Not only is Vegeta’s speech amazing, but Supreme Kai’s legitimate confusion when he says “WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?!” He is genuinely shocked that they would put this fight over the universe and it is so awesome.
Well yeah, he is whining. Vegeta might be a great character, but he's also kind of a bitch. I mean, in his first fight with Goku. He only lost his skirmishes with him, because he was throwing temper tantrums because he wasn't used to fair fights. I mean, Goku and him were extremely close in power, yet because he wasn't used to fighting someone on an equal level, he freaked the fuck out, lost his composure and got his ass kicked. And in his fight with freeza, he legit cried like a little bitch when he knew Freeza was about to fuck him up. And this next instance isn't canon but still. In the broly movie, the dude literally collapsed on his knees in fear, while everyone else was trying their damndest to beat broly. Again, he's a great character. But man is he a bitch sometimes.
@Sonicfalcon16 : fully agree with one big exception the "My foolish pride ... To a Saiyan pride is all" that line was awesome in addition to be true :)
@@sabre4382 True. Vegeta's speech in DBZ had more heart to it than that of DBZ Kai. In the sense that you could feel empathy for his frustration regarding his Saiyan origins, what happened to the Saiyans (destruction of planet Vegeta) and the importance of pride etc.
The Z dialogue is an eloquent summary of Vegeta's downward spiral. He walks you back through Freeza's reign, the destruction of Planet Vegeta, the Namek arc, everything he's been through leading up to his breaking point. I love that brief hesitation, when saying that Goku saved his life. It's like Goku being a nice guy just makes him that much angrier...

@@theguy3129 Clearly you dont understand the fact that Vegeta is actually a whiney bitch for going Majin in the first place. At this point in the series, Vegeta reverts back to the hateful sayain that we first met in the show and that over saw the slaughter of our beloved Z warriors and almost Gohan and Krillin. So, I absolutely love the Kai dub because it paints Majin Vegeta as the unsympathetic LITERAL villain he is at this point!!! Like, people, this is Vegeta's character. There is no "Vegeta sounds whiny in Kai" because he's whining in both, THAT'S WHY THE FIGHT STARTS IN THE FIRST PLACE
The difference between Z and Kai here is so huge and it makes Kai looks so bad. In Kai Vegeta is literally just narrating what we already know about how he feels in the situation. We know as the audience he doesn't care about Buu, we know he is into it simply for Goku. Even Goku knows that. Z is wracked with emotion. We get to hear much more of what Vegeta really cares about in terms of values, motivation, goals. We get to hear him admit how much Frieza's rule obviously psychologically destroyed him to the point of only caring about his own strength. "Spend most of your life ruled by another, watch your race dwindle to a handful, then tell me what has more meaning than your own strength." vs "All I want is my fight with Kakarot! Here and now! I shall emerge the victor!" It's not that Kai's portrayal is out of character or incorrect, but it is worse because it is lacking the depth the OG Funi dub had. In Z we see into his soul, in Kai he acts like a one-dimensional character. This problem applies to a lot of Kai and the entirety of DBS in my opinion.
*This is why I'm don't like modern dubs' slavish devotion to a 100 percent exact literally translated Japanese script. If Z was dubbed back then like Kai was today, we would've never have gotten the masterfully crafted improvised Woolsey-ism dialogue of* _"Spend most of your life ruled by another, watch your race dwindle to a handful, then tell me what has more meaning than your own strength."_ *I want Eng dubs to feel free to do whatever they want with the script if it results in a more memorable and better overall performance in their own language. I don't want them to just copy every way the Japanese version did. I want them to do their own thing.*
@@CapsuleGraph11In terms of production value I would agree, but I would have to disagree on basically everything else. Especially the differences in writing between Kai and the OG dub, Kai might be more accurate to the manga but it also is missing a ton of soul the funi dub had.

@Cole MacGrath I don't actually agree that it had better voice acting, at least for the Buu saga Vegeta clips I've been watching. Chris Sabat seems like he is just trying to get it over with in Kai, and he seems obviously detached from Vegeta in his performance. In Z, he really feels like Vegeta, going all in with the performance and making it believable. Kai is more of a vocal showcase of their improved technical skills as voice actors, but Z had the conviction and emotion behind the voice. That means much in this show to me
@@theguy3129 Typical stubborn Z fanboy, Always mouthing trash to spite other series, But don’t have the sources with them in regards to back up their babbling.
Kai's more accurate in tone to the manga, but it fumbles the actual wording of it so hard. Quick transcription for those who don't want to look it up. GOKU: Vegeta... You surrendered to Bobbidi's spell on purpose... to make me fight. Am I right? VEGETA: If I hadn't, I'd never get to fight you. After today, you're leaving this world forever. SHIN: Just... to fight him...? Are you that insane...?! VEGETA: "Insane"...?! You think this is "insane"?! Who cares about Buu?!! This is what I live for! ...He... surpassed me...!! He's Saiyan just like me, but he far outstripped me!! Me--the prince!! The strongest of them all!!! Once... he even saved my life!!! I can't stand it!!!! ...I can't...!!!! Between this and the famous 'I wanted to go back to the way I was before' speech, there's an edge of desperation for closure and understanding that's absent in Kai's reading of it. As far as Vegeta knows, this is the very last chance he'll ever have to discover why Goku is so powerful despite being so gentle--which is something Vegeta views as a weakness. I could say more but this is an essay already. Z completely demolishes Kai here though, holy shit.

