Even stoned out of their heads, and totally wasted, Fleetwood Mac could out perform pretty much anyone live. They released amazing albums but their live shows kicked the vocals and music playing to even higher levels. They were a band that you needed to see perform live and in person to truly appreciate just what a talented group of artists they each were in their own right... Nicks, McVie, Fleetwood, Buckingham.
The dynamics in this band were something else. I remember Mick saying watching Stevie's performance near the end of this song was like as if Janis Joplin had possessed her. I love their music. Thanks Ken.
Yes, I think she chilled it down on purpose, for the intense passion that she was building up to... sometimes you don't "get it" until you see the destination.
Ken T. has an inside view, coming from his skill after mastering all the small components of singing, so I would always trust his view of what he's seeing and hearing, right in front of him. Add to that, Stevie admitted that she was coked up most of the time in that era. His point isn't about Stevie, it's about trying to sing and use all those small components when you are loaded.
I idolized Stevie as a teenager, musically, her style, everything. With a love of singing myself, it's hard not to want to emulate your favorite vocalist. But, you have to find your own niche in your "art" if you want to get ahead. As for Nicks and the drugs, yes, she probably was high here. But as you said, her vocals rarely falters. Thing is, she still has those iconic vocals today, at nearly 71 years old, (B-day May 26, 1948). She never shies' away from her crazy past though, and that more than anything, I admire about her...
Hi Ken, I know Stevie personally, i do agree that she was heavy into drugs back then, but in all fairness in which you did not bring up, that she is drug free now and sings awesome still to this day, check out her last live performance, anyways just felt i needed to say that, have a great day my friend!
I was a huge SN fan. I am not happy with the way the whole band treated Lindsey. The man had a heart attack. I wonder if they feel bad kicking him out for the second time because of Stevie. Sad situation. If it wasn’t for Lindsey’s insistence the band take them both on. Fleetwood Mac only wanted Lindsey originally.
Angela Baiers - Agree. Love the band, but what transpired with Lindsey was sad and unfortunate. I supported them in ‘87 when Lindsey walked out on them, but this time around I’m on his side. Just wish they hadn’t gone down that path and could have found a way to give their longtime fans what they wanted - a final album & tour with the five supergroup members.
Agree! I saw them in 1977 on the rumours tour, she was the same as she is here. I had the hots for her in a bad way, was right up front and didn't take my eyes off her for the whole concert.
I would agree because she's never been hugely expressive in the face but compare this to The Dance and there's a clear difference that's the result of more than time passing.
In 76 they were definitely high as shit all the time..according to themselves. Stevie admitted to carrying a gram of coke with her at all times in her boot so she always had her fix. She was more than likely wasted in this video.
Sorry hate all your comments! Except that Lindsay is awesome. She smashed this performance and is actually one of my favourites of all time she brings me goosebumps! If you want technical perfection that’s not true rock and roll!
Love Fleetwood Mac and Stevie! Awesome band! One time someone came up to me and asked, "Are you Stevie from Fleetwood Mac?!?" I cracked up laughing. But, walked away feeling flattered. There's no one else like Stevie!!!
I love this performance, she completely knocked it out of the park and beyond. It's raw, it's real and it's completely mesmerizing. I recently read in a book titled "Gold Dust Woman" that this was her very first time on tv.....ever. I think she did an incredible performance and left people awestruck. I watched the original episode of Midnight Special and said to myself, I absolutely have to see this band. I saw them in 1976 for the first time, and have gone to almost every show in my area ever since. One thing I will say is that almost every Rhiannon is different live. I also have to add that when she says "All the same, all the same, it's all the same", I believe that she is talking about herself and her connection to Rhiannon and the character she has created. Thanks for this fantastic video!!!
Love Fleetwood, love Stevie, Lindsey should NOT have been fired. He is definitely one of the reasons Fleetwood is regarded as an iconic band, with amazing rhythms and lyrics... it's a shame after so many decades the band still has issues
Agree. But now seems....late May 2019...that the Lindsey-less FM tour is proceeding, sell-out dates in most North American cities....with the addition of Mike Campbell/TP and the Heartbreaker and Neil Finn/XTC and Crowded House. I saw FM several times in 1987/Tango In the Night and 1990/Behind The Mask tours...Bily BUrnete and Rick Vito "replaced" Lindsey, then he (and also Stevie) rejoined FM for 1994's The Dance.
