I wasn’t interested at first, but i really like Katseye. The girls are really charismatic and talented so its a joy watching them perform. their asian promotion in Korea is doing really well in terms of garnering new fans. Only time will tell if they can hit it BIG big though
Well Mei is debuting in a group called SayMyName and the group is highly anticipated as one ex Iz*One member is joining the group and her name Is Hitomi and the group might be as big as Le Sserafim and Ive who are popular as those groups has 2 members from Iz*One
@@hallooos7585 i love your positivity and i hope say my name does well, but they very likely won't be that popular. they're from a nugu company and the post-iz*one craze is over. Lee ChaeYeon was already late at capitalizing from it and she even has the added bonus of having an equally famous sibling, her numbers are still low unfortunately.
as someone who was tuned in since the beginning of dream academy and now is a fan of katseye, i wouldn't change who is in the group. but the way they screwed so many of these girls over with no offer to continue training or offering them resources to figure out their life after leaving is actually sooo unethical to me
Lexie was my fav trainee from dream academy (before the final lineup was announced) and I was so sad that she left, they said in the statement that’s she’d rather be producer than a recording artist, but now since the documentary aired and I found out the real reason why she left I was sad, they all deserve so much better
@junipairo essentially, Lexie really didn't like how they were doing eliminations (based on fan votes where social media played a huge part, plus it being announced by a robot voice and not ppl - to make drama out of the poor girls). Also, I *assume* she was already upset that they repeatedly lied to the girls about it not being a survival show.
omg i got chills when you said it could be because our phones are constantly portrait and it's only fitting one person. i'm in both worlds, kpop and other artists, and wow i didn't realise the british ggs and other ggs outside of kpop are scarce. stream katseye
Blaque, TLC, Girlicious, School Gyrls, Cheetah Girls, 702, Dream, Danity Kane.... So many amazing underappreciated girl groups, yet The Spice Girls and The Pussycat Dolls are some of THE MOST FAMOUS girl groups ON EARTH.
the individual member branding is so important, at least in the western market. and honestly it's best if it's kind of obvious from the start. the spice girls were onto something the scary/baby/posh/ginger/sporty branding. i think that's part of why blackpink are so popular in the west too. they have very clear intended individual brandings that show through in their mvs and performance outfits and literally everything else too. like the branding is very reductive but also effective because it makes you as an audience member feel like they're a group of different girls or women who came together to make this group edit: also with katseye specifically i think it was a HUGE mistake to put their "psychiatrist" sessions in the documentary. there's supposed to be confidentiality with a mental health professional. i wouldn't be surprised if those girls thought all their comments about each other were going to be private between them and the psychiatrist. it's normal to get frustrated or pissed at other people, especially in such a high pressure environment, and talking to a mental health professional is literally one of the healthiest things you can do about it.
THANK YOU FOR MENTIONING THE THERAPY SESSIONS BEING RECORDED. How can they claim to care about their mental health while broadcasting private conversations to thousands of people. I hate that it was recorded at all
@@Molly-iw1rc I think it would've been much better if they had a camera there for the session just so audiences knew that there was mental health professionals there, but they should not have included any mic in the session and made the girls aware of that.
@@ishathakor I think they're tryna do that sort of thing with KATSEYE rather than melting all the girls together in the same vibe and look. Lara's a limitless key 🗝️ and her colour is green 💚, Manon is a stellar tiara 👑 and her colour is yellow 💛, Yoonchae is a soothing shell 🐚 and her colour is pink 🩷 etc. they also have some sort of vintage doll lore going on which I hope to see more of. Honestly it would be cool to have CGI of their dolls and a transition to the actual girls in an MV one day just to tie in with the lore. They're onto something with the whole vintage witchy yet kinda Bratz doll vibe. Also the dream charms. It's different.
Also, speaking of the slow burn fame you mentioned instead of instant success. The major reason why BTS could blow up in the west is because they grinded and took the time to cultivate a dedicated fandom invested in their success after seeing their underdog story. And it paid off in spades, i mean, BTS’s success transformed their bankrupt agency into one of South Korea’s billion dollar conglomerate. A unicorn.
Yes but it’s also mainly luck. What BTS did isn’t unique at all. All Kpop groups are grinding and putting in focus to their fanbase. They had a unique situation where they were surviving more on an international fanbase before that was sustainable in Kpop. In 2nd gen and early 3rd gen it didn’t matter if you had a lot of western fans you needed to be popular in Korea. Nowadays in 4th Gen. You can survive with being a nobody in Korea but having western fans. BTS had that international fanbase and hung on long enough or were lucky enough to be around when this shifted and you could get recognition fr having a western audience. So this kept them afloat enough until they did get big in Korea so once they had Korea plus their original international audience they were set But mainly it was luck. Other groups who had more international fans either came from companies that couldn’t keep them afloat until this switch to the west happened or had bad companies like BAP or just never gained fame in Korea to help them blow up. BTS is an underdog story but they didn’t do anything else people weren’t already doing. They just got lucky and were in the right time in the right place when the industry was undergoing a shift towards international audiences having more of an influence
@@yukijames1321 it still makes them a unicorn though😂 because who is ever that lucky to come from a group that was about to disband to becoming the biggest and most successful K-pop act in the world. so you did nothing but prove their point. there was obviously SOMETHING unique about them to be able to maintain that fame as well. Not to mention luck is mainly a huge factor with ALL groups when it comes to success in K-pop. They say this over and over again in the industry. You just sound bothered. The amount of times you repeated "it’s just luck" in that one essay you posted.😂
@@tyunieism I think they can heavily profit off nostalgia by taking inspiration from girl groups in the 90s or 2000s. Millennials might eat that up... And gen z peeps find older/Y2K stuff refreshing and cool so it might help them stand out to that specific western audience. I know they have a magical doll kind of lore with dream charms to make them individualistic, I'm pretty sure the west likes dolly vibes. Just ideas!
