This was the first game I ever played. My mom would sit me on her lap and let me play it when I was a kid. I have been trying to find this for years and years. I cannot explain the rush of nostalgia I'm feeling right now.
I personally buy very few physical copies of games nowadays, and those are mostly bigger ones such as Bioshock Infinite and Titanfall ( which wold take me hours to download ).
after seeing the latest E3 Doom remake preview, I had to relive this classic...I just had a flashback of playing this nonstop on my 120mhz pentium 1...this PC had a turbo button for some reason, and if I pressed it to 'OFF' heretic would lag like crazy
Brotmeister nice...yeah my PC was worthless without that turbo button, even playing heretic...now in 2015, my quad core cell phone is considered old...what a trip
+kuruptzZz my first PC was a 286 and it too had a turbo button that increased the speed from 8MHz to I think 10MHz or 12MHz. Back then my buddies and me were joking about 500MHz PCs but who knew that even a cellphone today would be 1GHz and more!
I did not know Heretic when I was younger, I was only 2 years old when it came out. But one day I stumbeled across this video here on youtube and immidiately fell in love with this game. i thought it was very brutal and the most epic game ever made. i still remember the moment he picks up the gauntlets, the sound of the evil laughter and the gory killing of the golem. Yes, this was the game made for me! ever since, I can't stop playing Heretic and Hexen, those are jsut the greatest games ever.
I remember as a 5 year old playing this game. I loved it and played it for a good year until I started getting nightmares from it. Now I just remember about it and I watch this game play at the age of 16... I cant believe I played this as a kid! XD
When i was a kid . i had a CD with the first 10 FPS games for PC , i couldn't Save game cause the save file was on the CD , so i've beaten Doom , Heretic ,Rise of the triad with NO SAVE GAME ! and this is how i became the Legendary gamer i am today !
Great game, had it working across a network in college back in the 90's (pre internet gaming) and it was fantastic especially when the whole class was playing, thanx for the upload
my friend showed me his computer back in 94 or so that was loaded with this, wc1, doom ect. safe to say video games took on a whole new meaning. wc2, wc3, cs, wow. always was playing something. before pc snes was god, 64 had some games, same with xbox.. but damn.. if I didn't hang out with this kid as an 8 yr old it'd be all different. crazy.
I was so obsessed with this game. I need to find another copy (mine long ago died) to get back to my gaming roots. I'm going to geek out and make my husband watch this with me.
You mean the Maulotaurs, right? Did you mean those that were bosses in "The Portals of Chaos" and "Field of Judgement," and sometimes as normal enemies in between those maps?
Played this game a lot when I was a kid. Didn't have the full game, just this first chapter. Sometimes with my brother or a friend we'd share the keyboard, with one doing the moving and one doing the shooting.
Incredible game. One of he best FPS I've ever played (also Hexen). I lost count how many times I finished. I played in a DX-2 66 MHz with 4 MB Ram and an Adlib soundcard, 1995.
Lol those times came back my teacher asked me once what do you do in your free time i soccer i draw and i do games on my computer :P teacher: which games do you play? i play games whit red birds (those red birds werent birds but where red devils XDXDXD i was only 5 years old!
Ah yes, heretic. I played this game back when I was really little. I had a windows98 at the time. I was around 5 years old when I played this game, along with Doom 1, and Doom 2. Plus blakestone and wolfenstein 3d. Ah good memories. Im playing Heretic right now actually. I think I played it in 2002 or 2001. Ya, I was really young.
This is actually MIDI music. DOS and different versions of Windows all use different sounds for instruments (with Windows generally being higher-quality). In this case, DOSBox was used to play the game, so DOS's instrument set is being used in the MIDI playback.
I was a christian- young Adult when this come out. It gave me bad dreams, bad thoughts, and had a demonic side to it. I laugh today as I become an Atheist- but that was what attracted me to ID games. I thought it was wrong to play, so it made me want to ! I heard pastors even teach 'ID Games are devil spirited'.
I used to scare when i played that game alone :), you remind me about my childhood and the good times ,, one of the first 3d games in that world .. first time i played it it was 1995
I think remakes are a great idea but. I don't think the changes they make to them are good. I loved this game, so good in so many levels ! I'm sick of the repetitive aspect of FPS games today. Its the same thing over and over. Run through the woods, get on a four wheeler go to the snow kill the guard tower get on the helicopter. Also games today have the same creatures involving spiders and demons. This game had amazing weapons, awesome creatures/monster. Great map I'd love to see it remade...
Loved this game! I hope by 2040, when I'm an old man...I will revisit this video again. I just wonder how many views it will get...It would be so awesome if it reached 3,000,000
Since some of you are talking about having played this game as a kid, I'll tell you this: I played this game as a kid, including both the keyboard and the mouse. At first, I played this game with "No Monsters" because monsters were too scary; however, "No Monsters" didn't make the explosive fungus balls exploding, crushing ceilings, or damaging floors (e.g. slime, lava, or fire) any safer, and on top of that, certain boss levels could not be completed, even with the "Kitty" cheat. Only E1M8, "Hell's Maw" could be cheated that easily. As for E2M8 "The Portals of Chaos" and those on the extension boss levels (those being "Shattered Bridge" and "Field of Judgement") could not be completed, period. So eventually, I played *with* monsters; however, because I wasn't competent enough to defeat them without damage, I used the "Quicken" cheat. Also, I used the "Rambo" cheat, as it gave full Ammo and Weapons. I especially loved any episodes with water, like "The Docks" shown here, because I loved how the water was created and animated, and splashing in it. Then there was the matter of the Firemace, even in episodes and maps one would never actually find them, for it, because of how it would look if the mace spheres were shot into it... and to any damaging floor... with or without the Tome of Power. But because I used God Mode, I never understood the purpose of the Mystic Urn then. Now I do: it's for restoration to full health. Once again, this game is a childhood classic to me, like it is to some of you commenting on this video.
I was so young back then. I didn't know what I was doing in this game. But I do know that with such games I had more fun playing it half an hour instead of today playing GTA 4 for 2 hours.
you're right, it was from a couple of years later. but it had the same feel from those days, and although not as good as quake 1, it did have some very good moments. and multiplayer is great, in fact I still venture in to the servers from time to time and you'd be surprised that theres still ppl playing it!
Eu tinha 15 anos quando zerei esse jogo, na casa das minhas primas. No final vc escreve o nome no hall da fama com letras de fogo! É muito top, cara. 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
This was the first game I ever played. My mom would sit me on her lap and let me play it when I was a kid. I have been trying to find this for years and years. I cannot explain the rush of nostalgia I'm feeling right now.
played it in my win 95 pc
I'm in the same boat! My step dad and I used to play. I really need to get it again!
@Stefano Pavone These are freeware and open source nowadays ;)
I remember sitting on the floor and watching my dad play this game.
You just made me so happy. I found the game my dad loved so much.
LOL same
This was a bit scary game as a kid. And Wolfenstein 3D, too :D Oh, those were the days!
Same haha! It was at the end of the 90s.
Am I the only one who likes this better than Doom?
Nope, you aren't. This is advancement released after Doom - thus meant to be liked more!
i seriously thought this game was very scary
+thosegreengentlemen
It was to me when I was 4. :P
+thosegreengentlemen You're not alone.
I was possessed by this game, but I'm right.
WAS very scary?
I still do
Ahhhhh, the music! the sound effects! the nostalgia!!
I just can't hold it!!!
This is darker and scarier than DOOM.
almost 20 yeags went by and i still rembmber first time i got this game on a disk
they should make a heretic 2014 like they did with wolfenstein and how they do it on DOOM
I personally buy very few physical copies of games nowadays, and those are mostly bigger ones such as Bioshock Infinite and Titanfall ( which wold take me hours to download ).
Great atmospheric game! I still play this game sometimes on notebook!
This game scared me when I was a child
Yeah..scary as shit.
I mean, when i was a child.
Even though this was a childhood classic to me, to be fair on that, it's not really meant for kids.
after seeing the latest E3 Doom remake preview, I had to relive this classic...I just had a flashback of playing this nonstop on my 120mhz pentium 1...this PC had a turbo button for some reason, and if I pressed it to 'OFF' heretic would lag like crazy

