    I was in a toxic workplace and was anxious to the point where I can't sleep for days. My friend took me fishing around this game to just chill for a while. Just carried me around on their mounts to fish in different locations. I like how everyone in game just minded their own business while I enjoyed the sounds of the rain and can just breath for a while. I absolutely expected to get griefed but nope. People even quietly joined in and we had a little fishing party in south shroud. Surrounded by glowing crystals, flowing water, fishing buddies and the rain. I know what you mean by being able to fall asleep to this game.
    In game I'm a cat with war wounds from 1.0 who needs lots of downtime between saving the realm. Her goddess is Halone, which comes out in her fighting spirit when duty calls 💪. But mostly she just enjoys the beautiful world which somehow manage to pull through the destruction 1.0. It's really the little things that makes life living for.
    I know you probably have people guiding you, but don't forget to do Coils :D

      I have a somewhat similar story. I've never played any online game before (well, there was Starcraft when I was, like, 10). I was not - and I'm still not - in a great place, but I made two friends just by saying hi to them a couple years ago. Recently I joined a free company and have enjoyed talking lore and exploring the world with one of my FC mates. Those two friends got married in-game and I got to be around as they dragged me along some quests they were doing, dragged me to the wedding and to the afterparty, and... I've enjoyed myself. For the first time, I haven't felt like I need to be on guard in my interactions with others. I've slowly - too slowly, I admit - been trying to change my life, but being around these people has helped me see the possibility of something better.

      In this universe, I am a Miquote, a gutter cat, never ataying at 1 place for long. His god is Oschon, the wanderer (i ised to be homeless, i am good now, but that aspect of my life never really left me. There are some part of it i have romanticized.). I started out as a Fishermen. This Cat love fishing and cooking. He hates rain. Never go out if it rains. (I am actually a lvl 86 cook and a lvl 80 fisher). As said he started as a Rogue in Limsa Lominsa, he got caught stealing some fish and had to run away. In his travel, he became met different people and learned the secret of Ninjutsu. Junjie Oshidari is his name.
      He had a lot of story. But for now he found a group of like minded people and has a FC home. If you ever see him, be sure to say hi! He might give you weird stuff to eat. But it comes from the heart. (I always have something i cooked on me that i give to strangers. Lol)

      I also had a toxic work experience that wrecked my life 😭 I was bullied into quitting that job, and then spent my next few months of unemployment playing this game. The theme of overcoming suffering to become stronger was really comforting and meaningful during that time. I hope you are in a better job now!

    The fact that you're taking your time to learn the lore and story, getting into character, and reading the dialogue means you're going to have a very rewarding experience! FFXIV is the only game I know of that every little thing feels like a living world with a meaningful payoff, but nothing feels like it existed for the payoff, so it hits and feels a little more real.
    There aren't a lot of people I know who like Conan and FFXIV. Can't tell you how happy it made me to see this vid.

    You might want to look into Red Mage if you want to do a spellblade. They are jack of all trades who use both black and white magic and fight with rapiers

    • @8BitCerberus
      @8BitCerberus 4 месяца назад +4

      MNK turn SAM definitely makes sense thematically, but yeah RDM is the actual spellblade job in XIV. It’s one of the things I most love about the game, just being able to play every job on one character. You’re never locked into one path. That even gets canonically added to your characters journey as people start to acknowledge your mastery of other jobs, regardless which one you’re currently using.

      @8BitCerberus I'd say RDM may work better than SAM for a monk.
      Both MNK and RDM have a strong connection to Ala Mhigo and use aether of their own bodies to achieve their results.
      SAM on the other hand, proceed from the far east, and act as police.

    “Samurai are the closest thing the game has to a spellblade”
    *looks over at Red Mage, Paladin, Dark Knight, Gunbreaker, and Reaper*
    Sure, let’s go with that.

    • @maxspecs
      @maxspecs 4 месяца назад +3

      Melee caster, I get it.

