Don Rickles was a King of Comedians. Thank God he was around when everyone had a sense of humor and was not afraid to laugh, especially at themselves ❤😂🎉
We used to be able to take a joke back then. He was one of the greats. People used to say if Don insulted you it was an honor. And in reality, he really did love all kinds of people and was said to be so kind.
Don Rickles was the King of Insult Comedy. Off stage, he was very caring and gentle, but on stage - it didn't matter what walk of life you came from. People felt honored to be roasted by "Mr. Warmth". Everybody wanted to be in the front rows. RUclips has a lot of Don Rickles material to watch. Try The Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts from the 70's, and many talk show appearances. There was always love and respect, never any hurt feelings. Rickles had a quick mind, even when very old.
I highly recommend reacting to his performance at the Ronald Regan Inauguration. It showcases my favorite part about him: he rips into everyone all the same no matter president or if you’re in the audience. And at the end he gives the most sincere and heartfelt compliments you’d ever heard. 13/10, RIP Rickles.
One thing to remember is Don was doing this act during the 1950's/60's with actual "made men" from Italy, Sicily, NYC, Vegas, etc. Don was Frank Sinatra's "Little brother."
Don is my favorite comedian. I am 53 and he was old when I was a kid. He was Jewish and his thought was make fun of everyone equally and prove that we CAN get along and laugh at each other without it having a malicious intent. The greatest compliment an audience member could receive was to get roasted by Don Rickles. No one was upset or calling for him to be fired. Back then, people knew it was all just jokes.
Great reaction and thanks for doing it. Don Rickles was an aberration with a beautiful and gentle spirit. Other comedians have tried to pull off his style and they only sound crass and rude. I doubt there will ever be another like him.
Don Rickles was the ULTIMATE Equal Opportunity Offender, fabulous comedian and actor. He was a regular on the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts in the 70s, and talked about everyone, from Ronald Reagan to Sammy Davis Jr, Orson Wells to Wilt Chamberlain. He lived to be 90, lost him a few years back. One you check out Tee, is when Don Rickles gets roasted by Foster Brooks, it is HILARIOUS!
There's two separate roasts of him roasting Ronald Regan. One when Regan was Governor of California and one when he was President. Both are absolute MUST watches. No one roasted a President like Don Rickles.
The "Merchant of Venom* title, is spot on the money. And he'd still be great today, can't cancel this delivery. 👍 All in the delivery, he survived Mob crowds.
Don Rickles came from the days when before a big band would start he would come on to make the people laugh and get them all in a good mood. He was opening for Frank Sinatra way back in the day. They were very good friends. He was comic royalty. He even roasted presidents like Reagan and Obama. They used to say you know when Don Rickles makes jokes about you that you have made it big. He would take on any actor and they loved it. Was a right of passage. Just about every comedian today owes their career to him. Sure if there is a heaven Don is up their roasting god.
You REALLY need to watch some of the Dean Martin roast. They are long and would have to be cut a lot or broken into a couple of videos. But you would love them. You would also be shocked at what the world used to be like.
My parents, who are black, saw Don Rickles in Lake Tahoe on their honeymoon and they had front row seats...I remember hearing as a kid, "That muthaf***** called us Coke and Pepsi cola". True story.
I've seen Rickles roasting movie and music people in the past but never seen him hitting on ordinary people before. A different time and different comedy good that its still around for people to watch.
Don Rickles and Bob Newhart are my favorite comedians of all time. Turns out they were best friends for over half a century. Two more opposite comedians couldn't exist. On one hand you have "The Roast Master's Master. The Beast of Beverly Hills. The Verbal Venom Virtuoso. Mr.Warmth himself", DON RICKLES. And on the other side you have the architect of deadpan. The quiet, quaint, soft spoken, stumbling, studdering savant of Psychiatry" BOB NEWHART!!! I loved the reaction, but as I'm sure others in the comment section have mentioned, this is such a minute glimpse into the brilliance that is Don Rickles. His stuff on the Dean Martin Roasts and The Johnny Carson Show will be studied by future historians for it's brilliance. Definitely encourage you to consume as much Don as you can. For a master class in standup, I can't suggest Bob Newhart strongly enough. His comedy albums, "The Button up Mind of Bob Newhart" and "The Buttoned Down Mind of Bob Newhart." Was the first and second comedy albums to hold the number 1 spot on the billboard charts. And Bob was the first artist to ever have Albums holding the number 1 and number 2 spot simultaneously on the Billboard Charts. Thanks for keeping the greats alive.