I think there is such a rise in authenticity that now groups seem to general and to many people to get to know whereas in kpop fans are coming into a new culture and this is apart of it and since images are so tight it’s easier to get to know them and their training makes up for the lost authenticity along with the strict cultural ‘rules’
What pmo was when Mitra said the audience wanted drama which was NOT TRUE at all. I was there since they first introduced dream academy and everyone was hoping it would be friendly survival show without any tension/drama😭 A lot of people were hoping it would be like the A2K survival show (JYPE’s global girl group survival show) where it was focused on the girls helping each other, no drama, and they even had the option/chance to which ALL 11 of them could debut without any eliminations. Speaking of A2K I really want to hear your thoughts on it! It’s also about a global girl group (though all the girls are from America but diverse in ethnicity) that is under a kpop company + western company thats went through kpop training in some way.
That's why a2k flop. There's no drama enough for ppl to be interested 😭😭😭 plus jyp gave them the most mid corny ahh song ever, with the concept of young girl next door vibe. Way to flop tbh💀💀💀
I would say Mitra is right, unfortunately. That episode had the highest rating and views. Plus, a lot of pal's main complaint with A2k is that it was too boring and cookie cutter. Hate Mitra or not, katseye gained a LOT of new non kpop fans through the documentary, which I doubt woulda happened if it was just cookie cutter like A2k was.
Got the chills going through the history of girl groups I love seeing all my fav icons getting their flowers for their big involvement in making what girl groups are today
Updates on other contestants: Mei: will debut with the group SayMyName alongside Honda Hitomi from Iz*one and a 2010 liner from the survival show My teenage girl. Nayeon: participated in a survivial show 'girls on fire' and placed first. They'll soon debut as a 5 member group - all memebers are main vocalists. Adela: dropped her solo on friday, promotes it a lot on social media.
I just discovered this show two days ago and watched it all as fast as I could, and WOW… it was a lot. I came across your video in my search to find anyone talking about it once I’d finished the show, and I love your commentary on all of this!! Thank you for this amazing video ⭐️ The Hybe x Geffen execs all need to publicly apologize to the participants and the viewers! They were inconsistent and unprofessional, in my opinion.
I think the girls in the 'Wanna' be group could not have performed 'Buttons'. It would have looked pervy as they looked so very very young, however they should have started a second group with the 4 of them for a younger demographic maybe? Mind you, the ones who were left should also have developed themselves as a group too lol I loved Nayoung, wish her all the very best
here are some upcoming western girl groups: FLO, Citizen Queen, Bella Dose, Psiryn, Say Now, The Shindellas, LA’DY, Secrets of Sound, VCHA, Mako Girls, ICONIXX, SZNS, Crimson Apple
the way the katseye fandom is already so controversial because of the documentary and people posting clips on tiktok :/ like ya'll the real villain is MITRAAA !! ... also my biases are megan and sophia
survival shows are brutal in kpop i'm so used to them that popstar academy is nothing shocking to me 🤣the only difference that the girls are very open and outspoken compared to sk shows
DR Music pioneered the global Kpop girl group with Blackswan: Fatou (Senegalese-Belgian); NVee (US); Gabi (Brazilian-German) and Sriya (India). But big labels want to call their groups first and erase what smaller companies have already achieved.
Katseye is not a global kpop group though, they just had kpop style training … they’re a global pop group. This project is completely unique in that it was created in collaboration with a huge western label. Also their music is not in Korean it’s in English. please let’s turn on our brains!
i wouldn't call them global kpop group tbh. they're a k-pop group with different races. esp when u look at black swans swans history (originally bp rania, an all korean group with one token black girl who was pushed out anyway) i feel like the distinction is in the approach, marketing, and music. xg is more global imo despite being less diverse simply for attempting to sing in a global language and promote in more than just country of origin (japan) as well as the genre and collaborating being all over
@@mayuhmetalthis doesn't really make sense.... What is "global" language??? Also Blackswan is a kpop group BECAUSE they make songs with Korean lyrics. KATSEYE sings ENTIRELY in English. They are an American girl group. The identity of a group of artist is defined by the music they create. That's their sole purpose, to sing and perform their own songs.
I really loved the British girl group ‘RLY’ who was formed on xfactor the band in 2019 but they only started releasing music last year because of Covid and label issues which made them lose the hype due to the long wait which made them disband this year after releasing their last single ‘Restroom Booth Confessions’. It’s such a shame because they were so talented, wrote their own music and were relatable too.
