The problem is that this is a cross examination of the witness. It's great to have facts, but they need to lead to some sort of relevant question that pertains to the witness's expertise. Miss Porter was just grandstanding and talking AT the witness without asking questions. So no one knows if her "facts" are accurate or if they are even relevant to the witness's expertise. So it's a waste of everyone's time.
Imagine if a pro-gun senator just listed facts about how many robberies or attacks were stopped by gun owners. It may be factual, but it's not relevant to the witness they are talking to. It would just be grandstanding for the least intelligent of observers. This is not how progress is made.

There are no 'no injury' guns, there are no 'wont kill' guns. A guns sole dunction is to kill. Yes, you CAN shoot targets but its still putting a round into something. Hey, let's go all the way! Not only harden the schools (whatever the hell "harden means"), let's harden the movie theatres, the malls, the offices and open areas where mass shootings have and could happen. Arm the teachers and staff? Sure! By the way, when the teacher is assaulted by a student, something that's happening at an alarming rate, is the teacher justified in shooting to kill in defense? And, in those states where unlicensed open carry is the law, can the armed student respond with gunfire? Just asking. I'm all for cracking down on criminals - we could make it harder for them to get their hands on a gun, for instance. And I agree that mental health issues are a problem, but we have to define what a mental health problem might be. As an example, I think that a single-minded focus on fire power and a dedication to having a killing device always at the ready might be an indicator of poor mental health. What do you think? And here's a sticky issue - In virtually every case of mass shootings, the perpetrator, up to the moment when he pulled the trigger, was a law-abiding citizen. As to 2nd Amendment rights, I believe every gun owner should have to serve in the militia. A careful reading of the Amendment seems to indicate that. Other than these few reservations, you and I are in full agreement.

Firearms are NOT like any other 'consumer product.' They are weapons and are inherently dangerous. A congressperson with a clear bias against private possession and use of weapons should never have a right to badger any witness or to prevent them from testifying on their understanding of legislation, existing or proposed.
Fact: The legislation being reviewed in the initial segment would have required owners of existing modern / modular sporting rifles (MSR) - which ARE NOT 'assault weapons' (a made up political term) - to be registered. The majority of MSR owners are fervently against gun registration, would not register any firearm and would indeed be classified as felons under that proposed law. Similar state level legislation passed in Connecticut had less than a 30% compliance rate years after passage.
The Congresswoman's behavior toward the witness is overtly biased and appalling. I would get up and walk out before tolerating such execrable behavior and would expect the same response from any reasonable individual.

The issue is in the lack of anyone who believes in future regulation having a rational definition of what needs to be done and with what kinds of guns and from what type of study. Hysteria about guns has made more people buy them not less. Also, a focus on the mass numbers of black kids being shot in inner cities is just as important as freedom of speech. Don't you?

In most states, there are laws that address criminal negligence regarding access to children. Gun manufacturers provide owners manuals replete with safety instructions. The good lady knows this, and she is a liar.

I think Katie just wanted that lady to hear another side of this topic. I have seen that other lady testify before and she only hears herself and her side. She doesn't like to go by the facts.
