It's absolutely NOT their biggest mistake. Their biggest mistake is losing the focus on singing and music and doing only performance groups who don't even know how to sing or why. Their biggest mistake is playing big on consumerism with their albums and merch that is creating a real problem with fans who don't know how to control themselves with it. Their biggest mistake is continuing to exploit idols and fans. They totally can play on domestic medias and western and still be relevant. This is really weird as a western audience to tell how and why they should stay 'domestic'. Really weird.

yes , they do focus more on dance performance but that doesn't mean dancing in less than singing , it is another beautiful art expression , what they should do is to find a balance within these two and not overshadow none .

It was one of the best pastime activities I picked up back then. Learning how to pronounce, write, and read the language through the lyrics was very fun and engaging. And now, most K-pop lyrics are filled with english instead of the language of the genre it's under 😥

I got into K Pop because it picked up a lot of things that most mainstream western pop artists already abandoned - boy/girl bands, intricate choreo while singing, HARMONIES, chorus/pre-chorus/verses that actually sound different from each other, verse 1 and verse 2 having different melodies, choruses that are actually sung instead of having one phrase "talk-sung" over and over a beat drop.

This is also why I got into kpop in 2009, plus the fact that kpop wasn't always about sex and not too much of their body was showing when you think about the songs that came out then which isn't all that bad when i look back and i'm actually able to enjoy the old pop songs now.( I was literally 13 years old and felt like I didn't connect to music like that during the time and music was always my everything)

I used to be a super huge kpop fan. I'm still a fan but I do feel the music itself lost what made kpop so amazing and unique. Companies are focusing so hard to appeal to the western market that most of the groups sound the same now. Like you can literally interchange groups to sing the songs and you wouldn't be able to tell which group is singing it cause most groups sound the same now with the exception of the popular ones. I miss the days when a song came out by T-ara, Kara, SNSD, Infinite, Suju etc... and you right away new "oh yea, that's definitely a Kara song" or "here comes the catchy ass repetitiveness of T-ara". Like you always new what kind of sound or song type was unique to a group or artist. Now most groups use the same type of beat and cadences in their music it kind of is a let down.

Just because they look good doesn't mean they suck. I have gone back to some of the earlier generations and most of them actually sucked. Good for Korea back then, but not read for global appeal. Even the one's deemed ugly by Korean standards at the time weren't much better.
The biggest issue more recently os that they manipulate their vocals so much in studio that they sound too similar...at least the cutesy concept groups (looking at you Twice...) or go crazy with choreo and have to lip sync their performances (Aespa at Coachella...) plus the bigger choreo doesn't connect with the audience due to them worrying more about not messing up vs enjoying the performance. Look at how Blackpink and Mamamoo perform and still connect with the audience. They found the proper balance. Mamamoo more vocally and BP more performance driven with a killer live band to boot.

Kpop as a whole is not going to collectively "succeed" or "fail" in international markets. Kpop is just music and artists managed and produced by companies based in Korea. (There is a somewhat common formula in management and production, but still a lot of qualitative differences between groups.) Some groups are going to succeed more internationally than others. The problem for many groups is summed up in the saying "don't put the cart before the horse". In other words, the groups that have been most successful internationally are the ones that let the international demand PULL them into the international markets. BTS and Blackpink are the best current examples of this. Groups that tried to make it big in the international markets before there was any big demand for the groups were like putting a horse behind the cart and trying to push the cart (i.e. trying to PUSH western fans to make them like the group), instead of letting the horse PULL the cart (waiting until western fans are DEMANDING the group). Psy and Gangnam Style is a very early example. Psy didn't decide to push and promote his song in western markets. Instead, when western markets fell in love with his song, the demand pulled him there for several successful appearances and shows. It's correct that 2NE1 had huge potential appeal to western markets and the demand was there. But something obviously went wrong with their project with will i am . YG has never spilled the beans, but it's entirely possible that the music wasn't very good and/or the western companies and parties involved were demanding things that YG didn't think would be in the best interests of YG or 2NE1. Hard to know. But I'm sure there's a lot more to that story that we don't know. When SNSD appeared on American TV, I knew they weren't going to get good results. The music was generic. But, more importantly, a 9-member group that nobody knows anything about is not going to suddenly get a lot of new fans just by appearing on TV a few times. It just looked like a chaotic performance by too many people on a stage that was too small and nobody in the audience knew who was who.