Tbf, most trainees dont know if they will debut by being picked by staff or through survival shows. Hybe had 3 survival shows prior to dream academy. Iland, which created enhypen. Heeseung, Jay and Sunghoon were trainees for about 2-3 years and they were not training to participate in the show. Same with Illit Yunah, did she train for 5 years to participate in Runext? No. Thats just how it is
I just randomly stumbled upon a video of Katseye’s performance, my eyes were instantly drawn to Manon. (Also Lara) that was before I knew any of them let along there was a Netflix documentary. So yeah I’d say she definitely has the star quality and attitude. Haters gonna hate, so don’t listen to them
So was Lara tho. And frankly trainees get brought in from special circumstances and dropped all the time. SM, hybe, & YG are known for giving sneak peeks at trainees, exciting fans, yet they end up not making it. If she really sucked and couldn’t keep up she wouldn’t be in katseye.
as a K-pop fan, imo the best 'starter' survival shows for girl groups have to be Sixteen and Produce 101 (particularly the 1st and 3rd seasons, where they created girl groups out of the contestants). Sixteen is kind of similar to Popstar Academy in which all the girls train under the same label, while Produce 101 had trainees from various labels compete for placement on short-term girl group launched by the TV network. And yes, obviously Popstar Academy is ((friendlier)) than those two shows. Trainee life is way tougher in Korea!
I watched the documentary before watching Dream Academy. From the first episode I realised how often Ezrela was interviewed and mentioned - I ADORED her and found her so likeable. With the editing I was thinking all along she must be in the group! I was heartbroken when she got to the finale but wasn't chosen. I love Katseye and the members that were chosen, but I follow Ezrela on everything now and if / when she goes into the spotlight I will defo be number one fan XD.
As the last western gg that blew up, the thing about Little Mix’s debut single is that they took their popularity by winning the X-Factor good and released a pop song that every people (specially girls) could relate to and the Little Mix girls has been consistent thru it over the years. Also adds that the girls had a good chemistry with each other having different strengths that made the group strong with their great vocals, great music and amazing standout performances. Even though their career wasn’t always been stable and they also experienced a lot of shits inside the industry, they became strong and took it as their motivation to do better and now these new groups are looking up to them making them one of the standard of being a great girl group.
I’ll never understand why they didn’t break the USA. They didn’t even have one top 40 song in the USA. And they definitely had a couple of songs that could’ve been popular here… I don’t know it’s weird… Like people knew them… Especially younger people like during the One Direction days knew because Zayne was dating one girl so then ppl got into the group… but even at that time, if you just stopped and asked random people on the street if they knew who little mix was most wouldn’t have even have ever heard of them.. It’s a shame they really were so talented and I know they were like huge in the UK at times… I don’t mean it’s a shame about the USA specifically haha lol I just mean that they didn’t become more popular globally. Edited for typo**
@@speeeee35they didn’t break the USA but they were supposed to do so in 2013/2014 with a Salute Tour leg planned in the USA. They were however forced to cancel it because they were working on their third album, which they scrapped completely because they didn’t think it was good enough. If they didn’t start on making a new album (which eventually became get weird) they were scared they would get dropped by the label. If they had toured the USA, and also promoted themselves there and “broke it” they were afraid they wouldn’t have anything to follow it up with because there simply would never be another album. It’s a shame they never tried again afterwards, but they’ve just always been sabotaged by their label(s)
The interview footage at about 6.08 is one of my all-time faves - I had it taped from the tv and used to rewatch it all the time because it was so bloody funny. They were all giddy because they were tired and had had injections and the interview just spiralled out of Jamie Theakston's control. The Spice Girls were such an important influence on kids like me. They weren't well-behaved or quiet or demure and they didn't apologise for it.
24:13 Abbey was there for several months apparently. The documentary was a bit weird with the timeline. I think there were several girls who had as little training as Abbey but maybe she just wasn’t improving quickly enough?
16:16 I think a lot of people would want to see your video about that!! I hope you reconsider making it 😊 because this video was really interating and you're very good at explaining things and the way you go into it in detail. Love it! ❤
Waaait did she play their mum? I knew she looked familiar, it was bugging me! Feels like only yesterday she was a 16 year old Gemini bluffing her way onto Popstars!
Just want to say how much I love your videos and consistency! You always make lengthy videos so I know they take time. I always tune in and am never disappointed! ❤
@@Freyay-yo that's surprising!! The man himself is offering to create a boy group yet there hasn't been enough applicants to go along with the project!
There's another Netflix boyband show going ahead with AJ McLean, Nicole Scherzinger, Kelly Rowland, and Liam Payne (Backstreet Boys, Pussycat Dolls, Destiny's Child, One Direction). I wonder if that show pulled more applicants?
omg been watching you for years & never thought my two worlds would collide!! thank you for your research & love how you took time to learn and appreciate not only the kpop stars but the artists from the other asian countries properly too
I dont think they cut Abby just for a shock for their first episode. She has star quality, but wasnt keeping up with the pace of the other girls in terms of improving her dancing etc. she needed a lot more time to hone her skills which they didnt have. Manon also had no training whatsoever but she debuted JS.
That's why the girl's frustrations are valid. I don't get why people didn't see it that way. They just love to paint manon like she was some victim. She was scouted for her looks, she got in easily, and she got privileges that the other girls didn't have. Good for her, but she knows why she's there and she is too complacent. The other girls and the choreographer were just being real. But they were painted as villians. The fact that Sophia and Lara were painted as villains literally shows that stans prefer visuals over hard work and talent. If you watch the documentary with a non biased lens, you'd agree with the other girls. There's a reason why some of the contestants didn't like her. It it wasn't out of jealousy. It's because of unfair treatment. Why would sophia, the girl who places on top would be jealous of that? Why would lara who has star power and quality skills would envy her? They were frustrated. The people who would see it as bullying are the ones who truly never experienced real life to begin with since constructive criticism shouldn't be painted as bullying. Manon stans have a victim mentality, and i think it brings her more harm than good.
