I would like to ask about the water. I am getting one of this breed turtle in Finland today. And here house temperatures are often a bit colder than in other places where it is mostly summer (here summer starts after one month or so) and what u use for the water? The woman i am going to get the turtle from has kept just changing tap water (finnish tap water is one of the worlds cleanest so that does not scare me too much) in the tank weekly it does not have any filter or warmer on the water. Can you give me some tips about that?
Hi There, I too am a new turtle caretaker. I live in relatively warm FL. in US. This little turtle sized between a quarter and a 1/2 dollar was on my cement floor carport a cold morning in February 2023. In my research, must have water conditioner, calcium and minerals supplements/treatment. A special light that supply's infrared light and heat. Given your colder climb a separate heater could be necessary. A good filter pump with replacement filters. I change filters 2 X's month. A 5 ' length of 1/2" flexible plastic tube too start syphon process to change water. I just got real cuttle fish bone to clip in tank for calcium $ interest. I have a gallon tank he/she has plenty of swim area and a cave and stone area he/she can bask in lamp warmth. I have plastic plants in water for hiding. I have been feeding a balanced blend small pellets aquatic turtle food and just today received larger pellets mix with some dried shrimp, mealworms and cranberries. I am on this site and researching how to feed greens that I am introducing this week. Little thing is growing and seems bright eyed. All things I ordered from Amazon from starter turtle hatchling tank that includes filter, rocks and plastic plants. I have propped up one end of tank for better depth of water. I enjoy learning and this is a good thing do research and keep your new friend in clean conditioned water and warm. Take care..
You're feeding it too much it shouldn't have raised pyramids/triangles on its carapace/back. Over feeding can cause irreversible health problems. You have a good balanced diet for it just cut back on the quantity.
duckonquack79 I am not feeding it too much. I took this animal on 2/1/19. I haven’t had it for very long so the diet I have it on wouldn’t have an effect on its shell yet. Thank you for the comment!
I just got my yellow bellied slider, he is only about 1 1/2 inches. He hasn't eaten once in the 2 1/2 weeks ive had him. He lives in a 20 gallon, because I was expecting him to be 4-5 inches when I got him. I have turtle pellets and shrimp (not live) and he wont eat either, how do I get him to eat?
A twenty gallon is a good size for that size turtle. When it gets 4-5 inches, I recommend a forty gallon breeder or a fifty five gallon tank. Anyway, have you tried live food? You say shrimp, but I am not sure if you mean live or dried. I do not really recommend feeding dried shrimp. You could try live food like earth worms or other feeder insects. Does the enclosure have a heater? Turtles do not necessarily need a heater, but sometimes they will not eat if they are too cold. Are the enough hiding areas, and are you handling him a lot? Turtles may not eat if they are stressed from their tank or from too much handling. Does it have a proper basking area with heat and UVB lighting? Turtles may not eat if they do not have a nice basking area to get their system going. Hopefully this helps a bit.
@@DIYReptiles Thank you! I have UVB light, a heat bulb, and two caves that double as basking areas. His water tempreture is about 79-80 degrees during the day, and about 75-76 overnight. I will take him off of the dried shrimp and move to live food, like minnows or earthworms. I also have only held him twice in the past 2 1/2 weeks, once putting him into the tank, and once 6 days later, to show my 2 year old brother (my brother didn't touch him).
Sarah Birch Ok, that all sounds good. I would be careful with minnows. I recommend quarantining them before feeding them to your turtle to be sure you do not feed unhealthy fish to your turtle. Anyway thinks like earthworms, super worms, meal worms, crickets, and feeder roaches would work well. Good luck!
I am sorry for the late response, RUclips must not of notified me of this comment. I am thinking that 70% plant material would be good. Honestly, I mainly feed aquatic turtle pellets, and I supplement a bit with greens and insects. It seems that if you can get your turtles to eat lots of plants, then that would be the thing to do.
It is normal for a turtle to want to get out all of the time. I am not sure if you mean you are feeding him worms or there are just random worms in his tank. There should definitely not be random worms in his tank, and a deep clean is needed if there are.
@@mjdeguzman2479 I would definitely get a commercial turtle pellet into the mix. I recommend Zoo Med turtle diet and/or Mazouri turtle diet. Another reason he may be trying to get out of his tank all the time is the size of his tank. I have definitely noticed that turtles in larger tanks are less likely to try to get out.
Hello Leah, you are definitely going to want to get your turtle off of just meat. High protein meats are just not what turtles should be consistently eating. I do not have a lot of experience with this because all of the turtles I have rescued have had no real problem with eating pellets, but I recommend starting to feed less and less meat and more and more pellets. Basically your turtle will eventually eat pellets, but you may want to try different kinds of pellets throughout the process. I recommend ZooMed Turtle Diet and Mazuri Aquatic Turtle Diet.
i’m wondering the same thing my brother has one that looks just like a red eared slider but it has a yellow line instead of red and idk what it’s called
Your over feeding turtle. It shouldn’t have the pyramiding on its shell (the raised bumps) Their shell is supposed to be smooth. I have yellow bellied slider. That’s a sign of turtle obesity.
I am not feeding it too much. I took this animal on 2/1/19. I haven’t had it for very long so the diet I have it on has not had an effect on its shell.
DIY Reptiles I have been looking after turtles all my life. I’ve had some die from being obese with pyramiding (not my fault I got given them in that state). This is the early of pyramiding. My dad is a vet and he looked at the video and said that it looked like it
What would you feed a baby yellow belly slider? I have Zoo Med hatchling formula pellets and ReptoMin floating sticks but I feel he’s not eating.

I agree
My yellow sliders shell is like that too. That’s normal as long as it doesn’t get bad
@Tica Time I feed mine a dozen night crawlers a week. Sometimes 2 dozen. He does great. Also has fish in his tank
It's better to get single res turtle or pair?

Should I feed more plants or insects? I read 70% plants, but I want to know your opinion.

my yellow bellied baby turtle does not eat any tips but i found like small brown smelly stuff is that like poop?..
This comment does not make sense. So it is not eating, and you are worried about it defecting? What else would the stuff be?
Thanks for the info !😂
Why my turtle want to get out his tank then hes finding some worms is that really normal?😅

Thank you so much man 😻
You are welcome. I am happy to help!

Yellow Striped Turtles And Yellow Bellied Turtle The Same? Or No?
i’m wondering the same thing

Life with Abbi I am not disagreeing with you. I am just explaining that it is not my wrong doing. I was also giving this turtle in that state.