I think yg just dropped 2NE1 to focus on bp and they succeeded with them

    • @TEAM__POSEID0N
      @TEAM__POSEID0N Год назад +14

@@BITI613 That's the myth. But it's not true. 2NE1 was having problems as far back as 2013/2014. In fact, after 2014 they basically stopped having any significant group activities (two years before BP even debuted). Bom was constantly getting hammered in the media and on social media for the prescription drug "scandal". Before that, the will i am collaboration project obviously turned out to be a total waste of time and money (and that disaster happened before any of the BP members had even joined YG as trainees).
When 2NE1 fell apart, YHS was really focused on his next big boy groups, spending tons of money on a years worth of reality TV shows to promote them (initially as "Team A" and "Team B"). (We saw more of the 2NE1 members in those boy group trainee reality shows than anywhere else during that period of time.) Minzy actually bailed out, announcing her intention not to renew, 6 months before BP even debuted and YG already clearly had decided to drop Bom. (I don't think she deserved that, but I also don't think that B.I. should have been dropped.)
Meanwhile, YHS seemed to be going through a mid-life crisis and wanted to star as himself in reality shows (such as Mix9, where he starred as the savior and producer for struggling trainees of OTHER companies). It's not clear whether 2NE1 would have had any future regardless of whether BP was waiting in the wings. YG's highest priorities were on the boy groups and himself. YG probably never even expected Blackpink to be so successful, since YG always treated female artists as much lower priorities. Blackpink's debut was still a gamble, at a time when for all practical purposes 2NE1 already no longer existed as a viable group. If everything had been going really well with 2NE1, YG easily could have kept both groups going. I mean YG has had up to 5 or 6 boy groups (e.g., Big Bang, Zechs Kies, Winner, Ikon, Epik High, Jinu-Sean and sub-units) simultaneously under contract at the same time. Why not just 2 girl groups? It's not like YG was spending any time on Lee Hi (6 total years in the dungeon) or Gummy. It's unfortunate that a lot of people think that 2NE1 was dropped because of Blackpink, when there's no good evidence of that ever being the case.

    • @nehalilisays
      @nehalilisays Год назад

Underrated comment, totally agree. Girl groups and especially boy groups have always relied on an active (mostly very young) fanbase and it's uncommon for them to be mainstream pop artists who mainly market themselves to the general public. One Direction is considered to be the first boy band who became big globally because of social media - and then BTS did that, too, while taking "global" to another level since I'm pretty sure their fanbase is ethnically and nationality-wise more diverse than those of any Western boyband. (On the flip side that's something their company seems to be overwhelmed with if you think about the high shipping costs for official merch and the small amount of countries they promote & tour in)

A lot of KPop acts want to make it big in the US because we have highly praised actors, singers, innovators, colleges, etc. Once you're popular in America, you have this reach that expands to every country. K-pop reaching out to where their fans are around the world is no different than U.S. and other western artists promoting their music in Asia and other countries. Music breaks down borders. The global spread of K-pop also spreads other aspects of Korean culture like food, language, dramas and movies. It makes people from other countries want to go to South Korea which increases their tourist industry. K-pop idols are global ambassadors now. Yes they should also promote in their own country too. But some groups get so big they out grow their country’s fan base. And yes K-pop should keep hold of what makes their music and style uniquely Korean. But if you ask most idols which artists they admire most and which ones they want to collaborate with, 90% of them or more will probably say a western artist. They like western artists as much as global K-pop fans like Korean artists.

Add to that their history of what they went thru to be successful. Their characters also- they are classy and funny. They are intelligent. They are well spoken. If you notice- western audiences do a lot of research on their people. The "bts rabbithole" is deep and not dissapointing. The USA realized these guys are the real deal and aren't faking it. When we think of pop stars here in the U.S. we see them as empty and soulless. The fact that BTS wants to be a part of that doesn't make them any greater. They are part of the empty, soulless pop culture that's polluting the airwaves. You think it's something to be proud of?! Think again. BTS popularity in the media has gone way down here in the U.S. It's not going to get any better after their military commitments. The way I'm hearing about what some members have been up to seem to suggest they're not going to be enthusiastic to restart their work as a group after their service. Going to keep it real here...most of us who grew up here at least in the US do not listen to their music in earnest. The ones that do are very young kids that want to fit in their social groups and not necessarily because they think their music is great. For older people that I know in real life they listen mostly and not watch videos...and not congregate to affirm/validate their music tastes online. I'm BTS's age and they look like normal hardworking guys to me like every other kpop group but I remember when I was in my teens secretly fanning myself when I saw older guys as super handsome so I understand this dynamic. The music is first and foremost in the USA and even if the guys are cute and funny I don't think it really hits the mark for what we enjoy overall. I'm personally sick and tired of the same make up styles and basic musical patterns used the last decade and I'm starting to believe the music here is aimed at what people believe we like and not what we actually like which is kind of disturbing...

