For Irene case, we didn't know what happened that cause Irene to behave in such a way. I remember that another idol mentioned that it's not uncommon that idols get into arguments with their stylist because sometimes the stylist made mistake (like forgot to bring the safety shorts for idols, chosing wrong sizes, etc) and usually the idols would be the one who get scolded by the production company because of the stylist mistake (like if they were late as the stylist arrived late or if the stylist need to go somewhere to buy stuff they forgot to bring and therefore causing idols to be late). So it is unfair to blame Irene without knowing what happened. Maybe the stylist kept on making mistake and Irene had enough of her

      2. South korea Developed in LESS THAT 30 YEARS, so back down. In many common knowledge they are quite closed to reality (I have friends there)
      3. Yeah MOST COUNTRIES, and in most countries we don't even give attention to that. It's just 1 or 2 history classes, that do not even come in an exam.
      4. America is not the center of the world even if they want to believe that.
      5. Even if they are over the age of 18, WW2 was more than 70 years ago, and believe me, most of young people below 30, doesn't even care.

I might have even had it as a T-shirt since I remember thinking the design was pretty cool. Did you know Italy was one of the 3 axis enemies during WW2 and also committed horrific war crimes. Cause Germany and Japan was an ally and h1tler's purposes making a 'aryan race' and emphasis the this is all because of our own sake and also they're ally with japan he chose this symbol for represent this mindset. It was used before h1tler and he take it. He was really smart guy and he always propaganda that all the things that his doing is for the people. Okay, I thought we already moved on from this issue. I'm gonna keep it a buck as a Jewish K-pop fan. Occam's Razor is the idea that often the simplest solution is the correct one. Sometimes ignorance IS the legitimate reason for something dumb an idol does.
While Japan was allied with Nazi Germany during WWII, Nazis didn't exactly flood the streets of Korea. I asked some Korean friends about their WWII knowledge when the Sowon issue happened (on my Birthday of all days) and all they learned about the western side of it was the attack on Pearl Harbor and the Nuclear bombs leading to Japan's surrender, and they were only briefly touched upon BECAUSE Japan was involved. Anything else they learned about the war was when they were older from watching movies and reading books. So it isn't taught there like so many of you think just like us Americans didn't learn about Korea's suffering in school either. They literally had to go out of their way to learn about that massive part of the war.
As for the Hakenkreuz, it literally means nothing to Koreans because the Swastika is all over the place on temples and other older buildings. It IS just a Buddhist symbol of peace and all that in Korea and again, they don't learn about Nazis so they don't learn the difference between a Swastika and a Hakenkreuz. I doubt a lot of you even knew what a real swastika looked like. Hell, I've only ever heard people use the correct term since this issue blew up yet you all act like you've known it all along. As for the shirt itself, old tour tees are in fashion right now and she probably just wanted a rare tee, as it's kind of pricey on eBay.
Did Chaeyoung fuck up? Yeah, she absolutely did. But JYP was informed and when she learned about her mistake she apologized. She learned why it's wrong and can grow from this experience. That's literally how holding somebody accountable works. So now this is the part where I have to remind some of you that if you aren't Jewish then you don't need to protect us from big bad Chae nor is it your place to accept or reject her apology. I personally do but that's just me.

Here’s the thing, Germany was allied with Imperial Japan but had no major presence in the Pacific Theater. Japan was the major threat in that region, and to Koreans “as well as many other Asian nations” the imperial rising sun is the offensive symbol. A symbol, that many westerners have used in the past, unaware of its meaning.
Nikki Sixx of Motley Crue used it on one of his signature bass guitars, Matt from Trivium used it on one of his signature Dean guitars. Then of course there are countless pop stars who have used it when touring Japan. All unaware of its meaning.
Last example is Tiffany of Girls Generation. She got in a lot of trouble for using that symbol in a Snapchat post. She said she didn’t know and most people in the west seem to believe her.
So why were we willing to give the benefit of the doubt to westerners using the rising sun but not to Chaeyoung when it comes to our offensive symbol?

Okay. I want to start off by saying I agree with practically everything Kookie is saying here. I'd wager to say she's got it spot on, even about Chaeyoung. That said, there is something that bothers me...
Here's what I want to know: Chaeyoung was running around in that shirt for at least four appearances, right? How come no one went up to her and told her "That's not cool" ? How come it took Twitter in order for someone to spot that and go "wtf?" Keep in mind, Chaeyoung was meeting with multiple Americans, some of which were music artists themselves who know a thing or two about the American public, and not ONE of them said "Heads up, that shirt is problematic."
So it's either no one around her cared about the shirt, OR they did speak up and Chaeyoung just continued to wear it until the internet got upset. Do you think Chaeyoung hates her career that much that she'd ignore warnings, or perhaps it was an honest mistake and she didn't mean to insult anyone. She thought she was wearing a Sex Pistols t-shirt.
Look, I agree that if K-pop wants to go international, they can't snatch these middle schoolers, shove them in an art school, and think that will prepare them for the world. Never mind cultural studies and history, but life in general. Say they don't make it as an idol, then what skills do they have? So yeah, education should be priority, but I don't think a mob on the internet is a proper teacher. All the idol sees is them getting push back. They might even view it as hate as their fans defend them. So it shouldn't be on US to educate them. Also, I think WE need to be more understanding that while these are adults, they are treated like children by their companies and fans... so they act like it.
On the Chaeyoung matter itself, I'd be screaming to the moon if she was actually endorsing hate speech and had a history of problematic behavior, but she doesn't. But people are acting like yelling at her is teaching her when it doesn't. All she knows it that people are being mean to her. That's what kills me. What she knows or doesn't know about WWII is debatable, but all I'm saying is that she apologized and has never acted like a bigot before sooooooo shouldn't we give her the benefit of the doubt? Yes, she needs to learn about what's she did wrong, but we aren't the ones who can do it. Just like how we view idols in a certain light, idols view the public and their fans in another light. We are in no play to education them seriously. It should be on the company and the schools they attend. And in Chaeyoungs case, how come no one in her company even thought about educating her?
    There, I said my piece.