@@westong9082 I swear to God, even with the Buu sagas improvement a year or so ago a friend of mine who was kinda getting into anime but didn't remember DBZ wanted to rewatch it. I sent him the original Funimation Super Saiyan 3 scene and his response was "damn that voice acting is awful" lol
@DeeCee 1.Accuracy doesn't mean decent show. If I wrote a decent comic and someone made a series (with my permission of course) that actually perfects any flaws in what I started, then what is better? The half made decent comic, or the perfected series? Your point makes no sense, it's just an obsession over the source material. 2.No one denied that toriyama started it all with his manga. Noone denied that it's one of the greatest manga out there. Noone denied that the anime came from it. But that doesn't mean it had no room for improvement. A little more emotion here, a filler scene to fill in a huge time gap there (db had a lot of great filler throughout db and dbz, unlike other shows). Improving a show isn't an insult to the source material, it's just an improvement. And obsessive purists like you might be the reason they barely try with this show anymore. As long as it has toriyama in it, you obsess over it.
The Kai Dub in the Lost Chapters/The Buu Arc felt too much like they were just reading a script. OG DBZ they had no clue what they were doing but made up for it in effort and passion, the script wasn't up to par but they clearly believed and were invested in the acting to make up for it.
@@notisttt1240 No he's right here tho. Kai is a better dub cause it's actually what they said in canonically. Accuracy to the original source does make Kai better. Z dub is barely any different from a fanmade abridged. Unless this argument isn't about Z vs Kai then Kai is the clear winner.

