- A beautiful song that Kate recorded for the album "Common Ground" by Donal Lunny in 1996. The title means "Women of Ireland". The lyrics are by Peadar O'Doirnin and the music by Sean O'Riada.
Irish lyrics:
Tá bean in Éirinn a phronnfadh séad damh is mo sháith le n-ól
Is tá bean in Éirinn is ba binne léithe mo rafla ceoil
No seinm théid; atá bean in Éirinn is níorbh fhearr léi beo
Mise ag léimnigh no leagtha i gcré is mo tharr faoi fhód.
Tá bean in Éirinn a bheadh ag éad liom mur bhfaighinn ach póg
O bhean ar aonach, nach ait an scéala, is mo dhaimh féin leo;
Tá bean ab fhearr liom no cath is céad dhíobh nach bhfagham go deo
Is tá cailín spéiriúil ag fear gan Bhearla, dubhghránna cróin
Tá bean a dearfadh da siúlainn léithe go bhfaighinn an t-ór
Is tá bean 'na léine is fearr a méin no na tainte bó
Le bean a bhuairfeadh Baile an Mhaoir agus clar Thir Eoghann,
Is ní fhaicim leigheas ar mo ghalar féin ach scaird a dh'ól
English lyrics:
There's a woman in Ireland who'd give me shelter and my fill of ale
There's a woman in Ireland who'd prefer my singing to strings being played
There's a woman in Ireland who'd prefer me leaping than laid in the clay and my belly under the sod
There's a woman in Ireland who'd envy me if I got naught but a kiss
from a woman at a fair , isn't it strange, and the love I have for them
There's a woman I'd prefer more to a battalion,
and a hundred of them I will never get
And an ugly, swarthy man with no English has a beautiful girl
There's a woman who would say that if I walked with her I'd get the gold
A woman in night dress whose mein is better than herds of cows
With a woman who would deafen Ballymoyer and the plain of Tyrone
And I see no cure for my disease but to give up the drink - Видеоклипы
Thank you Kate Bush for respecting our language. This is one of the most beautiful versions of the song I have ever heard.
+Vincent Hughes kates mother is irish from dungarvan co'waterford
Perfect. Beautiful
Kate Bush mother was an Irish Dancer
She sings better Irish than me.
Unfortunately she was given a bum steer in the pronunciation of the word "Bean" ( Ban) . She is pronouncing "Bhean"(Van). Probably not her fault. Otherwise , beautiful.
This was played at our Mum's funeral, and her headstone bears the inscription 'bean na h'Eireann' which was supposed to mean 'a woman of Ireland' but think it actually says ' The women of Ireland'. Eitherway, this version is beyond praise. Simply of another world.
Bean means a woman so it’s correct; mná means women
Bean is singular as in 'woman of Ireland' which would be appropriate since she was one. The plural form would be mná, as in the song. But the song is about women not a woman.
Correct - it means woman of Ireland - go n - éiri leat
Beautiful song sung by our Beautiful Katie, I've been a fan since she appeared on the scene and I saw her first show at the Palladium ( London) , I wrote to her about her music in the eighties, letter sent to her Parents home in Kent, I didn't really expect a reply as she was a very busy much in demand artist by then, imagine how I felt when a very personal hand written letter came back to me on headed paper, it was a lovely letter and so friendly it was as if she knew me.
A true icon and so talented, her music means so much to people.
What a blessing! Well deserved!👍
That's fantastic! Hearing that makes me love her even more. So kind of her.
That’s a wonderful story. That letter is priceless. Please tell me you saved it ! I would guard it with my life
What a beautiful story! How lovely to receive a letter from Kate......that is a true artist when they remain humble and kind! Thank you for sharing this, I find going through the comments so inspiring that Humanity is so much more than the main stream media would portray! Blessings to you:)
I love this song - Kate is pure magic
Kate Bush's Mother is Irish and she was brought up on Irish music.
From Portlaw, County Waterford
Really? 😮
Did I just die and go to heaven? Yes, I think I did. Kate, you are a treasure. I have loved you and your work for 40 years.
I heard this on Irish radio last week on St Patrick's day. I couldn't believe it when I heard who the singer was. It is simply exquisite with our native language sung with beautiful 'blas'.
Never be surprised at the artistic beauty of this woman, Kate Bush is a true icon.
Yep, she’s half bla and very proud of her. Brilliant version.