Yes y'all do. And for those who misunderstand babying, first learn the difference between babying and understanding. Everyone not angry and out for blood and some people understand that mistakes happen. EVERY SINGLE HUMAN has and/will make them. That's life and it's part of a learning experience. Plus, being "woke" isn't doing the job y'all think it's doing. You're all actually worse than the people y'all hate on or try cancel.
And Western ideology isn't applied around the whole world. Other countries have their own beliefs and ways of doing things. So just because you're hurt and others understand the cultural difference, doesn't mean they're babying

I specifically point out western countries as those are the only countries that view the swastika as a bad symbol and associate it with WWII. In Asia where Buddhism is more common, including the symbol still being used in said religion she probably didn’t think anything of it. What she is in fact guilty of is that she didn’t pay attention enough to where she was when she decided to wear a shirt with the symbol.
The symbol was taken from Buddhism by the Nazis. That’s where they “got it from”

Kpop stans need to understand that most idols fall somewhere in the middle of extremes, just like regular people . On one extreme , a saint and a monster on the other extreme. They can and will be varying degrees of bad people. I once saw a livestream of a kpop idol that replied to someone 's comment by saying "Because you're a good person, you think I"m a good person, too." The way he said it made it sound like he was serious about it, not just admitting to having normal human flaws. I think most people in that situation would say " I try to be a good person, or think I'm a good person, but I'm not perfect." But noooo....he left a weird and creepy cliffhanger after he said that. He literally said his fans were seeing their goodness mirrored in him. Over the years, when I've seen his interviews and livestreams, I remember this. An international fan who is my friend thought she could hook up with him because his close friend (not in the industry) was consistently answering her direct messages back and forth, I told her not to do it. I told her I didn't think he's a good person, maybe not a monster, but he certainly has a red flag for me. She went anyways and short story, he didn't show up. She was broken hearted but at least it wasn't a horror case.

There are many times that the only one attacking Idols about cultural appropriation are from United States, Light Skin or they have nothing to do with the Cultures related about. I’m not saying this as a racist statement but is ridiculous how many times the only ones attacking are people that aren’t even of the group that really need to say if they are agree or no, like, what the hell do you care of that topic if even the “affected” people haven’t made a big problem for that? Now with the first idea I say, obviously I know that many hairstyles have a history to show about, but, if I like it (IN MY OPINION AGAIN) I will use it, I don’t care if people are affected or doesn’t like the idea of me wearing the hairstyle they made, I will use it because is my hair and not the one from them, and if I was the one hated about from that, obviously I will apologize but also tell this, everyone has an opinion about everything and so sorry but this is mine.

For chaeyoung's shirt that she wore to New York she definitely knew what the symbol meant she probably just didn't take it seriously because she just bought the shirt and didn't too much about and just bought it because she thought it looked cool she wasn't trying to offend people with it, and the shirt she wore during SBS performance that was The stylist fault, and there is definitely a chance that she did not know what that meant because I didn't even know what it meant, to be honest when I was looking at this shirt I thought it was cute and I love the colors up until the people told me what it means so it's not just the Korean ignorance on this it's pretty much can be anybody from any race cuz I really did not know and I live and was born and raised in the United States and I had no idea what this symbol had anything to do with Trump or whatever and find out what it means now I'm definitely against and I would never wear it or pick up anything that says that but I definitely wouldn't pick up anything that had a Nazi symbol on it I never gave it much thought but I still wouldn't, but I do know a lot of people do buy this not because they support it just because the design on the shirt or whatever product ii may be on they people won't give it much thought and would just think this design looks pretty cool on this particular clothing, it doesn't mean they're trying to represent it they just buy it because it looks good on this particular item, if people are sensitive about something like this they probably similar protests until people stop making a symbol and putting it on their designs or anyting because it can cause huge problems in the end, but that organization that was supporting Trump or whatever I really don't follow politics and I was not watching the news that much cuz I got tired of seeing him and people talk about him so I had no idea about what this meant or how this offend people she probably was the same, and probably was not following up on everything that was going on involving him.

As a black bisexual kpop fan, it’s literally EXHAUSTING to argue with other on social media by what idols say and do to my culture that can be offensive, they always dismiss black kpop fans as being bitter or dismissive. For instance the Giselle scandal, I cannot tell u the amount of ppl on RUclips that have defended her actions, saying she didn’t know when she literally was a in a international school in Japan, or Jay Park (soloist) literally using black culture as his profit and discriminating against his black fans and ppl still say that he’s a good person and we shouldn’t judge, like if the man was not born and raised in America. Same goes for Jessi with marketing off of black women and heavily appropriating off black culture then denies that she is and fans still defending and supporting what she is doing and Hwasa wearing an traditional African clothing as a Halloween costume, and fans saying she didn’t know. When she obviously bought the clothing so she most likely knew that it was traditional clothing. I’ve been a fan of kpop since 2nd gen stuff like this is nothing new, but ever since kpop has grown more there are more fans willing to defend their faves for saying anything offensive to a community and they don’t care and it’s honestly sad and disgusting that fans put idols over morals
