I remember everything about this game like it was yesterday.. the music, the moves, the sound effects, the battles... I got this game with my first PC in 1996 and played it everyday after school.. it was epic!
@@robertwolfgan Not to say good but it was how I properly learned to play chess and strategizing because i was amused by the whole battles. Being a kid in the 90s when technology was rising was so damn awesome.
Love the people that are commenting that the game is too slow as if it were a design choice. Your phone would quite literally be considered an impossibly fast supercomputer back when this came out. Also, get off my lawn, kids and their damn music, etc.
They really outta make something like this for Macbook especially. I may suck at the game of chess but it's still fun to play. Not to mention, one piece capturing another in the manner is quite cool.
I'm pretty sure the sound and animation weren't meant to be unsynced by design. I don't remember the game being this slow, but then, this quite a while ago.
Did you have a BridgeBoard? The original Amiga version is better. The cartoonish graphics design worked much better. The CDTV version has a comedic multimedia tutorial that is quite nice, so that's the best version.
the error is: the program terminating abnormally couldn't open file c:\temp.set (i don't know what is it "c:\temp.set" and i don't know if is only in my computer)

Wish the pieces didn't move so slow. That's the real downfall of the game. In every version it's like this too if anyone was wondering. They always move super slow.
By running the setup program's executable in DOSBox. BTW, all I had to do to run the game was put the CD-ROM in, mount it in DOSBox and start the game directly from the CD with chess.bat. Everything worked fine, sound settings were automatically detected.
The game doesn't necessarily have one. But if it does it's probably in the same directory as the main game executable and is called something like install.exe, setup.exe or setsound.exe.
Try running the game's setup program (maybe setup.exe, setsound.exe, install.exe, ...) if it has one and choose the same settings for sound as in your DOSBox configuration (default SB16, A220, IRQ7, DMA1, HDMA5).
Move the game files to a location where you have full read/write permissions, for example your home folder (in Windows: C:\Users\YourName\). Then mount that location in DOSBox, cd to the gamefolder and start the game.
Knight slaying a night looks like a tribute to Monty Python's Holy Grail
Exactly what I was thinking.
tis but a flesh wound

You must be very good at chess then. That is such a cool childhood.
@@robertwolfgan Not to say good but it was how I properly learned to play chess and strategizing because i was amused by the whole battles. Being a kid in the 90s when technology was rising was so damn awesome.
I remember the Queen's walk to this very day
The animations for them turning around were pretty fluid
I remember playing this when i was a kid, great game. This and tunnel blaster.