Don Rickles was the OG of roasts. Check out his 50 most savage burns and insults. It's a compilation of his shows. He was also on a weekly show called Dean Martin's Man Of The Hour. Those were insanely funny. He held nothing back, that's for sure. After you watch more of Don Rickles' stand-up, then you have to watch Foster Brooks Roasts Don Rickles. It is over the top hilarious. So many people make that same comment that this wouldn't fly today. Thing is, we're all watching it and laughing at it.
Don just died a few years ago. He performed pretty much until the end. He was from another time when people could laugh at themselves without being offended by what people said. While he was called "the merchant of venom," he always finished his performences humbly and respect for all people groups.
Rickles started in clubs in the 1930s. In addition to his stand up comedy, he appeared in countless movies and TV shows, including dramatic roles in "Kelly's Heroes," "Run Silent, Run Deep" and "Casino." He died in 2017 at age 90.
@@NoOne-kr4jc You are correct. The math doesn't work. I thought I saw that when looking at his Wikipedia page. It was actually the early 50's. Thanks for the correction.
Behind the scenes Don was known as an extremely warm and generous person. He was an influence on every comedian of every race and gender. They adored him.
Rickles was 1st on TV in 1965 - The Tonight Show w/Johnny Carson! (the best) He was other talk & game shows, TV sitcom, Vegas! Well known, since my childhood.
not sure if that show you asked about is on YT in its entirety, but theres one from 1996 titled "Don Rickles LIVE: Pine Knob Arena ( Full Show )" (i learned my lesson with YT and links last time lol) even in 96, he still did it the way he always had
Two of Rickles' most memorable movie roles (imo) - Theater manager in Dirty Work (1998, Norm Macdonald) Manny the mob lawyer in the dark comedy Innocent Blood (1992, directed by John Landis)
Since you're on Don rickles, you should react to his best friend - Bob Newhart - the toupee skit, the bomb disposal skit, the driving instructor skit, the tobacco skit, the psychiatrist STOP! skit, etc. Legendary
You have to watch Don on the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts, absolutely crazy funny, at the end of his roast he praises the people he’s roasting, there’s nothing personal in his comedy just pure fun no matter who you are
Here are some must sees from the Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts 1. Don Rickles Roasts Sammy Davis Jr. 2. Don Rickles Roasts Ronald Reagan. 3. Don Rickles Roasts Redd Foxx 4. Don Rickles (Rickles Gets Revenge - Parts 1 & 2). 5. Muhammad Ali Roasts Dean Martin and Don Rickles interrupts (Shows Don could take it as well as he gave it). 6. Nipsey Russell Roasts Don Rickles (Shows Don could take it as well as he gave it).
In spite of being known as an insult comic, you'd be hard-pressed to find anyone who had a bad word to say about Don. At the end of his act he had a little speech explaining that it's all in good fun and it's all jokes and that he held no ill will toward anyone. RIP, Don.
He was Mr Potato Head in Toy Story. You hadn't heard of him but unknowingly heard his voice. (Someone may have beaten me to it and posted this comment)
I bought the diceman cometh when it first came out. My friend and I played that cassette everyday on his boombox for everyone to hear on our drive to high school on the bus. Even the bus driver would laugh and look at us in the rearview mirror and shake his head. He especially liked the dance/hand movements I made for the knuckle shuffle on the piss pump. 🤣🤣🤣
For short clip look up the roasts of Sammy Davis Jnr and Frank Sinatra on the Dean Martin hosted roast show 'Man of the Hour.' Drank Sinatra became a good friend of Don's and let him get away with cracking Mafia jokes, in fact towards the end of Frank's career Don would tour with him to warm the audience up. If you want longer comedy pieces, which were not the stage work, search and check out his apperances on the Johnny Carson show. Starting back in the early 70's. Though I will admit that at 55 I might have an advantage on those cause I remember who the other guests are.
How is it that you guys who are born and live in US have not heard of a legend like Don Rickels and people like me who live halfway across the world have known him for years. He was Mr potato head... And you should watch his interviews with Carson, Letterman, Craig Ferguson and Kimmel. And watch the Dean Martin roast with Don always as the last roaster. This guy is off the charts.