Glenn Leahey saw them last November with Campbell and Finn. The show was definitely impressive and those two are great musicians but they just didn’t quite have that unique amazing sound that Lindsey brings to the band. They also sang Lindsey’s parts. To me I felt like their vocals fell a bit flat. I was surprised and impressed with how good Stevie sounded and looked for 70 years old. Maybe there is something to that witch stuff. Lol!
Christinabobina I saw them in July last year at Wembley. We got a refund. You know they didn’t even rehearse. Stevie was the best vocals there. Chris sadly sounded shockingly awful.
When Stevie Nicks released her solo album and I first heard “ edge of 17”; my goodness, what an incredible voice!!! She must’ve been totally sober singing that song because it was absolutely incredible and totally on range. It takes a trained musician to have the ear to hear anything that’s really off key and I’m sure most of the crowd were probably stoned or drunk as well. Haha!
I love how Stevie Nicks and Christine McVie compliment each other's voices. Nicks with the more gritty rock and roll voice and McVie with a more clean pop sound. Just brilliant
Stevie Nicks had a dramatic vocal change after her throat problems. Gone was this smooth trill, replaced by a more raspy sound. Still great, but different.
Well I'm old enough to remember the 70s and yes most people were stoned whenever they had the chance. Just a product of the times. I also remember Stevie being the hottest woman on the planet, and now I understand. She was beautiful, young, newly famous and I'm sure had a free pass to whatever she wanted. Stevie Nicks is one of the few singers "in my opinion" that can get away with mostly singing in her chest voice. She does use her head voice once in a while but I think only when she feels the need. Mostly she's in chest voice.
I love your vids ken. I was so happy to see you do a video reaction to Fleetwood Mac. I may only be 24 but I absolutely love these guys. My favorite songs are landslide and the chain. My 2 favorite bands of all time are definitely Fleetwood Mac and Queen
I found it funny that you didn't like that part that you say that was a killer, I really really love this part and repeat that one over and over again.
Knowing what we do about that era, sure, she’s probably high. But I think her bangs and their shadow make her look more “affected” than she is. I think this is more just her stage presence. That, and Stevie is a beautiful goddess with the voice of angels, and thus, can do no wrong in my eyes. 😜
Stevie Nicks is just a phenomenal talent isn't she. As is the rest of the crew. I once saw Rickii Lee Jones in concert and she was at minimum drunk, and proceeded to get drunker as the show went on. As one might expect, her performance went down the tubes. Drugs and alcohol only make your performance better if the audience is drugged and drunk. Great video Ken, I love the commentary by you. Gives us a sense of history. Kevin
Thank you for posting this I used to watch this video on a daily basis. Stevie goes all crazy o at the end. Said she had to quit doing it like this pretty soon after or she would not be singing in 2021. :) Oh and Linsey playing in his PJ's is cool as well. Love that middle part where he goes all Lindsey!!!! Plus they had this version sped up vs the album version. I would have to say the drugs helped possibly not their health but their creativity. Hell look at Jimi H.
It's amazing how these iconic bands really shaped our youth. 52 now and Wow, we were so fortunate to grow up in this era!! Maybe I am time stamped, it just seems a lot of the music today just doesn't stand up! Music is lacking and certainly lyricallly challenged.
I remember watching that episode of Midnight Special and being moved by that song. Locked me in as a huge Stevie fan just on that performance alone. I was mesmerized by the her voice.
SHES NOT WASTED IN A ZILLION YEARS you can tell by the facial expressions and eye contact she even smiles which would have been a massive no no on coke!!!
Stevie Nicks!! She has that unique voice--I listened to this song again and again..still amazed at her kinda contralto and rocker voice!! Could I ask you for a voice tutorial on Stevie style?
Awesome band. Lindsey...great, yet somewhat underrated, guitar player. Stevie, one of the most distinctive vocalists. Instantly recognizable. Great vid as always Ken. Thanks for all you do.
