Congratulations DCA, both you and Thomas have been chosen to be contestants on the History Channel Alone Series. You have both decided to take a bushcraft knife, a small axe, a saw and a multitool as part of your 10 allowed items all of which are available at KnifeCenter. What did you both choose?
Neither DCA or Thomas, but White River FC5, Gransfors Bruks Small Forest Axe, Silky Bigboy, Leatherman Signal
I think we need to include Seth in this question too
Great question! Knife: Esee 6 with machined 3D Micarta scales. Saw: Silky Sugoi or Zubat, nothing with a folding handle and no brand but Silky deserves consideration. Axe: not really needed with the Esee, I’d take either food or more ways to catch food. If I’m getting an axe as a free choice, it’s going to be the one I took to Alaska with us when we moved up there to live: Gränsfors Bruks Scandinavian Axe. Since Knifecenter doesn’t carry Gränsfors Bruks, I’d take a Hults Bruk Akka, the closest equivalent.
Dear DCA, what are the chances you can get through a whole show without saying “Quote, unquote “ even one time? You don’t have to count the time you just read it.
Hey ya'll. Long time listener, first time caller. My question is about DLC coatings on blades. It is my understanding that the purpose of DLC is to provide a very tough, scratch-resistant coating on a blade. My surface level googling reveals that the hardness of DLC is in the 80-98 Rockwell range. How does this affect the ease of sharpening once you reach the DLC coating, and are there any special measures that need to be taken to sharpen a knife with a DLC coated blade?
Burlap Micarta is definitely Nutty Buddy
Yep. My first thought. I love those things. Sooooo delicious.
I love the look of Abalone shell Inlay for knife handles and the burlap micarta flavor is butterscotch.
Hey DCA and @knifecenter I’m moving to an island with a 3” limit on folders and looking for something that will be a good EDC for things like fishing, hiking, and everyday tasks in that humid and salt-water filled locale, what would you recommend? Thanks!
Hi DCA, can you please showcase some of the best of the best, no holds barred, price no object camping and bushcraft knives. Only the best Knifecentre has to offer. Go wild!
Thanks DCA and Thomas. Love linen and canvas micarta, burlap also good. Just plain feels good....a well done G10 can also be very desirable.
@2:42 pretty sure it’s Stefano Pederiva.
Hi DCA. I own a Condor mini Duku and never know how to describe it: small machete or big knife? Where do you draw the line between the 2 categories and where do choppers come in as well? Cheers and thx
machete is thin flexible blade meant for brush clearing, big knife is meant for actual slicing cuts or chopping cuts as opposed to hacking quickly like a machete. a big knife will be much thicker and much heavier than a small machete. look at a becker bk9 vs a tramontina 12 inch machete for a good example
I miss the Leatherman Juice series. Bring it back with a TSA safe model.
As long as there's a warranty they're not coming back.
A Juice S2 with a decent diamond/crosscut file instead of the blade would be an instant buy for me. Heck, a Skeletool with scissors instead of the blade would make my day too. -DCA
To the survival knife for the truck question - Knife Center currently has the Ontario RAT Nr. 7 on sale for $92, so you could save $50 vs the Becker. Also made in the USA, Micarta scales, 7" coated carbon steel 0.19" = 3/16" blade (not 0.14" like on the Knife Center website according to Ontario Knife) and a decent size for most tasks including batoning and chopping. Could even be used for tactical applications in a pinch.
note that the ontario knives do tend to have a bit worse fit and finish and all of my ontario knives came with absolutely ATROCIOUS factory edges and grinds.
@@acid6urns True, but for 2/3 the price of Becker you are getting the same steel and Micarta scales which you can mod to fit your hand. As a truck knife you can depend on when needed, I think it would be OK.
Favorite scale material is stabilized wood. Nothing like the feel and grip. 🎸🔪
Hi DCA and Thomas! My favorite handle material is polar bear tooth. My grandpa who passed away a few years ago made a file knife using a dead polar bears K-9 as the handle. It’s natural swell makes it really comfortable. It is one of a kind and rare with the odds of finding a dead polar bear while in Alaska and making something by hand all to be passed it down makes it the best to me by far.
Hi DCA!
I was thinking about buying a CQI handle scaled Spydiechef but it got me thinking. How resistent is the anodization of titanium against scratches? How well do the different handlescale finishes (paint, anodization etc) work against all the dangers that lurk in a pocket?