and the drama between manon, lara, sophia and adela was taken out of propotion...naisha however y'all need to convice me otherwise and i felt like the producers painted such a bad pic of adela when it came to the whole situation, Manon is my bias, but we could see where the anger came from, but at the same time the girls did not have to speak about manon like that behind her back and instead spoken about it with her and express their frustrations...another point is that if we look at katseye now, all the members suit the group because of the theme of the group. ANYWAYS stan katseye🥰
As someone who actively voted during the actual survival RUclips clips, because that definitely wasn’t a show, I really hated that there was almost no content as show. I didn’t not understand why the girls were crying during Adelas elimination because we didn’t know about the dynamics and it was such a set up that some girls sang and others only danced to a cover. The singing was way more intriguing and brought one closer to the contestants. Like skills are important but in the end most people voted based on visuals or nationality. Also Marquise was not seen whatsoever during either of the shows. It was also SuS that no one addressed the Samara drama because she would have made it without her scandal. Lexie was my fav and gained even more recognition after the documentary. Slay Also them just putting them in a survival show, because let’s be real after training for a year and thinking being close to your dream, you won’t drop out of the survival show beforehand simply because of hope. The manipulation is crazy. At least it wasn’t 99 girls like in girls planet 999 because that would have been siiiick
Produce48/101 + Idol School are my recs for korean survival shows maybe Girls Planet, but its like watching a warcrime with lots of glitter and pink thrown around. Literally jail worthy production. But their guilty pleasures to watch I can't lie. Not sure yet if I'll give Universe Ticket show a shot I couldn't get past ep 1
I think this is a very thought-through video analysis of the docu overall, there are trainees I like who didn’t make it in the group but I do think all katseye members deserve their spots, they do all have enough talents and star qualities u need as a popstars. also, I agree with that seems like the survivor show and documentaries seem to cater to two different audiences, which is very confusing
I love how K-pop ripping everything from Western Band (training to genres, especially Black and Japanese culture ) and 20 years later sharing it with the west/world like... what do you mean by K-pop training? The same Training Destiny Child and NSYNC went to before K-Pop was even a thing ? The same K-pop had a lawsuit because they kept copying black artists? The same K-pop that was invented by a guy who studied motown in the United States gave little to no credit to black people and kept being r@cist and culturally appropriate them ? The same K-pop that steals from Western songs that are known in Korea to make a living? Anyway...
people love to discredit black people so much it’s acc sad. everything in kpop is just a straight rip off of western culture ESPECIALLY black american culture.
Kpop training and western & japanese traing system is ALOT different 😂😂 if it’s a rip off then why ppl come to Korea to learn the system? Even XG the japanese girl group has whole Korean team working for them 😂
@@naye6359 The founder and former CEO of SM entertainment even said he took the training system from Motown which is from America. This is coming from the guy who started K-pop’s market. There’s nothing special about K-pop literally just pop music but in Korean.
@naye6359 XG litteraly trained in Japan... the only thing they did with Korea was speaking the language... if you look at EXPG groups or Avex Groups, you can see how talented they are and trained better than Korean artists... J-POP paved the way for K-Pop, and Koreans can't accept it, so once K-pop became globally , they took this opportunity to take foreign idols that never trained in this kind of system to make them appear weak. Hence why they decided to take AKB48 in Produce 48 and not Japanese trainee who were trained under those big labels.
@@fearnot_jeans just because they trained in Japan doesn’t mean they can’t get kpop system lol their whole team is Koreans and their song producer is Korean they refuse to be kpop idols but keep coming on Korean music shows, Korean tv shows and speak Korean 😂😂
This show was incredibly cruel, and as expected, power dynamics played a major role. You could clearly see how some participants were elevated, while others were intentionally pushed down, preventing them from having the opportunity to truly shine.
30:21 so I kept hearing the term “survival show” thrown around and I kept thinking they were going to make them do like…games 😂 like The Challenge or Survivor or something. I was so confused as to how that would make them better K-pop idols
Blackpink, Little Mix and Aespa are my fav girl groups, also I am a fan of TLC but I learned about them 2 years ago so I was not active during their peak years
Even with all the issues, I'm glad the 6 girls were chosen as members of Katseye. I love all of them. I'm glad I got into them after their debut since I didn't get to develop any attachment to the other trainees. That would have been heartbreaking.
I’m watched the documentary. The girls were judge on the 4 criteria dance, sing, visual &star quality. I feel the contestants focused only on 2 aspect (dance /vocals) so when contestant like Manon came that had the other two qualities but lacked in the two that they prioritized, they resented her. The process it self was not explained to Manon properly, who is from a country(Switzerland) that prioritized wellbeing over pushing one’s self to the breaking point (injuries/sickness). I feel after the way the girls were frustrated with Manon & she called a meeting, she understood their perspective as well. I also feel that 20 girls in a room speaking about 1, cannot be good for that 1 girl’s mental health or confidence. They were saying things about Manon appearance which was a judging criteria of the program🤔 Missy silencing Manon when she tried to explain herself did not sit right with the audience; especially when it was shown some of the claims the girls made were not true (note taking/ others missing class etc..) I think the girls were teens in a stressful environment and made mistakes. I’m pleased that they all seem close now. Respectfully, I think in your reaction, the grace you offered others is not extended to Manon. The Mental health of all the girls is important.
The og reality was all about vocals and dancing, at least it was sold like that at the beginning. It stood out from other kpop competitions because the only thing we had to guide our votes was the performances and little introductions with their nationalities at the forefront. Not drama, non storylines and such. But it was short lived. Also, I recall during the "Buttons" mission, the issue of Manon not going to practice was brought up for the first time, but they never explained that it was because she was sick. And in the behind the scenes, Celeste said that they were constantly sick and injured from practice. At the end of the day it's a mix of stress, misunderstandings and the team behind the reality handling everything poorly on purpose.
