As someone who was here for 2nd Gen, I just need to tell yall that We Got Married actually caused a LOT of drama and controversy. Some of the idols paired up STILL don't speak to each other because of the hate that happened.

Honestly, this new generation of kpop fans can’t take jokes anymore. That’s why kpop is no longer fun. Every little thing is watched closely and now everything is stiff. SNSD, Shinee, SISTAR, SJ, Bigbang, 2pm, etc. were like the most fun group to watch before. They roast each other's members, not afraid of showing goofy faces, fun and raw personalities and more. They can also do collab without the toxic fandom cancelling them because their fav idol is with another girl/boy.
Now in 4th gen, making eye contact in opposite gender even accidentally will cause so much drama and rumor start flying, to the point where breathing might even cause them to be cancelled. Sad

Even when second gen. groups like SNSD and Kara reunited and had comebacks, they didn't appear on the show. The only times I ever watch Weekly Idol is when a group I stan goes on there to promote their comeback. Some parts are fun, but most of the time the MCs don't even hide the fact that they're just reading off a script. The idols seem to have fun, but there are lots of times when I see the idols who aren't the focus of the conversation just staring off into space or forcing a smile and it makes me sad because how can we have fun when they don't have fun? Basically I think they need better MCs and more exciting segments that every member can take part in instead of focusing the conversation on the same two or three idols every time.

While I love some of the groups today I honestly hate most of the fandoms, I've been a kpop fan since November of 2000 and it's changed so much since then sadly not for the better. Fandoms are toxic and I don't believe they really care about the groups they listen to. We [fans] used to fight for the groups to be seen as people now the fans fight if a member just breathes a way they don't like. The groups when given the chance are funny and when the they get the chance to interact with other groups it's one of the best things out there [for example kingdom, the show was @$$ but the interacts was worth it]
Conclusion: fans nowadays can't take a joke and are too entitled. They made the groups this way and I'm afraid it's too late to change it.

Let’s not pretend like 2nd gen wasn’t toxic as well. The way fans treated Baekhyun and Taeyeon when the dating news broke out as well as the fans’ reaction to Chen getting married and having a kid. The infamous SNSD black ocean. The way the public treated Park Bom after her “drug” scandal. The way an uncomfortable amount of VIPS defended Seungri even with all the evidence against him. The kpop fandom has been pretty toxic for a long time. You’re just seeing the toxicity adjusted to the new generation and the larger social media presence idols have.

These are all good points. I liked the interactions between people in 2nd gen groups with variety shows. I also liked a bit of the unfilteredness of the idols and hosts back then. On the other hand, I understand that some of the behaviors and ways of thinking that were ok 10 years ago could be problematic now. And that shouldn't necessarily be ignored. I also think that some idols just might not be built for variety and thats ok, their music is the most important. Idols with their own agency-produced variety shows could be more comfortable and although I agree with shows being more boring, I don't think they're all bad. Seventeen I think set a standard for agency-produced variety shows. I just wish there was a middle ground because 2nd gen varieties were also quite nice. Maybe variety shows should start being aired on streaming services or promoted on apps that many 3rd and 4th gen idols groups consistently use.

  • @aliciacastillo506

I miss variaty programs. It made them more natural and honest. Yes, maybe problematic at times but honest. I became a Suju fan because of this shows, and I still watch them because of how fun and entertaining they are (ALL HAIL THE KINGS OF ENTERTEINMENT). Also I think there most ALWAYS be a host in a idol show if they are new. This is because some idols are shy and need guidance or a way to break the ice during unconfortable situacions. But after the first years its fine for them to go solo. Stray kids and Seventeen are an example of idols groups who dont need a host to make a show entertaining. But I do see how its not the same for girls groups because of the annoying idea that they most always follow a certain norm. Girls Generation were the queens of entertainmente because they werent scared of breaking some rules. LET THE IDOLS BE THEMSELVES FOR GOD SAKE.

And u could have members from different groups being on the same show and be friends and it was all good (for the most part). That was such a nice thing, seeing all these idols interact with one another and know that they had personal relationships in private.
But now? Nope, cant have them act friendly or be friends. The fans (just like so much of the world) have become so much more sensitive about everything, even though they r super inconsequential.

i think that now we’re just in a space where idols have to be IDOLS. they have to be these untouchable figures of beauty and perfection. even if you look at how in 2nd and 3rd gen, idols still had somewhat achievable visuals. however, now 4th gen idols are supposed to look almost like dolls, barely even close to what a real human looks like. so it’s no shocker that when they are on any kind of variety show, they put on a character. sometimes the super chic one, the sexy one, the cute one, the pro. but always a character.
not to sound like one of those older gen stan’s who hate everything about 4th gen, i like some groups. it’s just gotten undeniably more and more toxic both for the idols and in the fandoms.