Favorite handle material is whatever plastic mora uses. It’s very light and very strong. Burlap micarta is coffee flavor 🤤
Burlap is coffee flavor. Satisfying first thing in the morning and good for the rest of the day {^_^}. I've been dying my natural micarta turquoise and or burnt sienna recently and I'm enjoying the look
Burlap micarta is beef jerky of handle material, everyone loves it
Your right 😂 it does look like beef jerky, with fat lines too 👍🤘🤩
Interesting question. The first thing that popped in my head when you first asked the question about burlap is either a coffee (probably a latte) or pecan.
1. Micarta (non-polished)
2. titanium
3. Micarta (polished)
4. carbon fibre
5. aluminium
I love burlap micarta thank you
Gotta say plain Ole G10 is my favorite. Durable, affordable, and lots of color choices. Burlap micarta is definitely mocha flavor
My favorites are, in no particular order: nice woods, G10, thermoplastic elastomers, engineered laminates like Richlite and Micarta.
burlap is like triscuits or the unsweetened shredded wheat, and my favorite is mint (natural g2)
Why don’t you add the price on screen when you put the name up?
It's probably subject to change due to various factors in the future, so giving a hardscope on the price might give people false hopes in the future.
@@northtexansquid5678 that doesn’t really add up if he says the price
@@shane_si2642 It does when he says price right now.
Favourite handle materials are G10, natural canvas micarta or burlap micarta. For hunting knives, I like a blaze orange G10 for visibility while field dressing game/better potential to avoid loss. I like my handles well and thoughtfully machined for optimal ergonomics.
DCA and Thomas, thank you for all these videos. I look forward to them every week. I have a question that I think would be cool: what discontinued knives do you think could be resurrected/updated? I’ve been reminiscing about past Spyderco knives and was thinking that models like Centofante 3, Caly 3, ATR, Captain and Caspian Salt would be cool to bring back with new steels, locking mechanisms, etc. Thoughts?
Canvas micarta: coffee bean, tobacco leaf, tea leaf
My favorite knife handle material kinda depends on what I'm carrying. If it's an old school slipjoint, then no question, it's bone, and I prefer shades of brown or green but I also have slipjoints with scales of various other materials. If it's a fixed blade or old school lockback, I prefer wood, again, obviously, in shades of brown. If it's a modern folder then I'm good with just about anything. I've got a 26 year old Benchmade Mini Griptilian with just plain black plastic handle that has served well for 26 years and still going strong, I also have a Benchmade Mini Osbourne with green aluminum handle that's perfectly fine with me, as well as some Spydercos with plastic and G10 scales. For kitchen knives, I also prefer wood. I have three Shun knives that are my go to knives and they have the black resin impregnated wooden handles that just feel good and don't get slippery. I also have some 60ish year old Ontario and Old Hickory kitchen knives with wooden handles that I use occasionally.
Favorite handle material is green dyed spaulted maple Burl. It looks so good! I wish mother of pearl shell was more abundant and much thicker as it looks so great that i eant it on fixed blades. Its dangerous to grind though.
Hi KC, I’ve learned that the broader or taller a knife is, the more potential it has to be thinner behind the edge for more optimal slicing geometry. What are some broader than average edc knives (in the 3-3.5 inch length) you’d recommend? Multiple price ranges appreciated.
Fav Handle/Scale Materials:
For Folders…
• 1st - Carbon Fiber
• 2nd - Aluminum
…because they are the highest strength to weight ratio, while also offering premium feel and and unlimited shape/design capabilities.
For fixed blade, paracord wrap, it offers versatile color & grip customization options while keeping the knife insanely light.
Besides a bar blade, what kind of cutting tools does Thomas carry on the weekend.? Cheers from Australia.
Burlap is definitely mocha/ coffee flavored!
Hi David,
What knife handle rules them all?
I want a knife with some copper that will patina over time but I don't want the weight of full copper scales. Is there a drop point folder around or under 5 ounces out there with thin copper inlays? I'd prefer at least three inches of blade.
Flytanium has bugout titanium scales you can get a copper inlay for and same with their arcade knife. I don’t know how much weight the copper inlays would add but they’re pretty light otherwise.
@@michaelarellano8632 nice, thanks
I love the feel of a good Richlite handle.
Pecan Pie is the flavor of the day.
I need recommendations on a Truck/Vehicle knife. Needs to be an all around knife. Camping, Survival, EDC. It must be less than 10 inches overall to fit in a 30MM ammo can and a fixed blade. What would you recommend in the under $100.00, under $200, and over $200 categories?