I remember as a 5 year old playing this game. I loved it and played it for a good year until I started getting nightmares from it. Now I just remember about it and I watch this game play at the age of 16... I cant believe I played this as a kid! XD

Mad props to you, man.
This game, and Rampage, ahhhh how nice to live during that era..I enjoyed my childhood.. ;)
This game had some amazing music. Tons of atmosphere too.
The level design is so good that I still remember entire maps up to level 4 just by looking the video, just awesome.
This game was creepy as hell.
Great game, had it working across a network in college back in the 90's (pre internet gaming) and it was fantastic especially when the whole class was playing, thanx for the upload
This game was bad ass when i was little
I loved this game.
I remember playing it when i was a teenager.
used to be so damn afraid playing this game as a kid, i still have it somewhere and love this game and its story till today.
i remember playing this when I was like 6. Great game!
i used to play this when i was like 2-7 years old! was my fav game of all time.
my friend showed me his computer back in 94 or so that was loaded with this, wc1, doom ect. safe to say video games took on a whole new meaning. wc2, wc3, cs, wow. always was playing something. before pc snes was god, 64 had some games, same with xbox.. but damn.. if I didn't hang out with this kid as an 8 yr old it'd be all different. crazy.
Ah, memories! I love the little cackling noise when you find the gauntlets :)
I was so obsessed with this game. I need to find another copy (mine long ago died) to get back to my gaming roots. I'm going to geek out and make my husband watch this with me.
Was this a *childhood* classic for you, like it is for most of us? Were you a kid when you first played it?
I think I will cry .....back in time to 1996.. the sound, the music, the graphics, pfff my powerful 133 hmz processor 32 mb RAM, Great memories
I used to love this game in middle school. Well I still love it. It came with the new computer I had in '98.

This brings back a lot of memories, thanks =)
I was pooping my pants every time I saw one of those "bulls" in later levels
I just now pooped my pants, so don't feel bad.
You mean the Maulotaurs, right? Did you mean those that were bosses in "The Portals of Chaos" and "Field of Judgement," and sometimes as normal enemies in between those maps?
@@KBAFourthtime yes! hahaha
the 13 people that dislike this video had a tick in their hair and misspelled looking for a video
I find myself playing more of the older games than the newer ones, it's nice to know the grandparents of today's games.
Wooo that first level music just made a good game even better!
Played this game a lot when I was a kid. Didn't have the full game, just this first chapter. Sometimes with my brother or a friend we'd share the keyboard, with one doing the moving and one doing the shooting.
You mean just the first episode "City of the Damned" as a whole, or just its first map, "The Docks"?
Ah good memories :-) Thanks for posting! This was my favorite game next to Lands of Lore :-)
Incredible game. One of he best FPS I've ever played (also Hexen). I lost count how many times I finished. I played in a DX-2 66 MHz with 4 MB Ram and an Adlib soundcard, 1995.

Shoot the red birds! They can spit fire... wait what
@@TDRR_Gamez Those "red birds" are called gargoyles... and they don't start "spitting" (well, throwing, actually) fire until Map 3, "The Gatehouse."
@@KBAFourthtime dumb comment from 7 years ago. I'm not sure I had even played Heretic at that point.