    • @RED_XLR
      @RED_XLR 4 месяца назад +5

      I would assume he means spellblade in a more literal sense too. Because, yeah, Red Mage would fit the bill, but it has Mage in its name and uses a magic orb of sorts, not just a blade with spells. Palading has a sword and shield and light magic, but it also has a shield, is tank-focused, and doesn't feel like a spellblade but like a Paladin with light magic. Dark Knight uses dark magic, and I would consider this the other closest thing to spellblade, but it's a greatsword, dark edgy magic, and he's a tank. Gunbreaker is the other that might fit the bill since it has only a blade and explosion magic, but the blade is actually a gun too, so who knows what parts of his "spells" are magic or technology? And Reaper uses a farming tool with barely a blade, and again, dark ancient magic-yeah, it's cool, but I wouldn't count it either.
      So the closest one is still Dark Knight and Samurai, even though Samurai doesn't technically use magic of any sort except maybe the barrier it has; it is a DPS, uses a single blade and nothing else, and has cast times that feel like what a mage or spellcaster would feel like but with a sword. So I'd argue that spellblade fits the Samurai the most, more or less because of his role and the way he fights and feels.

    • @JackWolf1
      @JackWolf1 4 месяца назад +1

      @@RED_XLR your points are valid, but I’d like to offer a counter-argument, if I may:
      The way samurai fights is very much built on a foundation of discipline and technique, very much like a monk in many ways, and while it is able to unleash various techniques that contain aether, that fact holds true for pretty much every martial discipline of XIV.
      Dragoons channel Aether into their jumps and dives, Ninjas incorporate it into their ninjutsu, Bards weave it into their bolstering songs, Machinists channel it into their contraptions via the Atheroconverter, Dancers invoke it with their dance, and Warriors mix it with their raw emotions.
      By the definition laid out, every class in the game, is a ‘spellblade’, or at least an arcane-warrior.
      By the more traditional definition, which is a caster that is proficient with martial weapons, the foremost class that would fit here is Red Mage, because they are the only casting class with a melee component to their rotation.
      Either way, Samurai very much doesn’t feel like a “martial artist they uses magic” any more or less than any other class, and spectacularly fails the definition of “a mage that uses martial weapons”.

    • @evrfreez
      @evrfreez 4 месяца назад

      I guess it really depends on what he means by "spellblade". If we're talking "lightly-armoured sword-wielding fighter who enhances his combative ability with magic", then only Samurai qualifies (by dint of aether powering their attacks, like all classes, and the others being either too heavily-armoured, using the wrong weapon, or being a mage who sometimes hits in melee rather than a meleeist who benefits from magic). That's putting words in his mouth, of course, but it is what most people think of for 'spellblade', aesthetically speaking. Plus the long-cast three-sticker strike has real melee mage vibes.
      That being said.. I hope he tries Dark Knight, the channel's theme alone demands it, never mind the amazing story =D

    • @8BitCerberus
      @8BitCerberus 4 месяца назад +3

      @@RED_XLR the “orb of sorts” is the foci and when casting a spell the RDM combines the foci with the rapier to complete their magic wand/staff. The also use both dark and light or white and black magic, rather than only focusing on light/white or dark/black magic. Beyond that they channel their magic into their blade to enhance their melee sword strikes with their magic enfused sword. It doesn’t get much more “spellblade” than that.

  • @evrfreez

    Welcome! Welcome. I almost got a tear to my eye when you said, early in the video, that you were enjoying the game and hadn't even gotten to level 30 yet. It's such an oft-repeated mantra that fans of the game tell new players "it gets good at Heavensward" that many forget that the base game is a lovely time too, and I'm so happy you're getting to enjoy it at your pace. The Pugilist questline is great. Since you love lore (as I do) I'm gonna echo the pinned comment and advocate for doing The Binding Coils of Bahamut once you get there (it's in the Free Trial). Also, if people haven't already started shouting about it.. Dark Knight is a great class for the storyline, and, I mean, given your channel theme.. anyway, I hope you keep having a great time in Eorzea (which I think you did pronounce right the first time, in this vid).