If you are intrested in kpop survival shows here are a few i know: produce 48 (2018) [formed izone, two of the members in izone then debuted in lesserafim when izone disbanded!] = the lineup is known to be rigged girls planet 999 (2021?) [formed kep1er] = known to evil edit to get ppl to vote certain girls out others i can think of are : my teenage girl (formed class:y) though that show is very frustrating to watch as almost all girls are minors and iland 2 (formed izna)!
I loved this video because you mentioned every thought I had on this show….. I am rooting for katseye too…. I really want so see them succeed so stream touch❤️
say now are so cute, I love them! It's also a relief knowing they are sisters with equal input into the band after learning the tragic working conditions of idols and trainees
No hate towards Manon, it’s not her fault she got chosen. However, for young girls, it feels like it’s reiterated the idea, that if you are an attractive woman, it doesn’t matter how smart, hard-working, talented etc you are, you will be privatised in life. If you aren’t pretty you may aswell not try. Again no hate on Manon but it’s hard to see really as a young girl myself.
35:53 That plan is so dumb. I didn't watch the documentary, but I saw the reality at the time and the reason some people dislike her came down to she being focused on more instead of the non american trainees. Even I and others thought she was the one hybe wanted so bad to debut And I wasn't wrong apparently. They obviously had the final lineup planned out (which is fair) and panicked when they realized people were voting for non american contestants, even though that's how they had sold the reality show in the first place. I admit it's funny to see Bang PD frustrated that in his competition based on the Olympics the viewers were voting according to his own vision of it as a competition based on the Olympics.
Knowing the final members in advance it was so odd watching the doc crap on Manon and paint such a dark picture... Like is this a good promo for the group?? Anyway good video. Stan Katseye Stan Twice ITZY Aespa Nmixx Ive Le Sserafim STAYC Purple Kiss
I don't think Manon was painted as a villain lol, if anything that case would be for Adela, Sophia and Lara, mostly. However, none of those girls were villains, their frustration was valid but at the same time Manon didn't have directly a say on people's voting, she was just liked and that's why producers kept her in the program, wich obviously was very biased since they had rules. She was the main character in both, Dream Academy and Popstar Academy. At the end, they all talked about it and it was clear they worked things out, you can even see a clip where Lara and Manon are holding hands together before performing and way before the final results, so that says a lot. P.D: Sadly it seems Adela and Naisha are still bitter about Manon, however Adela follows her on IG.
@@greenthinggg Yup, I mean, I have some friends from school that didn't like me at first and then became my closest friends. They didn't know me, just judged for whatever reason lol. That happens in real life and again, their frustration was natural and I don't blame them. It wasn't cool to talk behind her back though, but they were (are still) very young and let's not forget the amount of stress and pressure they had at the time.
I feel like you just brushed off the success of Twice in this video. despite the impact of BlackPink, it's worth noting that Twice were the first kpop girlgroup to successfully push over towards the Japanese market (the largest consumer of music next to the US) and opened the idea of introducing non korean members that eventually led to other groups introducing members from other countries to widen the audience demographic which then made it more and more easier to expose foreign audiences to kpop.
@@velky_reeds I don't think the point was to go over the massive success of the kpop girl groups, because it's a video from a western mindset, talking about specifically western/global girl groups.
He mentioned blackpink for a few secs and u wrote a paragraph😭 I dont think anyone denies Twice's success it's just that blackpink is the name non kpop fans mention first because those girls are titans when it comes to their popularity and they're also more known in the west
It's really interesting because the most popular survival shows like Produce 101 combined the documentary style with the survival show so people become invested in the training processes whilst voting. That has its own set off problems, such as "evil editing" but I can't help but wonder if Dream Academy might have benefitted from the same style. I'm a kpop fan and heard about Dream Academy when it aired but didn't follow it. It was the documentary that made me love the girls enough to follow Katseye.
You know what also bugs me that NO ONE ever mentions??? In the beginning of the show I think they mentioned there were 140K online submissions to join the training. You CANNOT convince me they were able to find only THIRTEEN girls in between there, only to add in seven others later to make it twenty. It just seems odd to me
@@greenthingggthis is so true!! In most of those videos I've watched, they'll say stuff like "now, I don't really listen to kpop..." There's nothing wrong with it, I just think it's funny yet cool at the same time that KATSEYE is reaching non kpop listeners 😂
@@greenthinggg me too! I wanna see them explore 90s R&B sounds for their music. To not lose ties with their "still-to-uncover" vintage dolly concept and lore, I'm sure there's ways to make it work! Like 702's song, 'You Don't Know' or Brandy's song 'I Wanna Be Down' or Blaque's song 'Bring It All To Me'.
Emily was never going to get in the group. Their physical appearance is very much apart of the deciding factor. After the fans chimed in and shared their opinions on Emily and Adéla... It was unfortunately a wrap for them
exactly. neither of them would have fit in with the groups aesthetic as terrible as it is to say. hybe x geffen wanted a certain look for them and they have it with this current line up.
I just wish they would’ve said “Manon is objectively the prettiest trainee, and that is why we are prioritizing her” instead of coming up with some intangible bullshit that meant nothing like “it factor” or “star quality”… very condescending and infantilizing to the other girls. But anyways the documentary was very well done imo, and as someone who watched Dream Academy in all its unorganized mess when it was going on last year, this series really surpassed my expectations.
