christopher young stop it bruh. People say Nas won the battle, but Hov clearly won the war. In fact Takeover was a better song. The beat was better, and Jay was spitting facts.
Kevin Allen what facts are you actually talking about? Takeover was pretty much all industry gossip and Jay rapping about Nas career like a fan would. Nas could've easily gone in that direction by clowning Jay for his wack rap beginnings, not being able to get a deal and it taking pretty much B.I.G dying and a whole bunch of hot producers and payola for Jay to blow. What Nas did on Ether was a surgical takedown of Jay's entire persona and fabricated image. Down to how Jay has pretty much bitten every hot trend. It kills me when people say Takeover was more factual just cuz Jay focused on industry bullshit. Nas was 100% factual on Ether, otherwise it wouldn't have stung Jay like it did nor gotten the reaction from the public.
Papoose is a great mc and he's not "hot" because he did not want to go down the industry path, but he's very talented. And yes. Nas is still superior to Jay Z. His first rhyme on Main Source's "Live At The Barbeque" and "Illmatic" itself is enough to put him above Jay Z. I remember when Jay Z got his commerciel break through in 1998. No hip hop heads were really into him. People listening to mainstream music and pop music liked him.
Simon Dilling Christiansen Hes not hot because he's not a great song writter. It takes more than just lyrics, you gotta have the whole package. Beats, hooks, flow the whole thing. Not just raw bars over a weak beat with a wack flow.
The Takeover was just hot for that year but nas ether is still relevant to this day its timeless .lets be real no body talk about jay z takeover anymore .the pll who doesn't think jay z loose that beef u clearly don't know shit about rap
Here I go dude even jay knows that he lost that beef so is his peers and the rest of the world. Dudes still bumping ether when last u heard take over unless u a hiphop head or jay fan
Nas is on Pac's level on a rapping scale and IMO he's more all-around skilled than Pac, but that's about it, Pac was the real deal and Nas is the only artist I bother comparing with him.
When Nas responded back at him; somehow Jay decided he wanted to get involve and take a verbal shot at Nas as well; but the way he did it was real slick. He was in the process of dissing Prodigy of Mobb Deep during Summer Jam 2000 when spit the first verse of the song Takeover. He hadn't completed the song; but at the end of the verse he threw a verbal dagger at Nas and that's when Nas responded to him with a freestyle over Rakim's PAID IN FULL BEAT!!!
This was a good ass interview, and funny as hell. Pap is that dude. Good to see him still standin' by his woman while she locked down. Can't wait for Pap's album to drop. Been waitin' on it for the longest time.
He even took a dig at Jay on the song "Got Urself a Gun. Listen to his first lyric CLOSELY: "My first album; had NO FAMOUS GUEST APPEARANCES; the OUTCOME; I'M CROWNED THE BEST LYRICIST"!!! Think about it; if you listen to Reasonable Doubt; you had FOXY BROWN on there; you had Biggie on there; you had Mary J Blige on there. On ILLMATIC; it was just Nas and he had ONE joint with AZ but AZ was up and coming himself at the time but so that don't count because nobody knew him!!!
EXACTLY that's all i'm tryna say. Ether was just all this 6th grade insults (which reminds me of "hit em up") nas was highly emotional w/ those lyrics. but takeover jay was hitting him w/ the facts in a calm state of mind which is how common did it on "the bitch in yoo"
u hit the nail right there brother!!! people are dumbed down from the truth thats what they would listen to rappers like Jayz, lil wayne, young jeezy, Wocka Fucka etc
That move on his part was STRICTLY BUSINESS and smart on his part. What better way to try and do damage control than to show not only am I a FAIR man; but I will even sign someone who you all KNOW IS MY NEMESIS!!! And by the way; I didn't just quickly say he was the better lyricist; I was just replying to you when you claimed Nas only CLASSIC WAS HIS WORK WITH THE FIRM; SO PLEASE DON'T PUT WORDS IN MY POST....THANK YOU!!!
with all due respect i like jay z and i think he is a musical genius when it comes to bringing istruments to best and keeping it real smooth... but when it comes down to lyrics... NAS was a fucking beast.. like he said.. all he needs is one mic and its over.. Papoose and nas are similar.. but NAS punches a little harder then PAP... all three are definitley the greastest for what they do..