    Glad to see you recovering. You're making Crom proud!
    As a certified walking Encyclopedia Eorzea, if you want to get a little more specific with your character's origins while still adhering to the lore, one good place of origin could be the Farreach.
    This is a volcanic land at the very northern edge of Eorzea, nestled between the mountains of Abalathia's Spine and the shores of the Nothern Empty (beyond which, far, far to the north, lies the ancient homeland of the Roegadyn, Aerslaent), which is highly isolated from the city-states of the rest of the landmass. Here live the Hellsguard Roegadyn clans (who take their name from the ancient belief that the volcanic caves in the area are gates to the underworld), with one unnamed village in particular being home to Curious Gorge (yes that's his actual name) and the art of the berserking Warrior. While Farreach is specifically noted as being home to the Hellsguard, Hyur are unfathomably widespread, and it would be pretty believable to imagine that Highlander clans live alongside the Roegadyn in simple, "primitive" villages and lifestyles.
    Most other highlanders are the sons and daughters of Ala Mhigo, the easternmost city-state of Eorzea, and once the most belligerent, until it was taken over by the Garlean Empire 25 years before the events of Realm Reborn and many of its people and resistance fighters were pushed into Ul'dah and Gridania as refugees, suffering from great prejudice due to not just... well, being refugees, but because of Ala Mhigo's unsavoury past prior to the Garlean occupation - yet remaining proud and strong in their identity as Ala Mhigans and worshippers of Rhalgr the Destroyer (the central deity of the Monks of the Fists of Rhalgr, patron of their homeland, and member of the Eorzean pantheon of the Twelve).
    Others yet may, presumably, be found in various other regions of the world, so the Farreach and Ala Mhigo are far from your only lore-friendly options, but none others are named as such. And of course, there's always room for creative liberty regardless lol

    Its quite rare to see a content creator approach this game with your mindset from a RP perspective, and while I understand your reservations with the main story questline in the base game A ealm Reborn (it is infamously dubbed the great filter of FF14 due to is very slow pacing) it is amazing how well you have already connected to the world and the characters that inhabit it through your particular choice of character background and Job.
    All I can say is that if you have enjoyed what you have seen so far, know that you have only scratched the surface of the emotional voyage that awaits you. It is a rare reward in gaming that is given only to those who do manage to fully connect with the tale and world the creators of FF14 have spun, and from all indications you appear to be well on your way despite how little of the game you have experienced so far. My advice is treat it as a journey, continue to take your time and enjoy every moment. The rewards you will reap by doing so, will be bountiful.

    I'm so happy you're getting into FF proper and not listening to all the rumours. Every game has weirdos, it's all about how you ignore them and enjoy the game in the best way you can.
    Samurai is memed on as a 'caster' DPS because of the cast bar on many of their skills, but a real blade&sorcery class is Red Mage.
    Both samurai and Red Mage have cool class stories you might like.
    As a final note, if you enjoy Ff14's story and reach a point where you'd like a more darker story, FF16 is my recommendation.

    I am glad to hear you're having a good time! If you enjoy lore and world building I think you will only enjoy the game more as it goes on. The team in this game really do pay attention and care to making sure nothing is half assed, even the smallest things like materials you gather with gathering jobs having lore descriptions, as well as minions, triple triad cards, mounts, etc. All of it is filled with care and detail. Small lore tidbits that I will leave as a spoiler under read more in case you don't want to read them:
    It's good that you picked monk because the job quests will almost singlehandedly focus ON highlander AKA Gyr Abanian lore. Highlanders are from a sort of desert-y, rocky area to the north east of Aldenard (the continent that contains all 3 of the city states uldah, gridania and limsa, as well as ishgard). I really hope you enjoy these quests.
    That being said, picking Oschon the wanderer is neat but Rhalgr is usually the go to for Highlanders, Rhalgr is the destroyer, he is associated with Ala Mhigo and monks specifically.

    I also play a Highland Hyur. Kind of viewed him as more of a Scotsman or Celt. Went the Conjurer route as it seemed Druidic, and Picked Nymeia the Spinner. A little irritated that after a certain time of being a White Mage, all the naturey aspects of the Conjurer are kind of whited out, so to speak. You can't even just play the Conjurer either, because half their spell advancements are tied to White Mage.

    a "fun" fact, yoshida the director of FF14 is regularly complaining about having the keep down because of the family friendly rating (in my opinion already debatable) of the game, and he said that the game would be a LOT darker, gritty-er and above all much more gory than it is now. and there are a lot of little moments that let this shine through, also it is absolutely amazing that the main protagonist hasn't just offed him/herself after everything that happens in the main story so far.

      there's a LOT of not for kids content just under the surface in ARR alone... just going to point out the first three dungeons and their lore (and that's not counting Edda and her party)

    I really like that you're giving yourself time to enjoy the lore and setting the game has to offer. I'm sure you will have a very entertaining journey ahead as you go through the expansions.
    EU player here. In the game, I'm playing an Au Ra that was under the thumb of the Garleans, escaped and is now siding with the Eorzeans.
    After all the expansions, he's finally sorted himself out though he found himself as an outsider a lot of times. I love to give him modern Garlean-ish looks but also enjoy giving him more savage glamours more in line with his real race: a hot-blooded Xaela.
    Also, happy to hear you enjoy when games can go to dark places. I think FFXIV has a good balance in terms of serious and dark and fun and whimsy. Especially if you take your time to do all the small quests in the maps, it will enrich your experience greatly as you will be involved and learn the day to day life of NPCs, what people do to survive in certain areas or even more interesting lore and situations.

