  • Imagine having a chance to go for an NFL record and cement yourself in league history forever, and deciding not to do it. Well, that's exactly what happened with Washington Redskins quarterback Mark Rypien in week 11 of the 1991 NFL season when, during a game against the Atlanta Falcons, he declined the opportunity to set the all-time franchise record for most passing yards in a game. And the reason why deserves a deep dive more than three decades later

Never rub it in a team’s face. You never know when you might meet them again. By the way, that ‘91 Skins team still doesn’t get enough credit as one of the greatest single season squads in league history.

I’ve said for a while now that if Mark Rypien’s name was Steve Young or Joe Montana (same exact numbers and all, just a different name to a QB more recognizable by the average fan), that they’d be remembered as the greatest team ever

I believe CCC Productions was one of the few RUclipsrs in recent years to address just how monstrously dominant the 91 Redskins are, as I believe they were the second greatest team in the Super Bowls, and only the second team in NFL history to secure a C-Score higher than 50. Number 1 on both counts? The 85 Bears. Yes, according to CCC Productions, the 91 Redskins were a better team than the likes of the 07 Patriots, 72 Dolphins, 89 49ers and 70's Steelers. And the only 90's team that was even remotely close to the talent level of the 91 Redskins were the 96 Packers.

I covered a high school championship game years ago. The star Junior running back of the team that was winning in a blowout was informed on the sidelines that he was a few yards shy of the team's single season rushing record, and the coach would put him back in to get the record if he wanted. With such a big lead, the player declined and said, "not getting the record this year will give me motivation for next year." However, the following year he was injured in training camp and missed nearly the entire season. I wonder if he regretted not going back into the game the previous season.

I was at the rematch of this game, often called "The Seat Cushion Game". Seat cushions were handed out to everyone upon entry to the stadium. Near the end of the game, fans started frisbee-throwing them on to the field in celebration, causing a delay. I almost threw mine, but my dad stopped me, saying - "No, don't do it! It will be a collectors item one day!" I was 9 years old. I still have it hanging on my wall. Thanks dad.

When you look at what that 1991 Redskins team did that year, and the fact that they actually finished the job by winning the Superbowl, they're in my opinion the best overall team the NFL has ever seen. They scored 30 pts per game (1st on offense), only allowed 14 pts per game (2nd on defense). They only let five opponents score more than 21 points, and their two losses on the season were by a combined five points. And the 2nd loss was in the season finale where the starters didn't even finish the game. Their O-line only gave up nine sacks all season, and it was all regular season. They didn't allow a single sack in the post-season. Also, the 1991 Redskins while having the 3rd fewest pass attempts all season, still finished with a passing attack that ranked 4th overall in yards. That team was hitting constant home runs with deep balls because that O-line gave Mark Rypien all day to throw.

@markphelt6395 Victims of their own humility: I've always maintained that one of the biggest reasons the '91 Redskins are so disgracefully overlooked is that none of the players have made it their life's work to tell anyone within earshot how great they were.

He was the last in a long line of great Redskins quarterbacks stretching back to Sammy Baugh and going through names like Sonny Jurgenson, Billy Kilmer, Joe Theismann and Doug Williams. He was smart, tough, and could throw the deep ball better than anyone I'd ever seen, though Redskins fans never seemed to really give him his due.
Regardless, his departure marked the end of the team's glory days. Since Rypien left, the Redskins have never had success-or a truly great quarterback-remaining mired in mediocrity despite constantly having the biggest payroll and free agent signings in the league. Though in fairness, being under the control of the absolute worst team owner in the NFL for twenty years probably had something to do with that. And I will never accept the name change, either. Can only hope it gets reversed someday.
Oh, and one caveat on the game against Atlanta in the Divisional round you mentioned: the weather was awful. Heavy rain and high winds with 50-degree temperatures turned the RFK turf to muck and mostly grounded the passing games. He did enough for a 24-7 win, and then he blew out the Detroit Lions 41-10 the following week in the NFC championship game under far better conditions, tossing two long touchdowns.
Some people call him a one-year wonder, but the truth is that he had the best starter record in the league short of a guy named Joe Montana over a four-year stretch, and won playoff games in three consecutive seasons, including two on the road. That's nothing to sneeze at. He was a damn good quarterback and I still wonder what would have happened if he hadn't gotten badly hurt on a scramble early in 1993.