Burlap micarta is baked potato flavored.
I really enjoy the Lime flavor G10 on the Bestech Lizard, haven’t seen a comparable color on any other
Hello Dave, just a little question. Which options do we have in small edc Magnacut fixed blades like Buck alpha scout elite or Viper Handy? Thank you for al your work
White River M1 in magnacut is awesome. Heat Treat on point and amazing quality
the bradford guardian 3.2 is great. so is the 3.5 in magnacut. i edc a guardian 3.5 in vanadis 4e (european version of cpm 4v) and i like it a lot.
MKM Pocket Tango designed by DCA. Half Face Blades Cav Jr and Feather Light. Tactile Knife Dreadeye and Osprey. MKC Fieldcraft and others. Schwarz Overland and Confidante. ESEE Sencillo. Cypress Creek Woodthrush and Copperhead. Chris Reeve Backpacker and Inyoni.
Wow, I didn't know there were such a big amount of options. Now I have to invest some tome investigating about them.
Thank you very much guys 👍
Hi,
Love the channel. I have begun some knife collecting and I have been concerned about the effects of time on knives. Even for a stainless knife, would rust build up on the edge if one doesn't oil it and compromise its ability to cut? Does the sharpness of knives mean much when you're collecting knives? Is the factory edge sufficient? I do at least want to entertain that I can pick up any of the knives I collect on a moment's notice and use it as it was intended.
Burlap micarta is beef jerky flavor.
Micarta in general is my favorite handle material.
Would the CJRB Pyrite warncliffe blade be able to to swapped into a pyrite with the drop point? I have one I love the handle of but I like the alt blade shape much better
Carbon fiber or G10 for me.
Which knife would you pick? A Cold Steel Leatherneck SF or a Ka-Bar 1266 modified tanto fixed blade knife 8".
I don't know what you call the blue and red pan scourers, the rectangular very tough ones. Well, use the micarta process but those instead of fabric. You can add a bit of color and it comes out really nice wnd tough too ❤
Oh and you’re dead on about the dogwood ❗️ Santoku balance 😊love that knife, but can’t get the Kizer MoMo out of my kitchen lately…..
Most serious question;
Hey DCA, I am training to be the first person on Mars. What would be the best knife to bring on my trip through the cosmos? (Cyber truck themed knives need not apply)
Burlap micarta is root beer.
But my favorite handle material is probably micarta because it feels nicer than G10 or FRN and it ages nicely.
Ah, the other KnifeCenter burlap micarta exclusive wasn't on the table... that Spyderco Shaman in S90V is long gone though and apparently pricey on the secondary market. It's neat, but the action on my specific one isn't great. I polished up the liners and washers and played around with the pivot tension and it helped a bit. Seems like the Compression lockbar has too much tension on it as if it's fully disengaged from the blade, the action is decent now, and it takes much more force to disengage than my other Compression locks. Haven't taken it apart again to try that. Suppose I could try a CME instead to get extra leverage 🤷♂
Burlap Micarta's flavor to me is Root Beer. Old Timey, complex, hits the spot, but maybe not for everyone.
I think of burlap micarta as a pecan waffle flavor. With or without syrup.
Mr. Anderson my edc for the past twoish years has been the Benchmade 200 puukko.as you know with its discontinuation. What would you recommend in stainless like s30vn and the same size or bigger.
I like a hard rubber for grip purposes. G-10 is great. Micarta is fine. GFN/FRN is ok.
I'm partial to shredded carbon, ironwood, and linen micarta.
Love the videos, have a question, looking at purchasing upwards of 5 or 6 knives all possibly the same with a handle material the I can have either engraved or laser etched for gifts, was looking at knives with copper but don't know how well the handle will accept engraving. Any help would be greatly appreciated 🙏
I believe the Cjrb pyrite with the solid stainless scales has been recommended for this exact scenario in a previous FAQ
@@lukelatourette7692 thanks 👍
Hey there, DCA and Thomas. I work in tech, and am looking for a multitool, and it's proving to be a bit of a White Whale. I'm looking for something slim and lightweight, with pliers (needlenose preferred), a rounded blade (no sharp tip), a driver (phillips/flathead), a flashlight, and (hopefully) a foldout dongle that I could put a usb drive in (like the SAMSUNG FIT). I can't seem to find a multitool that either has all (or most) of my needs, or something that can be easily modified. Thanks.