This is stark contrast with Japan, which is the second biggest music market in the world after USA. Even Western artists have releases specific to Japanese market for that matter. This alone makes J-Pop having little need to promote their music overseas and therefore remain strong to their Japanese roots and identity. Even through the 1990s, you could see lots of examples of the same basic formula still being used, especially for "boy bands" in America. In my opinion, the reason why Kpop even managed to get a foothold in the west is because the music got westernized to the point where it was palatable.
The reason why i liked kpop is because a lot of the songs gave me old school vibes with a new school twist.
I STILL think a lot of the much older kpop is cringe and that will never change.
However, more recent kpop is too much 'on trend', which means the only thing differentiating it from anything a western artist is putting out is that it's harder for me to understand what they're saying (either because i don't know korean well enough, or they're using bad English).

As an Atiny I'd like to point out why Ateez works so well in the west and around the world more so than their own country because their music touches the struggles that people in the Western world are facing currently they always sing and talk about the pressures put on the future generation while also cooperating that into their music videos like Guerrilla and even Turbulence, but one of the bigger things is that they have become very educated; especially with what happened with the Hongjoong situation in Thanxx era it was one of the few times where an idol actually came out and apologized for the CA as well as the company themselves. They're also very open about supporting the LGBT community and all of these factors make it easier for people to feel comfortable while Stanning them because, I know a lot of people who find kpop ostracizing by how conservative Korea is and the same goes for their ,music not that it all needs to be specific and stuff, Because ateez sure as heck take every opportunity to introduce their Korean culture in their music. But I feel like if the kpop industry wants to survive in the Western world they need to stay authentic to their music ,but also understand people all the around the world are watching them and we're not gonna go backwards in our thinking we see the double standards and the racism and homophobia. So if they truly want to keep going then Korea as a whole need to understand the power of progression otherwise it's just gonna keep a lot of locals away from discovering something beautiful.
Another note though companies should never overwork their idols or keep pushing them to try and meet international standards continuously because rn everything is up in the air on what's hot and what isn't, so they should be happy in their own country as well.

Pop music generally has always been a business. Kpop itself is not really about Korean culture per se. It's always been an adaptation of pop music business practices that originated in the 1950s and 1960s in the west, when groups of singers were really popular. To some extent, the adaptation first was made in Japan and then in Korea. Korea developed the system to a point where they've kind of leap-frogged over Japan in terms of influence. But the basic template for creating, producing and promoting 3-member, 4-member, 5-member and even bigger groups was never something that organically came out of Korean culture. It's a business now and always has been. They want to succeed globally (like everyone) because that means more money. If anyone doing music in Korea wants to be pure and focused only on Korea, they can do it, but they're going to earn a lot less money. The "purist" musicians are performing in small bars, cafes and dives...and earning peanuts.

For BP, singing in English is as natural for them as singing in Korean. I don't see why they should limit themselves just because some people think that it's more exotic for all of their songs to be in Korean. Rose actually is a native speaker of English. Jennie is practically at native speaker level. Lisa is not a native speaker of either English or Korean, but is very good at both languages. Jisoo is the only one for whom Korean will always be more natural than English. I mean, it's perfectly fine for you to have the preference that you do. But it's clear that BP has gained many, many fans with their English-language songs and, internationally, it's probably a big advantage for them. For groups that have no members who are good at English, they should of course stick with Korean lyrics because it sounds awkward when they try to sing in English.

I would text on videos comment sections , this will be awesome for a long time if they stay away from America. Don’t let American influences destroy what you have , but it looks like I was only one person thinking this , because that’s exactly what happened. And when I started seeing American influences in the music and in the videos , I kinda lost interest. America ruins everything it touches. Movies and music and even government. You had a great thing going , but you lost track of what was important. Being popular is great all over the world , but don’t let the rest of the world into your music , that’s what attracted the world to your music , we don’t want everyone to be the same as everyone else especially America. The music in America really sucks. They sing about disgusting stuff. I won’t listen to ANYTHING modern , I stick with old rock and pop and even some country. Music has lost it’s meaning. And now K-Pop is going that route as well. So sad. I think company should focus to make their group’s song sound like a kpop and focus to promote them more on korea rather than trying to make songs sound like POP than KPOP itself and try to fit in with western music. Otherwise there wouldn’t be any difference between KPOP and POP. As POP songs has it’s own identity and style, KPOP has also it’s own identity and style and it makes them different from others. It’s called Korean pop for a reason and it’s their identity, it’s their culture which should be preserved as it is. At this point KPOP doesn’t even feel like KPOP nowadays.