This is why I love Exo's Ladder, I'm a sucker for the theme of "kpop group goes overseas for a touristic adventure" and the ladder mini game makes it so fun and entertaining. Although, I'm doubting they'll make another season but it was fun while it lasted
Edit: not to mention Exo's showtime is iconic af, I wish they would do one again 😔

Even though drama/scandals DID happen in some 2nd gen shows (like mentioned in the video) and crazy fandoms were still crazy fandoms, i agree. Variety shows were masterpieces compared to what idols do today. Idols and fans were at least a bit more normal and genuine back then. I also completely agree that 4th gen Idols feel more at easy without hosts, but i think there is just no fun in watching any of those anymore. Its personal, i lost any interest that I had for idols in variety shows nowadays. Ironically, if anything, they seem more forced to do things and participate than ever.

Idols should be on variety shows led by comedians that’s why it was so interesting before . The problem is that many of the host they use now only follow a script. They don’t have anyone clever to say.

That’s true. The way shows in kpop are so different then and now. I’m an og kpop fan and I get to see a lot of changes throughout the years. I think the way we express things now are sometimes too serious and too deep. So it’s not really fun anymore. There are exceptions in how the idols perform in their own shows, fun, entertaining and not shy in front of cameras. But still there are many differences and it can be good or bad.

These shows would be excellent but done correctly and safely, ensuring every idol is comfortable. I miss when kpop idols used to communicate with each other and had genuine fun with each other in the open rather than having to sneak around fans just to hang out with each other, but now you have to worry about saesangs easily taking down people's careers due to false rumors, people acting weirdly behind the scenes. Variety shows aren't what they were anymore, well the ones that displayed actual idols having fun and the ones where idols felt comfortable even behind the scenes, those are the shows that should be brought back!

I should mention this, I think that one of the reason why nowadays idols have their own variety shows and rarely come to the commercial variety shows is because of the mistreatment scandals among the korean entertainment industry. It is to be said that Idols don't regarded as "entertainers" among them and often looked down upon. This is why the infamous Jungkook mistreatment happened in the first place. Then again, talking about Jungkook and BTS, their own variety shows "Running BTS" also really big and famous which become one of the reasons for other idols to follow the same steps. It's a pity that you didn't include this in the video.
    Alas...
Weekly Idol was LEGENDARY. Let me tell you.
Yes the MC was too much sometimes, but you can't deny that they're funny.
Also the dance challenges were ICONIC. I miss the random dance and speed up dance challenges so much 😢
Also the og running man is very entertaining too. Nowadays, the variety shows are not "various" anymore since everyone has their own....

So true now it's way less interesting , idols look bored, don't seems to have fun sometime, not all the old show were great but a lot were more natural & the celebrity could talk to each other without having crazy fans attacking someone for talking to his or her fav etc ...... Now almost all shows are boring except "i live alone" where you can see people being themself but it's mostly actors or people from TV not idols of course what's normal , knowing bro is ok some episode are more interesting than others cause of the game they choose, "Star King" was great, "normal "people came to show their talent & celebrity all mixed were trying it etc..( of course the back stage with the presenter back then was not always great) but if we just talk about the concept it was really funny , beautiful, great to see all artist together like a familly enjoy the show. now it's all the same & really flat.
But it's the same for Awards it's was way more fun before, like a big family not just a preformance for buisness, it was funny too etc ...
But now that Kpop is more known, a lot of new fans disrespect the old generation for nothing , a lot of them are Toxic & start war between fandom for nothing too . of course back then crazy toxic fans existed too but now it's WAY worst .
i'm from 2nd Gen & i saw the evolution 2nd Gen was the Happy funny creative one the one who have build almost everything for the new ones (of course it was not perfect at all ), 3rd gen was still ok but end 3rd gen debut 4th gen everything have start to be Way more Toxic & all about Buisness Buisness, Views etc ........ of course it was always important but it was not as toxic as it is now.

I miss those genuinely funny Korean variety and reality shows that were actually entertaining. I still don't care if people didn't like the MCs from the OG weekly idol, but the OG weekly idol was hilarious to me and we got to see idols interact more comfortably back when the show was funny.
Nowadays idols try too hard to be funny. Shows just aren't entertaining anymore. I miss idols not giving a fuck. Now they HAVE to follow rules that make them look lame and awkward.

Invincible Youth was about as real as it got. It was so entertaining because it literally pulled female idols out of their shells and dumped them in a place to be farmers. It was great tourism for the village as well and I wish they continued doing it in different rural villages all across Korea. Could just keep playing the same games in different places with different idols and it would still feel brand new. Who doesn't want to watch their favourite idols chase chickens, shovel animal poop, plant seeds, harvest the biggest sweet potato, prep and consume traditional meals, build their own outdoor toilet, drive farming machines, compete for popularity in the village town?

I have to largely agree with Kookielit here. The only thing I want to add that while the down side of today is massive fandoms/social media means more demands on an idols image, the downside of the 1st and 2nd gen was the cut-throat environment idols were in, to the point where most saw each other as rivals rather than colleagues. Of course this wasn't true for everyone, but the industry was structures as such that put people against each other at the time. Thankfully some of that has lifted.

Yeah. I think 2nd and early 3rd gen shows were more natural because idols could be more natural and not affraid to tell some things where today they would be cancelled seconds after saying those things. Shows with close interactions between groups and between genders is basicly not an option. Basicly stupid netizens and toxic people in the fandom ruined variety shows.
