I feel like another big reason why 2014 and the early 2010's are coming back to style is because many people of my age (People born 200-2004) are a huge influence and due to today's stage of the world, become nostalgic and wish to go back to the early 2010's where we were young teenagers and the world just seemed to be a much better place. A perfect example being Bethany mota's old videos, the world was much more colorful, almost everyone liked the same stuff and followed the same trend, while nowadays everyone due to globalisation, likes something completly different which makes it harder to bond with people. I've been longing for the 2010 era since 2020 and it's not surprising that everyojne else is doing it now too.
20 years because that's when the children who watched adults be amazing in their eyes come of age. So y2k children are coming of age and are finally able to buy and dress just like the adults they saw when they were kids.
same lmao but to answer your comment it’s because of TikTok fashion influencers tbh! they just don’t know how to wear stuff.... they just add “-core” to every little thing imaginable saturate it and then they jump to the next thing. All this in a few weeks mind u... even when they try “old” trends it’s a disaster like y2k that people somehow mixed up with the mcbling style when they are quite literally opposites💀 few people know about real personal style anymore I wish they encouraged to build your own style like a patchwork from trends elements that you like or things you invented yk !originality.. without having to put labels on it.
not me thinking all my fashion choices were completely ✨unique ✨and trend-setting at the time and to now hear Lewys basically describe each era of my teens
This was honestly the best time to be in middle school such simple fun times….. I also think now that people are allowed to wear whatever they want and mix styles, which creates so many different trends that it makes it difficult for people to pick one thing to focus on.. also a saturated market of things available makes trends change.
Oh my gosh I was in high school-college in America during this time and you hit on it all!! This is my favorite era of fashion just because it feels familiar. I have so many pictures of me in these clothes 😂 love it- great job!!
I think what we forget is that when old trends resurface we take the least cringey ones and make them more aesthetic and relevant again. The worst of the cringey ugly trends of the 2010s will never come back because it was never cute in the first place
As much as I'd love that because my tumblr soft grunge inner-self would be ecstatic, don't you feel that we will be going through a more specifically late 2000s revival in the mainstream first? Like I see so many people bringing back very classic mid/late 2000s mall emo on TikTok for example, or hints of what the internet has called twee. I know it has a lot of ties to the early 2010s but there's still a difference between the two.
Loved this video! I'm looking back on what I worse as a teen in the 2010's especially 2014 it was big on minimalism. outfits just full of very basic pieces honestly. I can see it coming back, but just refreshed more modern way. Like how it was done recently with the 2000s revival.
In 2012 I had a teacher who hated the mustache trend of the time with a passion. She always talked about how stupid she thought it was. So one time when we had a no uniform day at school my best friend at the time and I came to class decked out in head to toe mustache apparel. We both had mustache tees and leggings and my friend drew mustaches on her knock-off converses with vivid. Someone's mum probably has a picture of it on a digital camera somewhere. Those were the days.
2014 was such a good year. I understand why modern teens are jealous. I was in the j-fashion subculture starting around 2010, and mixed those influences with the “twee” hipster style of the time, as those clothes were more accessible to my teenage self. The subculture trends were elite: mori girl, cult party kei, dolly kei… all those styles felt easier to emulate without the budget to build my lolita wardrobe. ❤
So true what you’re saying about the trend cycle. I feel like celebrities want to be the initiators of trends even more than influencers to stay relevant so that people credit them for wearing it "first". There were just so many things influencers and the online fashion community started wearing after they saw someone like Bella Hadid wearing them.
Eventually we'll all be fashionable as the fashion "swing" will just be so back and forth... So we can just wear everything again. I've never followed trends I'm 31, nothing appeals to me anymore I still rock vans, skinny jeans, a t-shirt and a smart blazer.
Yes!! Would love a Topshop deep dive! I saw on TikTok digifairy discussed about what happened to Topshop and would love to hear you talk about it (p.s. well done with these long vids, I’ve been really enjoying watching them lately!❤)
obsessed with these videos!! I feel like Claire’s had such a big influence on British young teens fashion. Why did we allow bowler hats to be so popular lol lol
So by the 2030s we'll be nostalgic for 2020s, which already is just mixed/recycled fashion of the past few decades. Have we reached the end of original (every day) fashion?
I am still sadly too traumatised from the 2010s time, maybe because I was a child and early teenager and my style was basically the worst/most basic stuff out of all of the trends at that time. (Can’t believe my friends called me fashionable when I wore skinny jeans with high knee boots and an oversized T-shirt at the age of 14💀) However, I do like it when people take the best things from each decade and make it trendy again!
I was 17 in 2014... was very anxious, stressful, depressing year for me. The internet was my happy place though. I lived for Tumblr and RUclips those days
Omg American apparel i worked there in 2015 and man you got me missig some of the pieces i used to wear. I miss wearing my jelly pointed shoes and AA riding pants. I remembered adding studs to my converse and shorts. Wow such good memories, i can see that coming back
I was 25 in 2014, flat broke and living in Paris. I can confirm that, when you can only afford one shirt, it’s gonna be a shirt you can wear to work. I preferred a collared shirt because I could wear it buttoned up with a statement necklace at work, then undo the buttons and have a lower cut in the club/bar. I wasn’t dressing that way because I loved it, but because I had to.
I don't think fashion will ever be mono-culture-centric again and that a good thing. Unlike other era, the 10s are super well documented and it is super easy to have an overview of the trends. It indeed reveals a consumer society centered around flagship everyone wanted, paradoxically wanting to be unique at once. The so called gen-Z culture is just the general zeitgeist, and a continuation of that but with more diversity. There's no longer a generational thing (series, trend, etc.) but a multitude of things to pick from. My point is, if the 10s were to make a comeback, I don't think it would be about specific pieces like yoga pants, moustache, beanie etc. (maybe at the beginning as an obvious direct reference). Back in the 10s I hardly imagined how would the 2000s would come back because it sounded like what everyone hated. The mcbling thing might have been directly referenced by influencers. But what the revival really brought is an overall, broad aesthetic and silhouette (baggy, puffy everything, laces, and a street vibe). This translated into brand new ´trends' (Gorpcore, Cyber-grunge, Neo-Y2K, Acubi...) Thus, if the 10s were to return, an actual revival would be more global, people will try to emulate an idea of the 10s rather than copying the style. As you mentioned, the clean girl thing is a modernization of the corpo-cool style from the 10s. You made me realize that this is exactly how I felt the 10s, the mix of anything (grunge, vintage, goth, arty...) with a slick, business-friendly silhouette I imagine the current early 2000s revival ending with an 'anti-core' movement drawing inspiration from indie-sleaze and 'tongue-in-cheek', non curated aesthetic. Based on runways, I think it will take a more dystopian tone though (more about the grungy, moody part, less about partying)
