among my favorites, along with Glazunov's number 4, Rimsky Korsakov's Sheherazade, Borodin's Prince Igor and kalinnikov's number one... The Russian soul is so vast!

I hear things in the opening section that sound a bit like Promenade from Pictures at an Exhibition. Same folk music source for both I wonder?

If you meant around 2:00 , I have got the very same impression. However, I have no idea about the origin of the similarity either.

Mussorgsky wrote Pictures from an Exhibition after attending his friend Viktor Hartmann's memorial. Hartmann was an artist, and ten of his pictures were displayed to honor him (he died suddenly of an aneurysm at age 39). Since Balakirev was one of the Mighty Five along with Mussorgsky, it would seem likely that he was suffering the same melancholy around that time, but this was written nine years earlier so no.

Although, Mussorgsky may have copied this. :O

@@mycreativepowerhouse Greetings :) As far as I know as all classical composers Russian great composers often used famous Russian folk songs/melodies!! That's why we can recognize these melodies in many compositions by different composers...

@@mycreativepowerhouse Hartmann was a great architect too. If I am not mistaken, it was he who designed the Millenium monument. He also tried to popularize the Russian revival architectural style which incorporated elements of traditional Slavic design into the form of eclectic neoclassical architecture.