Original Japanese dub was even better than Z dub. SO the fact Kai was more accurate to the original dub is even better. This futher proves why Accuracy means a lot when it comes to dubbing plus false dub can cause a lot of misinformation when talking about series. and many other problems. You're point about a you making a comic is a entirely different situation then people dubbing a show. So you're point was already bad form the start.💀
@Mordecai Maxwell The super anime made Goku dumb as bricks and regressed him. Super manga Goku isnt really dumb but more of a continuation of how he was in Z.
@@digizilla164Yea, the past few arcs were awesome, even compare the scene from Superhero where Goku doesn't know what meditation is to the manga where he's just shocked that Vegeta knows how to meditate.
I like both scenes, I'll just say the Z scene IMO wouldn't have fit Kai. Z dub made changes all over the place that make Vegeta less evil at core, more a product of upbringing under Freeza. The manga doesn't really ever "excuse" Vegeta, and his goal for going into the ROSAT was to gain power and kill Goku after the androids. So him being a whiny brat in this scene fits the original depiction of an evil guy forced to settle down, who only came out today for a chance to fight his dead rival lol.
I usually prefer Kai, but Z has the better dialogue here. His dialogue in Z actually shows his inner struggles, meanwhile in Kai he's just complaining that Goku beat him (even though the fight was a draw lol).
@@DaSheepKiller In their first encounter, Goku was beaten to a pulp. Although Vegeta was forced to retreat, he still won against Goku in their fight. In their 2nd Encounter, Vegeta cheated and played Dirty, but still won.
Z portrayed Vegeta like a human being struggling with feelings of anxiety, inadequacy, and frustration. Kai portrayed Vegeta like a collection of tropes. Kai has many things over the original dub but the Majin Vegeta stuff was one of the few things that was gold the first time around.
By this time they were almost on the level of Kai while doing their Funimation adding thing. So in the Buu saga they outdo Kai because they added the right things for a change
Here’s my take in the dubbing; anyone is more than welcome to discuss this with me too: Z: In Z, i feel like Funi got more in depth with Vegeta’s emotions rather than his pride, which is what honestly made this scene and character so iconic for the amount of years Z has been out for. Kai: Of course, Kai is going to be accurate with the manga/original japanese broadcast. Vegeta’s pride was the main focus: both as a Saiyan and as a fighter. He had always seemed more focused on both his title as the Saiyan Prince as well as his pride as a Saiyan Warrior. To kind of sum up what i’m trying to say, I think Z getting into depth with Vegeta’s character was very surprising but also a very nice touch, which is why it takes the win for me in this scene. (I love kai too btw)
Pretty spot on. It's worth pointing out, Z kept adding lines for Vegeta to make him seem a little softer. In the manga, man was ruthless until he had a kid, then he was forced to chill until he snapped here.
Here's my thing about this, I think the Z dub itself gives Vegeta certainly a much better reason for why he allows Babidi to control him. I like that it actually delves a bit into his anger over having the Saiyan race being nearly extinct, his anger over Freeza ruling over him and his rage over ultimately watching what he views to be trash ascending the food chain... but there are shades of a character here that just isn't what Vegeta is, especially at this point. Vegeta is supposed to be this prideful, petty baby who clearly was raised into believing that he's the top dog, that he is the greatest warrior in this universe. He's raised to believe that those with low power levels are pathetic and not worth considering... and Goku completely shattered those ideas and because of it, he's in a mad dash to try and find out why he's so strong, why "Kakarrot", the low-class trash is just better than him with him never stopping to consider that it's because whereas that man trains every day and fights only to defeat himself, he has been given shortcuts, he was born into power and only thinks about what he thinks he's owed and not what's actually important and just when one thinks he has put all that bullshit behind him with Goku's sacrifice, he comes back and it reopens that old wound. This is not intended to be a high point for Vegeta, not a moment of understandable rage brought out by his internalized agony over the miserable life he led... it's meant to be the sad low of what is basically his midlife crisis. His realization that in the years he has spent since Goku's death that he actually liked living the quiet life and how he so desperately wants to prove he isn't. To me it's what makes a line like "To a Saiyan, PRIDE IS ALL!" hit harder than "What do you know of meaningless?!". Because it more clearly conveys how Vegeta is in a way trying to force himself to regress back into his old ways of thinking. The dub's still solid to be fair, this was the point where vocal delivery was much better among the dub cast and I'll grant that there are issues that might be keeping the Kai dub from reaching its full potential but personally? I think for the accuracy and the delivery the Kai dub is great here. It gets to the core of what this scene is supposed to be instead of trying to make Vegeta come off as this sympathetic character.
One weird thing for me with the old Z dub was it never could decide if Vegeta cared about the destruction of his planet lol. In the sub he literally says more than once that he doesn't, so it's kinda odd that he's crying about the race "dwindling" here.