It’s more than just her being the prettiest tho. Star quality is when the public’s eyes are just drawn to someone on stage and they have that thing that makes them attract fans, even if they aren’t the strongest singer or dancer
Hmm... I'm not sure I agree with that. A ton of the girls were almost or just as pretty as Manon and yet they didn't receive the same amount of attention she did. Even now with the group being formed, she's always the one who trends the most and if you watch people's first impression of the group their eyes often first go to Manon. Yes, she is extremely pretty but so are all the other members of Katseye. Sometimes a trainee in a survival show will be extremely pretty but still won't debut because they lack talent. Manon also lacked experience but the difference was that she captivated people and intrigued them. So to me, she does have an it factor that's just undeniable. People see her and they instantly see something in her, that doesn't just happen because you're pretty.
@@rose-nn3wj I don't agree with the last line. Those things do happen when you're pretty, and when you are as gorgeous as Manon. It's not just avarage beauty, she's GORGEOUS, and that drawns attention and was the reason she was a Model turned singer. Just accept it
Spoiler alert 🚨 I have a theory on Manon. They chose her to be on the show because they said from the start of the show even when her skill needs a lot of work, that they brought her on because they knew people would like her and she had star quality, and they were right. Even when the girls were angry with her at first, she made it in the band despite Emily being better but Emily wasn’t a fan favorite, so obviously the judges and fans picked Manon. She’s beautiful but yea this is what I think. It was planned and the more weaker girls were put in the show to set example for the other girls, it’s a fear mongering thing.
the only reason why emily wasn't popular because sadly of her skin colour she defo had star quality and one of the best stage presences on the show but since she didn't have a dedicated country like sophia (philippines), samara (brazil) or lara (india) she didn't debut and most people at the time were saying they didn't wanna add a white girl cuz that isn't exactly a global girl group
The black hair made her disappear next to the rest, the blond actually makes her stand out. I think a red or even red-ish brown color could’ve worked maybe better than the blonde and she would still stand out
I wasn’t interested at first, but i really like Katseye. The girls are really charismatic and talented so its a joy watching them perform. their asian promotion in Korea is doing really well in terms of garnering new fans. Only time will tell if they can hit it BIG big though
It makes me happy to hear that their promotion in Asia is going well!❤ Are they getting lots of positive feedback?
Girls need more songs
I feel like they set the girls from Japan and Korea up by giving them significantly less time to prepare like justice for ua,hanari and mei
I’m guessing those girls had already been training somewhere else like yoonchae, so they thought it would be fine to bring them in later
mei is actually about to debut in october! the group is called saymyname but no fr justice for those three especially hinari she barely had a chance 😭
They were brought up last min from what I recall from the docu because the trainers weren't satisfied with their current trainees.
i still cant believe that hxg didn't tell them about the survival show, that's so cruel
Honestly
I wonder if hybe×geffen even had a survival show in the original plans? It seems like they decided at the last minute to have one
It's not just cruel but also fraudulent
They knew from the start that only a few of them would become part of the group. Its not cruel. Its show business.
@@GleepTuber When the DA girls came to Los Angeles they thought it was just a training camp, not a survival show. It IS cruel
as someone who was tuned in since the beginning of dream academy and now is a fan of katseye, i wouldn't change who is in the group. but the way they screwed so many of these girls over with no offer to continue training or offering them resources to figure out their life after leaving is actually sooo unethical to me
Is it even common in the music industry to offer those things if a person is leaving?
@staciii definitely not. It sucks.
@@staciii On Korea they just go back to the agency and train again.
It should be illegal to put kids through that!!
Lexie was my fav trainee from dream academy (before the final lineup was announced) and I was so sad that she left, they said in the statement that’s she’d rather be producer than a recording artist, but now since the documentary aired and I found out the real reason why she left I was sad, they all deserve so much better
Wait I liked her too!! I don’t plan to watch the Netflix doc, but can you tell my why she left, if you don’t mind? 😅
Lexie was my favorite too. She is just too charismatic
Lexie was my fave as well, when she dropped I dropped
I think she gained so much respect for it tho
omg i got chills when you said it could be because our phones are constantly portrait and it's only fitting one person. i'm in both worlds, kpop and other artists, and wow i didn't realise the british ggs and other ggs outside of kpop are scarce. stream katseye
Listen to FLO they're literally modern day cheetah girls they're currently on tour with kehlan reviving the girl group scene
Blaque, TLC, Girlicious, School Gyrls, Cheetah Girls, 702, Dream, Danity Kane.... So many amazing underappreciated girl groups, yet The Spice Girls and The Pussycat Dolls are some of THE MOST FAMOUS girl groups ON EARTH.
the individual member branding is so important, at least in the western market. and honestly it's best if it's kind of obvious from the start. the spice girls were onto something the scary/baby/posh/ginger/sporty branding. i think that's part of why blackpink are so popular in the west too. they have very clear intended individual brandings that show through in their mvs and performance outfits and literally everything else too. like the branding is very reductive but also effective because it makes you as an audience member feel like they're a group of different girls or women who came together to make this group
edit: also with katseye specifically i think it was a HUGE mistake to put their "psychiatrist" sessions in the documentary. there's supposed to be confidentiality with a mental health professional. i wouldn't be surprised if those girls thought all their comments about each other were going to be private between them and the psychiatrist. it's normal to get frustrated or pissed at other people, especially in such a high pressure environment, and talking to a mental health professional is literally one of the healthiest things you can do about it.