They had all struggled for so long to catch on, there was no way they were going to let relationship breakups wreck the chance they finally got for success. Imagine Lindsey - whom Stevie says she left - then having to not only hang in Fleetwood Mac to stay on top of the music business, but still work up Stevie's songs from the skeletons she brought in to the studio. And he did, incredibly well. I was 14 Ken when they broke big with "Over My Head". This "Rhiannon" from Midnight Special, made FM radio airplay in the Midwest. Stevie had what I consider a 2-timbre voice, the mellow distorted side from the studio version of that song, and the inner belter she really wanted to be. The power voice was husky to my ear, not as good as the soft side. But it all as I hear it, blended into one terrific instrument by her later 50's. She watched Joplin in San Francisco as a teenager. There you have it... Here's the kicker for that band: If Bob Welch doesn't leave the band out of frustration in 1974 - touring on the underbill, no $, no airplay - they very probably all go home in poverty within about another year. It sent Mick Fleetwood looking for a guitarist for an album he owed his label, probably the last, except that it became the White LP with new additions Lindsey and Stevie. Over My Head, Say You Love Me, Rhiannon, Monday Morning, et al. They got so gigantic by 1977, that Bob's solo LP "French Kiss" turned into a hit also, and the back catalog started selling. So that's how to make it in music by quitting... 😄 - Roy Greenfield
Ken this was a fantastic Reaction you did on this legend! My first year experience in college in '84 when I was 19 living in the dorms, I "had" to put up a female poster like so many of the other guys did. I put up Madonna, you know the one that looks like she is an emaciated skinny little twig with the head tilt looking like she's calling your name. My new roommate was a 25 year old who served four years in the military prior to. He put up this huge poster of Stevie. The two musicians showed our age differences between us. And like you Ken, I truly appreciate the group, their individual talents and their entire history as I've gotten older.
I’m a HUGE Fleetwood Mac fan especially of this era of the band and Lindsey is the only guitarist I’ve ever heard who can make a complete and interesting solo out of essentially one note and how he manipulates it with bends ALL WITHOUT A PICK. I have basically been in love with Stevie since I was a teenager in the 1970s but I’ve lost so much respect for her for how she’s treated Lindsey recently. Christine is probably one of my favorite female songwriters and vocalists.
Thanks for your shout out to Bob Welch. That'll always be my favorite version of FM. But they sure found great replacements in LB and SN. I love that version, too. (The latest incarnation, not so much.)
Hey Ken! I can remember listening to that performance on the midnight special. You've proven that you can be a great musician and vocalist without all the drugs and non'sense! And... you love The Lord too.... Blessings buddy!
Stated in Wikipedia singing Rhiannon on stage was like performing an exorcism, Stevie's voice is natural as she speaks like that normally as she has a voice no other female has, after drugs her eyes opened up a lot and they would sell out any stadium in the world in a few days.
Barbie here. You're right, Ken. Stevie was high when she did this recording, as she describes in an interview many years later. That being said, I invite you to check out this performance of Rhiannon she did while sober, live in Chicago (recorded 2007, released 2009), and, I might add, after getting a professional vocal coach (Steve Real). She has said that she had been damaging her voice in the past, and that her vocal coaching has been "a blessing." I'd like to see/hear your reaction to this version, just for comparison. I present, Miss Stevie Nicks: ruclips.net/video/R1XSvMyuL2o/видео.html
Stevie's immense popularity proves the point very clearly that singing is an art form more than it is a technical effort. Technical perfection does not equal emotional delivery. Stevie does not have an extraordinary vocal range or a very good technique, but she has something even more rare: an ability to communicate on a level so deep that it cant be explained- just experienced.
I love love love Fleetwood Mac. Stevie Nicks was my first unofficial voice coach.haahaa! My Soprano voice didn’t kick in until I was in my 20s and then it was Mariah Carey because when I was in my teens I was a super alto. There is something so crisp and unique about Stevie Nicks & Fleetwood Mac‘s music. Damn they’re legendary and Mick Fleetwood -- AMAZING, as Lindsey Buckingham.
That vibrato is soulful as fuck. I've always thought Stevie's raspy, messy vocals were amazingly soulful in an earthy way. P.s. dude, she's not saying we're all the same. "It's all the same..." It's the anguish of the character she's channeling. As she sang in Stand Back, "no one knows how I feel, what I mean unless you read between my lines."
I love Fleetwood Mac one of my favorite bands great songs love the harmonies each of them have their own distinctive voice blended together great stuff.
This is one best live performances ever...period. The ending is a level that not many singers can ever reach especially a woman frontman. Its insane

Stevie Nicks is one of the few singers "in my opinion" that can get away with mostly singing in her chest voice. She does use her head voice once in a while but I think only when she feels the need. Mostly she's in chest voice.
Ken I'd have to say they did just fine and Stevie is one of the greatest singers.