Another burlap micarta knife is the Giant Mouse ACE Jutland.
Hey KC crew, are there any pros/cons to media blasted handles or is it just an aesthetic?
Thanks in advance!
Well done Thomas... "Something to lean on"... 😎
He was quick on the draw with that bit of wit.
my favorite has to be copper and burlap micarta is potato flavored
I love black linen micarta
Don't fear convexing your scandi grind, scandivex edges are amazing!
Absolutely agree, I convex all my knives that don’t come conveyed. I wish there were more folders with a convex, I’ve got opinels, the fallkniven plx I think it’s called, svord peasant knive, some brass handled Japanese folders and I just orders a knife from a company called Katsu, they have a titanium frame lock with a zip-189 layered convex blade with mirror polish for $250, I have one of their vg10 folders with a true convex and I was surprised by the quality. I’m looking at the Katsu as a cheaper alternative to a Rockstead, I wish I could afford a Rockstead but $1600 folders will have to wait till the kids are through college.
My favorite handle material is iron wood. I know all the downsides but it's gorgeous.
My favorite handle material is Ebony wood or Rose wood
Honestly, good ol' FRN w/ a decent texture meets all my needs...
I feel that for the truck survival kit another right answer could be the Cold Steel SRK in SK5. Around half the price of the price of the BK-9. Smaller (just a couple of inches) but easier to carry around when you have to use it.
id argue a cold steel master hunter in 3v (or the san mai if you want corrosion resistance) or the srk c in 3v would be better choices, mainly because 3v is tougher, has better edge retention, AND while 3v isn’t a stainless steel it is MUCH more corrosion resistant than a pure carbon steel like sk5. even the san mai knives while having less toughness (vg10 is still tough enough, especially if fallkniven uses it on their survival knives) are fully stainless and still outclass the sk5 in edge retention. if you’re on an ultra budget though the srk/ srk c in sk5 are absolutely excellent options under $50.
@@acid6urns I agree, the master hunter in 3v would be a great choice. However a part of the question that I feel DCA kinda forgot was the part where the knife would mostly be mostly sit unused AND he doesn't want it to cost a fortune. Just going with the logic of a knife that you don't mind not using after buying and keeping it as low cost as possible, my first thought was a mora, but I feel it wouldn't be good enough for a pure survival knife. That's why I think the SRK would be the optimal choice. Cheap enough to not break the bank, and ready to be abused when it's needed. Also, if it's a truck kit usually trucks are not that humid in the inside so I feel corrosion resistance while not in use is not that much of an issue. Thoughts? Also without the budget situation I would also recommend the Lionsteel T5.
I’m sure this has been answered before, but I would like to get a multitool to replace the cheap knife I keep in the center console of my car. What do you recommend that won’t break the bank?
Burlap Micarta could be (toasted) oatmeal...
The Texas state tree is the Pecan tree. So naturally, as a born and raised Texan, the pattern on brown burlap Micarta reminds me of the surface of the nut, not the shell. Pecan flavor for sure.
The knife in my collection that feels always best in my hand is my Chris Reeve Large Sabenza. Not sure why… titanium? Can’t explain it but that knife always feels good. What flavor burlap micarta? Gotta go with Root Beer!
Preview picture speaks for itself 😂 micarta is the best.
I must say there are several I really like. Like, Aluminum, Titanium, Micarta, Carbon-Fiber, American G-10, and others. But, the Material I tend to like best is American G-10. :-) Peace, Stiletto :-)
Burlap micarta flavor is definitely leather Bourbon and I'm a light weight knife guy so Im a fan of frn but my close second is titanium
Brown burlap micarta, in my mind, has to be root beer flavored.
Howdy, DCA and Thomas! I have been rewatching the KniFAQ (started with 1 and am at 160) videos for the last couple of weeks and I have noticed something, you did it in today's video (KniFAQ 175) with the Helle Gro. Almost every Mora or Scandinavian knife placed on the table is placed with the sharp edge of the blade facing to your right while all the other sharp edges are facing your left?? Curious as to why. Check the 'Beat the Icon' about the Mora to see better what I am talking about, also in 158 you set the Mora down facing your left and immediately turned it over facing your right.
Knives go on the table show-side up, and the Scandinavian brands typically put their logo or maker's mark on the side opposite most other makers. --Thomas
@@knifecenter Makes sense, thanks Thomas!
mother of pearl is my favorite, abalone second
Burlap micarta is, without a doubt, Root Beer Barrel flavor!