I feel like Kai was a vast improvement on the original until the Buu saga. I don't know how, but Kai just dropped the ball so badly after all those years of anticipation. The soundtrack got worse, the pacing of certain scenes was so rushed that the voice acting almost overlapped different takes, even the dialogue which really improved characters like Frieza took a drop in quality. Just feels like they took a small step backward.
@@zenitsuthunder3946 This mostly. Say what you want about the early Funi days, but the Buu saga was where they really improved and got a handle of both the characters they voiced and their dialogue to the point they did it close close to perfect and even expanded on the characters in ways the original manga and Japanese version did not. When they had to do it again they really could not improve on what they already did better with.
When it comes down to it, Script and Voice acting go to Z. Coming from a voice actor (and this isn’t a stab a Chris Sabat, he’s played vegeta for multiple years, vegeta has a gritty voice so it’s normal over that course of time his voice would change and certain things will be harder to do) But you can really feel Vegeta’s emotion through his Z speech and really pin point the things that are bothering him, angering him and Infuriating him just by how he emphasized some of his words. “I” have in me the blood of a Saiyan Prince “HE” is nothing but a “JOKE” “MY” destiny “THROWN TO THE WAY SIDE”, when stating that goku even saved him like a helpless child he pauses and flinches in his voice indicating how hard it is for him to even say what he’s saying out of possible embarrassment and then the final “He has stolen my honor” and “his debt...MUST BE PAID” it’s almost like with his first line he said it with his breath like he got everything off his chest in one sentence, all the pain and anguish he’s been feeling and once he’s turns to Goku he infuriatingly states he will pay for what he’s done, mix all that with Chris Sabats young and fresh dark and grottle fried voice, the amazing original script and Bruce Faulconers always enjoyable music score this scene is almost enough to make you stop breathing for a second, like you feel everything. Plus Vegeta literally sounds like a possessed maniac which is exactly what he’s supposed to sound like. On the ship Vegeta sounded calm, cool, collected and very confident in himself but after his possession which was to give him the strength and drive he yearned for to kill goku, he got exactly that and it almost sounds like he can’t even control himself anymore. Kai just doesn’t hit that mark, the music definitely helps set the tone but it just falls short, sounds more like a child complaining about wanting a rematch on fortnite, it doesn’t feel like a speech given by a man who’s lost it all, clawed his way to where he is and standing before the only other man that’s keeping him from reaching the top. Z will ALWAYS be legendary for doing it all right the first time
For this scene maybe. But overall, Kai has miles better voice acting and dialogue. Z had a lot of weird acting and dialogue choices that made scenes feel like they weren't serious
Very subjective but I have to disagree. As a matter of fact I deal it’s the complete opposite. I’m not saying each doesn’t have their personal flaws but overall, in my opinion, the script and acting for some characters was done way better in Z than Kai. I even think the “polish” they put in the show kinda killed its overall vibe. Again, me personally.
💯 agree to your points on this scene breakdown. I do really enjoy Chris Ayers, RIP, take on Frieza though. But I don’t dislike Linda Young’s version either. They’re very different personalities with their respective voices. For me, personally, and this is def due to nostalgia, not hearing the gritty 90s-early 2000s Faulconer tracks on Kai also is a big letdown. I know that they kept it much more akin to the manga, even adding the Japanese music, but I’m just not a huge fan of it. I did enjoy the music for SSJ2 Gohan in Japanese but I prefer Faulconer’s score for all of Z
That's actually not true. What Vegeta says in the Kai dub is much closer to what he says in the original Japanese and the manga. So that means the Kai dub understands his character better.
@@PatLund I really drew manga and Kai is NOT closer. That’s a myth funimation made to sel dvds. Just like the orange bricks Kai is a false advertisement
Kai makes this sound more petty than it is. Revenge for someone beating you or succeeding where you don't is already petty, but Z at least makes it seem like Vegeta has relatable reasons. Kai makes Vegeta sound like, "waahh, I'm a saiyan too, why can't I be as strong as Kakarot?! Its not fair!" Like, this is a grown mad who's killed thousands and is a survivor of a mass extinction we're talking about here, and he sounds like my cousin when he was 6 and he would complain to my mom when I wouldn't let him play my Xbox when he was over.
That's actually the point. And it's more than thousands, man was a genocider by trade. But this is rock bottom for him, a complete ego tantrum. He saw Goku exceed him in power, and he also felt Goku's time slipping away as they pursued Babidi, and he just had a petty af snap. He's not supposed to be relatable here lol
“That is an indignity I CANNOT BEAR” saves the scene at the end for Kai but I think I feel that way because I have context with the original. I’ve been watching both and there truly are many scenes/episodes where each show does better than the other. Watching both is truly the way to go if u have the time.
I also agree because "his debt must be paid" sounds silly considering this line usually means the debt paid is taking his opponents life, and Goku is already dead.

