What Katie is concerned about is making health insurance companies go AWAY and have single payer for everyone in the country. So no. This whole line of questioning was attacking insurance companies by attacking PBMs. Sure, some PBMs accomplish nothing in negotiating a lower price for the consumer. But some do. Katie Porter just believes that only the federal government should have any right to negotiate price and only the federal government has the power to do this. That is why no republican has signed on to even one of her bills. They are on to her.

Some years my pharmacist has saved me a substantial amount of money, but clearly he is unusual. None of my friends have had the same experience at their pharmacies. Each of them pays a different amount for the same medications, depending on what insurance they have.

Anyone can price shop if they have cash. Get your doctor to write the prescription. Then get cash. Then start calling pharmacies and tell them you have a script, what is the best "cash price" for the drugs? Every consumer in the country has the power to do this but this is NOT Katie Porter's concern. Katie doesn't think anyone should have to pay anything out of their own pocket for prescriptions! Only the government should pay. That was the whole point of the narrative of her questions.

In NZ most patients pay $5.00 for each item the doctor writes. This is social medicine, so you don’t need health insurance although some people do have it. Your taxes pay for free healthcare at hospital and the doctor charges in the range of $45.00 to $75.00 per visit, usually 15 minutes. Senior citizens do not pay the prescription charge, and those with regular needs only pay the $5.00 for the first twenty prescriptions.
This is why in the US, the cost of healthcare is so high, and everyone needs insurance.
This same social healthcare system operates in Australia and UK, and probably several other countries.
