As I recall Allan despised the pulling of the string using traditional pull-off techniques which he them compared to a ca's "meow." Allan then adapted his tecnique to a more orthogonal, or perhaps vertical, technique of hammering and pulling from directly above the note with the last digit of the finger vice having the end of the finger slanted from the vertical.
Holdswoth was hammer ons that sounded like pulls and you couldnt hear him pick either.. Santana called him Paganini
Did he actually compare himself to Holdsworth???
Delusional much ...
❤❤❤
Where can I find that clip in the beginning?
🤙🏼🔥
This guy is is carrying the torch strong! Dam! More of this guy!
Alex, in this context, sounds to my ears kind of like Holdsworth & Scott Henderson blended together but it's Alex's own style. Very cool!
Krantz
does he have lots of distortion if he does not hit hard palying legato?
I love this! I’ve been practicing the more modern style of legato for the majority of the year, so I’d definitely appreciate more legato lessons.
Such a humble generous with hard earned secrets that is rare for genius level guitar players
I think it helps a lot to have the right kind of guitar that is setup to allow for the ease of legato and get a consistent and balanced sound compared to picking. Included in that is the strings, fret type, and pickup sensitivity. And, the second most critical element is the effects/processor/amp.
If anyone cares to share, I would love to know what is an ideal guitar(s) and gear combo to be able to get this sound.
Right now I play an es 175 through a digetech 2101, lexicon delay and jbl cabs (12s and 15s). It's a great left hand workout to try to pull off clean legato lines, but that simply is not at all the right setup.
So to get all my lines out it's picking. Im not sure if I am going to build in Matteo Mancuso right hand picking technique, so a compromise is to not have to 'speed pick ' a nice line, but to have part of it a nice fluid legato sound.
I like my 175, but I think it's time to get another guitar and gear setup that can give me that modern jazz tone, but also is a lot more versatile, and that does not necessarily depend on me having to drag all kinds of gear and cabs when I go somewhere to play. To be able to plug in just the guitar with some excellent sound processor thing and then go right into the pa to get a consistent and reliable tone that does not change from place to place would be awesome.
Maybe you can do a vid about this subject someday
Looking forward to this interview!
I am so blown away. Alex really has his own style from a starting point from allan. Wil be a fan from now on totally converted
Alex has a good understanding of legato and knows alot of other things Holdsworth is doing and has chops to emulate alot of His stuff.... super low action, keeping fingers barely off the strings and doing clean hammer ons that sound like pulls .
Are you transcribing some of this stuff on Patreon?
Left as an exercise for the reader?
I will!
Guthrie Govan is a master at it
Awesome. Kind of blows me away how smooth Alex Sill’s playing is! Probably take a couple years practice to develop such a technique (not the speed, but just that kind of time/feel over the strings).