0:14 - 0:17 this exact dialogue and the line delivery shows Vegeta has literally lost his shit. Completely demolishes anything Kai has to offer in the entire scene.

He likely switched the OSTs around in order to give people a better perspective on the voice acting, in case they were biased in favor of the Faulconer score.
DBZ's dub, Vegeta has a lot to prove. From a young age he'd been told that he would be the one to rule Planet Vegeta, that he'd be the strongest and most powerful among their people. The planet and most of their people were destroyed. He was then placed under Freeza's rule. His role as a prince no longer mattered. Now he was a simple underling. The only thing he could cling onto was his strength and then he was bested in that by someone who he views as infinitely lower than him. Now he has nothing to cling onto. His destiny as a prince and the strongest Saiyan was thrown to the wayside. Now he must prove that he is the strongest by beating the one who took the only thing he had left to cling onto. DBZ Kai's speech on the other hand refers to Vegeta's pride being shattered. He believed himself to be the strongest among the Saiyans only to be greatly outshined by someone infinitely lower than him. "Even a low class can beat an elite, if he trains hard enough": Vegeta is constantly trying to prove that statement to be false by trying to outshine Kakarot, to prove that he is ELITE and that a LOW CLASS WARRIOR can never beat him but the simple fact is, Goku is just better than him. But Vegeta can never accept this fact thus his tantrum here. I don't believe Toriyama's original intention for this scene was for it to be a deep look at Vegeta's past and what it's built up to till this point, like DBZ's dub, but simply Vegeta holding a childish grudge.
Both speeches show vegetas selfishness to go to such extreme lengths to attain more power but the z version makes it more justified and you sympathize with him more because if you stop and think about it he has been through so much
The DBZ one is WAY better, you can understand what vegeta is feelling and he explains it in a way I can't explain. In the Kai version he's just acting like a baby or kid when looses
This is the one scene I think is better in the original. The wording sounds smoother, more personal for Vegeta. Because he is referencing things that happened prior in the series, sounded contemplative, where as Kai he just sounds like hes only mad because Goku just got stronger first.
Heres what kais shouldve been (small tweaks go a long way) Gohan : Vegeta Stop! This isnt you- Vegeta : [knocks away Gohan] SILENCE! This does not concern you! This is between me and Kakarot! How sad. I didn't think you were weak enough to be controlled. Gohan : Dad, don't! Goku : vegeta, answer me! Do you let yourself be a slave? [Vegeta blasts the arena again] Vegeta : Tell me... Is it slavery when you get what you want? (Goku goes ssj) Supreme Kai : No, Goku! You cant fight Vegeta……if you fight him. The injuries he gives you will mean provide more power to babadis ship and Majin Buu will be revived! Goku : Tell me, Vegeta. Was that stamp on your head worth it, I know Babidi's been the one giving you orders. Is this one of them? or is this all go back the same old story between you and me? Gohan : Does it really matter right now Dad? Vegeta : Not to you, Gohan. But to a warrior, it matters greatly. And you know this as well as I do, Kakarot. In a day, you'll be back to the dead, and I will not miss this opportunity! Supreme Kai : That was your plan!? To kill countless people in hopes to fight goku and satisfy your meaningless pride? Vegeta : (growls)………MEANINGLESS, HUH? WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF MEANINGLESS? Spend most of your life ruled by another! Watch your race dwindle to a handful! AND THEN, tell me what has more meaning than your own strength! I have in me the blood of a Saiyan prince. He is nothing but a peasant! Yet I've had to watch him surpass me in strength, my destiny thrown to the wayside! He's... he's even saved my life like I were helpless. He has stolen my honor, and his debts... must be paid!
I can't believe that _I'm_ saying this, but I actually like the original dub better here. Which almost _never_ happens, in my case at least. Neither one is perfect, but Sabat showed a lot of raw emotion that is nowhere to be found in Kai's version. Weird, since for the most part people seemed to refine their portrayals over the years.
The original dub gets so much hate when a lot of the changes they made at least in later seasons weren’t that bad. Damn near all of vegetas speeches were better in the original in my opinion.
Z: A tortured anti-hero desperately searching for power any way he can Kai: A petulant child The original dub has a bit more of a grand opera vibe to it which I prefer
People say that the DBZ speech was better and Kai's was "Vegeta is just bitching", but that's just it. Vegeta was _just_ bitching. That was the biggest flaw of his during that time. His thirst to defeat Goku was so big, he allowed himself to be "controlled" just to become stronger and fight him. While the Z dub can make fans see where he's coming from, the "right way" is not to make fans feel bad for Vegeta, but actively hate him like Kai did.
I never thought about the fact that since Goku was still dead, powering up to ssj3 to fight vegeta would’ve probably wasted the rest of his time he had left
The Kai speech focuses on pettier, individualized grievance, focusing more on Vegeta's personal pride. The Z speech reflects more on how LIFE seems to beat him up, not just Goku, affecting his pride as a Saiyan turned "endangered species". He loses his birthright, his home, and any freedom from dictatorial edict, but scrapes out an existence anyway... And then some total reject leftover of his race not only survives too, but continues to outpace him, making his life of struggle and his Saiyan super-elite status (one of the only things he has left) seemingly be treated like a joke! The slights dealt upon him by Goku and his life in general would equally make a prideful man like Vegeta want to lash out. If Vegeta sounds like he's just being a petty bitch, I think that's the point.