Kate Bush is loved throughout the world for her individual talent and style. From her Irish Mother she possesses a unique talent in understanding and delivering true Irish music, which often embodies it's struggle through foreign occupation and famine. Not only Mná na hÉireann (Women of Ireland) are proud of Kate but all of Ireland! Thank you, your Mother would be so proud. Le gach dea-ghuí. Slanté x
Amazing! Being an Irish (Gaeilg') speaker I am thrilled at how Kate mastered this song, So proud of her .... (and her Irish Mother)
Pronounced very well indeed , time for another listen :^)
Dónal Luny helped her with the pronunciation, but she wouldn't stop until it was perfect
Kate's singing in this is just exquisite
Beautifully sung...Kate's voice sends shivers down my back...love it
Beautiful song sung beautifully by Kate Bush. How beautiful is our language!
I only heard this last week for the first time but I absolutely love it . An amazing song sung with such passion in a language that was not Kate’s first language. Spectacular. Thank Kate Bush .
I love Kate Bush and Ireland and this is so wonderful. I wish I could visit, love you from Croatia!
For a kiss on the wind that will make the land..... the jig of life.
Did you ever get to Ireland
@@seancreagh9257 Not yet, next year I hope! 💙
You can, it’s not yet a far…
OMG your pronunciation is soo respectful (and cute). Thank you so much for taking the time and the care to do that Kate 💝💝💝
Everything that Kate touches turns gold
Very impressed with her Irish.
As a singer, I can only add - Wow. Such feeling and emotion and understanding behind the lyrics. Such command. Bravo! X
Kate's mother coming from Ireland may explain her very nice pronunciation of the Irish. No doubt, Kate made visits to her mother's family and learned how Irish voices sounded, even if they weren't speaking Gaelic. Hers is my favorite recording of this song.
Exceptional
For a non native speaker ..
Greetings from Dublin Ireland brother and sisters...
Maìth thú.....Go hionntac
My Dad a Dublin man from the Ivey Buildings (Guiness property) spent my childhood summers there from Liverpool. Dublin has a special place in my heart. go back as often as i can.Love Kate x
Beautiful song and Kate’s singing emotive and strong.❤
Beautiful!! Listening to iit for the 1st time. Hauntingly magical and mystical....and still distinctly Kate Bush. ❤❤❤
Kate has a great voice for the Irishs songs
Absolutely beautiful ❤️ ☘️🎤🎼🇮🇪..." Women of Ireland".. 🎻😀
Best version of this beloved song on the internet bar none! Thanks Kate. You are a treasure to us all! Fair ple to ya!
Kate has inspired my art for decades 💗
I've been a Kate fan for decades but this is the first time I've heard her doing this... thank you RUclips! This is opening up a deep well. Just checked out her Lagan Love and it's interesting, controversial, etc.... wow. Glad I found this.
Thi song made me cry.✌️❤
Wow!! This has to be my favourite, so very well done Kate, you actually put us Irish to shame you covered it so well. Good on your mother for teaching you if like it should be. Well done.
Thank you Kate. My very favourite version of this magical song by O’Riada. The harp & fiddle accompaniment is so beautiful. Haunting.
Beautiful indeed and does full justice to our native tongue.
What a strikingly beautiful sound. Truely amazing, love this.
Dane: bought the album some 20 years ago when I lived in Ireland a few years. Hadn't checked the singers at all before listening. What a huge surprise when her unmistakable voice appeared. She is also much loved in Scandinavia.
Her dulcet tones soar into the mountains and down to the sea she is angelic and a remarkable sound coming to excite and captivate
Never heard this, amazing. fall in love with a lovely Eire women
What a beautiful song, and Kate's beautiful voice is mesmerizing!
Glad she's half Irish like me.By the way the little cottage by the sea is in achill in co mayo as i took the same cottage by camera.
So beautiful Kate, you’re an amazing artist ☘️
We played it at my mother's funeral a couple of months ago. Such a beautiful song and I know that every time I play it I will weep.
I am not Irish, although my grandpa's last name is Cuvi, which could be an alteration of Coovey, and which then could explain my eternal infatuation with Irish music.... I have admired deeply Kate Bush, I just think she is one of a kind and the artistic mother of a whole generation of incredible women. So, this recording is just something unique to me. I really shed tears and they were not sad tears at all.
It was possibly Ó Cuív which is an Irish name all right 😊
My best regards and congratulations from Hungary! 🇭🇺
my favorite version of this song by far!!!
Oh my lord, thanks, Symphony. I am a great Kate Bush fan, but indolent ... I have never come across this great track before. Kate speaks in tongues. I know something of her family history with folk music and such .... to hear her wondeful phrasing on this .... a great find, for me.
She is singing in Gaelic Irish.
Her mother was Irish.
The name of this song translates 'The Women Of Ireland'
You’ll never hear this on Irish radio , don’t know why but it’s a disgrace, beautiful song, should be out there.