Everyone knew about that... He talked about it in his song "Cause You know who, did you know what to you know who... Now Lets keep that between me and you"
Totally agree with you and I was always a nas fan. Still listen to De Ja Vue a few times a month, but to be honest Nas didn't kill Jay Z at all. People like the song that's why they say that. If you listen to the lyrics Nas didn't talk about him until the last verse and was mostly clowning his looks. Jay Z was hitting with facts.
Nah cuban linx was a classic b/c it influenced many other classics even though it didn't go platinum. it still gets play to this day. i actually listened to earlier today
Up north rap executive slipping they use to put raw talent on the front lines now they seem to be just tryin to keep putting out the same dudes, listen that nigga papoose been a beast wit that thang
I hear what you're saying and I'm not even saying you're wrong. It's all opinions. To me, whatever diss can to get a reaction out of the masses is what makes it effective. Hit Em Up was so big cuz it was so shocking to hear Pac go out Big like that. Big was on top at the time and for Pac to straight shit on him everybody was like WHOA. Same thing with Canibus on 2nd Rd KO. It had been a minute since anyone had the nerve to go at LL, dude is like royalty. So the shock value is what killed it.
Nas didn't come with Ether until after Jay put out the full version of Takeover on the first Blueprint album. As far as how the beef got squashed; Nas was ready to end the beef way before him and Jay made peace on that stage in December 2005. Angie Martinez of Hot 97 in NYC asked Nas once if he would ever do a song with Jay during a radio interview; and Nas said of course; when Jay heard about it; his response was FUCK THAT!!
The funny thing is Jay wasn’t on Nas radar. Jay initiated it. He sampled his voice on RD. Then went after Nas girl. Then sent Bleek. Then sent his Roc artist. Then dissed him on Takeover. Nas was never paying attention to him and was doing his own thing. It’s like high school tactics.
Papoose is versatile so he can't be a rip off of ANY rapper. He may sound similar to Big L but I personally think he's better than Big L. Big L had a nice flow and some good music but Pap gets seriously in dept with most of his music.
alphabetical slaughter makes me think about that 'multiples reprise' track from atmosphere's overcast, and that track was dope as shit just slug going through the letters of the alphabet one line at a time
trust me Jay does. It's part his 'hustlers ambition'. Even if Jay had a trillion, he'd stil want more. Hence, just as with all other men, he wishes for a better tomorrow. fact. Jay's words - "I got a hustlers spirit, period!"
@Misterphooey They are acclaimed largely because of PRODUCTION and having Em feature (and produce!) and Pharell (#1 single on BA was "Change Clothes"!) greatly contributed to the success of those albums. In case you weren't aware, *before* BP1, Eminem's MMLP won a Grammy for "Best Rap Album", and went DIAMOND in terms of album sales. You bet your ass having Em feature GREATLY helped his album do well. And my claims about Jay were made first by Nas lol. Just listen to the disses.
That decision to squash the beef if you want my honest opinion was the fact that it had died down and at the time Jay was President over at Def Jam. A lot of the artist on the label was talking about how he wasn't giving them the attention they felt they needed to get their albums pushed; artist like LL, DMX, and a few others. I feel and this is just MY OPINION; Jay wanted to kill some of that static by showing he wasn't selfish as he was being portrayed and he signed none other than...NAS!!!
It's funny how material wealth or success constitutes "a better tomorrow". If Jay truly wanted a better tomorrow, he would invest not monetarily, but morally, socially with programs designed to alleviate the poor and level the playing field for disadvantaged youth. I always felt if a Jay-Z or 50 Cent had HALF the heart of Malcolm X, that better tomorrow would arrive a lot sooner.
