    Percy put his hand over the barrel, trying to stop or throw off the shot. It's the ultimate expression of letting go of his vengeance and hate: making a move to SAVE Delilah. THAT is what drove Orthax out.

    • @Apollyon88
      @Apollyon88 2 года назад +18

      This makes sense. My rationalization was that the gun extracted souls for Orthax when Percy was channeling him, so shooting himself in No Mercy mode pulled out the demon in the same way.

    • @derdox6720
      @derdox6720 2 года назад +12

      my interpretation was that since the demon said himself that they had entered an unspoken contract, he probably broke it by hurting percy, but i like yours better

    • @sadlobster1
      @sadlobster1 2 года назад +3

      We all heard of magical totems, yeah; items that are linked to specific beings in faith or nature?
      My theory is that the gun was Orthax's totem (in a way,) since Percy crafted it as a tool of revenge. Percy choosing to hurt himself drove the demon back...but by throwing the gun into the acid pit, he was destroyed completely

    • @arandomnamegoeshere
      @arandomnamegoeshere 2 года назад +6

      Agreed. I would add that the whole gambit of a demon is to collect corrupt souls. Enabling Percy's quest for vengeance gives Orthax ample opportunity to collect corrupted souls as Percy kills his targets. But even more - it gives the demon the opportunity to corrupt Percy himself. That "sixth barrel" shadow wasn't just about Percy turning the gun on himself, it indicated that Percy's corruption (and collection of that soul) was the ultimate pay-day for Orthax.
      Orthax almost had it all. In those final moments, for that brief time, Percy was willing to turn his gun on his friends. But he pulled back from the brink. And when Percy used his own body to block even the very shot that would satisfy his deepest desires for vengeance... well... Orthax knew it had overplayed its hand. I don't think it was defeated or broken. It simply chose to deceive; to appear defeated. Given time... Orthax would have picked up where it left off... driving Percy again until it had achieved its goal.
      And then an agent of chaos tossed the embodiment of Orthax's pact in to a pool of acid.

    You two could absolutely pull off a Uriel and Salda Tal'dorei* cosplay. :)
    Maybe for a Halloween video/reaction (or just for a RL offline party), so you have some time to get all the clothes and accessories made/bought.
    Very nice reaction as well, as usual. :)
    *Technically Uriel rules the Tal'dorei empire (though many of the larger cities has a lot of independence in how they conduct their daily affairs) and counts as an Emperor, but by tradition from the founding of the empire, the ruler (male or female) bears the title Sovereign.
    The ruler's consort, if they have one, is titled Emperor/Empress though, hence Sovereign Uriel and Empress Salda, with the family name being Tal'dorei. The empire was named after the founder's last name.

    In the stream series Vex was flying after drinking a potion of flying and Deliah used a Finger of Death spell on her. The thing about this spell is that if it brings you down to 0 or lower hit points you immediately come back as a zombie under control of the caster. Now turns were happening fast at this point and Vex had drank a healing potion earlier but had not rolled for the amount of HP it restored yet. So Matt rolled for the damage on Deliah's spell which was massive (75) and had everyone worried but when they caught up on the math, it turned out that Vex had 1 HP left and everyone's jaw dropped. Of course the problem then became when that orb appeared, all magic stopped working in a certain radius which meant Vex who was magically flying around with 1 HP now fell and took damage, rendering her unconscious and she started dying so they were all rushing to get away to try to revive her.
    Also in the stream series Keyleth had wanted to do something about the orb and ended up touching it. If she hadn't rolled a nat20 to try to pull away, she would have been pulled into it but as it was she took a ton of damage instead.
    So it was interesting to see how they chose to depict these intense moments in the animated series.

