    It's really actually sad how much college basketball has fallen off. There was really a time where it was as big if not bigger than the NBA. These guys like Sampson and Ewing had brands and big names BEFORE they came into the NBA. Now we just wanna fast track and rush these kids to the money smh

    I was 12 when this game was played. I remember watching with my grandfather, uncles, stepdad, and others in our basement. It was sick that night watching. This was the season before Georgetown won it all, and UVA went to the Final Four with Olden Polynice at center, replacing Sampson who graduated to the NBA.

  • @tenfourproductionsllc
    @tenfourproductionsllc 3 года назад +3

    Sampson was a freak for 7'4 and the abilities he had, probably could have played forward even if he were 6'7. He could jump, run, and dribble. But wasn't physically strong and then of course with all super tall giants, the knees gave out on him. I think he would do well in today's NBA but back then, it was brutal under the basket.

    IIRC this was the last "big game" that was carried on a syndicated basis. TBS had the rights to the game but left the signal open to any local tv stations that wanted to pick it up (for a fee, of course😊). With the rise in popularity of college basketball and the expanding availability of cable tv (the two went hand-in-hand) all the big national games from this point on were covered by the broadcast networks or Cable sports networks like ESPN.

    @ Guy Tar7..... Yea because panzies def win NPOTY 3x in their college career LMAO. if this was just a couple years later when Sampson came through than UVA would have made 2019 there 2nd Natty win if not their 3rd. If the shot clock was around in those days, teams never would have been able to limit Sampson's touches by running the 4 corners offense that Dean Smith had to use to even compete with Sampson. Even when he had the GOAT in MJ, Everyone feared Sampson in college basketball. Literally no team wanted that problem. 7'4 machine with a smooth hook shot that nobody could get a hand on. Man this was the best time in college basketball. When Defense was played and stars stayed in school multiple years because they wanted to WIN for THEIR SCHOOL. THEIR TEAM. Not like today in the NBA where stars are all about making the best all star team for one franchise. Stupid, watching the best stars compete against one another and really leave it all on the floor for a chance to be called a champion. A true Champion, knowing you beat the best there is to earn that RING.