IF Common Have A Beef With Jay Z WHICH SIDE That NAS We're Be On Side Of Common Or The Side Of Jay-Z WELL NAS PROBABLY We're Get Between Them And Said THIS To THEM I L💖VE BOTH OF YOU GUYS BOTH OF YOU GUYS ARE MY BROTHERS CAN WE ALL JUST ALL JUST GET ALONE AND DO A SONG TOGETHER.
actually i got through g, it can be done but i came to the conclusion it was already his thang, n i didnt feel like workin that hard just to steal someone else's trait- but it can be done with hard work
@AddictiveKaos No, Nas is and has been a fairy tale rapper. He talks about things he hadnt done in real life and like Jay-Z said on his first video "I CAN'T GET WITH THAT" . If you hadnt seen the video, watch, it's Jay-Z's first video and is super dope.
We can't fully blame the media. Jay has a microphone. If he can use it to brag about bangin' bitches, cars, and Louie Vatton, then he can use it to talk about good. And why whenever Jay-Z is mentioned do people feel they have to compare him with Nas? lol I never brought up Nas or said he is doing for Black people!
I admit that Jay's not as on point lyrically skill wise but in terms of content (though I'd rather here him rap about topics close to the likes of Common Sense since he now has the Cents). I'm not mad at him for rapping about money & cars. When an MC raps about drug life & guns & doesn't live it people hate (understandably so) So why's everyone hating on Jay cause he doesn't rap about those things anymore? He's not living it so he changed up his content to suit what he's living... The good life
Reasonable Doubt didn't even sell close to gold in 1996... it took in my lifetime and hard knock life to come out before reasonable Doubt even touched gold status.
@TheViviid And since you wanna quote lyrics to try and make a point, GURU summed up Jay's whole career: "And you'd be happy as hell to get a record deal / maybe you're soul you'd sell to have mass appeal."
@Stm11111 Jay was heralded the king of NY" o.O How quickly people seem to forget. After Ether dropped, there was an interview on Hot97 where Jay-Z was not only stuttering in disbelief of the scathing diss, but even tearing up. Nas fucked Jay up (badly!). Jay became a successful business man (Rocawear, 40/40, etc), which made him a lot of money. Production - namely, Kanye, Timbo, Just Blaze - & famous features (past and present), got him constant spins on the radio & MTV every summer.
that's b/c all these nas fans always bringing beef from like 12 yrs ago. They can't let that shit go and that's why I don't go to Nas videos b/c they always bringing that shit up
If real lyricists like pap is throwing Drake props, u niggas need to start opening your ears and listen. I don't necessarily like what Drake has become as far as the pop/mainstream shit goes but he been able to rap since his early mixtape days. Stop hating the nigga bc it's the cool shit to do and start giving props like pap and some other notable MCs.
I agree with everythingyou said and repeat all the time in discussions, that jay-z would be a sidekick if BIG had survived. Well ALMOST everything. Cuz eminem is the most overrated "rapper" of ALLLLL time, he himself being a Canibus rip off with chino xl parts thrown in. not to mention others' styles hes ripped off.
Although Common may be the better lyricist Drake as long as he fires back and comes out intact will be more respected and will be better off even if he loses...Common has the most to lose but people wont admit it..
I could be wrong because it is a matter of OPINION; but a lot of times; I feel like people nowadays rate certain albums as CLASSICS based on sales. The problem I have with that is the fact that the albums that get the sales are a lot of this COMMERCIAL BS they push down our ears over the airwaves and on the tube. There are a lot of MC's that have and will NEVER get their just due because of it.
As far as the Nas and JayZ battle. I feel it was a win for Nas because of not just the Ether track; but the overall battle. I heard a freestyle joint he did over Rakim's Paid In Full beat; and he just went ape shit on Jay on that track. Basically discrediting his claim to be a drug dealer and thug before his hip hop career. I've seen and heard interviews from folks close to JayZ who also dismissed his claims as well; so Nas hit with facts as well but folks missed that.
@BeenaBee that maybe true, thats why I go by numbers. I bang ether till this day. Stillmatic, Second best diss song ever behind hit em up. Jay started a war that put him in the elite Nas ran out of wind in the end... Jay kept going..
Nas didn't only murdered jay Z he also murdered the whole Roca fella records #said

Pap a beast from NY He makes us proud and never made it to where He should have.
Good to see Pap is back on the indie grizzy

It's funny how material wealth or success constitutes "a better tomorrow". ironic that in the beef tracks jay was the ones spiting facts and nas was just talking out of his ass
