I think we all had a "OH SHIT" upon seeing multiple dragons. At least you dont have to wait a year!
Cass dragging and stabbing/ killing Delilah was definitely the cherry on top I needed to absolutely love her character
Cass has a good sword arm!
15:00 I think that the point is that it is a lot easier to mind control one individual than a whole bunch of people.
These have become the reactions I look most forward to in the week.
17:15 A demon killed in the material world is only sent back to it's home dimension.
Precisely. Apparently there are a few other ways to kill some demons on the material plane, but it's not consistent across all of them.
@@ShadowyFox_86 well trapping them in an item and destroying an item is not one of those as I recall.
I _love_ the Easy Bake Coven shirt. 😀😀
OOOOH THIS EPISODE!!!!! I can't wait to see your reaction to this episode! *settles in*
In the game, Percy never forgave Scalan for destroying his gun.
Taliesin STILL gives Sam shit about it 2 campaigns later lol
Percy was legit going to dive into the acid after it. They had to cast a hold spell on him to keep him from dissolving himself. Taliesin's expression was like a kid watching an ice cream cake left out in a warm rain shower. It was wondrous.
Doesn’t help that in the game he has sort a lot of time and money to get two of the six barrels of that gun enchanted you do mágica fire and ice damage. Not an easy or cheep thing to do
“You were never mother’s favorite”
@@bandi138138 "she told me!"
With the Briarwood arc finished, we now enter... The Chroma Conclave.
Y'all are the absolute cutest!! Such a joy to binge with you all
For Orthax to enter into an agreement all he had to is say, "Say no if you don't want revenge." He doesn't have to go say the word yes for that agreement to be complete.
Unless they're changing from the live play, retiring is exactly what he's doing. He was never part of the council. The council advised him.
Absolutely would love to see ya'll react to some of the in-game moments. The cast is amazing and it's a lot of fun. Can't wait for season 2!
Can't wait to see you guys watch season 2! It gets crazy intense!
Hahaha.
That cliffhanger really was crazy
We had to wait a YEAR 😩
When Percy get possessed, he actually doesn't have to reload his weapon, the Demon putting the ammunition directly in the gun. Which means, that normally, he can only fire six times, and Orthax can fire indefinitely.
When the demon is in control its unlimited ammo in the gun.
I envy you , you did not have a year to wait for season 2
You might want to watch Scanlan's musical recap of season 1 before you start season 2. We'd love to see your reaction to that.
Hell yeah!
Man I can't wait for season 4, no joke. Critters know. Season 2 is bangin though and 3 is going to be even crazier :D
Sadly, Percy is never able to make another gun like the List. Two different magical enchantments caused it to be expensive and time consuming to make.
Looking forward to you watching season 2!
Enjoying you guys immensely, but with such a nice-looking mic I don’t get why all your audio has that high buzz.
I don't have any high buzz on mine.
Season 2...GO!!! 😂
No more No Mercy Percy?
Percy just chooses that mode now. :) No demon needed.
Believe it or not season 2 is even better in almost every way so if you liked season 1 then season 2 will blow you away.
Season 2 makes so many good callbacks to season 1. A lot of meaningful lines get turned around or said by other characters. Such great writing by the animation team.
Way more trinket in season 2, just saying.
I think I can safely tell you that the timing of the dragon attack had nothing to do with Uriel's proclamation, but everything with the solstice ;)
And I would DEF watch your reactions to the origin videos :)
... did it? I can't remember any connection to the solstice from the canpaign. I think the solstice was already past by the time they got back to Emon, they spent like a week or two in Whitestone after the fight with the Briarwoods.
@@theanyktos That was when a certain someone was freed from a certain elemental plane. Gathering the rest and heading to Emon might've taken a bit.
@@rhokesh4391 Oh, really? Was that said in game? I guess I have to go back and rewatch that arc, poor me XD
@@theanyktos Either said or heavily implied, around the time they went to the *ahem* volcano. I think^^°
@@theanyktos They spent 2 weeks in Whitestone in the lead up to Winterscrest, after Ethan they returned to Emon and it was 6 days between the solstice and the attack. I guess red and green were just....hanging out somewhere waiting for the others to show up?
