  • Evinrude 2hp outboard boat motor project update. This 2 stroke outboard engine is from 1977 and is a simple 2 horsepower boat engine. In a previous video, I asked if it was worth fixing up this old outboard engine and in this video I provide an update of the components that are working and the components that still need to be repaired or replaced.
This old two-stroke outboard motor was in worse shape than I realized with several seized parts and very little that was in working order. Johnson Colt outboards are the same these 2 hp Evinrude motors.
Here's a playlist all about this engine and what finally happened! • Evinrude 2 - old Evinr...

My father owns this engine, been sitting in the store for decades, and recently I decided to revive it. So I changed it's ignition coil, impeller, bought the carb rebuild kit, fixed it's starter (had to bend the spring, modified it a bit cause it's broken), all from AliExpress China cause they're cheap. Then it occurred to me, it used contact points condenser for it's ignition system, but then I couldn't find them parts and I don't want to spend money on it's original parts online, so I was thinking "why not I just change it to electronic ignition system instead of the old outdated contact points?" So, I removed the contact points and the condenser, and put in a new single point universal electronic ignition module (MOBILETRON SIG 01) and now, it runs perfect! No more misfire and lack of spark power! Nice video btw!

That's so cool that you brought yours back in the way that you did!

I just picked up a 1.2hp Johnson colt. Pretty much the same motor, can’t wait to get it running and on my little 10ft aluminum.

That's how its done, piece by piece. When its done it is very gratifying.

Bombardier still sells parts for old OMC outboards. They have a parts catalog for this exact engine on their website. Everything you would ever need you can buy from them. You can even get a new piston and new piston rings to solve your low compression issues. It’s 100% possible to get this thing running like brand new if you want to spend some money on it.

If you have a multimeter you can test the magneto coil and ignition system to make sure it can pass current. A meter is a really good troubleshooting tool.

Free advice. Those cheap aftermarket carb kits (like on Amazon) won't last. You'll be rebuilding that carb very soon after using them. Go with OMC OEM kit or at least a Sierra kit. You'll thank me later. Love the old Evinrudes and I'll second Brandon's Garage. He's helped me more than he knows.

I know historically there was a big difference between the 'good' kits and the 'cheap' kits - but I kinda want to see if they're still bad!

I have a bunch of new petcocks OEM if needed. they all leak after a while. 75psi is fine. never cheap out on carb kits. sierra or OEM only. bowl gasket disintegrates. I hope brandon locktited the screw for the starter or it will just loosen. the mag plate just has a screw type clamp that tightens or loosens it with 1 flathead screw. takes me 5 minutes to take it off, clean it and put it back on. this motor is as simple as it gets. remove cylinder head and clean piston top. new oiled gasket. compression will come up even more.

Just echo a few other posts - if you can find an OMC carb kit they are better quality. I had an old 7.5 hp Evinrude that only made it a couple years before needing a rebuild. That was on pump gas with ethanol which probably contributed to it. Keep up the great work, I'm excited to see that little guy run again. I'm gonna guess that Suzuki is either a 15 or a 20hp?

Look at the money spent on this project as money spent to educate (both yourself and your viewers!). It will pay dividends down the road on other outboards that need repair.

I would recomend using OEM carb rebuild kits. the aftermarket ones are junk

90 PSI is the thresh hold for able to start and run for a sec and looses all the compression as soon as it starts and wont run longer than a bit. Needs rings at a minimum

completely false. these have a very low starter gear. spin it over with a drill it would be higher. 9.5hp runs just fine as low as 60psi.

Hi Wayne, Thanks for the video. I inherited a brand new 1982 2 hp evinrude from my father in law....it was still in the original box! That was at least 10 years ago...I had it running then and just started it today and it started right up. There was no gear case oil so I went to replace that but I can only find one screw....am I missing something? Cannot seem to find an operators manual online which I guess isn't surprising given the age!!!

only 1 screw yes. you fill it by taking driveshaft out. do the impeller too.

Wow that’s awesome - congrats! The mixture screws can be fiddly. Brandon’s Garage might have a video on adjusting them.

Did you ever replacing the piston rings on this motor to get some more compression. I have a motor that slow on compression and I can't seem to find piston rings for it