I just like how the Knight vs. Knight is based on Monty Python's Black Knight gag from "Holy Grail"
And probably one of reasons why was MP`s Black Knight immortalized.
7:03 the Indiana Jones scene xD
Never seen this before! I love the rook eating the spearmen and the large weapon arsenal of the king
One of the first computer games I remember playing. I wish iPad had this
They really outta make something like this for Macbook especially. I may suck at the game of chess but it's still fun to play. Not to mention, one piece capturing another in the manner is quite cool.
That King is a total badass.
And the hilarious voices and grunts.
A game from my childhood. :3
I taught myself to play chess when I was 5 playing this game.
Dammit man I envy you so much
5:30 Someone, somewhere, is enjoying this animation way too much.
Truly, what is up with that fetish.
**raises hand awkwardly in shame**
Sweet Jesus, I can imagine those animations getting real old, real fast.
this, samurai showdown. and deathkeep were the 3 best games for 3do
this was impossible to me to run in dosbox, when I finally reached cdchess.exe it kept saying that the cdrom was not found
@emper999 Battle Chess Compilation was released only for DOS. I bought the CD somewhere a few years ago.
I used DOSBox-0.74 with the default settings, didn't even install the game just played it directly from the CD.
You sir are a scholar and a gentleman.
Yhi khel kr bde hue hai nostalgia
King killing Bishop was my personal favorite
its pretty clealy inspired by the scene in indiana jones where he shoots a guy with a big sword :D
I'm pretty sure the sound and animation weren't meant to be unsynced by design. I don't remember the game being this slow, but then, this quite a while ago.
@coltsbro84 Well, there is DOSPad, DOSBox for iPad/iPhone.
@prototypep4 The animations in this game are slow by design. DOS is capable of running games in high resolutions and speed.
Lol, the mighty python reference when a knight fights a knight
@coltsbro84 a remake is supposed to be coming out for PC early 2012 and for iOS later this year. Check out Subdued Software, they're developing it.
I remember emulating this game on my Amiga 4000...
Did you have a BridgeBoard? The original Amiga version is better. The cartoonish graphics design worked much better. The CDTV version has a comedic multimedia tutorial that is quite nice, so that's the best version.
I remember playing this, but I don't remember the King having a pistol...
I remember all those music cues.
How can I close from DOS Box? I'm stuck in battle chess
Ctrl+F9 quits DOSBox.
Or do you mean how to exit the game? The right mouse button opens up the game menu.
@@zirkoni42 oh thx
@Makron5 This was running on DOS software... every game except doom really was pretty slow.
For DOS? Wow, I had to get the Panasonic 3DO emulator and the game iso was hard to find.
I tried that but that pack doesn't have the enhanced CD Rom version, just the original version
this game was spectacular until now
rooks are golems in disguise
@zirkoni88 It was from a folder but I've deleted it since and can't find a site to download it on.
My battle chess don't have sound and animation how can I fix it ?
AHIM YUIRA No animation? Are you sure it's even the same game? Because that sounds really weird.
Absolutely same game
Gotta love the pop culture references.
Fuckin' ear rape, missed this game on my father's computer ;_;
@rafael0a0t You can buy Battle Chess Special Edition from Good Old Games (GOG).
How did you get the sound and the animations to work I have the CDROM but it just crashes when the pieces getting ready to fight?
i can't start the game in my dosbox 0.74 it only give me error
What kind of error?
then PS1 came with the legend of Dragoon. so I sold the 3DO
There was an enhanced CD Rom Version? 😮😮😮
hey..where's the walking sound?? queen is supposed to have the loudest tapping from her heels!
7:00 reminded me of a scene from raiders of the lost ark.
The music sound very much like the one composed for Heroes of Might n Magic 2! Is it the same composer?
I'd love to play this game. I couldn't figure out how to get the dang thing to work with DOSBox. I have no idea how to run it.
@tacoswamper CD? floppy? folder? something else?
You can even drag'n'drop folders&files on DOSBox icon. It's so simple even a 3-year-old could do it.
the error is:
the program terminating abnormally
couldn't open file c:\temp.set
(i don't know what is it "c:\temp.set" and i don't know if is only in my computer)
Sounds like it can't write the file "temp.set".
Check that the directory isn't write protected.
Wow, this game it a bit too slow, but it's fkn hilarious!
7:15 LOL
how make for download ? and i don't' know a site!
Best version was on the Amiga
The original Amiga version is better. The cartoonish graphics design worked much better. The CDTV version has a comedic multimedia tutorial that is quite nice, so that's the best version.
Wish the pieces didn't move so slow. That's the real downfall of the game. In every version it's like this too if anyone was wondering. They always move super slow.
There are some legal issues with the enhanced version so it's not sold anywhere. I guess your only options are finding a used copy or piracy.
so how i enter the setup program
By running the setup program's executable in DOSBox.
BTW, all I had to do to run the game was put the CD-ROM in, mount it in DOSBox and start the game directly from the CD with chess.bat. Everything worked fine, sound settings were automatically detected.
where is the setup program?
The game doesn't necessarily have one.

King fucking shoots the bishop at 7:15
@CoreyD1086 It's sold on GOG.com
7:15
king: screw this *pulls out gun*
bishop: wait what are you
*king shoots him 5 times*
king: next time don't screw with royality
You gotta show me that trick I'm stuck.
i member used to old games where free and now u have to buy old games. atleast they are cheapish
This is a cool game, but so SLOW
LOL! how is this violent for a six year old? you had pretty strict parents.
the game freeze in fight (but the mouse still move and menu still appear
Try running the game's setup program (maybe setup.exe, setsound.exe, install.exe, ...) if it has one and choose the same settings for sound as in your DOSBox configuration (default SB16, A220, IRQ7, DMA1, HDMA5).
OH SHIT
the is packing
Not true...
Selfmade?
so what i must do
Move the game files to a location where you have full read/write permissions, for example your home folder (in Windows: C:\Users\YourName\).
Then mount that location in DOSBox, cd to the gamefolder and start the game.
The animations are too slow.
q lento esta pero padrisimo
