I like sentiment, but it’s poor logic. Symbolic internationalism, conflict theory, and functionalism will all state that transcendence cannot happen until the immediate self - and all of their deficiencies - are known or acknowledged. How can one transcend oneself if the person has not a known precedence?

The point is that in terms of your musical skills (not actual identity), what you see most of the time are people who settle for very little technique, a limited rhythmic vocabulary and a handful of harmonic tools and then keep rehashing a limited set of possibilities indefinitely. The point is that the musical imagination grows just as the technical ability grows and often times is informed by the same practice.
The makes the point that one should not maintain a musical esthetic that they had when they were 18 while in their 40s, rather, be on a path of learning and let the tools you acquire change your vision.
