My grandfather fought for the U.S. Army in the war. He told me a story of his where he was in a bunker with his squad and a grenade came into the bunker and he was the closest to the exit and he got out of the bunker and was the only one to get out just in time seeing his friends all get blown apart and killed behind him. Though he did suffer an injury to his leg that was non-life threatening. He then afterwards got surrounded by North Koreans and had to go back and hide in the same bunker throwing his friends dead body over his and getting there blood on him so he looked dead too. He said he laid there in the bunker and pretended to be dead with his dead friends bodies on him for two days until the North Koreans were pushed back and he was later found by Americans and saved. He then suffered an infection in his foot and had a toe cut off. He then continued to fight with his toe cut off and what he just saw. My grandfather just past away February 9th 2021 peacefully at 91 years old. He was the hardest working man I’ve known and a great grandfather and I wished I would have sat down and learned more from him when I had the chance as he probably had many other stories to tell me.
My Grandpa was in the Air Force during the Korean War. He served as a radioman in Korea. He later served in Vietnam but back in the states. He retired as Tech Sergeant. He sadly passed away in 2020.

My granpa was 18 years old when the Korean war broke out. He ran away from home in North Korea to avoid getting recruited, but he was captured by the South Korean army and became a combat engineer. He said the images of bodies burnt by a flamethrower still haunts him. Poor old man passed away 4 years ago.
I'm sorry for your loss. My Grandpa, rest in peace, was also psychologically scarred for life by that war. Hopefully the war and DMZ will soon be relics of the past.

Syngman Rhee's demonstration that he would go north alone hindered the cease-fire with his independent release. The Korea-U.S. Mutual Defense Treaty and the terms of the South Korean military build-up. At that time, Rhee Syngman's judgment was that the Korea-Japan forced merger and the division of the Korean Peninsula were distrusted in the mind that the U.S. could no longer trust the U.S. due to the betrayal of the U.S. The U.S. raised Rhee Syngman. The U.S. also prepared the so-called Everready Plan and appeasement plan to eliminate Rhee Syngman.
Grandpa survived the battle of the chosin reservoir. Was part of a group named the chosin few. Dog company. Edit: just remembered a really sweet story. My grandmother's father was killed in action. She told me that she still remembers the time when her father left home in the morning wearing a military uniform, saying he would be back soon. Both my grandfathers fought in this war and my grandmother's brother was killed in this war! We would go to his grave stone and my grandmother would cry even though his body wasn't there! They never recovered his body!
My grandfather was also in the war with the Turkish Brigade. He did return to Turkey but when I try to find out more about him, there isn't anything in the archives. Almost like he doesn't exist. I wonder how many more were disrespected like this.
And my great-grandfather was a Filipino Troop in the Battle Of Yultong. He was really fearless despite the fact the Chinese and N.Koreans Troops outnumbered them. They pushed them back really hard.
Round One I’m Chinese and I’m not being disrespectful... The Chinese fought the battle because the us would supposedly invade China from Korea. Although it’s not true, they were defending their country. I wonder did the us veterans ever think about what they are fighting for. A different ideology on the other side of earth? Is it deserve to die for it?

My grandfather fought in this war! He died long before I was born but I always wish he were alive so I can ask him about his time. I know he was among the men who captured Pyongyang.
Awesome video as always! My great grandpa fought with the 65th infantry regiment (us army). He was shot in the head, and survived. He passed away of cancer in the 2000's. One of the bravest, and most amazing people in my whole family. RIP papa Campos.
The 65th Infantry Regiment was made up of native Puertoricans, my Great Grandfather was also one of them. His name was Lt. Benjamin Ramos. He survived being blown away from a grenade (and falling down a cliff in the process) when he and his unit where patrolling. He was the sole survivor between him and 5 other guys that got blown away. He later was wounded in combat, when fighting Chinese forces. And soon after he was sent back to the U.S in Kentucky., later surviving an airplane crash where the aircraft broke in half on landing. He broke his leg in the process but survived all those things, and he lived until 2011. @Simple History, I'd be an honor for us Puertorican viewers if you could make a video of the 65th Infantry Regiment, as they showed what the people of my little country can attribute to the USA.
Through this video, it was an opportunity to look back on the Korean War, the heartbreaking history of our country. My grandfather fought for the Colombian army. He was really young when he joined and decided going to the war, (he was just 21), and he used to tell me how hard that was. There were kinda a few Colombian soldiers (5.000), and in that year, Colombia was not really well-armed or prepared to be on a really serious thing. The "weird" (or what most called my attention), is that despite Colombian soldiers did their best in there they've got a low recognition, and veterans ain't so remembered. Anyway, my grandpa was part of an artillery batallion, and he got captured in an ambush, wich he was captured and taken as a war prisoner, but, (by a reason i still don't know) he was fastly released. He knew english, so he was able to speak to other people, and he told me that Colombians were called "Demons" by the north koreans, because they died on their grounds, and never falled back, despite of being attacked or being out of supplies, and most of them died holding their grounds and fighting until the last moment they could.
Gracias por contar la historia de tu abuelo. Siempre he escuchado que hubo soldados colombianos en la guerra de Corea, pero no sabia nada más de ellos.
@tu tu Sure, other countries sent a token force to help. But calling it a "UN Force" is a bit disingenuous when 90% of this force was American, with the vast majority of it funded by America.
Actually what North Koreans made easier to attack South Korea is because the USA prohibited South Korean army from organizing their troops. In that period, American government thought Syngman Rhee is a warmonger and didn't let him stationing land forces alongside the 38 parallel. Which led South Korea extremely vulnerable to foreign invasion. I personally appreciate how USA and UN secured our homeland, gave aid for rebuilding our economy, but it is true that their misjudgment weakened our self defensiveness, 'unintentionally' helping North Korea.
rhee was a warmonger and terrible dictator. his behavior was no better than anything the north did at the time, in fact it was worse, and communists enjoyed good support even in the south
even if south korea had organisation, they lacked heavy weaponry. north korea had far more artillery and medium tanks because the soviet gave them a lot of SU76 (initially a tank hunter i know, but it can be used as artillery with HE-FRAG shells and pointing the gun upward) and T34 85 , while south koreans had only few chaffee and M4 easy 8 . and previous war prooved than when your army lacks heavy weaponry, you cannot stop your ennemy

There were kinda a few Colombian soldiers (5.000), and in that year, Colombia was not really well-armed or prepared to be on a really serious thing.

My grandfather was born in Germany but was able to escape to America as a youth before WW2. He later enlisted in the US army when he was old enough and fought in the Korean war. He died many years ago. He never spoke about the war but I think he was very motivated to enlist because he understood the dangers tyranny.
Your grandfather? You must be in your 40s or 50s because I’m 34 and my great grandfather was in his late teens in WW2
And he saw what the US did to North Korean villagers and thats why he never spoke about the war.

The war was very miserable. Too many people died. We still want unification.
Even China is not unified, despite that China' mainland is way larger and Chinese military power is stronger than Taiwan's.North and South Korea might still be in this tie situation for many decades without any changes.
I don't think that China nor the U.S. would allow re-unification
If North Korea integrates into the South's rule; China would intervene and if it's the other way around; America and Japan would step in

Please explain why South Korea wants unification?
Wouldn't it be better just to accept the North as a different independant country and let them open up their borders and economy to the South.
Perhaps the demans for unification makes them think that they will loose their country?
And that makes them scared?
As Korean I don't want unification at all, unless North throw away the communism 😐
