- In this video, I explore North Wilkesboro Speedway which was opened in 1949 and hosted NASCAR until it's closure in 1996. However it was reopened in 2010 and hosted several races before closing again in 2011. Since then, it has been abandoned and is in a state of decay.

Thank you. Wish they would bring this back
It's coming to iracing they just cleaned and scanned the track.
They have with government funds they are racing in August and October
Lots of incredible historic moments from that place. Real shame to see it like this.
I use to go to the race at North Wilkesboro. Sure do miss it. Instead we got another boring 1.5 mile track owned by Bruton Smith.
Well u can go in August to see racing
Another fantastic explore, though it's sad to see it rotting away...nice music as well, thanks for sharing! 👍
Decided to look this up since they're actually virtually racing here today! Crazy how long it's sat abandoned 😮
I sure wish someone would step up to the plate and rebuild this place-I dont know about yall but sure feels like Jr Johnson would step out anytime during this video. Thank you for making this video.
Junior Johnson is dead he died December 20,2019
North Carolina government through $15 million at it and another persons also going to throw 1 million at it
Hopefully this track can be revived soon
Growing up there I remember races there in the real days of NASCAR. Before the stands in Turn 1 and 2 and the backstretch suites. So wish the Smith’s would do something with it instead of just letting it fade into the ground that is already taking it over.
iRacing was somehow able to scan this track and they're going to be doing a special next Saturday on the 9th on Fox. With throwback paint schemes and all. Is this track even drivable to do it in real life?
we as a community need to help and repair this track and have it as a mussem so people can visit the history
Awesome video, I miss that place like a dead brother!
Thanks!
If I win the lottery I going to try and revive North Wilkesboro
Props! Thanks for Sharing the content
Thanks!!
Great video, did anyone bother you while you were recording?
No, didn't see anyone.
Man alot of great racing went own there sad to see it abondon damn shame historic track
Breaks my heart, loved this track
I think after Saturday's event, we might see a revival of it!!
Should be turned into a museum so the original paintings on the buildings and signs can be saved and original.
This makes my head hurt a lot.
My Uncle owns this. He let me drive my go cart on it. It was really fun. He is planning on re opening it next year! Maybe not for Nascar but for more local type racers.
Oh nice!! I'm sure a lot of people will be excited for it to reopen.
Your uncle must be Bruton Smith/SMI because he still owns this track.
Like what benefit do you get from lying about this? Go get some counseling
Your uncle does not own it
His his initials DJT? lol
If it don,t work, we will have to watch Dirt Track Racing on the other cable channel
?
Track looks good after Jr had it cleaned. Did you have any trouble with the old guy there?
Didn't see anyone.
Unknown Ventures jump over the back stretch fence?
If Nascar bring this track back it would need a $50 to $70 million renovation plus a newly repaved track. Plus it need a top of the line sponsorship to keep it going. And add to that spend 10 to 20 million dollars for state of the art lighting system for that track.
You could revive this and do a great job for 10-15 M. It won’t be state of the art but it shouldn’t be. You’d lose the character of it.
Thanks
By the way, this race track was featured in Cars 3
If NASCAR wanted to get back on track (literally) it would write a 15 million dollar check, buy the speedway, resurface it, and rebuild the infrastructure, and put it back on the schedule. Same with Rockingham. But it makes too much sense.
Have you done the Nashville fairgrounds track?
No I haven't. Never thought of going there. Now that you brought it up, I think I should explore it since I live in Nashville lol.
@@UnknownVentures A fellow Tennessean. I LOVE IT!!!!!!
I'm planning a trip to see this track. Do you need any special permission to get in to take pictures and footage? Thanks in advance for your help!
I was doing a road trip to different places and this was one location were I just stopped by to take the footage. I didn't see anyone to ask for permission so I just went in.
My understanding is the owners live on site, and will chase away 'trespassers', but I've heard if you approach them you...might have a chance.
I actually snuck in once, and as I was leaving, there was a truck near my car with 2 people in it. I sat for a few, but nobody made contact with me.
Could anyone please tell me the name of the song used in this video?
Name of the music is The Bayou
Kick myself for not seeing a race at Wilkesboro or The Rock. Hope there's a 2nd chance out there somewhere.
Well it doesn't look in that bad shape. I mean, with a few millions of investment they could bring it back. The track is preatty clear also thanks to iracing.
They just announced racing in August on pavement then in October they race on dirt after ripping out the old pavement 😁
How did you get in?
Nascar abandoned good fan favorite tracks like this (also a driver favorite) to build new cookie cutter, same old mile and a half tracks that produced the same boring racing week after week chasing the almighty dollar. Some of those tracks have lost a date and they don't draw any more fans than North Wilkesboro (and Rockingham, some of the best racing ever in Nascar) could when they were open. If they'd have put a few dollars into North Wilkesboro and Rockingham, they'd have kept most of the fans they lost trying to gain the new fans that came and went in about 10 years of the boring racing. Now even places like Michigan (my closest track, I go both weekends) gets barely as many fans as these abandoned tracks did. They removed 100,000 seats because they only get 75,000 now on a good weekend.
Nascar screwed up dropping some of the short tracks.
Track Owners did not NASCAR blame Barhe and Smith
@@JJA1987 It was Nascar forcing them to.
I went to high school with Mark Martin.
Raced against him once at Bville Speedway and several times on the backroads. I watched Nascar in the 80's on sunday night tape delay. Been to 12 different tracks, eventually became start/finish ticket holder at Kansas Speedway. 1.5 was new and refreshing but never as exciting as the smaller tracks. The only reason to pay for Sunday Tickets is to see the REAL stars, of which few remain. I preferred Saturday races at smaller tracks, less traffic, cheaper and often just as good racing. Those days are gone. Today the Saturday races draw few because 1.5 is predictable. Nascar is certainly dying this year. If I were running it I'd cut a deal, rebuild N Wilkesboro and turn it into a premier testing and racing venue. It's close to most team homes and charlotte motor speedway. Get creative Nascar !
@@Mark13tol No it wasn't it was Burton Smith and Bob Barhe who forced NASCAR too
There were 3 things that made me quit anything to do with Nascar, (1)
was when they left North Wilkesboro Speedway. (2) was when Earnhardt
died at Daytona. (3) was when Nascar decided to go WOKE about the
Confederate flag. Each one of those drove me away and I haven't watched a
race since and personally I don't care if they ever come back to NWS,
I'm done with Nascar forever now. Btw I quit watching MLB in '93 after
the rich players decided to strike for more money and didn't play a
world series that year, and the NFL and NBA is just a bunch of rich WOKE
cry babies so I don't and never will watch those again either. I've
found that watching local races and sports is much better and deserve my
money to support them. Look fans, we have the power to control these
rich people when they do stupid things, but if we let them get by with
it, we will always be at their mercy.