People like to poopoo on the OG series because of how long they spent building things up, sometimes over several episodes. What they don't realize is it's deliberate, and without the build up it makes things just worse. Best example is Vegeta's Final Flash. It's called Final Flash because it's final. It's all his energy focused into a single beam. It's super impractical because of how long it takes, and it's Vegeta abusing his cocky genes that are in Cell. Kai and Super turned it into just any old move, and it misses the point.
A very, VERY rare instance of the original dub having better timing and emotion than Kai imo. "WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF MEANINGLESS" and the speech that follows was accidentally hard af
The original speech was far superior. The words used and especially how they were said exuded passion. You get a good look at vegeta's psyche when listening. The kai version just seems off, it doesn't feel as believable. It's like they were trying to top z by being more dramatic but it didn't work. It came off as hokey.
DBZ showed the more tragic side of Vegeta. While the Kai version focused more on Vegeta’s pride of himself. Kai in my opinion is more accurate to his character, but DBZ just feels so raw.
idk sorry, from what everyone is screaming in the comments, the site i nabbed these clips from didnt use correct scores for either, but idk, i wasnt paying attention to that kind of thing when i threw this together years ago
It's an unreleased track from the Faulconer score, that first played when Vegeta wakes up from his nap on Namek and finds Gohan and Krillin using the dragonballs. Coycoy88 did a rip of the song and named it "Vegeta's Anger". Here's a link for ya. ruclips.net/video/v6apdmz38W0/видео.html&ab_channel=coycoy88
The voice acting in Kai is better, but the script is way more interesting in Z. You feel why Goku’s superior strength haunts Vegeta in Z, whereas Kai’s dialogue kinda sounds like a generic bad guy, which is far from how I would categorize Vegeta
The voice acting in Kai sounds like the actors have done this a million times already and can't wait to leave the studio and go home. Sounds like they are bored as hell. Especially piccolo lol
This is absolute peak writing, why newer versions of the show(second half of this episode) change iconic lines is beyond me. This is my favorite moment in the entire series
“WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE!? DON’T YOU SEE THE UNIVERSE MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR MEANINGLESS SQUABBLE!?” “THAT was your reasoning!? You killed countless innocents to try and repair your foolish pride!?” Can’t decide which one I like better. Never been a fan of Supreme Kai’s, but it’s kinda hard to not feel for him here. He just trying to do his job and keep the universe safe, which is the most logical thing to do in their situation. Yet, he has to work with powerful, but incredibly shortsighted fools who can’t man up and set their pride aside and pull together.
I myself would go with the original Version, but the Kai Version is not weak either. To fully understand it, stick with me for a moment + let's just twist a little bit and say that Vegeta did all that to safe his son Trunks. (It is a very human thing to do - doing bad things to protects something like your baby child. We humans can understand this because we value familiy bonds more then anything less.) Now imagine the Kaioshin says something like "What? You did all that for your foolish son?" - if you watch the scene again with that in mind you could completely understand Vegetas reaction right? How pissed would you be in this moment in Vegetas shoes? That is how Vegeta reacts when Kaioshin tells him"What? You did all that to repair your foolish pride?" -> He is extremely pissed, because he values Pride more than anything else. THAT is what Sayajin Pride is and the Kai Version explains it perfectly with that scene.
Man, they really butchered his speech in Kai, huh? In Kai he sounds like a whiny child. In DBZ you actually understand where he’s coming from and why he’s so resentful.
As a fan of dragonball Z wins the dialog for vegeta sounds good but Kai its meh but hey Kai looks good tho I mean ay you like what you like if you like Kai kool and if you like Z kool.
I’m currently rewatching kai cuz it’s shorter and I don’t feel like waiting 5 episodes for Goku to throw a spirit bomb buuuut I came to this video cuz when I got to this scene I didn’t remember him saying any of this… the dragon ball Z version of this scene is infinitely better. I was let down when he never says “WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF MEANINGLESS????”
Theyre matching the sub more closely, in the original dub their translations were off and it was more about filling mouth flaps, but because of this they were a lot more passionate and made up for their lack of skill with raw emotion.
@@youravictim38 Z Kai I'd agree with you for sure but watching clips of what they called the Lost Chapters or Buu Saga Kai there was a lot less passion there. Like, it's so bad compared to the OG dub, likely because by now they just don't care as much.
I mean... I literally just read this in the manga a few days ago, and Kai is far closer than Z in regards to dialogue. I get why people like the Z one better and thought that Kai Vegeta was whiny but... yeah, he was whiny in the Canon source. He had to work through some crap, and that was part of it. It wasn't about being oppressed or any of the reasoning Z created, but simply wanting to surpass Goku. He could not stand that Goku was better than him, hence why he accepted Bobbity's control. It's what made his dialogue at the end of the arc so impactful, when he acknowledged and accepted that Goku was better and the champ.
I still remember when Vegeta cared only about proving that he was the strongest fighter in the universe. Even as a kid, his status as the heir to the throne of Planet Vegeta, along with the praise he received when ever he succeeded at completing a mission, served to bolster his ego, to the point where he believed that he alone was entitled to be ruler of the Universe. It wasn't until the final battle with Kid Buu that the cocky prince finally accepted that there will always be someone better.
I can say z Is way better then kai. The way vegeta gives his speech is better makes it more interesting and invested instead. But the voice actors of kai is better z hands down