Rickles was one of the all time greats. If you’re looking for a modern no filter comedian who pushes limits, go watch some Jimmy Carr. Especially some of the older pre Netflix stuff.
You should check out some of the old Dean Martin Celebrity Roasts from back in the 70's and early 80's. Don Rickles was on there often and they were hilarious.
With freckles it's important to understand that it was considered an honor to be given an insult by him. Kind of a badge of honor but not because that in any way meant that Don Rickles didn't like you or that you didn't like Don Rickles
You also would enjoy reacting to Bill Burr's good friend and sort of mentor Patrice O'Neal. I would highly recommend "High Quality White Woman" and "The Nasty Show" He died too soon, and Bill still does a comedy benefit for his family every year.
Rickles is AMAZING! He made fun of everyone, including himself. To see him at his best, watch his appearances on The Tonight Show or the Dean Martin Roasts.
This compilation was one of his more mellow ones there are many out there that are far funnier than this. You may not recognize his name but if you saw Toy Story he was Mr Potato head. Don was a regular on the Dean Martin celebrity roasts. He's one of the greats.
My 2 favorite stand-up comedians are DON RICKLES (insult comic) and RODNEY DANGERFIELD (master of one-liners)..Both have been on Johnny Carson (the tonight show) tons of times. Check them both out there!!
Don Rickles was a King of Comedians. Thank God he was around when everyone had a sense of humor and was not afraid to laugh, especially at themselves ❤😂🎉
Don is a comic GOD!!! He messed with everyone
Audiences wanted to be close to the stage. It was an honour to be near the front and be picked apart by Don.
We used to be able to take a joke back then. He was one of the greats. People used to say if Don insulted you it was an honor. And in reality, he really did love all kinds of people and was said to be so kind.
Why is it an honor to let people insult you
I saw him live in Las Vegas. About halfway through the show we wanted him to stop - because our sides hurt so bad we couldn't breathe!
You're a lucky sob (I say respectfully)
youre so luckly lol id hold onto that memory forever

100% Agree
One thing to remember is Don was doing this act during the 1950's/60's with actual "made men" from Italy, Sicily, NYC, Vegas, etc. Don was Frank Sinatra's "Little brother."
I would of loved to have hung out with that crew!
He was actually one of the sweetest in real life too. But man, he was SO fast...even when he was much older. He was buddies with Sinatra too!
He is a Legend. R.I.P. Don.
The undisputed king of insults

Don Rickles, one of the best!
You have to watch Dean Martin's roasts. You have probably seen him in Casino. It was not a comedic role, but he was in it.
There's two separate roasts of him roasting Ronald Regan. One when Regan was Governor of California and one when he was President. Both are absolute MUST watches. No one roasted a President like Don Rickles.

No filter, hardcore, but has so much respect .. made for the people with Gator skin
Andrew Dice Clay is still performing in clubs.
My parents, who are black, saw Don Rickles in Lake Tahoe on their honeymoon and they had front row seats...I remember hearing as a kid, "That muthaf***** called us Coke and Pepsi cola". True story.
😂😂😅😅😅
He is vicious!! I am dead!! ☠️
He was my favorite on Johnny Carson!
Him and Carson were great together. Johnny just letting Don go and be Rickles 😂
NOTHING was safe with Don Rickles. If you could breathe you were a target.
You need to catch him on Letterman with Denzel Washington
He’s the original roast master
As the old joke goes - "Prejudiced? Whatta ya talkin' about. I hate EVERYBODY! And their mothers too."
Sadly think you’re right about his brand of comedy being no longer considered acceptable ⚛️❤
Red Fox started in stand up too. He was considered offensive for the time and was funny as hell.
He would be considered offensive for these times too. 😂🤣

The King Of Zing! He's the only that makes me LoL Loudly!
What would have been wild to see would been Don and Robin roasting each other. That would have been brutal if you could keep up.
The voice of Mr. Potatoe head in "Toy Story" Got to meet him about 10 years ago... super nice... very gracious...
We need Don more than ever in today’s world! Just laugh and enjoy people.
We had jank wars on the school bus back in the day. It's a competition that gets brutal and feelings get hurt. It was a good time.
Don was a great actor too.
