- A mulch ring around a tree promotes healthy growth. But without a distinct border, it can look sloppy over time. Building a concrete or brick tree ring can improve the look of your yard. In this video, I'll show you how to plan and build a brick tree ring.

This can all be done in a weekend guys. All you need is a trigonometry and graphic design degree and you're all set

Being a professional landscaper I never recommended edges like this. The tree will continue to grow and the roots will expand and slowly put pressure on the bricks until they break. All you need is a three inch deep edge which you can re trench every couple of years as the tree continues to grow larger.
Landscaper here too. I’ve never seen one of these that wasn’t broken and lifted after a couple of years.

It looks really nice! I might try something similar myself but in my climate I'm thinking that the winters will damage the concrete base and/or mortar joints. Maybe I'll just end up dry-stacking a couple of brick layers on a sand base.

beautiful circles, nicely installed. hope you can pull back some of the soil/mulch at the tree's base -- to expose the' 'flare' (they look a little deep -- I learned the hard way, that'll kill a tree in less than a decade).

The program was just a tool used to help give him a better idea of the brick shape and dimensions. This can (and is) easily done without expensive software. Great video!

Here's my thoughts though...
If it was me I would make the whole thing at ground level as to mow easily.
As it is now you have to use a trimmer every time and it's a pain when doing cross or diagonal lawn cuts with these above ground tree rings.
Nothing can be more simple you can't complicate....LOL

So how many degrees did you taper the bricks down on each side from 90*.......looks like about 3 degrees? What was your inside diameter?
DO NOT use concrete... it will not last. The roots will crack it in a couple years. Build with bricks, much easier and you can remove

I enjoy DYI projects but it seems to me that maintaining a trench around the tree is much easier. Also, this project is way above my “pay grade”.

Looks nice but you still have to use a trimmer. It does appear to be a circumference that fits the tree now, but what about when it's grown? Is the tree centered or is it just the camera that makes it look off center??
how do you cut the grass around the ring? i would prefer a solution where the tree ring will be on the same level with the ground (Digged in)

My trees are very old and very thick and the yard is small in comparison. I wonder if a tree ring would just throw off the curb appeal.

Five years on, how is the tree going and any sign of the roots disturbing the concrete?
The roots will move with time, crack the concrete and the bricks will then lift and move around.
Apart from that, splendid....
After 3.5 years, there are no cracks...

great job on the masonry. should look great for years - but, not sure about the tree... if the root flare is covered (soil or mulch), the tree WILL die before this time. look for die-back at the top - once that's begun, the tree’s most likely a goner.
nice job and I appreciate the detail but would prefer to make it flush to the ground so you can mow around it and not have to use the weed trimmer around it
Exactly what I was thinking. Someone also mentioned that the roots will eventually push up and breaking the ring apart. I think I'd also prefer to have a solid ring of pavers but that would involve a saw I don't own, a bunch of calculating and alot of time cutting. Simplest would a rubber tree ring mat but I want one 48" dia. and they don't make them that big.
Some places sell no cut block for different diameters.
Get idea. But where do you get bender board? I’ve been to two hardware stores and they are completely lost on what a bender board is...???
I bought the bender board at Home Depot. If you can't find it, it is just 1/4" MDF that is 4" wide. You can buy a sheet of it and rip it down.
I mean, that looks great, but I don't suppose your average DIYer would end up with the same product lol.

Must admit although I appreciate the effort & intention of this video, I agree with a lot of the comments below: the music track was a distraction & I had to lower it, the CAD drawing & mathematical equations were a first and unnecessary, and pouring brick around a growing tree really is not a good idea for the obvious reasons stated by other commentors. Gardening & landscaping are organic & ever changing & you need to leve room to grow & change areas in your garden. I don't wanna have to break down brick if I want to expand or change that area.
Yea dude, ya went to far with the CAD program. A real mason doesn't need all that for a simple tree ring of brick.