Not only is Vegeta’s speech amazing, but Supreme Kai’s legitimate confusion when he says “WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE?!” He is genuinely shocked that they would put this fight over the universe and it is so awesome.
The Z speach makes feel like I can get where Vegeta's coming from and KAI feels like he's just whining
The Broly movie you speak of isn’t canon.

100% absolutely. For a moment there he really sounds like a completely real dude who's had enough and is about to snap

"Spend most of your life ruled by another, watch your race dwindle to a handful, then tell me what has more meaning than your own strength."
vs
"All I want is my fight with Kakarot! Here and now! I shall emerge the victor!"
It's not that Kai's portrayal is out of character or incorrect, but it is worse because it is lacking the depth the OG Funi dub had. In Z we see into his soul, in Kai he acts like a one-dimensional character. This problem applies to a lot of Kai and the entirety of DBS in my opinion.
*This is why I'm don't like modern dubs' slavish devotion to a 100 percent exact literally translated Japanese script. If Z was dubbed back then like Kai was today, we would've never have gotten the masterfully crafted improvised Woolsey-ism dialogue of*

Completely agree. This is exactly why. Some changes actually improve the overall scene.

Here’s my take in the dubbing; anyone is more than welcome to discuss this with me too:
Z: In Z, i feel like Funi got more in depth with Vegeta’s emotions rather than his pride, which is what honestly made this scene and character so iconic for the amount of years Z has been out for.
In the manga, man was ruthless until he had a kid, then he was forced to chill until he snapped here.
imagine the kai animation with Z’s dialog. that would be perfection.
Facts
they have the same animation the difference is kai has different colors and saturation and less filler
Depends on the dialogue. Vast majority of z dialogue sucks
The fuck?? It's the same animation.
Chris Ayres is a way better Frieza but other than that Z beats Kai on the music alone
It's so weird seeing the Kikuchi score on Z and then the Falconer score on Kai lol
DBZ Kai Faulconer edition slaps. It's on internet archive
Just feels like they took a small step backward.
yeah it was good up until the buu saga then it went to shit in both japanese and english. Unfortunate
Atleast kai got a sick soundtrack that it only it got in the kid buu vs ss2 goku part
or maybe the FUNI dub in buu saga was just really good.
Lol
@@aaronhigh1923 Chris: “I’m not gonna pretend that wasn’t a really crappy dub” (referring to Z)
I did enjoy the music for SSJ2 Gohan in Japanese but I prefer Faulconer’s score for all of Z

dragon ball Z understoond Vegeta's character more than Kai did
Yep, and Ironically in terms of dialogue Kai was more faithful towards the original manga
@@cyberianknight19yearsago25 sorry for not seeing this comment for 2 weeks
That's actually not true. What Vegeta says in the Kai dub is much closer to what he says in the original Japanese and the manga. So that means the Kai dub understands his character better.
I mean Sabat directed the voice acting for both and he’s the voice of Vegeta...
Its not fair!"
Like, this is a grown mad who's killed thousands and is a survivor of a mass extinction we're talking about here, and he sounds like my cousin when he was 6 and he would complain to my mom when I wouldn't let him play my Xbox when he was over.
Watching both is truly the way to go if u have the time.
that line fits so much better, the debts must be paid sounds way too cheesy, even if i like the original dub in this scene more than kai, overall.
I also agree because "his debt must be paid" sounds silly considering this line usually means the debt paid is taking his opponents life, and Goku is already dead.
I also agree because "his debt must be paid" sounds silly considering this line usually means the debt paid is taking his opponents life, and Goku is already dead.
Wow, they really did Vegeta DIRTY in Kai. Almost every speech of his I see is almost always more heartfelt and emotional in dbz.
0:14 - 0:17 this exact dialogue and the line delivery shows Vegeta has literally lost his shit. Completely demolishes anything Kai has to offer in the entire scene.
I like how Goku keeps coming back to life in random scenes, then dying again. Like.....oh a halo! Oh! Where'd it go? Oh! It's back! Oh, there it goes again...

How come Faulconers music plays in Kai but not in the original Z version? Shouldn't it be the other way around? Anyway, Z definitely was more captivating. The Kai version either feels phoned in or trying too hard at times.
The Kai clip in this vid is a fan edit with Faulconer's music. The actual episode has the Sumitomo score they used for the Buu Saga.

True
Despite Kai having more touched/fixed animation, neither Z nor Kai noticed that Goku's halo is missing at 1:15

I prefer Kai over Z overall but I love the Buu saga in the original DBZ dub more more than Final Chapters. Especially with scenes like this one.
The dbz scene didn’t even have the music with it and yet it still beat Kai by a landslide
Supreme Kai's 'Who ARE you people?!' in Z is perfect, haha. It's so.. flabbergasted
This is the one scene I think is better in the original. The wording sounds smoother, more personal for Vegeta. Because he is referencing things that happened prior in the series, sounded contemplative, where as Kai he just sounds like hes only mad because Goku just got stronger first.
Heres what kais shouldve been (small tweaks go a long way)
Gohan : Vegeta Stop! This isnt you-
Vegeta : [knocks away Gohan] SILENCE! This does not concern you! This is between me and Kakarot!
Goku : i wont fight you vegeta not now!.
Vegeta : [blasts the arena] You'll fight with me, Kakarot! Unless of course, you'd like more blood on your hands.
Goku : Vegeta! Certainly you wouldnt!... How sad. I didn't think you were weak enough to be controlled.
Gohan : Dad, don't!
Goku : vegeta, answer me! Do you let yourself be a slave?
[Vegeta blasts the arena again]
Vegeta : Tell me... Is it slavery when you get what you want?
(Goku goes ssj)
Supreme Kai : No, Goku!
Kai Buu saga was dogshit all around tbh. The dialogue seemed much worse than Z and Kai for the cell saga
I mean it did. Kai improved the voicing in Frieza saga
I feel like all of Kai's voice actors have gotten worse.. yeah some of the dialogue is better, but the voice acting and feeling is better in Z