I disagree tbh. Nothing is a mistake it's a gradual break in to the American market and it's paying dividends for further JYP groups like Twice today who are being warmly embraced.
It's natural to want to break into a bigger market like America. America and Korea are heavily allied with each other and America funded and helped create modern South Korea. And The communists helped create modern North Korea.
Now KPOP artists are selling out arenas in America, doing collabs, and doing the American music circuit. We love them and they love us. They love being able to walk around without getting mobbed. They love our food. They love a less patriarchal environment.
They can still focus on their home country and branch out yall are acting immature about this like you own them.

This made me feel so nostalgic remembering k-pop before 2020. Western market should not be the main focus for groups. It may sound weird but idols too are trying to squeeze themselves in the western standards in every respect...tell me are you seeing any idol anymore with colourful hairs ? No, because k-pop has lost its authenticity....twice's music genre isn't the same anymore and has shifted to bold themes...back then, cute concept was common and popular in k-pop and bold concept was uncommon but currently, the situation has just reversed which is not bad but still bubblegum concept was the authentic identity of kpop. Every girl group is trying to be blackpink which is unnecessary. And the 4th generation too seems kinda messed up with too much conservatism and lack of versatility in discography.
Nowadays group's dances aren't catchy anymore, raps are more like hip hop than typical k-pop,etc. BTS introduced us to kpop now they're are being hypocritical putting more emphasis to western pop music culture. K-pop has its own distinctiveness which makes it so addictive. Believe me or not, k-pop before 2020 was far more better than it is now. Ever since it has become a global phenomena, nothing is the same anymore. Still i love all the groups and will support kpop forever. 💜

Let’s be real… BTS became popular not only because of their amazing discography and generally keeping their sound and their performance, but also because previous generations paved the way. If previous artists wouldn’t have tried to break into the “western market”, it would not have been as possible now. By those artists trying, it slowly began to grow the KPop fan base internationally little by little. I became a fan of KPop in 2009 so I’ve been in it for the long haul. 😅

They didn’t 'pave' the way, be fr. They created the path, the door, an opening but journey had more struggle. BTS faced many more troubles, disrespect, ignorance, hate to break into the western market. It definitely wasn’t easy at all, so you can't say they 'pave' the way, not even one bit. They only made it worse. The western reporters, media and many 'professionals' made fun of them openly. Even the public made fun of them, many even bothered to put their hate and disapproval of bts in their countries very openly and disrespectfully. One even called them an epidemic disease.
BTS became popular because of their discography and passion for music. They came in to the western market out of no where, none expected it. So the only role previous generations played for bts to 'get into western market' is by creating the idol training system for bts to debut and start their career. They weren’t heading for Western music at that time like the groups of previous generation.
The real reason of their entrance was because of their Music versatility and the real reason of them being successful is because Armys were more loyal, supportive more than other fandoms.
All the other groups who had entered the western market, even once, faced almost same difficulties, they were ignored and made fun of them. But their fans never stick to them or defend them properly and since most of the groups were trying to be westernized, they didn’t make new fans to support them and hold others accountable for disrespecting their idols.
But Armys always stick to them, always defended and voiced against the homophobic, xenophobic and disrespectful behaviours towards their idols.
Don't say other groups 'paved' the way because you don’t know anything about BTS's struggle or just don't understand 'paving the way' term. No Army or fan denies the influence of previous groups or the fact that they created the path or built kpop. But 'paving the way in the western market', hell nah. Not even a single bit.

As a fan of The Boyz since predebut,i can assure u that they never once catered more to the western industry or fans more than their native fans...they were quite well received in korea during their debut as compared to other groups from a small company(Cre.Ker then) and then they slowly started promoting in other Asian countries ...they literally had their first world tour in 2022 and a Europe tour in 2019..after RTK they rose to fame in SK and gained more attention globally from RTK and Kingdom.
Even their promotion pattern reveals that they focused on doing native shows which was a great move by Cre.Ker which helped them gain attention among the Korean general public...So,in conclusion..i think it would be better to say that they are now promoting Internationally rather than using the word 'Western' as in the video

@@makeitright777 Even BTS is considered niche in the Western market - particularly the States. In the States, the difference between their fandom and the fandom of say Beyonce is that BTS has the advantage of having fans who are deeply engaged with everything they do and release. They care about streaming, purchasing albums, concert tickets etc in a way that's almost obsessive. Whereas popular American artists have loyal fans but they are not obsessed with following every little thing the artist does. They stream when they feel like it and buy if they want to because they know that their artist doesn't have anything to prove.
And I'm sorry to say this but BTS's American releases did not stay true to their sound. They were watered down, generic pop music made to appeal to the masses. It worked to some degree but it also made BTS lose a lot of the magic that made their music so distinctively good in the first place IMHO.