Long live to a Reunited and Republican Ireland !!!! Greetings from the sunny south, from yours friends, the Spanish people.
THANK YOU! The Irish have had always warm feelings to the Spanish people. Through the centuries, Spain came to aid Ireland in hopes of breaking English oppression. Despite abysmal results, the Irish to this day have never forgotten that. Perhaps it won't be a Republican Ireland, but a complete Republic OF Ireland.
Nice comment, much appreciated
New walk?
What sort of name is that?
@@burnettis1 You're being too literal. it means new ways, new roads or new directions, basically new ways of doing things or new attitudes.
I've ALWAYS loved Kate, she's so special. I don't think there is a more beautiful sound than a good female vocal, and this is certainly that!
I first heard this song in the move Barry Lyndon. I bought the soundtrack.
I love the drawing of Kate with a violin! Thanks for posting this 💖
i think the poem is an aishling ....where ireland is imagined as a beautiful woman...i was once told by someone ...that this song has a geis (spell taboo or curse in the irish language ) that no man should ever sing it ..and if he does ...he won't have luck in love. :) Maybe that is just because today you only really hear women sing it:) . I love this version by kate. :)
Thats it! Is about Brigid
Beautifully Celtic 💚
J'adore Kate💙
I heard this song 20 years ago on a CD a cousin of mine had. At that time those CDs were not very original (hehe) and didn't have the names of the songs or the artists... I searched for this song every single year since then beacuse I found it beautiful, even though I had no idea (and I still don't) of what it said or what it was about. I am very proud I decided to follow a lead on someone who made a comment on a Enya video and that eventually brought me here! 20 years I searched for it. I will now enjoy it as much as I can... jesus a whole life has gone searching...
Shazam identifies music, and other programs.
I can't listen to this song at work, because it makes me cry every time. Just exquisite
Just beautiful!
My favorite song in Irish
Thank you for the translation! The Irish sure knows how to write songs!
Fabulous interpretation of one of my favourite melodies ❤️
Thinking of all our Mná today, 😥 R.I.P Ashling
Mesmorisingly and hauntingly beautiful, thank you Kate.
This song (composed by Seán Ó Riada and Peadar Ó Dornín) was first recorded by Ceoltóirí Chualann, then later done instrumentally by The Chieftains.
Other recordings: Bob James (1976), Ronnie Montrose (1986), The Christians (1989), Sinéad O'Connor (1995), Alan Stivell (1995), Mike Oldfield (1996), Sarah Brightman (aka So Many Things, 1998).
Kate with her usual excellence. She perfected the pronunciation for this song although not an Irish speaker. This is terribly beautiful. An ode to her Irish mum Hannah perhaps.
im proud to have Irish heritage
Thank you Kate this is beautiful and know that we love you too
Kate has a beautiful voice that suits very well to all types of songs but this one is a very special one for me.Thank you for posting it.

How good to hear. Happy St. Patrick's.
I was only familiar with this song through Jeff Beck. I'm sure he would have conceded Kate's version. Really fantastic, especially with the pictures of Ireland. Slainte!!
Kate is very wonderful hard not to love that voice I didn't know of this till Sharon Corr did it with Jeff Beck, love the Red Shoes bit she had Jeff on.
Wonderful poem loved Kate since Eric Idle had her on NBC show Saturday Night Live in 1977-78 season I was hooked by the 2 songs she played.
Ruttles-"All You Need Is Cash" was a SNL spoof of the Beatles Idle did as well. RIP Mr.Beck we all miss you on this side on the pond.

Excellent clip , excellent song
It's so beautiful!!! So tenderly!
...eire is so beautiful...
Ta mna go ana mhaith.👏👏👏👏👏👍
tears of honor & joy.
Besides her inimitable voice and great arrangement, she gives a straightforward rendition, not dragging it out. It sounds more like the complaint it is. Must be one of the shortest versions on RUclips.
Absolutely beautiful
My island.
HOW MAGICAL IN THIS VERY MOMENT OF SOME PEOPLE HAVE BREXT IT IN MIND
Beautiful xxx🙏🙏
Ah Symphony, your video really underlines the purity of this graceful song :D. And, thank you for letting us the lyrics, both in Irish and in English ! :)
I didn't imagined the lyrics were so moving.. All very subtive, like your work for this video, as martinekkes said..
Beautiful from start to finish, top to bottom. Don't know if there's any Irish in me, but I hope there is.
Beautiful
Tune played instrumentally by The Chieftains in the Kubrick film "BARRY LYNDON" under the title 'Women of Ireland" sung beautifully in the Irish language by the iconic Kate Bush.
Kate does a magnificent job x
Great vid. Great voice, very nice images.
