    You mentioned the browns missing the chance to draft Big Ben in 2004 but you left out the best part. Ever since the rookie wage scale these teams are quick to dump a developing quarterback. You can take a QB in round one every year if you want. Yeah a lot of guys will get stepped over but it is a way better situation than being stuck with a subpar QB because of the salary cap. Perfect examples are 2004 Roethlisberger and 2005 Rodgers. Oakland wanted Rodgers but was stuck with Kerry Collins and his contract. Not to pick on Collins, I was always a fan. Even at Penn State.

  • @michaelhession2105
    @michaelhession2105 6 месяцев назад +42

    The Browns did have a franchise QB, and they completely ruined his confidence, rushed him back from injury, gave him four head coaches in four seasons, and then dumped him for Deshaun Watson. Baker Mayfield was the best QB that the Browns have had since Bernie Kosar, and they know it. Look at what he did in Tampa Bay last year, he went to a franchise that just saw Tom Brady retire, and he took that team to the playoffs and was within one drive of getting to the NFC Championship Game. If they kept Baker and then drafted Chris Olave and Will Anderson the next year, and found depth on offense and defense without giving up major draft capital they would be legitimate Super Bowl Contenders. Haslam better thank the gods for Andrew Berry or else he'd be getting mocked at even more than he is.

It was he who fired Budenholzer, then fired his replacement midseason for Doc Rivers, and then traded the entire future, plus Jrue Holiday and Grayson Allen for Damian Lillard, and then gave Dame the same contract he gave Deshaun Watson. On one end, he was the perfect jolt for that franchise and could have had more playoff chances with that team. But on the other end, his immaturity and playing through that devastating injury that he had to his non-throwing shoulder really cost him his job there. Where it’s his non-throwing shoulder, ok, give Baker 2-3 games to see if he can still go. After a few weeks though, it’s obvious he’s not the same player and the team needs to step in and say “Thanks Bake, but you’re not the same player with only one arm. You’re done, go get surgery.”

    It's crazy just how bad the Browns have been as an institution at picking QBs. It genuinely is hard to get a top QB, but it feels like they have actively tried to avoid doing so. When you look at Chicago, another cursed franchise, at least they look like they are TRYING at QB. A big trade to get Cutler, trading up to draft Tribiski, trading up to get Fields. And none of these were huge successes but these are guys who at least start for a few years. When the Browns are in the same situation, they take Manziel and Hoyer, outrageous choices that were clearly doomed to fail. Even going after Watson; where they give up too much and overpay him; it's just... No, Browns. No. That's not a good idea.
    I genuinely think the only sensible move they have made in decades is when they drafted Colt McCoy in the third round, and he was unexciting but somewhat competent. McCoy is stayed in the league until last year, by the way. He played meaningful snaps in Arizona. How many other Browns QBs were even still backups?

      @@ROMBomb001baker was very polarizing some people loved him and others hated him both for good reason.
      The problem with baker is that although he is an average to slightly below average QB (if you just average his years together) he has these peaks and valleys
      2019, 2021,2022 he was objectively a bottom 5 QB in the sport
      2020 and 2023 he was 10-12. 2018 he was about 12-15.

    It is wild the two times the new Browns made the playoffs, barely squeaking in, they were both against their division rival. Pittsburgh. They lost one and won one. And while most NFL fans are not Browns fans, every NFL fan would love to see them get to a Super Bowl. Technically the Browns have two rings. The old Browns? The team over in Baltimore? They are the old Browns.
    When they announced in late 1995 that a new Browns would begin play in 1999, it seemed like a long way off. And as an expansion team and not a relocated team like many thought would happen, we all knew it’d take a while to become anything. And they did improve every year and got to the playoffs in 2002. Their fourth season. Nobody thought they would be so awful for so long. They really were on their way to building something until 2021, then of course they blew it all up. And of course Baker Mayfield is thriving in Tampa Bay. While they are dealing with the baggage Watson brought to town. Joe Flacco is great but he is a bridge quarterback. They are just always such a mess. It’s almost like they’re trying to mess it all up.