    If, by any chance, you are into checking out the original campaigns, here is a more or less "completionist" set of videos to binge in your spare time (when you are not busy with your other responsibilities) - you might need to bookmark those or copy somewhere into your notes:
    ruclips.net/video/DYBM3myR914/видео.html
    "Exandria: An Intimate History" is a short 10-minute video that serves as the definitive chronological reference for the in-game universe of Critical Role campaigns and the works of fiction associated with it. It also provides a glimpse of the Exandrian cosmology, theology, history, geography and political structure of the world in which the characters go on their adventures.
    ruclips.net/p/PLQRE5geahRYYCgnbidlk-XVIPaob7P2-x
    Campaign 1 (Vox Machina), with the obligatory inclusion of chronologically relevant one-shot game sessions featuring familiar characters, discussion panels from various conventions etc. (the Briarwoods arc starts at ep. 24, if you want to revisit that specific section).
    Be advised on the following issues:
    - the first episodes of the show have blurred character intros (fair use technicalities). In the first episodes they didn't have their own official illustrator, so used reference pictures off the internet. Unfortunately, the Geek & Sundry overlay covered the names of the artists, and it appeared as if CR didn't give them credit where credit was due, so those artists threatened to sue CR for copyright infringement. While the issue resolved itself later, with both the onboarding of Kit Buss and tons of fan art pouring in, in these earlier episodes the intro artwork is blurred out. A version of character intros with visuals is available at: ruclips.net/video/_b1oZmPrpDg/видео.html
    - audio issues in the first 4 episodes. Viewers are strongly advised against using headphones to prevent eardrum damage. Closed captions provided with the video can help alleviate the problem.
    - one member of the original cast left the show after ep. 26 of the campaign and is no longer involved in anything related to Critical Role. For this reason, his character never appears in the animated series (as it's his, not CR's, intellectual property). While most of the drama regarding said player happened behind the scenes, it still hurt the community. The details about the incident are googleable, however, proceed with caution.
    ruclips.net/p/PLX5UqtXlg76n7cwlGrJsQNAI9oU_6g7ej
    Campaign 2 (The Mighty Nein) - same world, about 20 years later, new adventuring party.
    ruclips.net/p/PL1tiwbzkOjQzSnYHVT8X4pyMIbSX3i4gz
    Exandria Unlimited - a "filler" mini-campaign between C2 and C3, featuring Aabria Iyengar as the DM and Matt Mercer as one of the players.
    ruclips.net/p/PL1tiwbzkOjQydg3QOkBLG9OYqWJ0dwlxF
    Campaign 3 - current; ongoing; updated weekly; includes lots of spoilers for and cross-references with C1.

    I know everyone will be recommending jumping into the Critical Role live show, but you should definitely check out Dimension 20 too!

    Syntell, your videos are well worth watching for your witty one-liners and deep observations, but having you and Mikel-Claire there together is more fun. The back-and-forth between you two is a show in itself. Having said that, I have to agree with you on the entertainment value of The Legend of Vox Machina for the D&D community as a former player myself. I also think the show goes beyond the appeal for that audience. It's well-performed. The writing is excellent. The story starts with well-formed characters and relationships and just goes up from there. The fight scenes have great moments for each character. The humor is outrageous. The finale episode brings it all home by going beyond the theme of revenge. It could have ended with Percy's revenge being satisfied, but they go deeper by showing the price of revenge on Percy's soul. That doesn't always happen in a story, and here it makes the characters more complex and satisfying.

    So this moment was *huge* in the game. During the episode where they had returned to Emon and things had finally settled down after all the excitement of liberating Whitestone, Vax was talking with the rest of the group and was asking "where do we go from here?" As far as they were concerned, it couldn't get bigger than saving an entire city from a necromancer and a Vampire Lord who had been terrorizing it for years. Vax was considering the group might want to retire soon since they couldn't get much bigger than where they were. The whole time Matt as the DM was giving this "just wait a little longer" look. Towards the end of the episode the Sovereign was giving his speech when the four Ancient dragons showed up and began smashing everything in sight. While it was definitely a planned attack on Matt's part, it definitely felt like a "oh, you want a bigger adventure, I've got a bigger adventure for you!" response.

    I had to smile at the comparison of Sylas' sword to the Dark Blade from The Mandalorian.
    I'm hoping that the series goes for at least a few seasons, so y'all can find out about that sword -- because it's not what you think, and it's more dangerous than the Dark Blade will ever be.
    With Percy, it's always been about what's in his own head. And just saying, the role-playing when Scanlan got a hold of Percy's gun, during the campaign, was actually pretty hilarious -- and Taliesin Jaffe's reaction, the player who created Percy, was priceless. It wasn't until Scanlan threw the gun into the acid pit that Percy realized what had tethered the demon, Orthax, to him. Which, if the series continues to the end of the next arc, will become important (the bond of the demon to Percy).