A unicorn.
no one cares for them anymore. get out of here
@@pinklemonade4596 🙄🙄🙄🙄 the copium
@@pinklemonade4596someone's bitter😂
So this kept them afloat enough until they did get big in Korea so once they had Korea plus their original international audience they were set
But mainly it was luck.
The amount of times you repeated "it’s just luck" in that one essay you posted.😂
you need to get into FLO and Say Now aka talented British girl groups that deserve more appreciation!

Just ideas!
@@mahdireza5695 they need a bratz doll brand deal asapppppp
Nah they’re gonna fall off
I think there is such a rise in authenticity that now groups seem to general and to many people to get to know whereas in kpop fans are coming into a new culture and this is apart of it and since images are so tight it’s easier to get to know them and their training makes up for the lost authenticity along with the strict cultural ‘rules’
Yeah! Definitely agree with that
What pmo was when Mitra said the audience wanted drama which was NOT TRUE at all.

Updates on other contestants:
Mei: will debut with the group SayMyName alongside Honda Hitomi from Iz*one and a 2010 liner from the survival show My teenage girl.
Nayeon: participated in a survivial show 'girls on fire' and placed first. They'll soon debut as a 5 member group - all memebers are main vocalists.
Adela: dropped her solo on friday, promotes it a lot on social media.
Boys World could’ve been huge as fifth harmony/ little mix if their label promoted them
yup. this.

The Hybe x Geffen execs all need to publicly apologize to the participants and the viewers! They were inconsistent and unprofessional, in my opinion.
I think the girls in the 'Wanna' be group could not have performed 'Buttons'. It would have looked pervy as they looked so very very young, however they should have started a second group with the 4 of them for a younger demographic maybe?
Mind you, the ones who were left should also have developed themselves as a group too lol I loved Nayoung, wish her all the very best

survival shows are brutal in kpop i'm so used to them that popstar academy is nothing shocking to me 🤣the only difference that the girls are very open and outspoken compared to sk shows
I’m really excited about the trajectory of Katseye
DR Music pioneered the global Kpop girl group with Blackswan: Fatou (Senegalese-Belgian); NVee (US); Gabi (Brazilian-German) and Sriya (India). But big labels want to call their groups first and erase what smaller companies have already achieved.
Katseye is not a global kpop group though, they just had kpop style training … they’re a global pop group. This project is completely unique in that it was created in collaboration with a huge western label. Also their music is not in Korean it’s in English. please let’s turn on our brains!
Katseye isn't kpop.
i wouldn't call them global kpop group tbh. they're a k-pop group with different races. esp when u look at black swans swans history (originally bp rania, an all korean group with one token black girl who was pushed out anyway) i feel like the distinction is in the approach, marketing, and music. xg is more global imo despite being less diverse simply for attempting to sing in a global language and promote in more than just country of origin (japan) as well as the genre and collaborating being all over
@@mayuhmetalthis doesn't really make sense....
These new groups with global members all started to pop up after seeing Blackswan, that's the truth
they picked the right girls for the girl group defo! I love katseyes new EP tho!!
Katseye was just testing the waters like fifth harmony with me and my girls and miss movin on❤❤🎉🎉

You're a great narator, I'm surprised that i actually finished this video that was 1hr long.
No. Thats just how it is
Well, they chose to participate in the survival, while these girls have no idea it's going to be a survival.
This is so informative ❤ i had a bitter feeling after watching the documentary but katseye girls moved past it and they are soo adorable and sweet ❤
I just randomly stumbled upon a video of Katseye’s performance, my eyes were instantly drawn to Manon. (Also Lara) that was before I knew any of them let along there was a Netflix documentary. So yeah I’d say she definitely has the star quality and attitude. Haters gonna hate, so don’t listen to them
Manon was scouted by Hybe and was going to be in the group regardless
So was Lara tho. And frankly trainees get brought in from special circumstances and dropped all the time. SM, hybe, & YG are known for giving sneak peeks at trainees, exciting fans, yet they end up not making it. If she really sucked and couldn’t keep up she wouldn’t be in katseye.
they all been scouted by hybe lol
as a K-pop fan, imo the best 'starter' survival shows for girl groups have to be Sixteen and Produce 101 (particularly the 1st and 3rd seasons, where they created girl groups out of the contestants).
Katseye have not started yet give them break their stage preformances are amazing, they just need better formation and hit songs
Honestly, the end product... Katseye is so good, i think they did a good job and i cant wait to see what the girls do. I will defo be supporting!
Even though their career wasn’t always been stable and they also experienced a lot of shits inside the industry, they became strong and took it as their motivation to do better and now these new groups are looking up to them making them one of the standard of being a great girl group.
also the girlies are in indefinite hiatus and not disbandment.

Little Mix did not disband. One member just left and they went on hiatus afterwards

Manon stans have a victim mentality, and i think it brings her more harm than good.
this is a fantastic analysis!! tysm bc i was NOT gonna get through popstar academy 😭
and the drama between manon, lara, sophia and adela was taken out of propotion...naisha however y'all need to convice me otherwise and i felt like the producers painted such a bad pic of adela when it came to the whole situation, Manon is my bias, but we could see where the anger came from, but at the same time the girls did not have to speak about manon like that behind her back and instead spoken about it with her and express their frustrations...another point is that if we look at katseye now, all the members suit the group because of the theme of the group.