"I don't like the Kai version. It makes Vegeta sound whiny."
Uh, YES? Cause Vegeta _was_ being a whiny little man-child.
That was the point.
Even as someone who prefers Kai, Z really nailed this scene. Sure, Kai’s more accurate to the original dialogue, but it’s much more emotional in Z
Z makes you see where Vegeta is coming from, but Kai just makes Vegeta sound like an entitled brat.
The original dub gets so much hate when a lot of the changes they made at least in later seasons weren’t that bad. Damn near all of vegetas speeches were better in the original in my opinion.
"Vegeta just comes off as a jealous baby in kai"
Toriyama : Shush.
I like both. And japanese version. I can rewatch them all.
Z: A tortured anti-hero desperately searching for power any way he can
Kai: A petulant child
The original dub has a bit more of a grand opera vibe to it which I prefer
People say that the DBZ speech was better and Kai's was "Vegeta is just bitching", but that's just it. Vegeta was _just_ bitching. That was the biggest flaw of his during that time. His thirst to defeat Goku was so big, he allowed himself to be "controlled" just to become stronger and fight him. While the Z dub can make fans see where he's coming from, the "right way" is not to make fans feel bad for Vegeta, but actively hate him like Kai did.
'Pride is all' - Vegeta backing Pride month.
Vegeta forgetting he killed 1/3rd of the remaining saiyans on Earth
People like to poopoo on the OG series because of how long they spent building things up, sometimes over several episodes. What they don't realize is it's deliberate, and without the build up it makes things just worse. Best example is Vegeta's Final Flash. It's called Final Flash because it's final. It's all his energy focused into a single beam. It's super impractical because of how long it takes, and it's Vegeta abusing his cocky genes that are in Cell. Kai and Super turned it into just any old move, and it misses the point.
if kai merged what they had in the og dub with the manga it wouldve been perfect
A very, VERY rare instance of the original dub having better timing and emotion than Kai imo. "WHAT DO YOU KNOW OF MEANINGLESS" and the speech that follows was accidentally hard af
Kai: Better dub work
Z: Better dialog
The original speech was far superior. The words used and especially how they were said exuded passion. You get a good look at vegeta's psyche when listening. The kai version just seems off, it doesn't feel as believable. It's like they were trying to top z by being more dramatic but it didn't work. It came off as hokey.

I grew up watching Z on tv pand this scene still feels so real. Feels like everything built up for this very moment

Gotta give this one to z
“WHO ARE YOU PEOPLE!? DON’T YOU SEE THE UNIVERSE MATTERS MORE THAN YOUR MEANINGLESS SQUABBLE!?”
“THAT was your reasoning!? You killed countless innocents to try and repair your foolish pride!?”
Can’t decide which one I like better.
If you believe Kai did it better check yourself into a mental institution
I myself would go with the original Version, but the Kai Version is not weak either. To fully understand it, stick with me for a moment + let's just twist a little bit and say that Vegeta did all that to safe his son Trunks. (It is a very human thing to do - doing bad things to protects something like your baby child. We humans can understand this because we value familiy bonds more then anything less.)
Now imagine the Kaioshin says something like "What? You did all that for your foolish son?" - if you watch the scene again with that in mind you could completely understand Vegetas reaction right?
How pissed would you be in this moment in Vegetas shoes? That is how Vegeta reacts when Kaioshin tells him"What? You did all that to repair your foolish pride?" -> He is extremely pissed, because he values Pride more than anything else. THAT is what Sayajin Pride is and the Kai Version explains it perfectly with that scene.
Kai is overall the better version of the story but there are some scenes including this one where Z is by far superior
Z is better in general
Kai sucks don't speak for all of us

Theyre matching the sub more closely, in the original dub their translations were off and it was more about filling mouth flaps, but because of this they were a lot more passionate and made up for their lack of skill with raw emotion.
The only person who had great dialogue in Z was Vegeta💀Goku and everyone else sucked in Z. Kai was far better in voice acting

These scenes are so hard to watch without the Faulconer score.
@Kid Synthesize I hope you're joking.
But the voice actors of kai is better z hands down
The voices of kid Gohan and 18 in Kai were awful and really hurt the show.