It is indeed burlap micarta. Though all micarta is good
Burlap micarta is hazelnut flavored.
I can confirm you pronounced Armen Arakelian's name correctly! As a fellow Armenian with a sometimes difficult to pronounce last name I am qualified to give you an A grade on pronunciation ;)
Hey dca I know you have answered this question before. Including mine about best first knife you would get a kid. My question was very specific but I'm curious. I know your a father what knife will you choose for your kid when the time comes? A mora? Possibly a buck 110? Or something else? Interested to hear what you would pick
what knife oil smells the best
Favorite handle materials:
1. Wood
2. Aluminum
3. Titanium
4. G10
5. Carbon fiber
6. Micarta
7. FRN/GRN and other plastics (ultem, zytel, etc)
8. Bone and antler
9. Stainless steel
10. Carbon fiber variations (Fat carbon, shredded carbon) - these come in last because they're almost always dead ugly, not for any functional reasons.
I like G10. It's strong, comes in any color, easily contoured, and comes with varying textures. Although G10 is now found on a lot of budget knives, I still think it's best. There are knives, many from Cold Steel, that don't even have steel liners and rely solely on the G10 for their structural integrity. You can't do that with micarta.
Burlap micarta is not my favorite material but I do have a “flavor” suggestion. Burlap micarta is definitely Milk Duds! When you squish a Milk Dud it looks just like the fibers in burlap micarta!
Cold Steel Recon is the most aggressive G10 I have ever handled. Anyone know of other knives with that type of G10?
Wood is my favorite.
Hello DCA and team, I have a tough one for you. I recently moved to the beach and I am having issues with the knives I typically carry. Every few days I have to take apart my knives to clean them because no matter what I do, fine pieces of sand find their way into the inner workings of the knife and make my fidgeting horribly unsatisfying. I need your help finding a very corrosion-resistant, sand-proof/easy-to-clean, left-hand-friendly, knife. I am a huge fan of classy and fidgety folders but I am open to anything you feel fits my needs. No particular budget but nothing too crazy. Thank you and keep up the good work.
Look at the salt series from spyderco
spyderco native 5 salt in magnacut or the spyderco pacific salt in lc200n. you can also go for the paramilitary 2 salt in magnacut, as it has a dlc coating and so quite literally will not rust (though magnacut is essentially rust proof already) and the compression lock is much less susceptible to sand and grit because of the open back construction. the pm2 is also really easy to disassemble, and while the compression lock isn’t great for lefties you can buy these button things that make actuating the lock with your left hand super easy.
Do you know any kitchen knives with scandi grind? The reason I ask is because scandi grind helps me prevent cutting my fingers when chopping parsley, for example.
Burlap micarta is like grampa's pipe tobacco flavor
chocolate, of course; dark dutch is the best!
Micarta scales all day. In all it's variations, it's the most versatile material.
Burlap Micarta is beef jerky.
For burlap micarta's taste, i'd go for coffee
DCA I have all the black pyrite and echo KC exclusives when is the large Burlap coming 🙏
Hey DCA, I eat a steak for dinner at least 3 nights a week, and as a steak guy and a knife guy, I'm a little embarrassed of my steak knives. What would you recommend for steak knives?
Hi DCA & T!!! Been a follower since day 1 and I remember when you were asking people to subscribe to reach the 100k subs, and now we are almost 500k, greatest knife channel, my question is (actually 2), 1st: my wife gave me a German kitchen knives set (Bare Knives) which is pretty good looking and also super sharp out of the box, but even though I've been looking everywhere to find out if they are full tang or not, I haven't been able to, so the question is, is it important or not to have full tang on kitchen knives?, 2nd: I bough the Pocket Tango with wood handles and I love it, but soon after I bought it I saw the exclusive edition and it was too late because my knife was already shipped, so the question is, are you planning on selling different scales to dress it up depending on the occasion? Thx in advance!!
Yiu could just put a Magnet to the kitchen knife handle to See if its full tang
@@ega6138 Thx!!
DCA we know you're a fixed blade guy (the best of us are 😉) but what is your favourite type (such as survival? Edc? Bushcraft? Utility? Etc) and what is your favourite size range?

Burlap micarta would be Frozen Hot Chocolate... and yes that is a thing lol My wife orders them all the time from the local coffee shoppe.