Slay
Also them just putting them in a survival show, because let’s be real after training for a year and thinking being close to your dream, you won’t drop out of the survival show beforehand simply because of hope. The manipulation is crazy. At least it wasn’t 99 girls like in girls planet 999 because that would have been siiiick

Am I lucky enough to watch a video essay of a Netflix documentary of a K-pop survival show of a global girl group???????? I am spoilt❤
This show was incredibly cruel, and as expected, power dynamics played a major role. You could clearly see how some participants were elevated, while others were intentionally pushed down, preventing them from having the opportunity to truly shine.

Even with all the issues, I'm glad the 6 girls were chosen as members of Katseye. I love all of them. I'm glad I got into them after their debut since I didn't get to develop any attachment to the other trainees. That would have been heartbreaking.
The show was cruel. I felt bad for all of them winners or not
I’m watched the documentary.
They were saying things about Manon appearance which was a judging criteria of the program🤔 Missy silencing Manon when she tried to explain herself did not sit right with the audience; especially when it was shown some of the claims the girls made were not true (note taking/ others missing class etc..)
I think the girls were teens in a stressful environment and made mistakes. I’m pleased that they all seem close now.
Respectfully, I think in your reaction, the grace you offered others is not extended to Manon. The Mental health of all the girls is important.
This!!!
BOYGENIUS MENTIONED IN KATSEYE VIDEO 😍 MY WORLDS COMBINED
If you are intrested in kpop survival shows here are a few i know:
produce 48 (2018) [formed izone, two of the members in izone then debuted in lesserafim when izone disbanded!] = the lineup is known to be rigged
girls planet 999 (2021?) [formed kep1er] = known to evil edit to get ppl to vote certain girls out
others i can think of are : my teenage girl (formed class:y) though that show is very frustrating to watch as almost all girls are minors and iland 2 (formed izna)!
I loved this video because you mentioned every thought I had on this show….. I am rooting for katseye too…. I really want so see them succeed so stream touch❤️
if you want more survival shows to watch, you should go old school and watch Unpretty Rapstar or Sixteen (which formed TWICE)
say now are so cute, I love them! It's also a relief knowing they are sisters with equal input into the band after learning the tragic working conditions of idols and trainees
I hope you can discover BINI, girl group from The Philippines😊
No hate towards Manon, it’s not her fault she got chosen. However, for young girls, it feels like it’s reiterated the idea, that if you are an attractive woman, it doesn’t matter how smart, hard-working, talented etc you are, you will be privatised in life. If you aren’t pretty you may aswell not try. Again no hate on Manon but it’s hard to see really as a young girl myself.
Evil mitra😂😂😂 i can't ❤
I luv mother mitra😊❤❤ she's such a character 😅
35:53 That plan is so dumb. I didn't watch the documentary, but I saw the reality at the time and the reason some people dislike her came down to she being focused on more instead of the non american trainees. Even I and others thought she was the one hybe wanted so bad to debut
And I wasn't wrong apparently. They obviously had the final lineup planned out (which is fair) and panicked when they realized people were voting for non american contestants, even though that's how they had sold the reality show in the first place.
I admit it's funny to see Bang PD frustrated that in his competition based on the Olympics the viewers were voting according to his own vision of it as a competition based on the Olympics.
the og girl group are the ladybugs from that one episode of Petticoat Junction
Love katseye 🎉 🪽✨💥
Agreed it sucks that the girls are getting hate when clearly they have all resolved this issue already
It just seems odd to me
yay! i love british mike’s mic! (endearing)
you should watch produce 48 (the survival show that formed izone)
Hybe..lists only BTS..instantly knows this won’t be a lens of a kpop fan lol
Almost none of the videos discussing katseye are kpop fans so it kinda makes sense lol
@@greenthingggthis is so true!! In most of those videos I've watched, they'll say stuff like "now, I don't really listen to kpop..." There's nothing wrong with it, I just think it's funny yet cool at the same time that KATSEYE is reaching non kpop listeners 😂
@@mahdireza5695 yeah lol I wish for their success
@@greenthinggg me too! I wanna see them explore 90s R&B sounds for their music. To not lose ties with their "still-to-uncover" vintage dolly concept and lore, I'm sure there's ways to make it work! Like 702's song, 'You Don't Know' or Brandy's song 'I Wanna Be Down' or Blaque's song 'Bring It All To Me'.
Asia have the majority of population so they need to promote their music there bcoz they are a global group
you should watch iland 2. It just aired, so the group hasn't actually debuted yet, but it was rlly good imo. The girls are all so talented
If Lexie had stayed I believe she as well as Emily would have made it. Two shorter girls even out the rest, it’s better than just one
bro, you good in analysis maybe you can check BINI a PPOP Girl group from the Philippines
That's interesting. Star quality is the same as being a tall model, skinny and gorgeous. I agree with you.
@@rose-nn3wj I don't agree with the last line.
Those things do happen when you're pretty, and when you are as gorgeous as Manon. It's not just avarage beauty, she's GORGEOUS, and that drawns attention and was the reason she was a Model turned singer. Just accept it
@@rose-nn3wjyou said it urself “just as pretty”
How can you forget about Boy's World?😢
He mentioned them for a second 😭
16:19 i would like a full video on this!
I was soooo disappointed when they dyed Daniela’s are so dark. The blonde is 10000000% better
@@kingworm7168 it's back to blonde now, I think they dyed it for their last comeback
@@ineeduenthusiastand it looks so much better
The black hair made her disappear next to the rest, the blond actually makes her stand out. I think a red or even red-ish brown color could’ve worked maybe better than the blonde and she would still stand out
