I know you made these videos a long while ago, and I'm not sure where you're at now, but this series has really helped sooth me at a time I really needed it. Thanks for sharing such a beautiful journey.
Funny to see that your first camping site was also my first camping site in Japan. It's actually always my first and last camping site when arriving and leaving the country.
Laid Back camp in real life. Good effort. What weight are you carrying. Im jealous. Any easy trails for older people. Older westerners not easterners. Those buggers are fit as. Try Korea. Trails there walk the length of the country, cycle or otherwise. Did you get lost. Wrong turns. Dead ends. Gives me inspiration.
Hi Stephen, I carried about 15kg at the time (including the tent, sleeping bag, food & water) - probably could have trimmed that down somewhat... I would love to go back to Korea and walk it one day! I got lost numerous times!! It's funny now looking back but at the time not so much haha.
Alan have been enjoying working through your series. Could you give us an idea of your rig. Clothing and how you kept that laundered. Camera you used. Any useful sites that were helpful.
Hi Ed, glad you're enjoying them. I was thinking about maybe having a separate episode about that. I tried to include it in Ep5 but it dragged and was boring so I cut it out (for now). I hand-washed all my clothes when there was no washing machine available - but Japan has "Coin Laundries" eeeverywhere for peanuts! I used the Canon GX7 Mark ii. But I switched to 720P resolution to save space on my memory card, which I had forgotten about and am regretting now. The only websites I tended to use were facebook groups, specifically "Touring Japan by Bicycle", "Free Camping and Hot Springs in Japan" and "Bicycle touring, hiking and friends in Japan" to name but a few.
Thanks your reply. Yes maybe when you get time you could cover the kit and maybe let the suppliers know. For example your sticks, shoes, best clothing options, tent, splints, foot care remedies. No hurry for it and maybe you could add an info list or tips into future edits. It’s a great adventure you had.
Correct me if I'm wrong Alan but the address system in Japan has a town or suburb divided into smaller areas. Each of these is divided into even smaller areas. The houses in these are given numbers issued in order of when they were built. When the americans occupied japan after WWII this system drove them crazy and they tried but failed to change this system :)
Darn.. 34lbs is a good bit of weight but it's not incredibly high. Curious- do you have any items with you which have not been used or if you could have used something else that you're already carrying in its place? Multi-purposing is a good way to reduce base weight along with realising what you actually need. It's a learning experience that every traveler can attest to. You're doing great! 1/3 of the way and staying positive. You're inspiring others to experience things they dream of! Keep Trekking
I could have carried even fewer clothes and not taken other smaller items. I didn't need my tablet for example other than to record statistics. Originally I had taken an extra pair of trainers but left them in Osaka when I passed through. If you are happy to pay more money you can buy a lighter sleeping bag and a lighter tent, although mine weren't too heavy. Thanks for the encouragement!
Another amazing video :D I'm planning a trip this october to japan but in bicycle. Currently I’m searching for locations where I can sleep without problem. Do you have the locations of the places where you camped? It would be amazing if you could share also that.
You're going to have a great time! I didn't plan where I slept in advance. Up to this point I spent most of the time in hostels. I also used Couchsurfing when I could. From here on out I wild camped most of the time or stayed in Michi no Eki (road side stations). There are also a few facebook groups specifically for cyclists I would recommend ("Touring Japan by Bicycle", "Free Camping and Hot Springs in Japan" and "Bicycle touring, hiking and friends in Japan", for example).
I am also planning a new trip to japan for next September to October. Do you already know your route? These are the camp GPS coordinates from my previous trip. Just paste them in Google map. It's actually relatively easy to camp in Japan and you don't really need other people spots. Except if you are looking for great spots. Most of my spots are pretty bad actually. Last time I prepared nothing. I just camped anywhere and I never got in trouble. The key is to leave early. This year I'll probably try to camp more near temples. People seems to do that a lot. I highly recommend a free standing tent. If you need to pitch your tent in the soil you will have a lot less opportunities. I also recommend a one person tent. In 2016 I brought a 2 persons tent. It was OK but on a few occasions I was not able to camp on great spots because of the size of my tent. The smaller your footprint the greater the opportunities :) Day 1 Osaka (rinku) 35km 34.409885, 135.293488 Rinku park ** WAKAYAMA Day 2 Osaka - Koya 75km 34.210402, 135.572677 Toilets * Day 3 2/3 Day in Koya 35km 34.201722, 135.701496 Closed road near Nakabaru river ** Day 4 Koya - Shingu 110km 33.697698, 135.988759 Empty field next to the road (noisy) * Day 5 Shingu - Satono 95km 33.509817, 135.625381 Wood(monkeys) ** Day 6 Satono - Hidaka 85km 33.932957, 135.135362 Forest trail** Day 7 Hidaka - Wakayama 50km 34.218089, 135.146138 Port * SHIKOKU Day 8 Tokushima - Yahata 75km 33.915223, 134.193173 Closed road ** Day 9 Yahata - Nishiiyayamamura 63km 33.887518, 133.804958 Rest area *** Day 10 Nishiiyayamamura - matsuyuma 150km 33.889580, 132.706096 Park ** HIROSHIMA Day 11 Hiroshima - Itsukushima 45km 34.289397, 132.344549 Forest trail ** Day 12 Itsukushima - Okunoshima 110km 34.336412, 133.003658 Parking * SHIKOKU Day 13 Okunoshima - Mukoujima 40km 34.3683334,133.2070744 Viewpoint building *** Day 14 Mukoujima - Sakurai 76km 33.990887, 133.060587 Beach ** Day 16 Sakurai - Higashimiyoshi 100km 34.030710, 133.904291 Wood ** Day 17 Higashimiyoshi - Wakayama 90km 34.232237, 135.140737 Park * WAKAYAMA Day 18 Wakayama - Osaka (rinku) 45km 34.409885, 135.293488 Park ** OSAKA Day 19 Osaka Rinku park ** Day 20 Osaka Rinku park **

QUESTION OF THE WEEK: What do you think are the top 3 most popular sports in Japan? ⚽🏀🏈⚾🎾🏐🎱
baseball, football and basketball
I don't know the official numbers, but from my impression you got 1 out of 3 correct 😉

@@LetsTrySomethingNew likewise!
I prefer earlier hours for hiking/travel.
So many reasons. Start with the sun, end with the sun. Rest plenty and absorb all!
In theory, so do I. But when it comes to actually getting up, my body tells me to shut up and go back to sleep 😅
