I had not heard Balakirev's name attached to any of his works until recently. I guess the music industry is busy promoting the mundane music that airs on every public and commercial station, or the operators have no imagination, maybe afraid to step beyond their view of what the listeners will digest. I've listened to all the forgotten treasures and am completely stunned as to what I've missed. These "desconocidos" from the Slavic and Scandinavian schools are every bit and maybe more are as talented and beautiful as any of the common stuff.

I'm hearing a lot of similar harmonies as those found in his 2nd Symphony, Balakirev developed a highly original musical vocabulary, as was his aim.