I love your vids ken. I was so happy to see you do a video reaction to Fleetwood Mac. I may only be 24 but I absolutely love these guys. My favorite songs are landslide and the chain. My 2 favorite bands of all time are definitely Fleetwood Mac and Queen
This is a fun video, thank you Ken! I'm learning on my workbreaks.
That's great, Rielly!
I found it funny that you didn't like that part that you say that was a killer, I really really love this part and repeat that one over and over again.
I was saying I don't like drugs. I said the music was killer.
@@kentamplin Sorry then I interperteded it wrongly. Thank you for your fast reaction back to me.
Knowing what we do about that era, sure, she’s probably high. But I think her bangs and their shadow make her look more “affected” than she is. I think this is more just her stage presence. That, and Stevie is a beautiful goddess with the voice of angels, and thus, can do no wrong in my eyes. 😜
Thanks for weighing in, Carrie!
Kevin
Kevin O'Rourke I love Rickie Lee Jones & Benatar.
Rock on!
Notice the lack of in ear monitor????? Not too shabby for 1976 and live!! No auto tune either.
😀👍
And every man was in love with her.
Probably.
Rhiannon live 1979? Japan!!! WOW
It's amazing how these iconic bands really shaped our youth. 52 now and Wow, we were so fortunate to grow up in this era!! Maybe I am time stamped, it just seems a lot of the music today just doesn't stand up! Music is lacking and certainly lyricallly challenged.
Mic Fleetwood made the album sound dreamy. Love that album.
Tony Campbell 👍
Yes! Ms. Stevie was full of oodles of vibrato. ( chipmunk style with pizazz🌹) Awesome voice!
Indeed!
I love how you explain everything around the band to know. Im too young to know them, but will look up more of their stuff.
Tobias Hofbauer Awesome!
thanks for this, amazing band and I am about to see it.
I saw it, and she is amazing, they are amazing.
Great to hear that!
What a great breakdown Ken! Timeless band we all love and grew up with. Thanks for all great info. You are truly the best ever.
MARYBLEUZ Thank you!
She is amazing
Certainly!
I really like your vision beyond voice's ejecution. More realistic and human.
Thanks Angélica!
I remember watching that episode of Midnight Special and being moved by that song. Locked me in as a huge Stevie fan just on that performance alone. I was mesmerized by the her voice.
My friend...you really are a rock history encyclopedia...!!
How come so far you havent chosen to comment progressive rock?
A band that stood the test of time with their unique sound and run of many great songs like them very much.
SHES NOT WASTED IN A ZILLION YEARS you can tell by the facial expressions and eye contact she even smiles which would have been a massive no no on coke!!!
Fleetwood Mac was an awesome group that broke out in the late 70's. Love their music. ❤❤❤❤
Greatest of all time u said it right the 1st time
Patricia Floyd 👍
That guitar riff is so awesome! I remember when my guitar teacher showed me how to play it on his Fender Lead 2 guitar through his Roland JC-120 amp
😊
Stevie Nicks!! She has that unique voice--I listened to this song again and again..still amazed at her kinda contralto and rocker voice!!
Could I ask you for a voice tutorial on Stevie style?
Thanks for giving Christie McVie her props. Love the whole band but feel like she gets overlooked. ❤️
😀
I'm am super impressed with your insight Ken....You tell it like you see it or as it is....Great stuff man....Love your videos
Awesome band. Lindsey...great, yet somewhat underrated, guitar player. Stevie, one of the most distinctive vocalists. Instantly recognizable. Great vid as always Ken. Thanks for all you do.
True! Lindseys voice is truly amazing too.
Killer performance, indeed. I love this version of Rhiannon.
You are 100% on your critique, love your opinion its very genuine. Thanks for reviewing Stevie she is a gem.
Thanks Trayla! I'm glad you enjoyed it!

Thanks for sharing that with us, Steve!
Thank you for sharing that, actorzone!
Thanks for the visit. Rock on!
As she sang in Stand Back, "no one knows how I feel, what I mean unless you read between my lines."
allthatjazzspaz95 Thanks for the clarification, dude.
Stevie doesn't look "wasted" to me, just really into her music and performance.
Omg yes , when she kicked it up so did the band , thanks for pointing that out !!!!
👍
Wahooo!! I waited for a Stevie/Lindsey/Fleetwood video 😍 I'll see them live in Berlin, soon, I'm so excited!
Miss Me Should be great!
MY QUEEN
I love Fleetwood Mac one of my favorite bands great songs love the harmonies each of them have their own distinctive voice blended together great stuff.
What a great band. What a great sound!