Well, if you don't happen to have a cad program, couldn't you just lay a brick down on the ring and use a piece of string to mark the cuts from the outside corners? I tend to agree with a lot of comments on here, that while this looks great now, the tree roots will eventually push it up and crack it all up. But you should get 5 years before that happens at least. The manufactured stone blocks at the home centers are getting better and better. But they tend to be a little small on the diameter when set together.

why don't you adhesive glue the bricks to the concrete ring?
That's a good questions. The true adhesive for blocks and brick is mortar, which is what was used in the video. Anything else is just a user-friendly product meant for a basic DIY'er. That aside, I would have still needed mortar for use in between the bricks, so using an adhesive, like from a tube, would have been an extra product, an extra step. Lastly, the "liquid nails" and similar adhesives that you are probably thinking about are 10 times more expensive for the same use shown in the video.

So how did you know at what angle to cut the bricks?
I drew the brick ring in Autocad (or you can use Sketchup which is free), and then I cut the bricks to that measurement.

Im not convinced that you need to cut all the bricks to a taper angle. The taper could be achieved by the varying thickness of concrete mix.

Relax people. Just measure two circles. The computer stuff is more a precision job requirement for a professional but you and I could easily do this without the computer part.

Why didn’t you just mark the concrete when wet with a scraper to have brick patten? Double job ?
Many reasons, but the main one is that the second that the mortar is laid on top of the concrete, it would cover the lines.
Engineered Woodworking and DIY my point is not to lay anything after you have drawn the lines. Making the concrete taller with deeper lines. Maybe you could paint the concrete to look like bricks.
Instead of cutting blocks, I would just weld a flat bar as per the CAD brick section the press it on the concrete all around the circumference.
They make stamps for concrete could have made it look like brick and yes concrete will kill a tree had concrete patio with a tree in middle of it left 6ft ring around tree 6 years dead besides not everyone has a 800 dollar wet saw to cut brick

I use either a wet tile saw or a masonry blade on my "metal" chop saw.

Please, please, don’t bury the tree root collar (where the tree trunk naturally meets the ground) like this. It causes rot and mis formed roots. It is a VERY common problem, and will cause tree death or even failure (falls over) in future.
Concerte's rad but doesn't it have negative effects on our planet? I want a small brick house one day. Idk.
The electricity you're using to power the device you're using to view and type this has far more negative impacts than just concrete.

How much cash did you spend on that?
about 6 bags of 80lb concrete, and 2 bags of mortar for each ring. That's about $40 each not counting the brings that I had left over from another project.

If you want a healthy tree DON'T build a ring around it. Brick, Stone, Concrete, or Wood. The only ring around the tree should be mulch.
That’s overkill. You built a foundation for a house already. Lol
The issue here is the author, neglected to research and present how this same project could be done without a computer or sophisticated software, inorder to calculate how to cut the bricks properly. Impossibly sophisticated cathedrals were built over 600 hundred years ago, and palaces, temples and other works even much older than that, were fashioned and built with no CAD Program or computer. This video was inspiring, yet just as much, it was a source of discouragement. Show the relatively simply math, that I'm sure can solve this geometry problem.

Really great video but the name of this should be *"How I Built a Brick Tree Ring"* not "How to Build". This is definitely a bit too technical for most people I'd dare to say.
When I bought my last house, the first thing I did was to remove the tree (mulch) rings from the previous owner. My yard now looks bigger and more natural without those hokey looking tree rings. Installing tree rings is like putting a sign in your front yard that says: "My name is Jim. I'm too lazy to trim around my trees so I put in these dumb looking tree rings so I can just cut around them with my mower".

The inside edges are big enough not to bother those trees for about 300 years...
At which point either the trees already died or it can be someone else's problem. 😁
Ha-- you must not live in Louisiana where a Red Oak would break that ring in 30 years or less,,, ps, not many trees live beyond 120 years anyway, e.g., live Oak, 1400 or more.