    I've followed you and watched your conan content for a bit now and you have no idea how happy it makes me to see you dabble into FFXIV as well! The lore of that game can be surprisingly good, it is absolutely amazing roleplaying setting, right up there as my favorite along Conan.
    One time in roleplay we had to encounter a tempered child. It was a big moral dilemma at the time. In-RP it didn't end well, but damn it was some of the most interesting RP we had done by then!

    If you enjoy the lore and worldbuilding that you've been getting with Pugilist's story, I have a few recommendations that you may like in terms of class quests if you want to take a break from main story at any point.
    - Samurai (50-60 especially) It functions similarly to traditional samurai films, which is a delightful experience.
    - Rogue/Ninja (Start to Finish) Starts out with a major insight into how one of the city states functions, ends up with espionage and japanese B movie tropes.
    - Dragoon (30-50) Some notable lore insight, but not much more to add.
    - Black Mage (50-60 especially) This grants a deep level of understanding about the magic system of the setting, it's not 'wiggle your fingers, magic happens'.
    - Arcanist (1-30 especially) My personal recommendation for people who are coming into FFXIV and wanting to understand if it can tackle serious real world issues. It can, it just takes a bit of getting used to and this can acclimatize people.
    - Dark Knight (30-50 especially) Very much a rite of passage for anyone playing this game, I will not elaborate further.
    - And finally, if/when you get there, Reaper. We do not get much insight into the kinds of areas this Job comes from. It is a very interesting experience.

    Welcome to FF. I also REALLY appreciate a content creator going monk. Monk is soooo much fun, especially as you unlock skills and also is super versatile with practice. I hope you enjoy the thrill of hand to hand combat as much as I do!

    If you enjoy the magic systems of worlds, FFXIV has such a variety there too.
    The ways each mage in FF manipulates aether is unique. A good example would be to look at Red Mage and its contrast with white and black magic.
    White and Black magic both used the ambient aether to enhance its effectiveness, which led to large scale environmental destruction long ago. Red mages descend from some of the surviving mages from that time, and manipulate their personal aether instead to mimic the effects of white and black magic without causing as much disturbance to the land.
    Arcanists and their related jobs also use their owm personal aether, but lore-wise basically use math to more efficiently utilize it.
    Only people who have had firsthand experience with primals can become summoners, because it requires them to have had firsthand experience with the aether of a primal.

    I heard the voice and thought it was similar: I found you through your Legend of the Galactic Heroes and Conan comparison video. I'm very glad to find you again! This game is great to the point where sometimes it doesn't feel like a stereotypical MMO, so I'm glad its making you relaxed during a difficult time in your life. I have several friends in FF14 where the brief escapism of the world helped them greatly and I hope it does for you as well.

    My recommendation for you if you want the sorta spellblade fantasy is picking up Red Mage. They wield a rapier that they use as a staff to cast magic and have points of swordsmanship and spellcasting. Lore wise I think your character will enjoy the sort of "Balance" mindset they have as well.

    RUclips glitched and I lost my big comment...
    Im glad youre having fun. I dont play fully in character but my decisions and thoughts while playing are always as "these are my friends and theyre good people, I want to help" instead kf just "mash X to end cutscene". I feel like the game has a lot more to offer to people who really wanna chew on the world's lore.
    Ah I will say that as some parts of the start is tedious, everything set as a basic principle of magic, aether, and so on will always be kept as a hard rule and actually kept consistently... for the most part.
    As the way I play, my hrothgar is a big friendly giant usually seen with a smile and some light glasses resting in front of his gold and sapphire eyes. The many mysteries of the world have led him to investigate the paths of magic and war and fine tune his combat prowess for almost any occasion (ninja, monk, black mage, and scholar are competent but im not the best).
    In his free time he likes stretching his muscles with a dungeon run or helping the various tribes across the world. Needlework is finicky for his big hands though.
    I hope you continue to have a good time in Eaorzea, the names and spellings will always be a mess

    It's quite neat you created a backstory for your character that isn't directly connected to the existing nations. We don't see a lot of that in the game, though for example tribes of people existing in the mountain regions of Gyr Abania are mentioned in passing.