      Interesting you mention about vengeance and hate feeling good, but it being detrimental in the long-term.
      During the campaign wrap-up, Taliesin Jaffe literally said that had Percy not overcame the demon and instead started murdering the names on the barrels, that would not have ended. Literally, it would have become another 5 names. Then another 5 names. Then 5 more names. Demonstrating, I think, a significant moral: That the only way a cycle of violence like vengeance ends, is if we end it. We are never compelled to keep perpetrating that cycle, as we always, through the power of what we choose, have the ability to say "no", and end the cycle for good.

So trying to convey Percy's gradual mental shift in the way they have in the contrast between Him and Cassandra at the end was pretty smart. The Campaign will always be better, ala the eternal Book VS Movie debate, but the Animated show is Pretty Great. So Far their only major sin is not enough Gilmore, which I'm sure will be rectified later.

But there was that shot on Percy as she walked away, like maybe he wanted to say something. But I guess we'll see later how far that ~forgivenss~ actually goes (it doesn't go anywhere, because there was no forgiveness. She was shot twice, maybe Percy just wanted to see her bleed out slowly 😅)

      @@hhylobates4098 I mean even in the campaign I feel like not everything was resolved instantly between Percy and Cass just because the Briarwoods were gone, how could it be?
      I don't know if I'd really call it forgiveness, more like realizing that the path of vengeance was all consuming and would inevitably lead to him hurting those around him so he decided to let go, but again, I can see why that's a difficult concept to put into animation and why they maybe simplified it slightly lol. And without the demon's influence he could see through her vitriol and empathize with her losing her husband.
      Lady Briarwood had to die, I don't think anyone had a problem with that, It just couldn't be Percy because we don't want to empower Orthax further and cost Percy his soul.
      The Dynamic between Percy and Cassandra always interested me and I always wished they spent more time together in the campaign because she was such an interesting character. The mixture of Love and resentment and guilt is such a fascinating combination. Especially as Percy SPOILERS FOR LATER IN CAMPAIGN 1
      kept abandoning her to deal with the dragon problem, leaving her to clean up mess after mess and keep everything afloat. He gets to leave and have adventures while she's stuck being the responsible one. She's still practically a child, or just barely an adult, maybe 18- 19, After being raised by monsters since she was 12-13, and she's being roped into leading a City recovering from a dictatorship and about to be thrust into another crisis almost immediately. Honestly I'd love a novel written from her perspective.

When she has suffered 5 more years under them, and seen firsthand for 5 years the deterioration of /their/ people....I don't known I just think anyone in that town would be telling him to get the hell out of Whitestone and never return and not "Glad you let go of your issues" if they thought forgiveness was anywhere near what went on here.

    You could stretch out your Critical Role content by checking out and reacting to some of the comparison video's that are out and about on RUclips. Clips of live stream moments being compared with their animated retellings. Or the different opening credits for the live stream, in the primary one for Campaign 1 the players are engaged in battle dressed up as their Vox Machina counterparts. The early Campaign 2 opening where they dress up as 70's geek tropes playing D &D is cute, but the animated opening from their time as The Mighty Nein, set to the song 'Your turn to Role' is iconic. Written by Sam(Scanlan), main vocals from Ashley(Pike) and Laura(Vex) with back up from Travis(Grog). The newest one for Campaign 3, has the cast in it, but in a more general adventure/gameplay style so not spoilery. The song 'It's Thursday Night' is also written by Sam and performed by the cast... including Matt(GM and Lord Sylas Briarwood) and is just a great song.
    I would also recommend the series of video's Critical role put out during production of the Animation, 'The Legend of The Legend of'... lots of behind-the-scenes info, in the vein of some special features on blue rays and such. Six video's going over the various parts of making the show, writing, art, music, casting... just some surprisingly fun talks with the people behind all of that. SPOILER WARNING: Percy invents a spaceship to travel to the moon. Keyleth actually is able to create a small bubble of atmosphere and start growing life, which ties into another campaign. Vex has to land on an asteroid to avoid the ship crashing and gets left, her fate is uncertain. Vax has to kill a space tiger, he coins the term "You've been Vaxxinated". Scanlan uses his hand to give the dragons a prostate exam, and as the ship comes back into orbit it crashes into one. Grog and Pike both smash into the other two. The last dragon, seeing his allies fall, loses heart, and Scanlan uses Vicious Mockery on him and shames him to death. Thus ends the Legend of Vox Machina.
